PlanB will reimburse you for any irrecoverable expenses incurred by you in respect of transport, catering, accommodation, photographs, flowers , hired wedding attire of the wedding party as a result of unavoidable cancellation. Also covered are lost deposits due to non-appearance of suppliers, loss or damage to wedding dress, wedding rings or stolen gifts. . ADVENTURE BOOT CAMP

CALLING ALL BRIDES! Take up the challenge and be a thinner, fitter, more confident Bride... Adventure Boot Camp for women - Inspires and motivates women throughout South Africa to create positive changes within themselves. There is no better time than just before the most important and special day of your life. Brides Essence Editor Justine decided to take up the challenge and here is her story... At School the only sports I ever enjoyed were swimming and water polo. I lived for the beach and loved to water-ski; I was not that good at ball or land sports and definitely never ran anywhere. At 19 I found myself jogging three mornings a week on the Sea Point Promenade with a friend, and doing exercise classes and swimming 40 lengths in the pool at the then Health and Racquet club with my sister. I weighed 49 kg and looked and felt pretty good. In the years that followed I went to gym intermittently with no dedicated plan or program. When I got married at 25...I weighed 51kg and maintained between 51 – 54 kg during the 8years I spent living in the SA bushveld only picking up and losing 11 kg when I had my first child at 29 years. In my early thirties I started exercising again, doing yoga twice a week and Aerobics/Tai-Bo classes three times a week, and at 34 around the time I got a divorce I was dedicated to exercising, and maintaining my weight... this was the one time in my life that I can say I had complete control over my body. I then met my current husband at 35 and I stopped exercising completely, at 36 I stopped smoking and at 37 years I fell pregnant and picked up 26kg’s. I never lost enough weight after the birth and all these combined to result in a lot more ‘Me’ than I had ever anticipated. It helps to achieve this state when you have a man that loves you and thinks that you look wonderful any which way. So I eased myself into a second marriage at 39, a heavier bride with two beautiful children. At 40 one has a sense of complacency that would not have become the frenetic 20 year old that I once was, except for the fact that I have some incredible pairs of size 32 denims. My collection of

too small ‘JFK’ pants are yearning for the labels to be ripped off, and the fabulous classics that I bought in the 90’s from ‘Daniel Hechter’ that have just never dated are as good as new -waiting to be worn, once again! We contacted Adventure Boot Camp as a test for all you ‘Brides to be’ and I decided to sell myself to the challenge of ‘Guinea Pig’. Well, I am so glad I did... In the last 4 weeks, I have smiled a lot. I have laughed; I have met some dynamic and interesting women. I have sweated and endured, and I have frozen as the Johannesburg winter nights are pretty chilly. I have skipped, run, jumped and tried and tested every muscle group in my body especially the ones I never knew I had. Exercising in a group is not only fun it is motivating and disciplining. Kerry Lester who takes the Adventure Boot Camp in Bedfordview where I joined is inspiring and not only that, she is dedicated and she makes you feel comfortable. Everyone is equal, no matter how unfit or overweight. She really takes the time to make you feel fantastic; she guides you through each movement and task and corrects or motivates each and every individual in the class. Not only that she will remember something you told her the week before...Kerry thank you...but you are not rid of me yet I have just registered for Camp No 2.

YOU ARE ASKING WHAT I ACHIEVED? In Week One and Week 4 of Adventure Boot Camp we did a timed run, timed push ups and timed sit ups and we measured ourselves. By

the end of Week 4, bearing in mind I missed 4 camp days due to unforeseen circumstances. I had increased my running time by just under 1 minute, I increased my push ups by 14, I did not increase my sit ups ( I attest this to the cold air). I lost 1 cm on each arm, 4cm on my chest, 3 cm on my waist so I am eventually acquiring shape and 2 cm on both my left and my right thigh – I am ecstatic. Just in-case you ask, no I did not diet, although I did increase my water intake. I love fruit and vegetables and have forever been a salad freak. I drink green tea and have a weakness for skinny cappuccinos. I only buy fat free milk and fat free yoghurt, I am not big on take-way food and I only eat chicken and fish. I stopped eating red meat about 11 years ago and I am sure that the decrease in protein along with a slowed metabolism (from quitting smoking after 21 years) did play a role in my weight gain.

is absolutely no excuse. I promise you Brides to be – you will be so glad you did! If you are coming from overseas to get married here, why not come a month early and do a camp, there is no better way of getting to know our country than sweating it out with great South African Women. Adventure Boot Camp for Women and Brides Essence are calling all brides to take up the ABC Challenge. Register now on www.adventurebootcamp.co.za or call their National Head Office on 021 447 2746.

I ended Week 4 with an Adventure Boot Camp Certificate with Most Improved as Miss Jolly Roger – that was for my smiles! Thanks Kerry! I am nowhere near where I want to be to squeeze back into those blue suede’s I used to love or those ‘fab’ size 32 jeans; although I am busy with my second Adventure Boot Camp and I am more enthusiastic than ever; looking forward to continuing to lose centimetres; feeling energetic, fitter and healthier. Brides Essence challenges you to join the Adventure Boot Camp for Women today. Be inspired and motivated; with camps all around SA there

A paean of praise for Gautrain

WRITER: HENDRINA WESTOLL

We

South Africans tend to be perennial pessimists when we are promised good things. Be honest – think back. How did you react when you first heard that we had won the right to host the World Cup? Certainly, there was joy and excitement, but wasn’t it tinged with a large dollop of scepticism? It was no different when Gautrain was announced. Doubt and criticism floated over the country like the spaceship from the movie District 9! Controversy bounced back and forth, covering every aspect of the design, construction, operation and future vision until we didn’t really know what to think or believe. It is almost as though we are hesitant to get proud and excited about our country and our achievements. The irony is that now that Gautrain is up and running – smoothly and efficiently, I might add – it’s all “ho-hum” and everyone is already

just taking it for granted. But this is really no ordinary commuter train. South Africa has notched up an amazing world-beater with the construction of Gautrain, defying all the critics, enrapturing the believers and wowing visitors from all over our globe. Gautrain is now an acknowledged leader in its field, on a par with modern links like the Canada Line Rapid Transit, Gotthard Base Tunnel and London Crossrail. It’s been selected as a TOP 100 Global Project for its dynamism and potential to transform regional mobility. It is the largest Public-Private-Partnership in Africa and the largest rail infrastructure project under construction in the world. Its socioeconomic development strategy will ensure that previously disadvantaged groups benefit from the project. The list of awards it has already garnered is really impressive. Countless

Gold Quill awards from the African Region of the International Association of Business Communicators for its excellent media, communication and marketing strategies; international awards for Excellence in Project Management, for Innovation in Rail and Transit at the Best Practices for Sustaining Infrastructure Conference in Baltimore; a prestigious Fulton award for Excellent Use of Concrete; a Greening of the Construction Supply Chain award from the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and SA Consumer Goods Council – and the list goes on and on. Gautrain has also scored a coup with its informative and entertaining websites. The official “Gautrain” site www.gautrain.co.za has clear, concise information about the Gold Card needed for travel: how and where to purchase it, how to secure it, how to load it, what benefits it offers – even comparisons with how much a trip on the Gautrain

will cost compared to a journey in your private car. All the details any potential traveller needs are easily located and understood. Visitors can also access all necessary information from the Call Centre on 0800 428 87246. And the sites for Kids and Learners are delightful! Take a look at www. mytrain.co.za and www.kids.gautrain.co.za. Exquisitely designed, packed with fascinating facts and information, they are entertaining, instructive and fun-filled. The first phase from Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport is complete. The second phase to Pretoria through Midrand will be ready next year. If you have not been for a ride on the Gautrain yet, you must make a point of doing so. You will not be disappointed – it really is impressive!

TRUE LIFE BY GINA HARTOOG

Ties that bind

South African celebrities share their special memories with us. Every wedding is a unique event, a combination of individual taste and character. Brides Essence Feature Writer Gina asked some well-known South African personalities about their take on weddings, romance and what it means to stay together.

NEWLY WEDS MAMMA MIA Actor Anrich Herbst, well-known for his roles in Orkney Snork Nie and Egoli, will play the role of the charming Sam Carmichael in the South African stage production of MAMMA MIA! Anrich and Mia van der Merwe were married in September 2009. They have a baby son. BE: Where were you married and what made your day special? Anrich: “Mia and I were married at the Mount Grace Hotel. Mia expertly organised the entire event. I think the atmosphere is what really stands out for me. We had about 100 guests, mainly close family and friends. It was the little things that really made it a great day...my suit and the most expensive tie I have ever had in my life! Everything came together perfectly.” BE: What is your take on love and marriage? Anrich: “I definitely believe in marrying

for love. This isn’t my first marriage so I know what it is like when things don’t work out. Having said that, I think things are different for us. We have a son Kristiaan ... and that changes the dynamics a bit. It changes the way you see things and making things work becomes essential. It’s not just the two of us... there is another little person to consider.” BE: What message would you give to couples starting out together? Anrich: “Don’t lose yourself. Keep your individuality within the marriage. You are probably madly in love right now and that is great, but remember that you both have friends. It’s not about living for you but rather living as yourself, together.” BE: What part of South Africa would you still like to discover and why? Anrich: “I think the south eastern Drakensburg... with the greenery, the water, big trees. I’d love to take time out to discover that.”

MARRIED FOR 1 YEAR RADIO DJ Radio DJ Paul Rotherham has been a part of the Rude Awakening team on 94.7 Highveld Stereo for ten years. Paul met Zina in 2008 and the couple were engaged the same year. BE: Were you born in South Africa? Paul: No, I was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon in Warwickshire in England. We came to South Africa in 1983 and Benoni has

10 | ISSUE 2

been my home ever since… although British by birth, I really consider myself South African. BE: What is your take on love and marriage? Paul: “Having met my wife and soul mate, it’s all about partnership and being in a safe place where you can be yourself and feel totally secure in your love for each other. Marriage means building a wonderful life together and I’m very lucky to have

found an incredible partner where all of this is reality!” BE: Did you get married in South Africa and if so where? Paul: “At Toadbury Hall in Muldersdrift.” BE: What stands out most in your mind about the day? Paul: “Our wedding was intimate with only our closest friends and family there to witness and celebrate our special day with us. The atmosphere in the small cha-

pel was incredible, from the processional right through to the exchanging of the rings.” BE: Where did you go on honeymoon? Paul: “We had family here from the UK so we chose to delay our honeymoon and spend time with them. We are planning a holiday to Mauritius later this year and who knows, maybe we will come back with a honeymoon baby!”

MARRIED FOR 2 YEARS MAMMA MIA!

there was lots of singing and dancing.”

Wedding bells rang for celebrity couple Murray Todd and Jo Galloway in 2008 at The Westcliff Hotel. The couple met on the set of That’ll be the Day: The Buddy Holly Story. Murray will play Bill in MAMMA MIA!

BE: How would you sell South Africa to an international couple looking to have a destination wedding? Murray: “You can go anywhere in this country to find a beautiful location and there’s a great chance that it will be sunny. We have great food, great service...and far as other overseas destinations are concerned I think you get great value for your money here.”

BE: Were you born in South Africa? Murray: “Yes, on the East Rand in Benoni.” BE: Tell us what happened just before your wedding. Murray: “The guy who was making our rings took them and our money and disappeared. On the morning of the wedding (which happened to be Easter Sunday) we were running around Cresta looking for rings. I got a ring but the only one we could find for Jo was a plastic ring. In the end the day went very well. It was a beautiful time and Jo and I felt that we were just surrounded by love. We had about 130 guests. I had four bestman and she had four brides-maids .We both come from performing families so

BE: Where did you go on honeymoon? Murray: “We went to Bali for 12 days then on to Singapore for six days to hook up with a South Africa musical production there.” BE: What is your take on love and marriage? Murray: “On the day you definitely put everything in and mean it went you say that it’s forever. My wife and I believe in the institution of marriage very much. For some people it just doesn’t work but for us it definitely does.”

an evening wedding. Just being up there at that time of the day was very special. People came from all over to attend. It was very important for me to have a choir and we had a really beautiful one. There was a beautiful atmosphere and the food was great. I think music was an important part of the day. Paul is in the industry and he knew what he wanted.”

MARRIED FOR 3 YEARS MAMMA MIA! Award-winning actress Gina Shmukler will take the stage as mother-of-thebride Donna Sheridan in MAMMA MIA! With a list of impressive performances behind her name, Gina has captured the hearts of audiences around the world. Gina and her husband Paul have been married for three years. BE: Tell us about your wedding. What stands out most in your mind? Gina: “I lived in America for seven years. I came back to South Africa just one month before the wedding... so that was already quite a change. We got married at Koyama, a martial arts dojo, on the top of Northcliff Hill. It was a traditional Jewish ceremony...

BE: What message would you give to couples starting a life together? Gina: “It gets better after the first year. Our first was the most difficult, not only with getting married but also with me moving back to Jo’burg after been away for so long. My message is to just be patient and hang in there. It makes a huge difference if you want to make things work. Don’t be frightened by change.” BE: Where did you go on honeymoon? Gina: “We went to Xai Xai in Mozambique. I wanted a honeymoon in Africa. It was the most glorious place, right across the road from the beach and there was no one in sight. We spent a week without TV or interruptions, just us, some good books and together time.”

MARRIED FOR 4 YEARS MAMMA MIA! Marlee van der Merwe is a talented singer, dancer and choreographer and will be part of the MAMMA MIA cast. Marlee and Frans have been married for four years. BE: Were you born in South Africa? Marlee: “I was born in Phalaborwa.” BE: Did you get married in South Africa and if so where? Marlee: “We got married on a Thursday evening at Avianto in Muldersdrift. BE: What stands out most about your special day? Marlee: “The week before the wedding it was raining all the time. That day dawned sunny and there were butterflies everywhere. We wanted to do things differently and I think this is what made the day special. We had our photos taken before the ceremony, as the sun was setting. I didn’t walk down the aisle to the Wedding March but asked a friend to play the violin. She walked down and we followed behind. My attendants carried small lamps with candles. We had a lot of candles everywhere, it was really beautiful. We gave every guest a chilli plant not chocolates and we gave the bouquet and the garter with a bottle of wine to the couple at our wedding who was married the longest. The day was intimate and special.” BE: Where did you go on Honeymoon? Marlee: “We went on a cruise to Bazaruto Islands...it was absolutely gorgeous. After that we spent some time in the Drakensberg.”

TRUE LIFE

MARRIED FOR 5 YEARS SABC 2 PRESENTER Leanne Manas, popular SABC 2 Morning Live presenter, and her husband Marc Menelaou were married at the Lebanese Maronite Church in September 2005. The couple celebrated their reception at the Liban Conference and Banqueting Centre next door. They have a son, Alexandro. BE: What made your wedding an event to remember? Leanne: “What was different about our wedding was the fusion between Greek Orthodox and Lebanese Maronite religious ceremonies. We had a joint service and it was a real education for our guests that were not too familiar with the traditions. The whole wedding build up was special. I was involved in everything. I really wanted to be a part of every detail. I did not want to just leave it up to a wedding planner and then arrive on the day. The actual day was incredible... arriving at the church and standing at the top of the aisle realising this day was all about the beginning of the rest of our lives! It was a scary moment, but exhilarating at the same time.” BE: How would you sell South Africa to an international couple looking to have a destination wedding? Leanne: “You can have any type of wedding your heart desires. If you want a beach – you have hundreds of the best beaches in the world to choose from. We have world class venues that cater for all different types of needs – both religious and cultural. Getting married in the great African bush under African sky with the big five watching on is possibly a dream come true for anybody and is more than possible in South Africa. You can even have a shark diving wedding!” BE: What is your message to couples starting out together? Leanne: “Enjoy every moment of the experience. You will have loads of arguments of little stupid things in the preparations, but that is very normal. The main thing is that you savour every moment in the build up and when the day arrives, stop worrying about everything and bask in the glory of all your hard work! It is the most special day of your life that will live with you forever. Do not wish it away – because hopefully it will be a once in a lifetime adventure.”

MARRIED FOR 10 YEARS SINGER Angel-tongued songbird Nianell and her husband Andrew Thompson tied the knot in the Magaliesburg a little over 10 years ago on Freedom Day. Nianell’s fifth album Sand & Water is now available. The couple have triplet daughters. BE: Where were you born? Nianell: “I was born in Omaruru, Namibia.” BE: How long have you been in South Africa? Nianell:” I came to SA in 1990” BE: Tell us about your day. What was unique and amazing about it? Nianell: “It was a very intimate wedding with only 40 guests – mainly close family and some dear friends. We did the ceremony in a small chapel at the venue. My colour for the day was burgundy. I remember when I had to do my vows I

felt so emotional and at one point I kept quiet for a long time, just trying to compose myself. Later that night in our room Andrew said to me that he thought I had changed my mind about marrying him. The reception was great and my sister Riana sang for us. Instead of a wedding cake, we had a treasure box filled with Ferrero Rocher chocolates, which we handed out personally to everyone.” BE: You’ve just celebrated 10 years together. Tell us more... Nianell: “We renewed our vows at Valley Lodge. It was almost the same as our wedding but this time my colour was lilac. Because I’m so used to planning events, it took me about three to four days to arrange everything.” BE: What part of SA would you still like to discover and why? Nianell: “Clarens. I believe it snows there and I’ve never seen snow.”

MARRIED FOR SIXTEEN YEARS EX- MISS SOUTH AFRICA It was back in 1992 that Amy Kleinhans-Curd won the Miss SA title. Amy is the also founder of Dial-a-Teacher, a telephonic helpline for children. Leighton and Amy have been married for 16 years and have three children and a foster daughter. BE: Where were you married? Amy: Cape Town BE: What stands out most about your day? Amy: “Taking our wedding pictures on the beach at sunset.” BE: What is your take on love and marriage? Amy: “I believe in the institution of marriage purely because I believe its God’s wish for us to have one partner and also it is a wonderful environment in which to raise children. The family unit within marriage is a strong pillar of society given that the marriage should be a place of security, love and support to both partners.” BE: What is your message to brides and grooms starting a life together? Amy: “My advice would be to remember that each couple works according to their own ‘recipe’. What works for one won’t work for another. Be careful of having preconceived ideas of how things ‘should’ work. Instead keep the line of communication open at all times regardless of which area you dealing with and secondly there is so much you can learn from your partner so try and keep yourself as flexible as possible so that you can enrich one another’s lives wherever possible.”

years and had been living in Milton Keynes in England. I received an offer to work on cruise ships and ‘eventually’ asked Sonja to marry me it was now or never. We got married in the most romantic place on earth... Bletchley Magistrates Court in England... (I am being very sarcastic - it must be one of the ugliest towns in the UK). I still wore my stage outfit and we have exactly one picture of that day.”

MARRIED FOR TWENTY YEARS ILLUSIONIST Popular illusionist, motivational speaker and author Wolfgang Riebe married his wife Sonja over 20 years ago in the United Kingdom. Wolfgang enthrals audiences around the globe with his mind-blowing magic and special brand of comedy. BE: Tell us about your wedding. What was unique about it? Wolfgang: “We had been engaged for seven

BE: Where did you go on Honeymoon? Wolfgang: “Well, the beginning of our relationship and the long engagement may have been a bit weird, but we made up for it on our honeymoon. A week after we got married we left on an 11-month contract on the original ‘Love Boat’. We spent six months in the Caribbean and six months in Alaska. As a headline act on the ship, I only did about two shows per cruise – with Sonja as part of the act. The rest of the time we were full passengers. It taught us to communicate and be honest with each other and gave us 24 hours per day to really get to know each other.” BE: How would you sell SA to an international couple looking to have a destination wedding? Wolfgang: “The South Africa tourism board has a logo: ‘The whole world in one country.’ Today, after having worked in 125 different countries, from Vietnam to the Antarctic, I can honestly say

that South Africa is indeed that. Objectively I feel that we have everything in this beautiful country of ours.” BE: What is your take on love and marriage? Wolfgang: “In many respects, the fact that Sonja and I were able to travel the world together and discover many of its secrets as a couple, has brought us so very close and enabled us to grow together. Today I am 46 and she is turning 52. Every single day I wake up thankful for every moment together. We had our girls very much later in life, they are now 13 and 11 and find that as a more mature couple, we enjoy them so much more and they have added a new facet to our relationship which is so magical.”

WEDDING CALAMITIES - OOPS! You ask yourself – what can possibly go wrong? • Do not leave your gifts unattended, there have been incidents where gifts, envelopes with cheques and cash have never been seen again. • What about the wedding cake falling or being knocked over, as we have seen in the movies by a hapless guest having an oops. • Stolen Dress – you are kidding – Who would? • An unavoidably torn or damaged wedding dress! • Make sure your rings are safe and sound; imagine your wedding rings are stolen… • Last minute cancellations, certainly a venue would not do this, but what if they double booked you by mistake or cancelled at the last minute? • Lost photographs, runaway photographer...surely not. • Non arrivals – minister, photographer, wedding cake, florist etc – make sure they all have directions to the church and venue. • Electricity for the Music...electricity failures with no backup! • Your marquee is damaged due to a storm or wind… South Africa now has a Plan B for all the wedding calamities that have happened in the past and those that may happen in the future – let them not happen to you! TRUE LIFE

true life celebrity wedding ELOISE CLASEN, MEMBER OF THE MAMMA MIA! ENSEMBLE & NEELS CLASEN,WHO PLAYS THE LEADING ROLE OF HARRY BRIGHT IN MAMMA MIA! SHARE THEIR SPECIAL WEDDING DAY WITH US. THEIR WEDDING TOOK PLACE ON A FAMILY FARM OWNED BY THE EX-SPRINGBOK RUGBY PLAYER JOHAN SPIES ON SATURDAY 9 JANUARY. A marquee tent was erected in a Poplar tree forest on the Ermelo farm. It was decorated with self-made mobiles, fairy lights and natural wild flowers all in shades of green, brown and off-white. The whole wedding had a true ‘Boere-wedding’ feel; each of the 150 guests received an enamel plate, bowl and mug. The mugs were all that was available for guests to drink out of, regardless of their drink of choice, there was an open bar and almost every guest had a turn to play bar man. Potjiekos was served as the main course and for dessert Malva Pudding and custard, both enjoyed out of the provided enamel crockery. The Potjie was kept warm the whole evening and the dessert was put on the tables after the homemade breads and watermelon jam were enjoyed. Both the Bride and Groom had a retinue of six people – and Eloise’s party included two men who were aptly dressed in their casual outfits and sneakers. Eloise arrived on horseback, walking across the field while the congregation waiting in the forest watched her with her bridesmaids and ‘brides-men’. The

ceremony did not take long and with the exchange of a ring and a dog tag the couple was wed. From the moment the couple were introduced for the very first time as Mr. & Mrs. Clasen; the dance-floor opened and the party began. From then on it was the throwing of the garter and bouquet (caught by two male guests, this made the dance thereafter quite interesting). The speeches were also condensed into one touching message from the newlywed couple. The cake was a tower of “Koeksisters.” It was an extraordinary day - weather-wise and the whole forest was encompassed in a huge bubble of love. Overwhelmed, the Clasens had the BEST day of their life!! This is the first time they are in a musical together since getting married. Here is more about our special celebrity MAMMA MIA couple. GETTING MARRIED IN THE USA! HOW DO I BEGIN TO DESCRIBE OUR NUPTIALS? SIMPLY AMAZING! Bride: Stacey Oakley Groom: Sinclair Davis Date: 9th May IN THE BRIDES WORDS: “Our love was not one that had a fairytale beginning or even middle but it is one that will definitely have a fairytale ending.” “We met in college (I was his orientation leader). He was the handsome new guy and I was the popular always active older student. We developed a strong friendship over the next 4 years. In 2005 that changed. The friendship love soon grew into a romantic love that was unstoppable and unbreakable. I knew he had my back and he for sure knew I had his. He proposed on Oct. 20 2007 and we planned our wonderful May wedding.” “We got married in Clifton New Jersey, which isn’t too far from where we live in Teaneck New Jersey. We love Teaneck, as it offers diversity and is only 15 minutes from NYC. We have the choice of travelling easily into the city and retreating to the quiet life of the suburbs. New Jersey offers culture and opportunity; festi-

“Our Wedding venue was the Valley Regency. We would highly recommend this venue to any engaged couple looking to plan an elegant wedding! They were open, helpful, and offered us everything we could have asked for and more, they were great at problem solving and really took care of us and our guests ensuring our wedding day was memorable.”

‘Our entire day was filled with LOVE. Family from far and near came to share in our happiness and for that we were and are truly humbled.’

THE WEDDING DAY: “All the weather forecasts called for rain and clouds. In fact it was raining for the entire week leading up to the wedding. Our outdoor wedding seemed to be doomed but I had no fear. I am a strong believer in the declaring and claiming and I had been claiming a dry morning for our ceremony. I took a drive that night just to get the nerves out and to "talk" to my mom. I told her more than anything all I wanted was for her light to shine. I begged her to let me know that she was there watching over us and happy with us. Sure enough the rain stayed away for our ceremony and some may call it a coincidence but as I was holding my soon to be husband’s hand during the ceremony and we were saying our

African Romance is opening a brand new boutique. The African Romance store is an African community at work, inviting consumers to be a part of and to taste “Africa’s first Luxury”. African Romance is opening a brand new boutique at the Sandton Eye, home of the new Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, in Sandton, Johannesburg The inspiration behind the store’s decor is to present a complete African experience to the consumer, whilst highlighting the primary elements that reflect the ancient nature of diamonds as a commodity. The African Romance brand is connected to the age-old art of story-telling. In the same way as each product item has a story, the store concept tells of ancient traditions such as lekgotlas, where ancient communities gathered to tell stories, share information and interact, manifested in the circular nature of the store and a modern interpretation of the reed boma. The African Romance community transforms the oldest stones on earth into works of art and masterpieces of design and excellence. The images reflected on the focus wall in the new store, are those of their people that proudly work with their hands to produce magnificent jewellery pieces, and the histories of their communities from where the diamonds originate. The constant search for the true meaning of African luxury remains as elusive as Africa’s heritage and African Romance leads the way. An iconic floor-to-ceiling lampshade reflects the romance, rich colours and warmth of the African continent, whilst the African night sky is symbolised by the domed ceiling specked with tiny spotlights (stars) that sparkle like diamonds and illuminate the jewellery on display. These décor elements represent the allure and intrigue of the African Romance brand. In-store focal points include a circular carpet, emblazoned with the African Romance icon. Beautifully African inspired crafted drum displays hold the finest selection of African diamonds and jewellery. The colour palette captures the essence of the romance and the warm luxurious spirit of Africa. The use of rich exotic colours, materials, textures and patterns symbolise the continent’s diverse landscape, and influences of African tradition and culture can be found in the ornate displays that represent a fusion of African elements, including imagery of the roots of a tree that anchor African drum shaped displays units. A row of vertical wooden slates, backlit to create a warm glow, symbolises the reed boma structure one traditionally finds at an African homestead. In summary, the African Romance store represents the rich African continent, which is a melting pot where a variety of societal and cultural expressions mix with the most primitive traditions and the most contemporary art and architecture. African Romance strives to reflect a unique and undeniably African style, where an African aesthetic fuses African fine textured traditional architectural influences with modern day trends. The African Romance, brand is ready for retail expansion and is moving into its ‘second level growth’ with the rollout of unique and distinctly African diamond and jewellery stores. The Sandton Eye store will be amongst the first ‘new look’ retail stores that will be rolled out over the next 12 months. African Romance aspires to be the epitome of African sophistication. TRUE LIFE

BY GINA HARTOOG

Expectant bride Nicolette Da Costa was 16 weeks pregnant when she married Warren Schmidt at an intimate ceremony in Gauteng. Nicolette Da Costa and Warren Schmidt planned to have a baby and live together for a few years before tying the knot. When Nicolette found out that she was expecting, the couple’s plans changed. “I thought perhaps we should get married,” Nicolette recalls. “But I did not really want the stress of planning a wedding later in my pregnancy so we decided to get things done as soon as realistically possible.” Nicolette had about eight weeks to plan her wedding and she roped in her family to help with the arrangements. “I was in my first trimester and feeling a little more tired than usual,” she says. “But thankfully I had a great support system. My sister and mom pitched in to help and this took a lot of pressure off me.” Nicolette chose to wear her sister’s wedding gown. Small adjustments were made for a perfect fit and the sleeves were removed to give the dress a different look. Her shoes were also carefully chosen. “I’m a reflexologist,” she laughs. “I know your feet come first, so I chose a flat pump and added an insole to make sure I was very comfortable.” Looking back, Nicolette says that it was her good support system that was the key in keeping things on track before the wedding. “Another important point is to keep perspective and stay within your budget,”

she advises. “You have to be looking further down the line with the baby coming. We chose to keep things simple and the end result was a wedding with class and flare.” The couple were married at the Germiston Golf Course in May.

Diarise the date – some brides decide on a first trimester wedding when they are not showing, while others feel too ill with morning sickness to even contemplate a wedding. Any time during the first, second or early third trimester is fine. Avoid planning a wedding in the third trimester phase, especially in summer and in case baby decides to make an early appearance. 2. Find the perfect dress – if you are in your first or early second trimester, you

will probably be able to wear a standard wedding gown. If you are going to be further along, have a look at the many maternity wedding dresses available. These dresses are designed with a bump in mind and accentuate curves in the right places. Colour is a personal choice. Choose your shoes carefully to avoid backache and swollen feet. 3. Tweak the menu – Ask the caterers to include a few bottles of non-alcoholic champagne or grape juice and ensure you skip the spicy food. You can always keep heart-burn medication handy on the day, just in case you need it. 4. Test the ring - from about 22 weeks you may notice that your fingers start to swell. This can make your engagement ring very tight and you should remove it. If you do not already have a wedding band, you can order it in the same size as your engagement ring. You may need to purchase a ‘dummy’ ring to use at the ceremony if yours no longer fits.

TRAVEL TIPS

Travelling while Pregnant A POSITIVE PREGNANCY TEST; A PACKED SUITCASE AND A FABULOUS WEDDING DESTINATION. YES, YOU CAN! Pregnancy should not be a reason to shelve your dreams for an exotic wedding. Provided you select the destination carefully, get the right information from your doctor or care-giver and plan the trip at the right time, you can have the wedding you desire. South Africa offers a myriad of different venues for a destination wedding – from the tranquillity of the bushveld to the beauty of the sea or the splendour of a five-star venue. The climate in winter is temperate and summers are hot. No vaccinations are required to enter South Africa, unless you fly in from a Yellow Fever endemic country. This live vaccine is contraindicated in pregnancy and you will not be able to receive it.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP If you have an African bushveld wedding in mind, you must find a venue which does not fall within the country’s malaria area. “Pregnant women must avoid travel to malaria areas during pregnancy,” says Dr Tina Meyer, an aviation medicine

practitioner at the Airport Clinic at OR Tambo International Airport. “Malaria in pregnancy increases the risk of maternal death, miscarriage, stillbirth and low birth weight with associated risk of pre-term birth.” Plan your wedding around your pregnancy and select the best time to travel. “This is probably from around week 16 in the second trimester,” says Jacqui Flint, owner of Baby Love, a baby routine and sleep guidance programme. Flights from Europe and the United States to South Africa generally take between 10 and 18 hours. “Commercial flights are normally safe for pregnant women but most airlines will not accept pregnant women for bookings from about week 36 for a single pregnancy,” adds Dr Meyer.

TRAVEL HEALTH CARE Make an appointment with your doctor or caregiver to discuss your travel plans. “It is essential that all early pre-natal examinations be carried out prior to travel, in order to rule out any possible complications,” says Dr Meyer. Ask about any precautions you can take for diarrhoea and your risk for pre-eclampsia, which may increase with air travel. Venous thrombosis during long

flights may be a concern. Your doctor may suggest an aisle seat so that you can walk around every hour or so. Know your blood group before you depart and follow up with your travel health insurance to make sure your pregnancy (and your baby in case of pre-term birth) is covered. Ask your doctor or travel agency for the contact details of a reputable hospital in a city close to your hotel. Whether you are taking a long flight or travelling within the country by car, a few guidelines can make it a more comfortable journey. “Take a cushion for the small of your back,” advises Jacqui Flint. “For car travel, plan your route beforehand and stop regularly for breaks. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of bottled water.” The African sun is fierce, even in winter, so pack a good sunscreen with a high sun protection factor. “The production of melatonin increases during pregnancy and you are more likely to burn,” says Jacqui. Most doctors advise against tanning while pregnant. Include a few loose, cotton tops and dresses in your travel wardrobe as you often feel much hotter than normal when pregnant.

FLOWERS

BY GINA HARTOOG

*Bouquet trends Something old and something new.... we look at the latest fashion trends in bridal bouquets. THE POSY The language of flowers was used in Victorian times by lovers wanting to exchange messages of romance without their chaperones understanding their secrets. Bridal bouquets did not contain flowers but were made up garlic, herbs and other vegetables. These arrangements were carried as a protection against evil. It was probably Queen Victoria’s own wedding that sparked a change in tradition when edible flowers were introduced into the bouquet. Soon vegetables and herbs lost their magic influences and beautiful, colourful and symbolic flowers replaced them in the wedding bouquet.

The traditional posy was a bunch of flowers grouped together and secured in place with tape and ribbon. For decades brides have used the posy as their bouquet of choice but new fashion trends have brought fresh ideas. Flowers like carnations and baby’s breath, which were once part of the posy, are no longer used, while roses, exotic flowers and daisies are popular again. The stem of the posy can be short or long but must suit the bride’s dress and physique. Sonja Judeel

The centre of the posy, usually constructed from tightly packed roses in a single colour, is edged on the outside with another flower in a contrasting colour. Gerbera daisies are a popular choice for the outside ring of flowers. The look is striking and suits a more formal wedding.

STYLES OF BOUQUETS There are many different types and styles of bouquets available, something to suit the individual taste of every bride and as well the theme and ambience of the wedding. Fashion trends come and go, and so do styles in floral art.

We asked Sonja Judeel, of Monet Flowers in Centurion, Johannesburg to tell us more about the latest bouquet trends.

* BEIDEMEIER BOUQUET

* LOOSE AND LOVELY This is a natural ‘wildflower’ look, where the traditional tightly packed single flower posy is replaced with a mixture of flowers of different lengths and finished off with ribbon. More exotic flowers can be used in these bouquets. They suit a less formal wedding and flowing, ball-room wedding gowns.

Crystal-tipped florist pins which hold flowers in place in the bouquet have replaced traditional pearl pins. Modern wedding gowns also tend to have more beadwork and less pearls.

Flowers for all seasons

Information supplied by: Sonja Judeel, Monet Flowers. Contact: 082-880-4229; www.monetflower.co.za

A SINGLE FLOWER Brides who like simplicity or who do not want to carry a heavy or full bouquet may choose a single flower. The look suits a modern wedding and an elaborate dress. Most brides select a single white lily; the rose is also a common choice. Any flower is suitable, provided it fits in with the other flowers chosen for the attendants’ bouquets and table settings. Sunflowers are making a striking comeback.

International imports and exports of cut flowers make it very easy to get the exact flowers you want at your wedding. Many flowers are seasonal and may only be available for a few weeks of the year. Florists are able to import flowers from overseas if they are not available here at a specific time, but you must be willing to pay a premium price. If you are working on a budget it is essential to know exactly what flowers are available in your wedding season. Flower prices also increase dramatically around Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day when the demand for cut flowers rises sharply.

* CONTRASTING COLOUR A single bloom in bright pink or red will stand out against a white or cream wedding gown.

Aneen - Jaco Ferreira Photography

Nicolette - Status Studio

OVER-ARM BOUQUETS

To keep bouquet costs down, florists suggest choosing the majority of blooms from those that are available all year. You can add a few flowers unique to your wedding season for a touch of exclusivity.

Flowers with long stems, like long-stemmed roses, arum lilies and orchids are grouped together and secured with ribbon. The bride cradles the bouquet against her upper body, with the blooms flowing down over her elbow. Fewer flowers are required for this type of bouquet, so it can be a more costeffective option then other bouquet types. It fits in with a modern wedding and looks very elegant with a tighter fitting wedding dress.

* TWO SIDES

SPRING – erica’s; iris; daffodils; jasmine; some proteas; tulips; strelitzias; zinnias; ranunculus; poppies; snowdrops ; arum lilies; azaleas; sweet peas; freesias; camellias.

Flowers can be secured underneath to hang over the bride’s elbow and her forearm, creating a ‘double-headed’ look with very few stems and greenery showing.

SUMMER – sunflowers; delphiniums; peonies; gladiolus; daisies; cornflowers; agapanthus; Michaelmas daisies.

* LESS IS MORE A few beautiful exotic blooms, like orchids, can be collected together and secured with ribbon for graceful, over-arm look.

The wristlet bouquet is slightly bigger than a corsage. Many brides now have a wristlet bouquet made for the reception. It allows the bride to use both her hands when greeting guests, cutting the cake and dancing but still keeps the beauty, colour and intimacy of flowers close by for the photographs.

LATE SUMMER INTO AUTUMN – some proteas; blue delphiniums; hydrangeas; Jaco Ferreira Photography

THE WRISTLET BOUQUET

South African rose growers cut down on their production during the winter as costs to heat the hot houses are high. This does not mean that you cannot have roses at your winter wedding. Tjaart Kilian, quality control manager at Multiflora, one of South Africa’s largest flower markets, says although most of the roses supplied to the market are grown locally, the company imports a large number of roses in winter to keep up with the demand. This means that roses are available in most colours all year round. Other flowers like daisies, chrysanthemums, gerberas, asters, lilium and orchids also enjoy all-year round availability.

WINTER – erica’s; iris; some proteas; tulips; amaryllis. A detailed flower list of blooms available in different seasons can be found at www.multiflora.co.za
