LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Eric Lucas, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture Throughout the Activity Guide, you will find activities, programs, and events that reflect our department mission, which is to “impact lives and build community pride.” We strive to accomplish our mission by offering something for everyone. Whether it is a stroll on one of our numerous parks or trails, an adventure on the new Main Park playground, a visit to our Art & Heritage Center, or a day spent in the Community Recreation Center, I hope you will find something that engages and challenges you to live a healthier, more rounded life. As we head into 2019, our department is energized and looking forward to continuing to meet the challenges of our growing, vibrant community. This means the addition of two new neighborhood parks (Village East and Windshire), and new and improved programs, events, and facilities that will continue to enhance the quality of life of Windsor residents and visitors. As always, if you have ideas, concerns, or would just like to chat, please feel free to reach out. I would love to hear what you have to say regarding parks, recreation, and culture here in Windsor! Have fun out there!

BUILD! TOY BRICK EXHIBIT Summer 2019

‘Tycoon vs. Cartoon’ January 4 – March 27

Mini Exhibits at the Community Recreation Center Location: East Hallway, Windsor CRC Age: All Cost: Free to see the exhibit Regular Hours: Mondays – Fridays, 5 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Saturdays, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Sundays, Noon – 6 p.m.

‘A Peek into the Past’ September 12 – January 3 Come and see what Windsor was like in years past through a collection of historic photographs from the Town of Windsor Museums’ permanent collection. Construction of the Great Western Sugar Factory, snow storms, and early Main Street are only some of the historic perspectives you’ll see.

A collection of cartoons by America’s first political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, will make a visit to Windsor. Nast is best known for his invention and development of symbols, like the Republican Elephant, Democratic Donkey, and a goatee-wearing Uncle Sam. During the presidential election of 1872, Horace Greeley and Ulysses S. Grant went head to head. Nast’s support of Grant and critical illustrations of Greeley influenced many Americans. Ulysses S. Grant won the presidency, leaving Horace Greeley “crushed by the unmerciful ridicule Nast had heaped on him.”

‘People and Places of the Past’ March 29 – June 21 Did you know that Windsor was the hometown of a famous opera singer? Do you know the history behind some of Windsor’s most prominent buildings and events that happened there? Visit this mini exhibit to dive into Windsor’s little known history.

Art & Heritage Center The Art & Heritage Center (AHC) is a hub for the arts, culture, and history in Windsor. The AHC hosts a number of exhibits and programs throughout the year, and aspires to increase cultural opportunities for the Windsor community. Visit our website to learn more about the programs, tours, and exhibitions offered by the Culture Division at windsorgov.com/culture.

Colorado Capitol Building Tour (Denver) Did you know the capitol building is made from Colorado rose onyx (also known as Beulah red marble), a type of stone so rare that all known reserves were used in the capitol’s construction? The Colorado rose onyx itself was quarried in the town of Beulah, Colo. And did you know the capitol’s original signature dome was made of copper, but was swapped out for gold in 1908 due to the copper’s tendency to oxidize, creating a dull patina cover? The dome was plated with 200 ounces of glistening 24-karat gold leaf to commemorate Colorado’s Gold Rush and the brave pioneers and miners who helped build Colorado. Three reapplications of Colorado gold leaf occurred between 1908 and 1980 — the most recent golden shine now comes from 65 ounces of .999 pure gold that was mined in Colorado, hammered into gold leaf in Florence, Italy, and applied in 2013. Learn about the history and construction of the Colorado Capitol Building. Join us on this tour and learn more great facts about our state’s capitol building and see our lawmakers hard at work. Zoo (Denver) Join us on a Denver Zoo safari and see why the Denver Zoo is considered a leader among its peers in design and planning for the future. The Denver Zoo Millennium Master Plan oversaw the development of Primate Panorama with two phases, one in 1996 and one in 2002, a new main entrance welcoming guests immediately to the award-winning Predator Ridge in 2004, and Toyota Elephant Passage in 2012. These improvements to the Denver Zoo have affirmed its place as a leader in exhibit design and visitor experience. The rotational exhibit concept introduced in Predator Ridge has been mimicked in exhibits all over the world, and

was improved upon for Toyota Elephant Passage. This concept allows different species to be seen in the exhibits at different times by rotating animals through multiple habitats. Fitness Myofascial Release Workshop

Special Courses Foam Roller Workshop Do you have a foam roller or have you seen them here at the Recreation Center? Sure, you roll your quadriceps and IT bands, but the options with a roller are so much more than that. Would you like to learn how to use one to help ease your aches and pains? A foam roller can sometimes get into places you just can’t stretch on your own. Yoga and fitness teacher Julia Lynne will spend an hour showing you the ins, the outs, and the ouches to the benefits of the roller in this hands-on workshop. Location: Willow Room, Windsor CRC Age: 12+ Registration Deadline: Until full

When paired with a yoga practice, myofascial release is very effective in releasing muscular tension and soreness, increasing range of motion, and working with scar tissue. This two-hour workshop begins with an overview of the function and role of fascia. You will learn the goals of myofascial release and what to avoid. Then, using a few props — tennis balls, yoga blocks, and blankets — we will dive into specific instruction for the whole body: feet, legs, hips, neck, and shoulders. Flag Football Flag Football The Windsor Flag Football league’s focus is to teach fundamentals of football in a team setting. Each age group will be split into two different divisions of Draft or Open (if overall registration numbers allow). In both divisions, participants will learn football fundamentals with the exception of tackling or blocking (non-contact league) with an emphasis of equal participation and winning being secondary. Teams play 5 vs. 5 and are scheduled for six games with an end-of-season playoff if scheduling constraints permit. Draft Division Players attend an assessment date. Players will be assessed on basic football skills and athleticism, and will be placed on teams according to skill level and grade with team parity as the main goal. No requests can be made for practice location, practice day/time, or a specific coach. Teams are selected by the coaches with a player draft after the assessment.

64

Open Division The Open Division is made up of teams with kids who want to play together as a team. To register for this division it is highly recommend you have already been contacted by a coach prior to registration. Players in this league do not go through the assessment process. Individual players registered in the Open Division and not assigned to a team will be moved to the Draft Division. Coaches Wanted This program relies on parent volunteers to coach. It’s sad when kids miss out on the action because of a coaching shortage. Please contact us if you are willing to coach. Coaches pick their own practice schedule that accommodates their schedules. Call 970-674-3515 for more information. Draft Division Assessments Draft Division teams are formed through the player assessment process in an effort to create balanced teams. Players and coaches in the Draft Division should attend the assessment day to be assigned to a team. Assessments will be held at Chimney Park at 5:30 p.m. on the following dates: • Grade K - 1: Monday, March 11 • Grade 2 - 3: Tuesday, March 12 • Grades 4 - 5 and 6 - 8: Wednesday, March 13 Requests Draft Division coaches select their team through the assessment process; therefore, requests cannot be guaranteed for a child to be placed on a specific team, with a specific coach, on a specific practice day, or with another player. If you need a specific request, become a coach and enter your team in the Open Division. Practices Practices begin the week of March 18, one hour each, two times per week. After assessments, a coach will contact you with your practice schedule. Practices can occur between 4:30 - 7 p.m. Monday through Friday at the coach’s discretion.

Ready, set, snow Associates in Family Medicine is warming up for winter! The weather outside might be frightful, but don’t let the cold freeze you in your tracks. Get out and take in the wonders of winter – from snowball fights and sledding to hitting those awesome Colorado slopes.
