LOMOND WHITES MADE TO LAST

Just as a solid marriage stands the test of time, so does Lomond’s award-winning white wines. Longevity is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of South Africa’s white wines, praised mostly for their youthful exuberance, their freshness and abundance of flavour. But increasingly

 Every bride dreams about perfection on the most important day of her life, and with Bouchard Finlayson Blanc de Mer 2010 on the table, the celebrated couple can be assured that they’re drinking one of South Africa’s best wines. Traditionally a great companion to any meal, this wine has a rich palate with a creamy elegance followed by hints of melon and green apple. A blend of 40% Riesling, 33% Viognier, 13% Sauvignon Blanc, 11% Chenin Blanc and 3% Chardonnay, it was previously nominated by Decanter Magazine’s Steven Spurrier as one of the best white blends in the New World.

white wines are coming on the market that while already perfectly drinkable, will only gain with the passage of time. Among these are the single-vineyard white wines sold under the Lomond label named for the wine farm in the new winegrowing area that stretches from Gansbaai down past Elim to Agulhas. Wine Maker Kobus Gerber says, “The proof is in the drinking.” “Lomond’s 2007 Pincushion Sauvignon Blanc, a single-vineyard wine, is only now, after four years, approaching its optimum, with a wonderful richness of flavours coming to the fore. Wayne Gabb, general manager and viticulturist of Lomond ascribes the longevity of the wines to the slow ripening of the grapes in the cool climate of the area as well as to wide variety of soil types on the farm. “Because of the long

Creation range comprises nine wines. The trendsetting winery was the first in the Hemel-en-Aarde region to grow and produce a Bordeaux-style blend. What’s more, Creation is the first producer in the area with a Grenache vineyard and also the first to produce a single-variety Viognier and a Semillon wine. September 2010 saw the local release of Creation’s second label, Whale Pod. Comprising Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2009 vintage rewards with waves of blackberry, whiffs of blackcurrant and the distinctive stamp of good, toasted oak. Creation’s unique Wine and Food Pairing, offering visitors the opportunity of savouring its glorious wines in the company of scrumptious, complementing canapés, has become one of the winery’s main attractions. Creation Sauvignon Blanc Pale straw yellow in colour with twinkling flashes of green is a superbly balanced wine, beckoning with aromas of tropical fruit, elegant elderflower

And now the ever-enterprising Creation team has taken the thrill of wine-matching even further to offer a brand-new experience: The Creation Wine and Éclat de Chocolat Pairing. Wine Tasting daily between 10h00 and 17h00. Sundays until 16h00.

and interesting, mineral whiffs. These follow through on the full-bodied palate where crisp, well-integrated acidity adds to the allure and leads to a lingering, memorable aftertaste. A VENUE MADE IN HEAVEN Splendidly fashioned by Nature and superbly equipped by its inspired owners, Creation offers the ideal setting for fairytale weddings. An attractive variety of flexible options are available. These range from simply hiring the venue to allinclusive packages where a professional team takes care of all details. Support Fair Trade MICHELANGELO CCL LABEL INTERNATIONAL WINE AWARDS ANNOUNCES BEST FAIRTRADE WINES On Friday 9 September 2011, the winners of the two Fairtrade trophies were announced at the Michelangelo CCL Label International Wine Awards (MIWA) ceremony at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. The Best Fairtrade Red goes to Stellenrust Timeless Red Blend 2008, and the Best Fairtrade white goes to Bosman Family Vineyards’ Sur Lie Chenin Blanc 2011. In addition, the Fairtrade Palesa Sauvignon Blanc 2011 (marketed by the uniWines Group) won a Gold Medal. Sponsored by Pick n Pay, the two Fairtrade trophies were introduced to this year’s line‐up of the MIWA for the first time. Boudewijn Goossens Executive Director of Fairtrade Label South Africa (FLSA), comments, “We expect to continue our partnership with the MIWA organizers in the future and continue reward Fairtrade wineries for their amazing work in making excellent wines that adhere to the highest social and environmental standards”. The MIWA started in 1997 as an annual South African wine competition with an international panel of judges. The 15 judges appointed for this year’s competition tasted 1385 wines supplied by 226 producers and selected 35 wines for the Grand D’Or medal, 179 for the gold, and 261 for the silver. In addition to the medals, twelve trophies were awarded, two of which are dedicated to Fairtrade wines. “The Pick n Pay trophies for the best Fairtrade Red and Fairtrade White have been created to encourage the participation of Fairtrade-endorsed wines and by implication to encourage producers to become part of the Fairtrade initiative” says Lorraine Immelman President of the MIWA. Wine is one of the biggest Fairtrade product categories in South Africa with almost forty businesses involved in Fairtrade winemaking and certified accordingly. Currently, over 15 sell their Fairtrade labeled wines in the local market. In 2010, Fairtrade wines accounted for over half of the estimated sales of Fairtrade in South Africa, which soared to R18.4 million up from the R5. 7 million in 2009. Celebrity Advice… for Brides – How to get into shape before their special day! By Fiona Nay Getting married is something special and not just a memory that will last forever. Not everyone has the opportunity to meet their life partner and spend the rest of their lives together, ‘Through thick and thin’. So when you have that day that will change the rest of your lives together it has to be perfect. You have to be ready and prepared mind, body and soul for the BIG DAY. Your mind can be prepared by making sure you have enough time to plan the wedding. Get a wedding planner to take half the stress away, make sure everything is thought out and prepared on time. The most important thing for a woman, and I’m sure all woman will agree when I say you want to look like an angel, nothing must be out of place like your hair, makeup and most importantly your dress. You want to look like an hour glass in that dress for your fairy tale wedding This is where I come in…” I am a Qualified Personal trainer, group instructor (Pilates, step class, aerobics tae-bo ...etc). I was a Fitness Director overseas. I have trained celebrities and I am a runner and Brand Ambassador for Environ.” This article supplies you with the basic knowledge of toning up and looking and feeling a billion times better. Okay, realistically you need to plan 6 months to a year before you get married. First important thing to remember is that diets don’t work and that there is no quick fix. The quicker you get weight off the faster its comes back. Nutrition is probably more important than exercise.

http://www.wealthwise.co.za

 

You need to balance out your food by eating 5-6 small meals a day each 3-4 hours apart. Make sure you have eaten a small meal/snack 3040 minutes before your exercise to maintain your sugar balance. Don’t starve yourself as it slows down your metabolism, the faster your metabolism the faster you lose the weight

Make sure you are constantly hydrated drinking water all the time, if your weight is 60kg then you would need 5-6 glasses of water a day and so forth. Take in to consideration how much caffeine you drink as well. Exercise is important but it depends on the individual; whether you have never exercised a day in your life or if you follow an exercise the program it will depend on your individual fitness. For future brides that want to start exercising: Most important, do check with your Doctor if you are medically fit and have no injuries. A. First month start slow 20- 30 minutes per day B. 2-3 times a week. C. Getting 10-15 minutes of Cardio (Running , cycling, walking, swimming) D. Jumping jacks and squats are a must (30/40 of each) E. Get some weight training in – bicep curls, triceps dips. F. Pushups, (2 sets of 20) G. Everyone’s favourite STOMACH! (crunches, side oblique’s, superman,(2 sets of 20) H. STRETCH, STRETCH, STRETCH as it prevents most of the stiffness the following day. If you do feel mild stiffness its normal, don’t stop exercising it will get easier. I. If at any time while you are training you have consistent pain stop immediately. Go to GP for a checkup. If you are training at a gym and battling to motivate yourself, join an aerobics or tae-bo class. Pilates is excellent on the core which makes your whole body stronger. After the first month you should add another set on the weight training and another 8 -10 minutes to your cardio. From there after every 4 – 6 weeks you can increase intensity and speed. Doing what you love and enjoying doing it will make the exercise FUN and Easy. Don’t obsess with the scale, weigh yourself every 3 -4 weeks. Keep a positive attitude and work hard on your body it’s your special day and you deserve it. Good Luck. Fiona Nay Email: mailto:fiona.nay@hotmail.com

FINANCIAL ADVICE… “FOR BETTER OR WORSE, IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH, FOR RICHER AND POORER…

The second and more common scenario today is to be married “Out of Community of Property” which is instituted by entering into an antenuptial contract. This is usually decided upon and signed before you get married and hence why we often hear Hollywood speak of a “prenup”.

BY SHAUN LATTER

As you prepare for the exciting day that you exchange your nuptials, you anticipate the enormity of the promises you are about to make to each other. However, seldom is there sufficient regard given to how these commitments bind certain legal and financial obligations upon one another in the eyes of the law, banks and of course, SARS. The extent to which this obligation is measured is contained in the Marital Property regime under which you fall and is influenced, primarily, by whether you have an ante-nuptial agreement in place or not. So, in the eyes of the law (Matrimonial Property Act to be precise) you can be married in two ways: 1)

Married “In community of Property” (ICOP) 2) Married “Out of Community of Property” (also known as “ANC”) Let’s deal with “In Community of Property” first. If no ante nuptial contract is entered into, a marriage will automatically be regarded as ICOP. In this instance, all assets of the spouses as they exist on date of marriage are joined in one ‘community estate’ with each spouse having an equal 50% claim thereon. Any assets accumulated by either party thereafter become part of the community and shared accordingly. Similarly, any debt accumulated is the responsibility of both parties (love me, love my debt!). For this reason, the Act requires joint administration of the community estate where neither party may act on any significant financial transaction without the others spouse’s written consent. The only exception to where assets will be excluded from the community and accrue solely to one of the spouses is in the instance of gifts or inheritances and only where it has been explicitly excluded by the donor (person giving the gift). A common example of this is where a spouse may receive an inheritance as part of a deceased parent’s estate where an exclusion clause was included in the last will and testament of the parent.

By entering into this type of agreement, each party has the opportunity to decide whether to exclude assets already accumulated prior to marriage, or not. Similarly, it can be decided upon as to whether assets accumulated during your marriage will be included (ANC – with accrual), or not (ANC – without accrual). This is measured by what is known as the “accrual system” whereby each spouse will conduct their estate independently of one another. In the event of death or divorce (terrible to think about, I know) the spouse showing the smaller accrual (growth) since the inception of the marriage, will have a claim equal to half the difference. The best way to understand it is by way of a few examples. Let’s assume James and Mary are to wed. James is a successful CA and Mary is completing her community service after which she plans to open a practice as a General Practitioner. James has assets to the value of R500 000 and Mary has R250 000. These figures become the “base cost” for the accrual calculation. Let’s assume that 10 years from now, one of the spouses pass away and at that time both spouses have increased their asset worth to R800 000 and R600 000 respectively. In other words, James’ assets have increased by R300 000 and Mary’s by R350 000. Because Mary’s was a larger increase (by R50 000), James has a claim to half of that amount (R25 000) so both of their estates will reflect a growth of R325 000 during their marriage.

This is a simplistic example and other factors such as inflation, excluded assets etc will be brought in, however, the principal is easy – everything you accrue during your marriage is shared equally. This type of antenuptial contract is known as “ANC – with accrual”. Remember, one has the option of entering into the contract with a “nil base” at marriage regardless of assets held at marriage. This is popular amongst couples that have been living and accumulating assets together long before tying the knot. If we were to apply this to James and Mary, the result would be somewhat different with James having R800 000 and Mary with R600 000, the claim would now be on James where his estate would pay Mary’s R100 000 (half of the R200 000 difference). Of course, James and Mary may concur that because they are both professionals looking to expand their respective careers, they may opt for a contract where no joint accumulation is shared and “what’s yours - is yours and what’s mine - is mine!” This is known as “ANC – without accrual” The above outlines the broad differences between the various options available to you. Regardless of which route you ultimately decide on, it would be prudent to engage with a suitable lawyer to fully understand the specific consequences (both good and bad as well as legal and financial) that would relate to your particular circumstances. It may be somewhat of a mundane and even morbid ingredient to a marriage of financial harmony.
