PAFA Presents First Major Retrospective of Artist Rina Banerjee he Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) presents its major fall exhibition, “Rina Banerjee: Make Me a Summary of the World,” the first mid-career retrospective on the contemporary practice of Rina Banerjee, co-organized with the San José Museum of Art, California (SJMA). Known for her large-scale sculptures and installations made from materials sourced throughout the world, Banerjee’s works investigate the splintered experiences of identity, tradition, and culture, prevalent in diasporic communities. “Make Me a Summary of the World” will be on view to the public from October 27, 2018 through March 31, 2019 in the galleries at PAFA. It will be accompanied by extensive programming and a full-color, 160-page catalogue copublished with PAFA and SJMA.

The exhibition will then open at SJMA from May 18, 2019 - October 6, 2019 before embarking on a national tour. Exploring the Legacy of Racial Injustice in America at Haverford’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery fter decades of research, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) released a 2015 report documenting over 4,000 instances of lynching of African Americans in 12 Southern states between 1877 and 1950. A 2017 follow-up report detailed an additional 300-plus racial terror lynchings in eight states in the North and Midwest during that same period. “The Legacy of Lynching: Confronting Racial Terror in America,” which will run at Haverford College's Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery from October 26 through December 16, seeks to spark an honest conversation about the legacy of racial injustice in America today by presenting EJI’s groundbreaking research alongside complementary digital media, documentary film, contemporary artworks, and archival materials. Lynching, which emerged after slavery was officially abolished in the United States in 1865 as a violent means of exerting racial control, continued through the 20th century as a way to fortify white supremacy and suppress African-American civil rights. Its after-effects live on to this day in mass incarceration and the disproportionate sentencing of people of color. Last year the Brooklyn Museum, in collaboration with EJI and with support from Google, organized an exhibition, “The Legacy of Lynching,” to confront this history by juxtaposing audio-visual presentations of EJI’s research findings with art drawn from the museum’s collection. The exhibition included artists whose practices respond to racism

in the United States and focused on personal stories, not explicit photographs or other representations of racial violence, to illustrate America’s long history of racial terror. This fall, “The Legacy of Lynching traveling exhibition will be on view for the first time outside of Brooklyn and will feature new, original curatorial contributions from Kalia Brooks Nelson. In addition to the exhibit’s traveling materials, the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery run of “The Legacy of Lynching” includes works by Josh Begley, Alexandra Bell, Sonya Clark, Ken Gonzales-Day, Ayana V Jackson, Titus Kaphar, Glenn Ligon, Lorna Simpson, Hank Willis Thomas, and more, as well as archival materials drawn from the College’s Quaker and Special Collections, the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Special Collections and University Archive. “The Legacy of Lynching: Confronting Racial Terror in America” will be on view October 26 through December 16 at Haverford College’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery. 3rd Annual Great Pumpkin Carve in Chadds Ford he Chadds Ford Historical Society hosts the 43rd Annual Great Pumpkin Carve on October 18-20, 2018. The Great Pumpkin Carve is the quintessential Brandywine Valley experience, and is a great way to get in the Halloween spirit. The Great Pumpkin Carve was started by artists Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth and Jimmy Lynch in the 1970s to decorate the Chadds Ford Inn for Halloween. The event has grown each year, and is now an autumn tradition for thousands of people. This family-friendly festival features 70 local artists competing by carving huge pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns on Thursday night. The pumpkins, which may weigh as much as 400 pounds, will be lit and displayed at the end of the carving on Thursday, and illuminated again on Friday and Saturday nights. Pumpkins are judged and winners declared in several categories: Best Overall, Most Halloween, Best Carving, Most Original and Best Use of Pumpkin. In addition to the amazing pumpkins, the Great Pumpkin Carve offers entertainment for adults and children alike including live music, raffle prizes, hayrides, pumpkin painting and other fun activities. This year the organization is enlarging the pumpkin patch to provide more room and easier viewing of the pumpkins, adding more admissions lines to reduce waiting time, bringing back and expanding the Haunted Trail and featuring local wine, beer and cider vendors in addition to great local food. The Great Pumpkin Carve is held on the grounds of the Chadds Ford Historical Society, 1736 N. Creek Road, Chadds Ford, PA 19317. Admission is $15 for adults; $5 for children; free for children 6 and under. CFHS members are free with membership card. All ticketing is at the gate. Free parking is available at the event. The Great Pumpkin Carve begins at 4 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, October 18 and 19, with extended hours on Saturday, October 20, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Registration is required to enter the pumpkin carving competition. The Mystery of Skara Brae at MUFON uthor and cosmology scholar Laird Scranton shares amazing similarities in ancient cultures spread over the globe – Egypt, China and Scotland – in his multimedia program at Main Line MUFON Tuesday, October 16 at Tredyffrin Public Library, Strafford, PA. Around 3200 BC the first organized farming village in the United Kingdom, known as Skara Brae, appeared on Orkney Island in Northern Scotland. Over the next six hundred years, these villagers constructed megalithic sites exhibiting the stoneworking tradition that later produced such structures as Stonehenge. Who were these ancient people? Traditional archaeology tells us little about the artifacts found there. An avid researcher of world cultures, Scranton has discovered numerous “signatures” of an archaic, pre-Vedic (5000 B.C.) creation tradition reflected in Orkney architecture—the same symbolic tradition shown in ancient cultures in India, Egypt, China, and South America. These “signatures” take the form of recognizable megalithic forms, names of localities, and even in the details of an obscure burial tradition. Furthermore, the DNA of animal and plant species unique to Orkney Island appear to coincide with the same region of the Middle East’s Fertile Crescent. Could the Orkney Island people represent the Pharaonic tradition in ancient Egypt, linked by many of the same traditions, rituals and concepts? His studies in comparative cosmology have served help synchronize aspects of ancient African, Egyptian, Vedic, Chinese, Polynesian, and other world cosmologies, and have led to an alternate approach to reading Egyptian hieroglyphic words. His degree is in English from Vassar College. He is the author of The Science of the Dogon: Decoding the African Mystery Tradition (2006); Sacred Symbols of the Dogon: The Key to Advanced Science in the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs (2007); Seeking the Primordial: Exploring Root Concepts of Cosmological Creation (2017); The Mystery of Skara Brae: Neolithic Scotland and the Origins of Ancient Egypt (2017), The Velikovsky Heresies (2012); China's Cosmological Prehistory (2014); and Point of Origin (2015). Scranton appears in John Anthony West’s “Magical Egypt” DVD documentary series, and Carmen Boulter’s “The Pyramid Code,” (Documentary Channel). He has been a guest on George Noory’s “Coast-to-Coast AM” and “Red Ice Radio” in Sweden. He has presented at Walter D. Cruttenden’s annual CPAK (Conference on Precession and Ancient Knowledge), the A.R.E. Then, Little Red and the Wolf race to Grandma’s house in a new translation of “Little Red Riding Hood,” specially commissioned by DVOC. Most people know about “Little Red Riding Hood,” but this version is special! It was written in 1911 by César Cui, specifically for Aleksei Romanov, the 7-year-old son of the last Tsar of Russia. This is the first time it’s ever been performed in the Western Hemisphere, and with supertitles of the new English translation, everyone’ll be able to enjoy the story. And Cui’s musical setting of this beloved tale has a happy ending; the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood learn important lessons about honesty and forgiveness. “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge” is a charming tale by Hildegarde H. Swift about a New York lighthouse that watches as the George Washington Bridge is built, almost right on top of it. It feels small and unneeded next to the massive structure, but soon learns that everyone, big or little, has their own special place in the world. Imaginatively staged by Albert Chaney, this is an engaging combination of live action and projected illustrations, breathing life and emotion into a timeless story. And you won’t want to miss the costume contest! Children of all ages are encouraged to wear costumes portraying characters from “Little Red Riding Hood” or their favorite fairy tale. Prizes will be awarded for both categories, for children and adults. The Little Red Lighthouse will be portrayed by soprano Elizabeth Oliver and the Great Gray Bridge by baritone Kevin Durkin. The cast of “Little Red Riding Hood” includes soprano Rachel Martin as Little Red Riding Hood, mezzo-soprano Elise Bjordammen as the Grandmother, soprano Angelica Feliciano as the Mother, mezzo-soprano Emily Byrne as the Wolf, and soprano Faye Macey as the Hunter. Stage Director Albert Chaney and Music Director Isaac Young team up to bring these scores to life with their creative and artistic interpretations. The chorus was prepared under the direction of Chorus Master Dan Schauble. The production takes place on Sunday, November 4 at 4 p.m. at the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center, 7 Lock Street, Philadelphia, PA 19127, just off Main Street in Manayunk. As the artist’s first retrospective, it traces her work over twenty years, culminating in sculptures made for the 57th Venice Biennale and 2017 Prospect Triennial in New Orleans—important exhibitions that reflect one of the most exciting periods of recognition in Rina’s career.” Bringing together several of Banerjee’s monumental installations in conversation with more than two dozen sculptures, as well as a thorough selection of works on paper, “Make Me a Summary of the World” will transform PAFA into an otherworldly and multi-sensory space. Using a variety of gathered materials ranging from African tribal jewelry to colorful feathers, light bulbs, and Murano glass, Banerjee’s art celebrates diversity at every level. These sensuous assemblages present themselves simultaneously as familiar and unfamiliar, thriving on tensions between visual cultures and raising questions about exoticism, cultural appropriation, globalization, and feminism. Her works are paired with thought-provoking and poetic titles that are works of art in themselves, ranging in length from 50 to 180 words. “The upcoming exhibition on the work of Rina Banerjee is an ambitious project for PAFA and its museum,” said Brooke Davis Anderson, Edna S. Tuttleman Director of the Museum. “It’s also a necessary project for the first art museum in the country, because Banerjee continually and aggressively examines what it means to be an American artist. Through the lens of gender, race, class, and from the point of view of being from somewhere else, Rina voices through color, form, texture, scale, and found objects conversations about democracy and equality.” Susan Sayre Batton, Oshman Executive Director of the San José Museum of Art, said, “We are thrilled at SJMA to co-organize this monumental exhibition of world-renowned artist Rina Banerjee. Bringing her work to the people of Silicon Valley and the West Coast reiterates SJMA’s dedication to foster awareness of artists’ broad contributions to society. Banerjee’s art explores globalization, isolation, and identity—themes that reflect our community.” Lauren Schell Dickens, curator at the San José Museum of Art, added: “In her work, Rina disrupts conventional notions of identity, delving into the complex territory of cultural fragmentation and self-identification, which makes her an important voice today. We’re particularly excited to be presenting this rich examination of her work in San José, which is home to so many diasporic groups of varied cultural backgrounds.” Born in Calcutta, India in 1963, Banerjee was raised in the United Kingdom and United States. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Polymer Engineering from Case Western in 1993 and took a job as a polymer research chemist upon graduation. After several years, she left the science profession to pursue her MFA in Fine Arts from Yale University. Banerjee currently divides her time between New York City and Philadelphia. She has exhibited in New York, Paris, London, Tokyo, New Delhi, and notably in a solo exhibition at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC in 2013. Her works are also included in many private and public collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Centre George Pompidou, Paris, France; Queens Museum (NY); and the Brooklyn Museum (NY). PAFA recently acquired two of Banerjee’s artworks for its permanent collection and they are included in the exhibition. “Rina Banerjee: Make Me a Summary of the World” is co-organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the San José Museum of Art, California.

11th Annual Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive at Lankenau Medical Center he 11th Annual Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive at Lankenau Medical Center will be held on October 15 and 16, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days, at Lankenau’s Annenberg Conference Center. The goal is to collect 300 units of blood at this drive, enabling the organization to help as many as 900 hospital patients! All presenting blood donors will receive a gift bag, free entry into prize drawings, special refreshments, and free parking. In addition, as part of an ongoing “Community CHAllenge” initiative, Carol’s family will make donations to the Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund and Narberth Ambulance Company for every unit of blood collected at the drive. The blood drive honors the memory of local resident Carol H. Axelrod, who became dependent on blood products while being treated for multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Because blood was available every time she needed a transfusion, she was able to celebrate her 60th birthday and see her granddaughter turn three years old before she passed away in July 2008. Her family founded the memorial blood drive later that year, with a mission of enabling other patients to spend more time with their loved ones by working to ensure that lifesaving blood products are always available for those who need them. The blood drives held in Carol’s memory, which now take place four times each year in different locations, have collected enough blood products to have helped more than 11,000 patients.

ri-County Concerts Association continues its Emerging Artists Series this season by presenting clarinetist Narek Arutyunian on Sunday, October 21, at 3 p.m. at Eastern University’s McInnis Auditorium located at 1300 Eagle Road, St. Davids, PA. Mr. Arutyunian will perform with pianist Christopher Goodpasture. His program, which is titled “Folk Inspirations,” includes Brahms’ Sonata No. 1 in F minor and works by Schumann, de Falla, Bartók, and Schoenfield. As First Prize Winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Mr. Arutyunian performed to rave reviews in debut recitals in New York at Merkin Concert Hall and in Washington, DC at the Kennedy Center. The Washington Post stated that he “reaches passionate depths with seemingly effortless technical prowess and beguiling sensitivity.” He has performed as a soloist with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Alice Tully Hall, The Boston Pops, Prague Radio Symphony, and the Kaliningrad Philharmonic, Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, and Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. He has also given recitals at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, New York’s Morgan Library and Museum, Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, and performing arts centers, universities, and festivals across the United States. Additionally, he has performed extensively internationally, including at Paris’ Musée du Louvre, Genoa’s Palazzo del Principe, Poland’s Krzyzowa Music Festival, Germany’s Usedomer Musikfestival, and Musica Viva’s Huntington Estate and Sydney Festivals in Australia. He has received acclaim for his educational outreach programs in New York City public schools and around the country. Born in Armenia, Mr. Arutyunian moved to Moscow with his family when he was three. As a teenager, he won First Prizes in Prague’s International Young Musicians Competition and Moscow’s Musical Youth of the Planet Competition. He graduated from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory and received a Bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School and a Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, which he attended on a Leon Russianoff Memorial Scholarship. Tri-County Concerts is one of the nation’s oldest chamber music presenters in continuous operation since its founding in 1941. The organization is proud of its illustrious history as an all-volunteer organization that has brought the finest musicians to the community it serves.

DeLissio to Host 78th Town Hall Meeting Oct. 18 tate Rep. Pamela A. DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., will hold her 78th Town Hall meeting at 7 p.m. October 18 in the library at Belmont Hills Elementary School, 200 School St., Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. There will be plenty of free parking spaces available to attendees. DeLissio will focus on the critical issues that have not been dealt with in this session, including, redistricting, campaign finance, criminal justice, and voting reforms. In addition, DeLissio will discuss how state government may now play an even more impactful role on citizens’ lives as a result of federal decisions. “There is much work to do in Harrisburg with very few session days remaining before the term ends November 30th. I want to make sure my constituents are aware how the legislature has failed to confront some of the bigger issues that affect Pennsylvanians,” DeLissio said. “I have conducted town halls during my entire time in office and I always welcome new people who may have not yet attended,” DeLissio added. “The location rotates throughout the district and it is great to see folks from all corners of the district attend. DeLissio to Host APPRISE Counselor State. Rep. Pamela DeLissio, D-Montgomery/Phila., will offer four sessions with an APPRISE counselor in her district office through the fall open enrollment period for Medicare, which takes place from October 15 to December 7. APPRISE, a program of the state Department of Aging, is a free health insurance counseling program designed to help older Pennsylvanians with Medicare, Medicare Supplemental Insurance, Medicaid and long-term care insurance. DeLissio’s office will hold sessions on Oct. 17, Oct. 30, Nov. 13 and Nov. 28. The counselor will be available from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. DeLissio has offered an APPRISE counselor in her office monthly since 2011 to assist with Medicare questions.
