King courtesy of HBO Tom Perrotta is the bestselling author of nine works of fiction, including Election and Little Children, both of which were made into Oscarnominated films, and The Leftovers, which was adapted into a critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning HBO series. His other books include Bad Haircut, The Wishbones, Joe College, The Abstinence Teacher, Nine Inches, and his newest, Mrs. Fletcher. His work has been translated into a multitude of languages. Perrotta grew up in New Jersey and lives outside of Boston. Perrotta will read from his work at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6, in the Ely Room, Wyndham Alumnae House, at 235 North Merion Avenue in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. All readings are free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required. Conservation Woodlands Hike
In Observance of All Souls All are invited on Sunday, November 3 at 5 p.m. to a Service of Remembrance to observe the Feast of All Souls. Director of Music, Michael Diorio, will conduct the combined adult choirs of The Redeemer along with the Schola Cantorum (youth choir) with Eric Plutz, Organist. The service will take place in the Church of the Redeemer, 230 Pennswood Road, Bryn Mawr, PA. Choral works will include the Duruflé Requiem and Thomas LaVoy’s If I Must Go, a piece commissioned by The Redeemer Choirs. All Souls’ Day, the day following All Saints’ Day, originated as a day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have died. Free Sunday Shredding Event State Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., will co-host a free Sunday shredding event open to constituents of the 194th Legislative District. The rain-or-shine shred event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. until noon – or until the truck is full – on Sunday, November 10, at Har Zion Temple, 1500 Hagys Ford Road, Penn Valley, 19072. In the spring of 2019, DeLissio’s constituents shredded 22,200 pounds of paper, which has an environmental impact of saving 189 trees, 282,000 kilowatt hours of energy, 33.30 cubic yards of landfill space and 77,700 gallons of water. All shredding will occur on site. The paper will then be baled and sent to a recycling company, where it is made into new paper products. There is a maximum of four boxes or grocery bags per household. Newspapers, magazines and journals are not accepted. Val Rossman is having a solo show of her new paintings, which opens at Gross McCleaf Gallery on Friday, November 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. The show, titled ”Color Works,” features acrylic abstract paintings which are spatially complex and visually exciting. The unifying element in Rossman’s work is her sensitive use of color. ARTS & CULTURAL EVENTS Philadelphia Youth Orchestra to Accompany Lisa Fischer and Grand Baton in a Special Performance The evening will include music by Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, the Rolling Stones and Sting – November 1 he Philadelphia Youth Orchestra will accompany veteran singer Lisa Fischer and her band, Grand Baton, in a spectacular performance in Verizon Hall at The Kimmel Center of Performing Arts on November 1, at 8 p.m. PYO’s 130 members, between the ages of 14 and 21, will support Fischer’s dynamic range of rock, soul, classical, and other influences.

ADOPTIONS FROM THE HEART 3RD ANNUAL SHARE YOUR HEART BENEFIT CONCERT doptions From The Heart (AFTH) is hosting its 3rd Annual Share Your Heart Benefit Concert on November 7, 2019 at Manayunk Brewing Company. The event will kickstart the National Adoption Month celebration. The four-hour fundraising event will be held from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. The event raises money for the AFTH Birth Parent Scholarship Fund. This fund provides financial assistance to birth parents in their pursuit to receiving an education at either a four-year college or trade school. The concert will feature live music performances from, Bethlehem and Sad Patrick, Whiskey Logic, and Miss Elaine. All proceeds made through ticket and raffle sales will go directly to AFTH’s Birth Parent Scholarship Fund. The Birth Parent Scholarship Fund was created by AFTH’s Associate Director, Heidi Gonzalez. “I wanted to give men and women a chance to better their situations that may have led them to place a child for adoption. By helping them financially with school or trade school we are helping them to improve their lives,” said Heidi. The scholarship fund is primarily financed through donations and is not exclusive to only birth parents who have placed a child for adoption through AFTH. The Birth Parent Scholarship Fund was created by AFTH’s Associate Director, Heidi Gonzalez. “I wanted to give men and women a chance to better their situations that may have led them to place a child for adoption. It is her goal to earn her bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance and management. Lucy’s dream is to pursue a career as a commercial or residential loan officer within the company she currently works for. “I am a single mother to my 3-year-old and having this scholarship gives me the ability to be able to work, go to school, and still be home to tuck my son into bed at night without having to worry about getting a second job,” said Lucy. Lucy will be studying at Harrisburg Area Community College in pursuit of her bachelor’s degree. Concert goers can buy raffle tickets for chances at winning exciting prizes! Immaculata Symphony to Hold Fall Concert “American Rhapsody” n Saturday, November 2, the Immaculata Symphony will hold its fall concert, “American Rhapsody” in Alumnae Hall at 7:30 p.m. The Immaculata Symphony is a universitycommunity organization, with a long and outstanding tradition that goes back to the University’s founding in 1920. Under the direction of Joseph Gehring, M.M., music director, three American composers will be featured in the fall concert. The famous Rhapsody in Blue, by George Gershwin, will be performed by Dr. William Carr, Steinway Artist and chair of Immaculata’s music department. The concert begins with music from the American opera Merry Mount by Howard Hanson, which will be conducted by Immaculata Symphony assistant conductor, Mark Cellini. Rounding out the program is Symphony No. 1 in A-flat, “Afro-American,” completed in 1930

by William Grant Still, the first African American to compose a symphony that was performed by a prominent orchestra. Fans of jazz, blues and classical styles will enjoy this concert. Gehring is an associate faculty member and director of ensembles for Immaculata’s music department. He has directed the Immaculata Symphony since 2004, and is an active conductor, pianist, and educator. He is the conductor of the West Chester Band and Chesco Pops Orchestra, and is a frequent guest conductor of various honor/festival bands and orchestras throughout Pennsylvania and Delaware. Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra Wins Prestigious Award Next concert Sunday, November 3 at Upper Darby Performing Arts Center he Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra has won a prestigious national award for its groundbreaking CD, “American Romantics III,” researched by Music Director, Dr. Reuben Blundell, in the Fleisher Collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia’s holding of over 23,000 orchestral works. The CD was published by New Focus Records in April 2018. The American Prize Ernst Bacon Memorial Award for performance of American Music, 2018-2019, in the community instrumental division was awarded to the Lansdowne Symphony. The American Prize recognizes and rewards the best that America produces, without bias against small city versus large, or unknown artist versus well-known. The panel of judges is made up of distinguished musicians representing virtually every region of the country. The judges include professional vocalists, conductors, composers, pianist, tenured professors, and orchestra, band, and choral musicians. The Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1946. It is considered one of the finest community orchestras in the Philadelphia area. Details about the Lansdowne Symphony’s five annual subscription concerts (beginning Sunday, November 3 at 3 p.m. at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center) can be found at the orchestra’s website, www.lansdowneso.org. Nosrat learned to cook at Chez Panisse in Italy, alongside Benedetta Vitali and Dario Cecchini, and at Eccolo in Berkeley. She studied poetry with Robert Hass, Shakespeare with Stephen Booth, and journalism with Michael Pollan. She has said that Alice Waters and farmer Bob Cannard taught her more about land stewardship than anyone else. Her first book, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking, was illustrated by Wendy MacNaughton. It is a New York Times bestseller and won multiple awards including the 2018 James Beard General Cookbook of the Year, 2018 Fortnum & Mason Debut Cookbook, 2018 International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Cookbook of the Year, 2018 IACP Julia Child First Book Award, and The Sunday Times Food Book of the Year 2017. A documentary series based on the book is now streaming on Netflix. In 2018, she was named the Eater Chef of the Year. She is also one of five food columnists for The New York Times Magazine. In April 2019, she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2019 in the Pioneers category. Also in 2019, Nosrat’s Netflix series, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, received the 2019 James Beard Award for Television Program, on Location. He played collegiate football at Penn State, where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree, and spent three years in the NFL before retiring in 2017. His active research areas at M.I.T. include convex geometry, graph theory, machine learning, and numerical analysis. The Haverford School’s Best for Boys speaker series invites the community to learn about topics and practices that help foster the social, emotional, and academic growth of young boys. olf Performing Arts Center will host its annual Celebration of Character on Sunday, November 10, 2019 with two shows at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Celebration of Character kicks off Wolf PAC’s 15th Season of bringing Theatre Education to the Main Line. Celebration of Character raises money to support the organization’s Scholarship Fund, which ensures all children, regardless of financial ability, are able to participate in its many theatre programs. Wolf PAC awarded more than $10,000 in scholarships during the 2018-2019 season. Wolf PAC was founded in 2005 by retired Lower Merion school teacher, Bobbi Wolf. She sat at her kitchen table surrounded by close friends and said, “Let’s open a place where children can feel safe, where they can grow through theatre.” This dream grew into an organization that provides students quality mainstage performances, theatre classes, private lessons, Summer Theatre Camp, and Visiting Artist Programs which bring the dramatic arts to schools throughout the greater Philadelphia area. Members of the Community Clothes Charity (CCC) hard at work marking donations to their annual fundraising sale of new and gently used women’s fashions, accessories and gift items that are priced at a mere fraction of their original cost. The 2019 fundraising event kicks off with a “Preview Day” on Sunday, November 3 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Eager shoppers are glad to make a $30 donation at the door on that Sunday to get the first chance to buy fashions, accessories and home décor items priced way below their original cost. On Monday and Tuesday shopping hours are from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. A donation of $5 is requested on Monday, but entry is always free on the final “bargain” day which is when the already low CCC prices get reduced to half price or even lower! The CCC’s annual sale features famous labels such as Chanel, Hermès, Ferragamo, Carolina Herrera, St. John, Escada, and other designer names that especially attract bargain loving women interested in couture and designer creations. But many well-known popular labels are also well represented among the large selection of coats, suits, dresses, evening gowns, and sportswear that will all be marked down to just a fraction of their original cost. This year, the CCC has received many new fashions including a generous donation from Lilly Pulitzer LLC. The 2019 sale also offers a treasure trove of fashion accessories, including many very collectible high-end designer handbags, scarves and shoes. Wonderful jewelry, gifts and home décor items abound in the extensive “Boutique” area in the front of the store. The CCC, a 501C3 charitable organization, has had a large impact on Philadelphia and the greater Delaware Valley ever since its original inception in 1957 to aid hospitalized war veterans. Over the years this group has donated over $6 million to many worthy area beneficiaries, especially those serving women and children. The Committee chooses different local charitable groups each year to receive the proceeds of their efforts. The 2019 sale will be its 62th anniversary and will benefit four local charities: The Barn at Spring Brook Farm, CHOP Healthy Weight Program, Pennsylvania SPCA, and Community Partnership School. Alzheimer’s Helpline Expands Weekend Hours to Help Caregivers he Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has expanded the weekend hours of its National Toll-Free Helpline. The helpline, which is available seven days a week, provides individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers with assistance, support and resources. Weekend hours will now be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (ET). The Helpline is also available during weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (ET). AFA’s National Toll-Free Helpline (866-232-8484), which is staffed entirely by licensed social workers trained in dementia care, receives calls from family and professional caregivers alike, as well as individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses. Through the helpline, AFA’s social workers answer questions, offer tips and strategies and provide referrals to local services in the caller’s area, no matter where they live in the United States. AFA’s social workers are also available via live chat, e-mail, and Skype through AFA’s website, www.alzfdn.org. “No one should have to deal with Alzheimer’s alone, because help and support are available,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President and CEO. “As the number of people with Alzheimer’s continues to grow, so too does the number of caregivers who need support. to Chester County in November Community Foundation to Provide Free Educational Series and Receptions throughout Chester County uring the month of November, the Chester County Community Foundation will host three Philanthropy Video Talks & Receptions open to the public. The series is a continuation of the Foundation’s programming to inspire and educate the community on legacy philanthropy and build a strong culture of nonprofits. Each Philanthropy Video Talk & Reception will feature a viewing of Katherine Fulton’s TED Talk “You are the Future of Philanthropy” followed by a discussion led by local community members. here are no cures for Jewish genetic diseases, but prevention through screening can enable couples to have healthy biological children. Thanks to advancements in technology and the advocacy work of organizations like Einstein Victor Center, counseling and screening is affordable and accessible. The mission of Einstein Victor Center, in Philadelphia, is to prevent life-threatening genetic diseases through preconception genetic screening, education, and counseling of individuals and couples with Jewish ancestry. The Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases was founded in 2002 by Lois B. Victor in partnership with Einstein Healthcare Network. Ms. Victor lost two children to a Jewish genetic disease before a test for the disorder was available. The experience motivated her to ensure that no other family would endure the heartache of a preventable illness. The Einstein Victor Center team includes Sheri Minkoff, who partners with community leaders to build awareness through education; genetic counselor, Joshua Stone, MS, LCGC, who interprets genetic test results and provides guidance; and Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Chani Yondorf, MD, provides healthcare that honors the traditions of the Jewish community, while advocating for preconception screening of Jewish genetic diseases. Mission-driven, Einstein Victor Center partners with community leaders from organizations, universities, and synagogues to prevent Jewish genetic diseases by building awareness through education. Staff and volunteers advocate for affordable and accessible counseling and screening of these diseases for young adults. One in two Jews is at risk of being a carrier for preventable Jewish genetic diseases. If both parents are carriers of a mutation in the same disease gene, there is a 25 percent chance with each pregnancy of having a child affected by that disease, and a 50 percent chance of having a child who is a carrier for the same disease, just like their parents. Preconception screening is recommended when individuals are Jewish or have any Jewish ancestry; is a Jewish member of an interfaith or interethnic couple, or are considering the use of donor egg or sperm. Einstein Victor Center recommends screening for 101 preventable Jewish genetic diseases. Since carriers are generally healthy and being a carrier has no impact on an individual’s everyday health, a recessive gene can be passed down many generations without manifesting. A carrier is a person who has a disease, but is not affected by the disease. Both parents need to be carriers of the same disease, in order to pass it on. Many of the diseases are devastating and fatal but, with counseling and screening, these diseases can be prevented. If both members of a couple are carriers for the same disease, they can have a healthy biological child. Through medical science and community support, they can choose egg/sperm donation, in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and prenatal diagnosis. Muth to Host Veterans’ Expo Sen. Katie Muth (D-Berks, Chester, Montgomery), along with the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Southeast Veterans Center and the Disabled American Veterans Norristown Chapter 25, will host a Veterans’ Expo on November 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, 100 Station Ave., Oaks, PA 19456. The expo is open to all veterans and their family members. The event will offer information on resources and services accessible through state agencies, local organizations and businesses that would be of interest to veterans and their families. enior Noor Bowman ’20 was recognized as a winner of the High School Leadership Award, which is presented by Widener University, in partnership with NBC 10. The award acknowledges and honors the region’s best and brightest future leaders who take it upon themselves to make a significant difference in their schools and communities. In its eighth year, the program recognizes students from high schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware who demonstrate courage and leadership—those who stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools. Noor, who was presented with a plaque by Widener University President and Baldwin alumna Julie E. Wollman ’77, PhD, is unafraid to do the work necessary to bring about change. She created and ran a workshop with a classmate about colorism, she helped to create and facilitate Baldwin’s Diversity & Equity Day “Building Bridges” and she spoke in front of hundreds of people at the Women’s March in Philadelphia. “In addition to Noor’s drive to bring justice to those who are marginalized in our society, she is a kind, thoughtful young woman who is a valued mentor to peers,” said Dr. Wollman. “I am so proud to honor Noor’s tireless and successful efforts to create moments of genuine learning and to give voice to marginalized members of the Baldwin community.” In her essay for the award, Noor wrote, “Though it may seem easier to keep silent, it is more difficult to leave issues unaddressed and pretend they aren’t such a big deal. I have realized that people of different backgrounds view things differently, and that difference is valuable.” Noor attended a celebratory program at the National Constitution Center last spring with other award recipients. They will each receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years if they choose to enroll at Widener as a freshman for undergraduate studies, where they would be named an Apogee Scholar. As an Apogee Scholar, students participate in a leadership development program at the Oskin Leadership Institute, which includes earning a Widener leadership certificate and participating in a variety of on-campus leadership development activities. “At Widener University, we are dedicated to developing leaders of character who become engaged citizens. We are proud to recognize the next generation of leaders who reflect our core principles through this program,” said Dr. Wollman.

Annual Event Benefits The Philadelphia Orchestra he Philadelphia Orchestra’s Main Line Committee presents its Notable Kitchen Tour and Chefs’ Tastings on Thursday, November 7, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This popular self-guided tour of the Main Line’s most unique kitchens is presented for the tenth time since 2009 for the benefit of The Philadelphia Orchestra. A highlight this year is a country compound featuring friendly alpacas. Each of the impressive kitchens in six private homes in the western suburbs from Gladwyne to Newtown Square will showcase a “notable” local chef offering a variety of samples of their cuisine for tasting by tour attendees. Included are Aneu, At The Table BYOB, Aux Petit Delices, Feast Your Eyes Catering, Marokko, Senseo Coffee, and The Bercy. Multiple florists will provide beautiful flower arrangements to accentuate each home’s decor. They are Amaranth Florist, Arrange Design LLC, Cottage Flowers, Flowers By Priscilla, StudioFlora, and Valley Forge Flowers. In addition, attendees will be inspired by viewing unique table settings from Li Halpern Events, Living Well with Pat Nogar, Ruby Tableaux, and The Perfect Setting. Lenox Corporation has once again donated eight place settings of china (Contempo Luxe), stemware (Tuscany Classic) and flatware (Sculpt) that will be displayed in one of the homes and will be a “Special Raffle” item. Valuable raffle baskets displayed in the homes will contain gift certificates and interesting items for the home.
