Former White House Stenographer to Third Annual 23rd Street Armory Oktoberfest Speak at Bala Cynwyd Library n 2012, Beck Dorey-Stein was in D.C., scraping by. She responded to a posting in Craigslist and, by a remarkable series of events, landed up working in the White House as one of Barack Obama’s stenographers. In short time, she became a member of the elite team that surrounds the president, learned protocols, and developed friendships with colleagues who had left their “real” lives in service of the President. She had a spontaneous affair with a con-

She ran next to Obama on a treadmill in a hotel gym, and accompanied him to 45 countries, recorder and mic in hand, including a spontaneous excursion to the Shwedagon Pagoda in Burma. Fortunately for those who wonder how the presidency looks close-up, Dorey-Stein has written a book published this year, From the Corner of the Oval Office. The book has received enthusiastic reviews from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other publications. Paul Begala particularly praised her “spunk and her sparkling, crackling prose [which] had me cheering for her through each adventure.” And fortunately for us locals, she will soon speak at the Bala Cynwyd Library. Dorey-Stein grew up in Narberth and graduated from Lower Merion High School, class of 2004. 50th Anniversary of Frederick Wiseman’s Seminal Documentary High School Special Screening Presented by the Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival in Partnership with Penn Cinema and Media Studies he Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Frederick Wiseman’s seminal documentary High School with a special 35mm screening on Sunday, October 14, 7 p.m. at the Lightbox Film Center (located in International House). Special Guest: Tim Corrigan, Professor of English and Cinema Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Shot over five weeks in March and April of 1968, this fascinating peek inside Philadelphia’s Northeast High School examines what really goes on inside the walls of an American high school. Hailed as one of the most important and original filmmakers working today, Frederick Wiseman’s decades-long exploration of “the American institution” has influenced documentary filmmakers from the United States to Israel. One of the first cinéma vérité documentaries, and still as

T

influential today as it was half a century ago, High School follows students as they go about their day: chatting with classmates, navigating their lessons, and getting into quarrels with their guidance counselor. Wiseman delves into the everyday struggle some teachers face to discipline their more unruly charges, as well as the prevalent student apathy observed in classrooms where students are seen staring into space, languorous and uninspired. In observing these everyday interactions, it is easy to see how schools succeed in transmitting social values from one generation to another. Cited by the Library of Congress as a National Treasure, High School enthralls as a document of the times, a nostalgic reminder of what our own high school experience was like, and perhaps most importantly, a witness to the ways schools affect the predominant value systems within society. PA Film Premiere of “The Little Things” Hosted by the PA Lyme Resource Network October 13 at Ursinus College an a tiny tick bite kill? The alarming answer is YES! Pennsylvania already leads the nation with the highest number of Lyme disease cases. According to the CDC, there were more than 12,200 cases reported in 2016, but the CDC believes the “real” number of unreported cases is 10 times higher—more than 120,000 cases in Pennsylvania alone. This invisible disease can cause intense joint pain, fatigue, and brain fog—it can also be deadly. “Lyme carditis causes fatal abnormalities in heart rhythm. Lyme disease is a tremendous public health problem and there is an urgent need for prevention and timely diagnosis,” said Dr. Marina Makous. Dr. Makous is an assistant clinical professor at Columbia University Medical Center where she also completed a fellowship at Columbia’s Lyme and Tickborne Disease Research Center. Lyme and other tick-borne diseases claimed the lives of at least 3 people in the Delaware Valley in 2017. To honor their lives and raise awareness, Pennsylvania Lyme Resource Network (PALRN) and Drexel University College of Medicine are hosting a one night only event, October 13, 2018. The PA premiere of “The Little Things,” a theatrical docudrama that tells the true story of Joseph Elone who died from Lyme disease. Joe came home from summer camp in 2013 and began showing symptoms of Lyme but a test came back negative. Joe later collapsed and died. Writer/actor/filmmaker Jeremy Davidson and his wife, Mary Stuart Masterson, heard about Lyme and partnered with the Elone family to tell their son’s story. “The Little Things” puts a face on this invisible and sometimes deadly disease. “We want communities to understand the seriousness of Lyme/tick-borne diseases by commemorating 3 lives tragically lost in 2017, preventable with the right knowledge. Our goal with this event is to motivate communities to take action and protect themselves. This event will provide prevention information and access to top experts,” said Julia Wagner of PALRN. View “The Little Things” on October 13, 2018 at Lenfest Theater in the Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center, Ursinus College, 601 E. Main St., Collegeville, PA. Doors open 5 p.m.; Show at 6:30 p.m.; VIP Reception Post-Show. Nine seniors from The Baldwin School have been recognized by the National Merit® Scholarship Program. From left, top row – Simi Bleznak, Jane Bai, Angelina Shi, Katie Cappola, Lexi Phelan; bottom row – Alissa Liu, Helen Ji, Sarah Bunn, Anjali Sukhavasi. Jane Bai, Katie Cappola, Helen Ji, Angelina Shi and Anjali Sukhavasi have been recognized as Semifinalists for their outstanding performance on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Of the nearly 1.6 million high school juniors who entered the program, these five Baldwin students were among 16,000 seniors who qualified for recognition as Semifinalists. Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. Finalists will be selected based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. In addition to Baldwin’s Semifinalists, Simi Bleznak, Sarah Bunn, Alissa Liu and Lexi Phelan have been named National Merit Commended Students by the 2019 National Merit Scholarship program. “We are extremely proud of our seniors recognized by National Merit,” said Valerie Marchand Welsh, Director of College Counseling. “Baldwin students are extraordinary in their academic and extra-curricular accomplishments. We know that our students will go on to be life-long learners and will have an impact in their own way. We wish them the best of luck.”

Golden Slipper Gems offers a brand new Canasta class for beginners taught by Judy Leib, who will teach the fundamentals and strategy of the modern American version of this very versatile and fun card game. Golden Slipper Gems on the Main Line’s eightweek Lifelong Learning series begins October 15. The new fall educational series will feature six brand new courses on a variety of fascinating topics that include movie criticism, Broadway’s greatest lyricist (Stephen Sondheim), and discussions on current global affairs and American history. Dr. Claire Hirschfield (Professor Emerita, European History at Penn State), one of series presenters, will present A Changing World Order: The Rise of China. From the Terracotta army of the first empire to the collapse of the Manchus in the twelfth century, the course will cover the enduring role of Confucius, the triumphs and tragedies of an imperial system and the struggle of the twentieth century. The course will conclude with the victory of Mao and a communist system which continues to evolve, as its leaders challenge the United States for world hegemony. Historical Myths: The Search for the Real American Past, another new program, will be led by Michael Simeone, who will present some of the most prevalent myths in our history with topics including the American Revolution, Fallen Heroes (Ford, Lindbergh and Hoover) and The Cold War. And, These are Not your Parent’s Bible Stories will explore seven Biblical stories, discovering clues hidden in the texts to find their meaning. Complementing these exciting new classes, Golden Slipper’s Fall program also offers Tai Chi; Stephen Sondheim – Theater’s Greatest Lyricist; Recent Developments in Medicine, Science & Technology; Movie Talk & Theater, too! Something for everyone! All classes are held at Adath Israel, located at 250 N. Highland Avenue, Merion Station. Additional information and a class guide are available by contacting Moriah SimonHazani at 610-359-8632, ext. 11, msimonhazani@goldenslipper.org or visit www.goldenslippergems.org.
