Vash and Taryn “Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”– Genesis 2:22-24

Anja Aucamp

photographer interview

B

rides Essence had the privilege of an exclusive interview with Anja Aucamp, who photographed Ryan and Vanessa (Haywood) Sandes wedding. Anja tell us about yourself. I am a barefoot farm girl who loves nature. I went to the big city when I was in Grade 6, to “Oranje Meisies” in Bloemfontein, studied at Planet Pixel, gave art classes to kids and became a Photographer. I am a very curious person who is intrigued with the way God made things and how He made each person in a unique way and from that I have learned so much!!! I have an intimate relationship with God and He romances me with His heart that I find all around in nature; in rocks, fruit, trees, clouds, flowers etc. Almost like Hansel and Gretels’ bread crumbs reminding me of His love and the way home :) I am a Pluviophile (a lover of rain). I feel sorry for the things that everybody thinks are ugly, he he. When I was little I wanted to become a Game Ranger, Opra singer, Nurse, Farmer, Artist, an Animations voice actor and my mom. So many things to be, so little time. Where did you grow up? I grew up on a farm near a small town called Molteno in the Eastern Cape; famous for it’s really cold temperatures (down to -20C) and also where the original OUMA rusks come from. Where are you based and what geographical area do you cover? I am based in Bloemfontein, in the Freestate, but love to travel and see new places so I’m open to anywhere. What made you choose photography as a profession? Well to be honest it kind of just happened. I always loved taking photo’s but never thought it would be my profession one day. While studying Art, Photography just happened to be one of the main subjects of the course, and wow I am so grateful for

that - I’ve never looked back. I did my first wedding while I was still studying with Lize-Marie Smit who was an amazing mentor and friend. She had and still has so much influence on me. Did you study photography? A:Yes I studied Arts, Graphic Design and Photography at Planet Pixel School of Advertisement, then Wedding Planning over the Internet at Trendimi and I am currently studying Jewellery at Motheo College. When did your passion in photography first begin and what do you enjoy most about it? A: One of the things I say the most is ‘Happiness is only real when shared’ and I found that with photo‘s I can do that. To share a moment that was so special with people is priceless ;a memory captured forever and being able to share that memory even with people that could not have been there or that you will perhaps only meet later in your life is amazing. For me to be part of that gift overwhelms me! What sets you apart from other photographers? For this question I thought it best to ask two of my brides :) “Anja has the ability to capture the uniqueness of each couple. She has a calming presence and a sensitivity in handling different situations to create a peaceful atmosphere for the bride and groom. This makes her much more than just the photographer at the wedding and sets her apart from other photographers! “ – Jani Du Preez “Anja is super passionate and enthusiastic about her photography! She was as excited about our wedding as we were and that was incredible! She really does go the extra mile and put so much thought into the entire process. Her photos are simply phenomenal and she has a unique talent in capturing special moments that will stay with you forever...Anja is not only one of the greatest photographers we have ever worked with (and we’ve worked with many!) but also one of the loveliest people we’ve met! “ – Vanessa (Haywood) Sandes How long have you been a wedding photographer? About 6 years. How many weddings do you photograph per year? A: Because of my studies I don’t take more than three weddings a month otherwise I can’t keep up with all the edits and I try not to take longer than 6 weeks to give the couple their photo’s. More than three weddings makes that deadline difficult.

Are you planning on doing something different in this year’s wedding season? I will finish my studies in June. And will then focus much more on my photography; so yes a few different things and dreams... so watch this space... Do you use a Mac or PC? Which do you prefer? I use PC but prefer Mac. I am currently saving up for one now... can’t wait! What do you offer in your bridal packages? Each brides’ needs are different so together we design a package that is best for their budget and what their needs are. Do you take pre-wedding photographs? Yes I do and love them. I actually think it plays such an important part in getting to know your bride & groom better.

Do you have any advice for Brides on how to choose the right photographer? 1: I know this is such a well meant gesture but brides please be really careful of friends or relatives that do photography as a hobby and offer to do your wedding photo’s as a wedding gift. I have seen many tears about this. 2: Don’t just look at a photographers top photo’s, if possible look though a whole weddings’ photos to get an over all idea; a portfolio can be deceiving. 3: Chat to the Photographer and make sure you get along and that the photographer is willing to get to know you and thus be able to capture you and your groom and who you are best on your wedding day. Are you able to match a bride’s budget? If a bride phones me we chat through all the wedding packages and options. I will then ask her what they want and then quote only for that. If the quotation is higher than their budget I will suggest things they can leave out or change to suit their budget.

Do you have a favourite pose for Brides? Not really; brides differ so much and have their own style. What is your preferred equipment brand? I use Canon and love it! But I have never used Nikon so can’t compare the two! Continued on page 11...

What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera? I will have so say my camera bag. It’s a beautiful National Geographic back pack. What lighting equipment do you take on a shoot? I love natural lighting so only use my flash and soft box at the reception How important is Photoshop in your final images? I would say it definitely plays a part. I try to take the photo as close to what I want it be to minimise editing and risk loosing the natural feel of the photo, but I use Photoshop a lot for removing skin blemishes and dark rings under the eyes (which are only a temporary effect of wedding stress).

Trevor Sorbie

hairdressing

celebrates 50 Years in

2014 saw iconic hairdresser Trevor Sorbie celebrate his 65th birthday, but there’s no plan for retirement on the horizon… The son and grandson of barbers, Sorbie was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1949, and began working with his father after leaving school at 15 with no qualifications. He worked there for 5 years, and then left to take a six-month course at the Richard Henry School of Hairdressing. In 1972 shortly after graduating, he landed a job at Vidal Sassoon in London. Here Sorbie pioneered the new geometric look sported by style icons such as Mary Quant and Mia Farrow, clients were pop stars, models and society girls. Vidal Sassoon quickly made Sorbie his Artistic Director, with clients like Rex Harrison and Paul McCartney.

Year (now in its 30th year), which he went on to win 4 times in total before withdrawing gracefully to give others a fighting chance. Trevor was also the first hairdresser to be awarded an MBE from the Queen. His investment in talent and encouragement of his protégés is demonstrated in some of the top flight names to have blossomed

Trevor currently heads 4 salons and is steadily expanding his empire with a 5th location in the pipeline; his products are known throughout the world and his artistic team is in constant demand for shoots and shows. Trevor’s own passion now focuses on his My New Hair charity, cutting wigs

for cancer patients and campaigning and educating across both the hair and medical professions. Trevor is also celebrating 50 years in the hairdressing industry this year, in June 2014 the team produced a show for the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy, as well as appearing at Expo in Australia among other projects, while Trevor himself continues to be busy with new salon openings, product launches and mynewhair.

makesa difference "In every walk of life, just occasionally an individual appears, who makes a difference, who makes a mark, who indeed changes the agendain our industry that individual is Trevor Sorbie" -Charles Worthington

THE IMAGERY… Always innovative, Trevor continually pushed the boundaries to create new styles and techniques. Here he looks back at 3 of them: THE WEDGE, 1974 By the mid-70s, London’s fashion scene was exploding. Sassoon has revolutionised women’s hairdressing by re-inventing the bob. Before that, hair had been worn up, either in bouffants or beehives, but the loose flat hair of the Sassoon era signalled a new beginning. I joined Sassoon’s and my big break came when I created a haircut, which I called

the wedge. This was the first hairdressing picture to be published as a double-page spread in Vogue magazine. Seeing my work in print was inspirational. The wedge captured the spirit of the time and was flaunted in nightclubs around the world. I now understood the power of invention. If I could achieve this once, then surely I could do it again.... THE SCRUNCH, 1979 During this period, I was a stylist at the John Freida salon. His method of finishing at that time was finger drying. It was a great technique but took ages. One day I was extremely busy; I had three clients waiting, and was under a great deal of pressure. My next client had thick, red, porous, wavy hair and, of course, she wanted it finger-dried. Because of the backlog of clients, I asked her if I could speed up the process by adding heat. I found that by taking a handful of hair, squeezing it in my hand and applying heat, then allowing the hair to cool, I could create volume. I realised that I had inadvertently discovered a new method of drying. I experimented using this technique on all types and lengths of hair. Each time, even on the finest hair, I achieved incredible results, adding volume and texture I’d never seen before. Thus, scrunch drying, perhaps my greatest invention, was born.... THE WOLFMAN, 1980 Punk was a generation of young people who were anti-establishment. Their hair was an aggressive statement of their feelings. It was a glorious celebration of youth and it inspired me because it was the opposite of everything that was happening at the time. I took my inspiration from the streets and turned it around. Instead of allowing hair to lie flat, I made it stand out. Instead of blunt cutting, I razor cut to create texture. Instead of applying colour all over, I applied it to just the ends. It was an experiment, combining all these techniques that created the Wolfman, which I presented at the World Hairdressing Congress Show at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Bridal wear for the

daring romantic

S

ince it’s creation in 2012, Australian couture bridal label Bo & Luca has revolutionised the traditional white dress. They have mesmerised women from Melbourne to London and San Francisco with their extraordinary designs and exquisite gowns, and now South African women will have a chance to experience the enchantment as Bo & Luca launches in Cape Town this December.

trueessence

“The perfect dress, should be an extension of your true essence” – Shannon Pittman Shannon Pittman travelled the world in search of an answer to the question that she could not escape: who dresses the daring romantic? For carefree women with effortless and captivating style, who is trusted to create bridal wear that reflects their unique personalities? A love affair with the Middle East in her 20s showed her a world of bespoke tailoring and immaculate beadwork from which an answer was born – Bo & Luca. Bo & Luca embodies a refreshingly freespirited approach to bridal wear. The 20

garments are defined through a fusion of flowing silk crepes and georgettes, layers of soft tulle, hand cut petals and delicately hand embroidered embellishments of beads, pearls and crystals. The quintessential Bo & Luca woman is drawn to unique, boutique style charm. “The more time I spent assisting my newly engaged friends to find unique gowns for their weddings, the more I realised there was very little on the market to reflect their own sense of style and unique personalities. “At first I started designing gowns that suited my own style aesthetic as well as that of my close friends – which largely fuses nomadic and nostalgic with a sense of freedom and movement – but as interest quickly spread to their friends too, my instinct told me there was a market and that was the beginning of Bo & Luca,” Shannon says. The Cape Town studio is set in the heart of the city – a beautiful space that, with its clean colour palette and antique trinkets, fits seamlessly into the Bo & Luca experience. The label’s ability to expand so quickly is testament to not only the immense popularity of the garments but also the appreciation for the values embodied by Bo & Luca. “We have brides from all over the world reaching out to us to find out where they can source our designs, which is humbling for any designer, but also an incredible compliment when they are choosing a Bo & Luca gown to represent them on such a beautiful and significant day in their lives.” Bo & Luca is stocked in four cities across the world and, from December 2014, South Africa’s most romantic city will be home to designs to truly fall in love with. Cape Town boasts a fashion-forward Jan/Feb 2015

market of discerning brides and is also a coveted destination for worldly wanderers in search of global couture. Shannon is now a brideto-be herself and even more understanding of the profound importance of finding a gown that expresses the incredible, spirited and unique woman within, “My gown will definitely have all the elements that suit my personality, which are the same that are patiently nurtured into every Bo & Luca design: Freedom, femininity and fluidity. “The gravity of a wedding day goes without saying. For an occasion with such incredible significance, it couldn’t be more important to be true to yourself and trust your sense of style. The dress – the perfect dress, should be an extension of your true essence,” says Shannon.

The Sandes

interview

Vanessa, Thandi and Ryan Wedding stress is felt all over, possibly more so by celebratery couples. Brides Essence had a chance to interview Ryan and Vanessa (Haywood) Sandes to find out more about them and thier wedding. How did you guys meet? A: Ryan and I met 1210 days before our wedding… :-) At the knysna oyster festival. A mutual friend, Mark Collins, introduced us. We were both there taking part in sporting activities that week and haven’t spent much time apart ever since! We also got engaged there in 2013, three years to the day when we met! So Knysna is a special place for us! 26

Brides Essence.com -

Issue 17

Vanessa, when did you realize you had a passion for cycling? A: I’ve always been sporty, since I was 4 years old in fact. A few years after I left school I was looking for a sporting activity I could take part in because I no longer had easy access to ”school sports” like netball, track athletics, hockey etc. I bought myself an entry level bike to just get going, and the rest they say “is history”! Ryan, when did you start trail running? A: I started running in 2006 and trail running the same year. I went professional in 2009.

Vanessa, if you had to choose to follow one career path what would you choose and why? A: Acting (film and television) and presenting remains my biggest passion! I love being in front of the camera whether it’s for stills or film. But if this was another life, I would love to pursue interior design or even furniture design. I may even do it one day! Ryan, where does the nickname hedgie or hedgehog come from? A: It comes from my hair – when it’s short, I look a bit like a hedgehog! When I was in school my friends started calling me that and it just stuck. It is quite an achievement to have won all 4 Desert races, Do you have other goals that you wish to achieve? A: My goal is to win the World Ultra Tour which encompases a series of races all over the world. Winning the Western States 100 miler is also at the top of my goal list! Are you competitive as a couple? A: Not with one another but we are competitive in general and in our sport very competitive. We like to give 110% at everything we set our minds to whether it’s sport or business. What do you love about each other most? A: Vanessa - What attracted me at first was his quiet, reserved demeanor. And he’s easy on the eye of course! <laughs> His drive and motivation is something that’s always intrigued me too. He’s incredibly supportive and fiercely protective which I love! Ryan - Vanessa is one of the most caring and supportive people I’ve ever met. She has a great sense of humour and always makes me laugh. So the big question: Ryan how you propose to Vanessa? Were you nervous? A: It was a rainy day / week in Knysna last year, but on the afternoon of our 3rd anniversary it miraculously cleared up. Ryan said “Lets take Thandi for a walk on the Jan/Feb 2015

beach.” And thinking nothing, off we went. Since it was our 3rd anniversary, I wasn’t suspicious at all when he stopped on the way to grab a bottle of champagne. We went for a lovely walk on the beach as the sun was making a spectacular exit, sat down on a rock sipping champagne and were chatting, when all of a sudden, he dropped down on one knee, opened up a little box, and after telling me how much he loved me, asked me to marry him! It was simply perfect! He was so shy and nervous! It was so cute! Vanessa did you suspect the engagement? A: Not at all! It was a huge surprise! What was your favourite part of being engaged? A: I guess it’s knowing that you’ve found “your person”…that the search is over and that you’ll have a “partner in crime” with you for the rest of your life. There’s an incredible sense of peace in that… Planning a wedding can be quite stressful; how did you guys cope during the planning phase? A: It was incredibly stressful at times but more enjoyable than anything else! I did most of the planning myself and even though it was tough, it was so rewarding on the day! Did you write your own vows for each other? If so what was the significance around them? A: We used a combination of both traditional vows and personally written vows. I (Vanessa) am quite an “old school” gal so I wanted to keep with some tradition but at the same time we wanted to add something intimate and personal so that’s why we wrote our own vows too. For both of you to answer: What was your favourite moment at your wedding? A: Vanessa – Smashing the Piñata! We had a big heart shaped piñata at our wedding filled with fun things like glow sticks, candy and confetti. Guests had great fun hitting it and breaking it open. Ryan and I spend a lot of time in California which has great Mexican influence and we both love Mexican food as well, so we had to include something Mexican, hence the Piñata! Ryan – Having our K9 child, Thandi as part of the wedding ceremony. She was our flower girl. Would you have done anything differently? A: The only thing we may have done differently is allowing ourselves more time for photos but otherwise everything was perfect! 28

Do you think there is more stress being a celebrity couple planning a wedding? A: I think it may be more stressful only in terms of media involved, service provider partners and also knowing that your wedding is going to be “public” and that adds a lot a stress. Keeping everybody happy and juggling it all is quite a challenge but I wouldn’t change any of it! Our service providers were out of this world and the media have all been amazing! Did you plan the wedding together or did Ryan hand you the reigns? A: I did most of the planning myself with input from Ryan here and there but we had discussed it and were more than happy with 30

the agreement! <laughs> I didn’t want too much interference! Vanessa what advice can you give other brides out there who are planning their wedding? • Choose an area you want to get married in so you can narrow things down ESPECIALLY in the Western Cape! There are 100’s of beautiful venues down here and it can get overwhelming trying to choose one. • Start planning at least 6 months in advance • Stick to your budget and always remember to make room for a contingency! Ryan any advice for the grooms? A: Just say “yes” with everything your fiancé asks… ha ha ha!

Moments: As I (Vanessa) arrived at the venue with my bridesmaids, the ceremony arch blew over and smashed into pieces! Within seconds a bunch of guys and girls whipped out some cable ties, a big hammer and nails appeared out of nowhere and the arch was put back together. My amazing wedding planner, Victoria, was so calm and just smiled at me and said “We’re just sorting something out. It’ll be a few seconds.” I only found out about the chaos after the ceremony!

Honeymoon: The honeymoon was in Mauritius and we stayed at the 5-star Dinarobin Hotel (Beachcomber Hotels) on the South West coast. It was amazing and so relaxing! The highlight was hiking up the Le Monde Blabant - it’s a world heritage site because it’s a significant site in the abolition of slavery. There is only one tour guide who is allowed to take hikes up there and we were lucky enough to join in on one of the hikes. We also enjoyed walks, snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding, mountain biking and just relaxing on the beach or at the pool. Rings: Tomas Keder designed my wedding and engagement ring – 18ct white gold Tanzanite (I wanted a uniquely African stone) and Diamond engagement ring and the wedding band is a platinum ring, channel-set with baguettecut diamonds. The tradition of doing something to signify the union of two people into one union has great significance for the bridal couple. Here are a few suggestions of ways in which you can incorporate this tradition into your wedding. Unity Candles Two individual smaller candles are lit. The bride and groom each takes one of the smaller candles and then light the bigger together. Then they blow out the smaller candles. This signifies the end of their lives as single individuals and the beginning of their lives as a couple. The choices available to bridal couples today are very extensive. It is no longer limited to two thin, plain white candles used to light one plain white larger candle. One option is to have the two smaller candles with the initial of the bride on one of the smaller candles and the groom’s initial on the other with both of their initials on the larger candle.

There is also the option to have your names printed on the two smaller candles with both of your names on the larger one. With a short verse or poem printed on beneath. The choice of colours for your ribbon and any other decorative details is endless and entirely up to you. The colours you can have printed on the candles numerous as well. You really can design something unique for your ceremony. Remember that the candles won’t burn during the ceremony for very long at all so these are a lovely keep sake and reminder of your vows to one another. Unity candles can also be used with great effect and have remarkable significance if you or your spouse are bringing children into the marriage. As shown in the picture you could have the candles for you and your spouse and then additional candles made up for your child or children. This would be a wonderful way to really allow your children to feel that they have been made a significant part of your ceremony.

Flowers: Etc Events photographer: Matt Masson Cake: Sugar Coated Cakes.co.za What was your memorable moment on your special day? My most memorable moment was walking down the isle with my father and seeing all our family and friends together and my very nervous husband to be waiting for me at the alter. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? I would have to say to try not to stress about the small things, there will be so much going on, try to get as much done as early as possible so you have those last few weeks to relax stress free and spend time with your fiancĂŠ.

I think for me my most memorable moment must be the moment my father and Marco saw me for the fist time. My dad was very emotional giving his first daughter away to a new man, and this was a very big moment for me as well. The first time I saw my husband was when I walked down the isle. With my father on my side tearing up, my fiance, at that time, tearing up. It was extremely difficult not crying my eyes out, but yet, so beautiful. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? The only advice I would like to give brides is to book professional service providers, be very specific of what you expect of them and then leave it to them to deliver. When you have booked and paid someone for a service, leave it in their hands to deliver. The last thing a service provider wants is someone checking up on them and not giving them any trust. On my wedding day I did not stress about one little detail, I

knew the people I booked could be trusted and that everything would just be as I expected. On the day everything turned out better that I could have ever imagined.

What was your memorable moment on your special day? The most memorable part was definately the flowers and decor. I would describe our wedding as a real fairy tale and elegant. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? Enjoy every moment from the when you get ready untill you walk down the aisle because that moment goes by so fast. Keep smiling, it makes the best photos.

There were so many! The first one was seeing the look on Steven’s face when I walked down the aisle; it was very emotional. The other would be our first dance; we went for a few dance lessons and it was great to be able to show everyone our moves. What advice do you have for other brides getting married? Enjoy the planning and don’t get lost in all the details. The day flashes by so quickly, so embrace each moment. Don’t stress if something doesn’t go the way you planned, just remember that everyone is there to share and celebrate your new beginning as husband and wife.
