LUXEMBOURG PAVILION

L’exposition « Modernity - loved, hated or ignored ? » s’inscrit dans la thématique de la 14 ème édition de la Biennale, dirigée par l’architecte néerlandais Rem Koolhaas et intitulée « Fundamentals ». Son objectif était de mettre en place un véritable projet « d’expositionrecherche ». Pour favoriser la cohérence entre les contributions des pavillons nationaux, Koolhaas a donc introduit un sujet commun : « Absorbing Modernity - 1914-2014 ». Chaque pays a été invité à examiner ses cent dernières années d’architecture en plaçant ses propres accents et en déÄnissant une approche originale. Le résultat consiste à raconter l’histoire de l’impact de la « modernité » d’une manière qui aide à appréhender la situation actuelle. C’est à une équipe interdisciplinaire composée par l’architecte Stéphanie Laruade, le photographe Bohumil Kostohryz et la metteure en scène et comédienne Sophie Langevin que la Fondation de l’Architecture et de l’Ingénierie au Luxembourg – mandatée pour la 6ème fois par le Ministère de la Culture pour organiser la contribution luxembourgeoise à la Biennale d’Architecture de Venise – a conÄé en juillet 2013 la conception et la production de cette exposition suite à un appel à projets international.

The exhibition “Modernity - loved, hated or ignored?” responds to the general theme of the 14th Biennale edition, directed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and entitled “Fundamentals”. His aim was to create a real research-exhibition. Thus, to encourage coherence between the contributions of the national pavilions, Koolhaas introduced the speciÄc, common topic of “Absorbing Modernity - 1914-2014”. Each country was invited to study its’ last hundred years of architecture by choosing its’ own accents and deÄning its’ own original approach to the subject. The result of this is a collective story telling about the impact of “modernity”, supposed to help understanding the current situation. The conception and production of this exhibition was trusted to a multidisciplinary collective based in Luxembourg, made up of the architect Stéphanie Laruade, the photographer Bohumil Kostohryz, the director and actor Sophie Langevin in July 2013. Their designation as curators of the exhibition was the result of an international call for projects launched by the Luxembourg Foundation for Architecture and Engineering, charged as in the previous years by the Ministry of Culture to act as commissioner for this sixth national participation in the Venice Architecture Biennale.


Comment la modernité s’est-elle imposée dans notre quotidien ? Quel regard portons-nous sur les bâtiments que nous côtoyons chaque jour ? Rejet, appropriation ou indifférence ? How has modernity come to dominate everyday experience? How do we view the buildings that we pass every day? Do we reject them or embrace them? Or are we merely indifferent to them?


A la manière de l’agent Dale Cooper débarquant en terre inconnue dans la petite ville frontalière de Twin Peaks dans la célèbre série de David Lynch, Jane Doe arrive à Luxembourg. Cinq enquêtes l’attendent. Toutes poursuivent le même objectif : retracer le chemin sinueux emprunté par les hommes dans leur insatiable quête de modernité. Ces parcours dans le temps et dans l’espace croisent progrès et résistance, ouverture et repli.

Like special agent Dale Cooper arriving in unknown territory in the small border town of Twin Peaks in the famous TV series by David Lynch, Jane Doe arrives in Luxembourg, where Äve investigations await her. Each investigation has the same goal, that of retracing the meandering path followed by human beings in their insatiable quest for modernity. This journey through space and time is an encounter with progress and resistance, openness and withdrawal.


L’aventure commence par la recherche de la première maison moderne du Luxembourg. A l’issue de l’enquête un épais dossier est dévoilé. Il contient, pêle-mêle : Une masse de documents hétéroclites ; lettres, anciens plans, photographies..., 120 Äches contenant chacune des bribes d’informations tapées à la machine, 5 images énigmatiques. Un à un les documents se relient…

La route se poursuit dans le sud du Pays, où une enquête de voisinage révèle une masse de souvenirs. Ils racontent l’enthousiasme et la nostalgie d’un quartier à travers la construction d’une chapelle et dévoilent la dimension humaine de la modernité.

The adventure starts by researching into the Ärst modern house in Luxembourg. At the outcome of the enquiry a thick Äle is revealed. It contains, at random: A mass of various documents: letters, old plans, photographs…., 120 forms each containing typed snippets of information, 5 mysterious pictures. One by one the documents are linked…

The path continues in the south of Luxembourg, where a neighbourhood survey reawakens a mass of memories. They describe the enthusiasm and nostalgia in the neighbourhood when the community was involved in the construction of a chapel. This reveals the human dimension of modernity.


L’architecture se trouve au centre, elle est le cœur de l’investigation, le théâtre des évènements. A partir d’elle se déchaînent les passions et se nouent les intrigues.

Architecture is at the centre of all this, it is the heart of the investigation and the theatre of events. It is the starting point that triggers passions and the weaving of intrigues.

Un métronome rythme le parcours, la ville déÄle, insaisissable. Tels des instantanés, les bâtiments se superposent les uns aux autres dans un Åux continu. Avant même d´être absorbé un nouveau fragment tombe et le remplace.

A metronome marks the passage of time, the town marches past, elusive. Like snapshots, the buildings overlap in an unending Åux. Before being absorbed, a new fragment falls and is replaced.


Finally, two emblematic projects from the 1960s plunge the investigation into the depth of the archives. The history of the plots, the competitions, the rejected projects, the utopias of a time, the difÄculties encountered on the construction site, the ofÄcial inauguration, the miscellaneous news items, the joys and sorrows, resurface.

EnÄn, deux projets emblématiques des années 60 plongent l’enquête dans la profondeur des archives. L’histoire du terrain, les concours, les projets non retenus, les utopies d’un temps, les difÄcultés rencontrées sur le chantier, l’inauguration ofÄcielle, les faits divers, les joies, les peines refont surface. L’examen de ces archives, ces « activités, sourdes et en même temps bavardes des choses dites à travers une culture » décrites par Michel Foucault révèlent la tension qui a accompagné les hommes dans leur quête de modernité. En contrepoint à l’amnésie contemporaine, l’objectif est de faire ressurgir, par le biais des articles de presse, des témoignages, des documents oubliés au fond des archives, les évènements qui ont construit la mémoire des lieux.

The study of these archives, these “silent yet eloquent activities of things expressed through a culture” described by Michel Foucault reveal the tension that always goes hand in hand with the quest for modernity. In contrast with contemporary amnesia, the goal is to resurrect events that formed the memory of a place by means of press reports, personal accounts and documents retrieved from archives.


Ces éléments sont retranscrits dans le journal. A l’issue de l’enquête, le journal se dénoue, ses pages s’éparpillent telles les pièces d’un puzzle géant. L’enjeu est alors d’organiser cette substance et de reconstruire l’histoire sous un nouveau jour. De lien en lien, l’enquête se dessine. Ces murs, composés sur le principe des mindmapping offrent aux visiteurs l’occasion de se perdre dans leur propre histoire de la modernité.

These elements are transcribed in the journal. At the end of the investigation the journal unravels itself, its pages scatter, like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The challenge is to organise this material and to reconstruct the story under a different light. The investigation takes shape from link to link. These walls, constructed on the principle of mind-mapping, offer to the visitors the opportunity to lose themselves in their own story of modernity.

A THOUGHT FOR THE „CAPUCINS ” „...It replaces the revered room in rue des Capucins, to which we nevertheless owe some affection. It had been opened on 15 February 1869 in the presence of Prince Henri and Princess Amélie following bitter controversy over the designation of the disused church of the convent of the Capucins friars.” Speech by Pierre Werner on the occasion of the inauguration of the Grand-Théâtre.

THE GROUND BEHIND THE PESCATORE FOUNDATION.


EXCHANGE Sale on 29 March, 1940 The state has agreed to give the town, in part-exchange, the land behind the J.-P. Pescatore institution and which was originally intended for the building of the new secondary school.


NEW SITE FOR THE SECONDARY SCHOOL „The acquisition by the state had been motivated by the plan to build the new secondary school, for which the various construction proposals had so roused pre-war public opinion. The increase in the numbers of pupils and modern ideas regarding the building of schools led the Government in the mid-¿fties to ¿nd another site for the secondary school.” Speech by Pierre Werner at the inauguration of the „Grand Théâtre”.

PERFECT ORGANISATION An event organised in the highceilinged and bright village hall in Bonnevoie, late afternoon on Friday. The public were invited to sample a delicate delicious local wine and tasty sandwiches that the kind, likeable caretaker of the town hall took it upon himself to serve to the guests extremely well.

DEPARTURE Thursday 10 November 2013 The name of Monsieur Alain Bourbonnais makes you think of an amazing place called „La Fabuloserie”. I read from the website that it would refer to the architect’s country home in Burgundy, a house he allegedly transformed into a temple of Art Brut with the help of his wife Caroline. Coincidence, I will cross Burgundy the next day.

MEETING Friday 11 November 2013 Armistice Day. Journey via Dicy, on the edge of Burgundy. Finding „La Fabuloserie” and meeting with Caroline Bourbonnais, wife of the architect Alain Bourbonnais.

JOSEPH LEYDENBACH’S VILLA Alain Bourbonnais stayed for two years in Luxembourg. Monsieur Leydenbach, president of the International Bank in Luxembourg, contacted him to build his villa.


NINI Caroline and Alain never returned to Luxembourg after their hurried departure in the autumn of 62. They did not see the ¿nished theatre, only a few kindly glimpses from a mysterious Nini allowed them to believe in the project’s success.

CONFLICT WITH THE PROJECT TEAM

LUXEMBOURG, AUTUMN 62 The tension between the working group and the architect had reached its breaking point. The situation had become untenable. On the evening before 1 November, Alain Bourbonnais, Caroline and their associates loaded all the plans for the completion of the „Grand Théâtre” project into the boot of their car.

At nightfall they fled Luxembourg. Caroline describes to me, still trembling, crossing the border, butterÀies in her stomach, and also the great “beanfeast” that ensued early in the morning on arrival in Paris.


„The secretary... asked in the entrance foyer for some coffers with gilded mouldings in the entrance foyer: Poor man!... So the arguments came back ¿ercer and ¿ercer and I was taken over by suggestions from engineers, they wanted to cover three sides of the pillars with marble and one side with mirrors so that the ladies could gaze at themselves. All that, in my view,

has no place in a modern building.” A. Bourbonnais

SATURDAY 3 NOVEMBER 1962 8:00 The mail contains a letter from Bourbonnais dated 31 October 1962, terminating the contract as an architect and giving notice of the closure of the Luxembourg Agency from 1 November 1962.

12:00 Messieurs S., B. and R. go to the local Bourbonnais ofÂżce to see it closed.

SUNDAY 4 DECEMBER 1962 18:00 Discussions on the measures needed

20:00 Messieurs S and B return to the agency and contact an associate of the architect, Monsieur M. who lives in this house with his family. The result of the following interview shows that Monsieur Bourbonnais has emptied the premises during the days off and has taken all the plans, documents and models, partly in his private car, partly in a van with a French number plate. The result of information gleaned later shows that this van was left at Longwy.
