As we head into autumn, the wedding season slows down a little. This is a wonderful time of year to get married, not only because most venues offer a discounted rate, but because the cooler weather seems to make us enjoy the romance a little more. In this issue of Brides Essence one special couple will win a romantic 2 night stay at The Cathedral Peak Hotel in the Drakensburg. We take a look at Johan van Vuren’s photographs and share some DIY makeup tips. Also the pros and cons of different hair styles for your wedding. Remeber to save these dates 14-15th March for the Wedding Expo in Johannesburg and 22nd March for the annual Cellarbake@Nitida. If you would like to share your engagement or wedding with us, please email hello@bridesessence.com Enjoy this issue

B

rides Essence caught up with Johan van Vuren to find out more about him and showcase some of his stunning photography. Tell us about yourself. A: My name is Johan van Vuren and I am the owner and main photographer at J&N Photography, which I run with my wife Nadia. I’m very laid back and try to enjoy everything I do while making sure I do it to the absolute best of my abilities. Where are you based and what geographical area do you cover? A: I am based in Centurion and cover mostly Gauteng, but do weddings in other provinces from time to time. What made you choose photography as a profession? A: Ever since I started shooting as a hobby, I realised it was something I really loved doing and seemed to have a talent for. I did a few odd jobs here and there. I started my own photography company in 2008. This allowed me to be more creative and make a living from what I love. Did you study photography? A: Photography was one of my subjects when I studied journalism. I also have a diploma in wedding photography from Vega school. How long have you been a wedding photographer? A: I started shooting weddings in 2008, but started very slowly with one or 2 a year. I finally went full time with weddings in 2012. How many weddings do you photograph per year? A: I photograph about 10 weddings a year, I also do videography for some weddings as well. There are a few other

photographers who I shoot with for on a regular basis. So altogether I do about 2025 weddings. Are you planning on doing something different in this year’s wedding season? A: Not that I can think of. I feel I have found my style and what works for me. What do you offer in your bridal packages? A: This depends on which package a bride chooses. All my packages include an album, but the amount of pictures, album sizes and whether or not there is a second photographer varies from package to package. Do you take pre-wedding photographs? A: I do yes. Do you have any advice for Brides on how to choose the right photographer? A: Firstly, I would suggest brides make sure you get references! Let price be the last thing you look at. Photography is very personal, at the end of the day you have to make sure that you get the style and person you want. Narrow down a list of photographer’s whose work you love, and choose the one that best suits your budget. Do not just go for the cheapest one simply based on price. Are you able to match a bride’s budget? A: It depends on what her budget is. All my packages are customizable - adding or exchanging things of the same value. Unfortunately, I do not give discount as I feel my work is worth it and I have to make a living from what I do. Do you have a favourite pose for Brides? A: I do have certain poses that I like to use but I always try to put a little variation in them each time. Continued on page 7/...

What is your preferred equipment brand? A: I don’t really have one. I shoot with Nikon at the moment. What lighting equipment do you take on a shoot? A: I take 3 speedlights/flashes and radio triggers as well as stands and umbrellas How important is Photoshop in your final images? A: Very. Although my editing style is very minimalist it just helps me to do those little tweaks that makes an image pop.

HOW TO choose your wedding

hairstyle

by Stephanie Brinkerhoff

Deciding how to do my hair for my wedding was the hardest decision ever! I changed my mind every day; there were too many styles I liked! How can I choose just one? What would look good in our photographs? Which style would last all day? Whether you go with an all up hair style, half up , all down or to the side style, there are pros and cons for each hair style. I also give a few recommendations on each to help you make that very important decision.

All Down Pros: • It’s gorgeous! Especially if your hair is extra long. • It’s comfortable. You won’t have a headache by the end of the day from a million bobby pins in your hair. • It’s moveable. You won’t have to worry about it moving around because unlike an all up style, it’s supposed to move around! Cons: • T he biggest con for hair that’s all down is that it’s the least predictable wedding hair style. Since it is moveable, it’s almost impossible to keep everything in place. By the end of a long day it can look ratty and messy. It’s hard to keep volume and shape in hair that’s not pinned at all. 24

Brides Essence.com - Issue 18

My recommendation: • I f you are going to wear it all down, make sure you have time to touch it up through out the day. If you can touch it up a few times, by the end of the night it should still look great. It also helps to start a little curlier at the beginning of the day to give it some room to relax a little and still look good.

Mar/Apr 2015 Brides Essence Magazine

25

All Up Pros: • So fancy and fun! When do you ever get a chance to wear a beautiful all up style and not feel overdone? Your wedding is the perfect occasion. • There are SO many options. An “updo” can mean so many things and fit so many different styles. • It will hold it’s shape all day, making it more likely to look good in pictures. 26

Brides Essence.com - Issue 18

Cons: • Some all up styles can look boring from the front. • They can be uncomfortable, especially if you have really heavy hair. My Recommendation: • Make sure you really love your up style not only from the back and side views, but from the front too. Keep it soft and feminine around your face so it’s more interesting. It helps to leave out some soft curls to frame your face.

Half Up Pros: • You get to keep the look of long curls while still having the security of bobby pins. Best of both worlds. • It’s easier to find a place for hair accessories in half updos than in all down styles. • Since the top half is pinned up, it’s a lot more likely to hold shape and body for the whole day.

Cons: • Since half ofyour hair is still down, it can easily get messy and out of place just like an all down style My Recommendation: • If you aren’t comfortable with an all up-do, I would choose a half-up style over an all-down style. It will be more secure, hold it’s shape better and it’s an easy way to fancy up an all-down style. Mar/Apr 2015 Brides Essence Magazine

27

To the Side Pros: • If you are wearing it long and side swept, it’s just like the half updo in the sense that you get to keep the length while still having the security of bobby pins. • It will look good from the front and in pictures. Cons: • It can be uncomfortable. Most side updos are low set on the neck, and having an updo right there at the base of your neck by your ear can be annoying after a while. • In pictures, one side will look great, but the other may look boring. My recommendation: • Make sure you know which side of your hair will be facing the audience during your ceremony, and do your updo on that side. Also try to be aware of which way you are facing while your photographer takes pictures. Always try to have the side with the updo towards the camera. All photographs were taken from Steph’s Website.

The Laser Beautique by Tania Di Siena

When offered the opportunity to be a guinea pig for laser hair removal, I was excited and terribly nervous Excited because I love a freebie (who doesn’t?) and nervous because I do not relish pain. Not at all. Since it was free, I took the opportunity with both trembling hands. And I started to ask questions. I spoke with one friend, who had done IPL removal and I spoke with another who was a beautician. They agreed that yes, it would be painful. My palms started to perspire just a bit. I looked up the Laser Beautique website, which promises “pain-free laser hair removal” and also speaks of comfort like a hot stone massage. I love a hot stone massage and wiped the sweaty palms on my pants (and noticed that I hadn’t shaved my legs in a long while, sies!) Making the appointment was easy; the staff was warm and friendly. The shop itself is deceptively small, but clean and modern. Nevertheless, my palms were shining and fingers shaking. Bianca led me through to the

treatment room and ran me through the basics of The Soprano XL, a diode laser system. IPL uses a “pick and place method”, which is basically like shooting the laser onto a piece of your skin. It was described as feeling like being stung by a bee or having an elastic band snapped on your skin. I have never relished either of those experiences, but asked Bianca to let me feel it. The IPL gun was “pointed and placed” on my hand and upper lip. My eyes watered with the pain. Fortunately, the IPL experience happened after the Diode system. There was no point and shoot, no stinging bees or snapping elastic bands. With the Soprano XL, I was asked to put on a pair of designer yellow glasses (someone designed them, I doubt it was someone famous) and keep my arm up. Bianca made sure that I had shaved the night before (yes, but I missed a few hairs, apparently) and that I had no deodorant on (I didn’t and felt quite gross about it). She then put on her own pair of yellow shades to protect her eyes and turned on Mar/Apr 2015 Brides Essence Magazine

29

the machine. The basic premise of the Soprano XL is that it uses low energy, 10 pulses per second, to heat and damage the hair follicle – hence the removal feeling like a hot stone massage. The temperature will be gradually raised to a level that is comfortable to you, and the sweeping/massage motion is soothing. When I felt uncomfortable (after just over a minute of warm massage), Bianca paused the treatment, continuing only when I was ready. I only went for two sessions, about a month apart. Did I see any changes? I did. The hair under my arms took longer to grow back and was sparser than before. Would I do it again? If cost didn’t factor in, absolutely. The change I saw after two sessions was definite and I would highly recommend it to anyone who could afford it.

The Laser Beautique do offer clients who spend over R5,000 several finance packages tailored to meet your requirements.

HOW TO

create metallic smokey eyes by Stephanie Brinkerhoff I love a good metallic smokey eye. The key to a metallic smokey eye is knowing where to apply the shimmer, and where to keep it matte. If done right, it creates a really sultry look.

Step one: Apply a neutral colored base coat or primer to the lid, from the lash line clear to the brow. I am using Painterly by MAC.

Mar/Apr 2015 Brides Essence Magazine

31

Step two: Apply a shimmery color from the lash line up until you almost reach the crease, from inner corner to outer corner, covering the entire lid. I am using Satin Taupe by MAC.

TIP

If you want your eyeshadow more vibrant, mix it with a drop of water before you apply it.

32

Brides Essence.com - Issue 18

Step three: Apply a dark matte color in the crease, starting in the outer corner and fading in. I am using Carbon by MAC.

TIP

It’s important to keep the shimmer on the lid and the matte in the crease. Applying shimmer in the crease will give your eye less dimension and make it look flatter.

Mar/Apr 2015 Brides Essence Magazine

33

Step four: Apply the same shimmery color across your lower lash line, from inner corner to outer corner.

34

Brides Essence.com - Issue 18

Step five: Apply black liner in the water line from inner corner to outer corner. I am using Engraved by MAC.

Step six: Finish with black mascara.

Date of Wedding: 27 September 2014 Bride and Groom names: Sasha & Americo Dos Reis Mendes Venue: Motozi Lodge http://www.motozi.co.za/ Wedding dress: Jean Designs Hair: Chantilly Studio Photographer: Happy Snapz Cake: Mrz Marzipan What was your memorable moment on your special day? For me the most memorable moment of our amazing day was my ma walking me down the aisle to my best friend and man of my dreams. Seeing him shed a few tears while saying his vows just melted my heart, especially when he never cries, I will never forget that. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? I often hear recently married women say how their wedding day was so stressful from the time they arrived until they left. I was lucky enough to not have any stress which is why I would say take a step back and relax. Remember its all about you and him and you got to marry the man of your dreams.
