LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Eric Lucas, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture With daylight extending later each day, it is a telltale sign that spring and summer are here, which means there are a lot of fantastic programs, events, parks, and trails included in this guide just waiting on your participation! Additionally, with the warmer weather we anticipate the opening of two new neighborhood parks (Windshire and Village East), as well as the renovation of the Creamery into a makerspace, a new shelter at Main Park, and nearly a mile of new trail connecting CR 13 at Hwy 392 to Larimer County at River Bluffs and the Poudre Trail. Needless to say, we have a lot going on as we continue to strive to meet your recreation needs. Lastly, we are undertaking a department strategic plan that includes a needs assessment survey. This plan will identify and map out the future of our parks, trails, open space, and recreation needs. This requires strong community outreach, and I hope that when this occurs you are eager to participate and let us know what you would like to see in regard to the Eric Lucas, M.S., CPRP future of parks, recreation, and culture in Windsor!

Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture elucas@windsorgov.com

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I hope to see you out and about this summer!

Zoo (Denver) Join us on a Denver Zoo safari and see why the Denver Zoo is considered a leader among its peers in design and planning for the future. The Denver Zoo Millennium Master Plan oversaw the development of Primate Panorama with two phases, one in 1996 and one in 2002, a new main entrance welcoming guests immediately to the award-winning Predator Ridge in 2004, and Toyota Elephant Passage in 2012. These improvements to the Denver Zoo have affirmed its place as a leader in exhibit design and visitor experience. The rotational exhibit concept introduced in Predator Ridge has been mimicked in exhibits all over the world, and was improved upon for Toyota Elephant Passage. This concept allows different species to be seen in the exhibits at different times by rotating animals through multiple habitats. This stimulates their minds, expands their experiences, and provides important exercise opportunities. Walking Level: Moderate Registration Deadline: Friday prior Th

‘Wicked’ at the Buell Theatre (Denver)

Denver History Tours Presents: Lariat Loop Byway (Golden)

“Wicked,” the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz … but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin — smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships … until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, “Wicked” — the untold true story of the Witches of Oz —transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story that USA Today cheers is, “a complete triumph. An original musical that will make you laugh, cry, and think.” You will arrive in Denver, before the show, with enough time to enjoy dinner on your own.

The Lariat Loop® Byway is a 40-mile route where you can retrace the motoring adventures of the early 1920s and experience the thrill of foothills exploration at the dawn of the Age of Motorcars. Colorado’s first gateways to the mountains still have sharp curves, winding roads, spectacular views, and waysides to refresh and delight the traveler. This byway is a combination of two historic routes: the Lariat Trail Scenic Mountain Drive ascending Lookout Mountain and the Bear Creek Canyon Scenic Mountain Drive. In combination, these routes were part of several of the “scenic circles” developed and promoted by Denver in 1915 – 1920s to help Coloradans experience the mountains in proximity to the Denver Metropolitan area. Denver History Tours will provide a narrated history bus tour of Lariat Loop and will include rest stops and a lunch stop along the way (lunch on your own).

Georgetown Loop Railroad (Georgetown) The Georgetown Loop Railroad® was one of Colorado’s first visitor attractions. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time. In 1973, the Colorado Historical Society began restoring the railroad and the 978-acre Georgetown Loop Historic Mining and Railroad Park. On this tour, not only will you ride the historic narrow gauge loop railroad, but you will also take a walking tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine, located at the halfway point on the railroad. The mine

tour takes you 500 feet into a tunnel bored in the 1870s. Your guide will point out rich veins of silver and tell you about early-day mining. The temperature inside the mine is a constant 44° F, so bring a jacket. The tour also includes visits to the manager’s office and the miners’ change room. NOTE: the mine tour requires walking a very long distance on uneven surfaces and with low headroom. The driver will plan a quick stop for a late lunch, on your own, on the return ride home. Estes Park Museum (Estes Park) The Estes Park Museum presents exhibits and programs detailing the history of the area with multiple exhibits and historical buildings. Step outside of the main building to explore two historical structures: the 1908 Cobb-Macdonald cabin and the Historic Boyd Building. The cabin is typical of a turn-of-the-20th-century rustic home and displays modest furniture and decorations. The Historic Boyd Building served as the headquarters for Rocky Mountain National Park when it was located downtown from 1915 to 1923. Today, the building hosts temporary exhibits. The final stop in the tour will be to the Fall River Hydro Plant. Constructed in 1909 to produce electricity for the Stanley Hotel and surrounding areas, F. O. Stanley sold the plant to the Public Service Company of Colorado in 1928. In 1945, the Town of Estes Park purchased and maintained the Hydro Plant until it was severely damaged in 1982 by the Lawn Lake Flood. The Historic Fall River Hydro Plant was restored and opened to the public and features original equipment installed by Stanley, machinery from an addition in 1921, and a diesel unit installed by the Public Service Company in 1938.

Interpretive panels document the growth of Estes Park, its insatiable need for electricity, and the Lawn Lake Flood disaster. The driver will plan a stop for lunch, on your own, before heading home. Walking Level: Moderate Registration Deadline: Friday prior Th

Swim Team

World’s Largest Swim Lesson The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™, created by the World Waterpark Association in 2010, is a global public relations event supported by aquatic facilities, waterparks, pools, swim schools, and YMCA’s, among others. The WLSL event serves as a platform to help the global aquatics industry work together to build awareness about the fundamental importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning. Swimming is a life-saving skill for children and a vital tool to prevent drowning, the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for US children ages 1 to 14. The 2019 World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ will take place on Thursday, June 20. This will be the tenth year for the global event, and WLSL will continue with its goal of reaching more than 1 billion with the message Swimming Lesson Save Lives™. Local WLSL events will take place at hundreds of locations in more than 20 countries on five continents over the course of 24 hours. A parent / guardian release is required. Fencing Fencing is the modern Olympic sport of fighting with swords. Bouts are intense, fast, safe, and fun. It is a great workout with the mental challenge of tricking the opponent. Victories are determined not only by size, strength, and speed, but more often by creative thinking, determination, and skill. This class will provide you with the basic skills and knowledge of the sport — including footwork, bladework, and the fundamental rules of play, as well as time to try the skills you’ve learned in bouts with others. Equipment and protective clothing (epees, jackets, plastrons, gloves, and masks) are provided for use during the class. Where Do You Want to Go? In 2019, the Town of Windsor will develop a Transportation Master Plan, which will combine our Pedestrian and Motorized Transportation plans into one document. Look for opportunities to help us develop your transportation plan in 2019: tell us where you want trails, better crossings, safer routes to school, more bike lanes — tell us what you want! You will have opportunities to provide feedback on our website and at town events throughout the summer.

The Rec Mobile brings the offerings and benefits of the Windsor Community Recreation Center right to your neighborhood. This program may be seen at community events, parks, fairs, and festivals, which are free and open to the public. The primary goal is to introduce youth to recreational activities that are fun and challenging, and encourage them to get out and play! Keep an eye out for the Rec Mobile in your local park this summer, June 6 to August 9.

Dance & Cheer Cheer and Tumbling Competitive Cheerleading: Wildfires Prep and All Star Wildfires is a competitive cheer program for athletes looking to take their skills to the next level. Athletes focus on elite competitive routines that include dance, stunts, and tumbling set to energetic and fast-paced music. Wildfires has proven success with high coach-to athlete ratios, highly qualified coaches, and affordability for families. We accept athletes ages 5 - 18 years old. Both Prep and All Star Teams are formed at tryouts and are based on skill and age. Summer Prep Competition Teams For athletes who are new to competitive cheerleading, are dual athletes, or are looking for a lower time commitment than year-round All Star Cheer Teams, this is a great opportunity to gain firsthand skill and knowledge of the sport in a competitive atmosphere. Summer Prep Season will run May through August and will end with a fun competition at Elitch Gardens on September 7. After Summer Prep Season, athletes will be invited to continue on the Fall Prep Team or advance to the Year-Round All Star team depending on skill. However, there will be no obligation to continue past September. Tryouts will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. April 24 - 26. Time Commitment: Three hours per week divided into two days. Year-round All Star Teams For athletes who choose to make cheerleading their primary sport, All Star Teams provide an excellent opportunity to grow competitive skills year-round. Wildfires All Star Cheerleading has proven success in building teams that are proven athletes at competition, bonded teammates in and out of practice, and leaders in the community. The season runs May through March, and we strive to offer athletes balance throughout the season. Elite teams will qualify to extend the season and attend either US Finals in Dallas, Texas, or Summit in

68

Orlando, Fla., in May 2020. Wildfire Teams that qualify will attend one out-of-state competition per year. Tryouts for the 2019-2020 Season will be held from 4 - 6 p.m. April 24 - 26. Time Commitment: Three to five hours of practice per week, up to seven local competitions per season, approximately three community performances per year, and one out-of-state competition per year for qualifying teams. Wildfires strives to be one of the most affordable competitive cheer programs in Colorado. For team costs, please contact Kelly Moore at 970-460-6143 or attend our parent information meeting at 7 p.m. April 24. Flag Football Flag Football The Windsor Flag Football league’s focus is to teach the fundamentals of football in a team setting. Each age group will be split into two different divisions: Draft or Open (if overall registration numbers allow). In both divisions, participants will learn football fundamentals, with the exception of tackling or blocking (non-contact league), with an emphasis of equal participation and winning being secondary. Teams play 5 vs. 5 and are scheduled for six games with an end-of-season playoff if scheduling constraints permit. Draft Division Players attend an assessment date. Players will be assessed on basic football skills and athleticism, and are placed on teams according to skill level and grade, with team parity as the main goal. Requests are not

Sports Flag Football Requests Draft Division coaches select their team through the assessment process; therefore, requests cannot be guaranteed for a child to be placed on a specific team, with a specific coach, on a specific practice day, or with another player. guaranteed for practice location, practice day/time, or a specific coach. Teams are selected by the coaches with a player draft after the assessment. Open Division The Open Division is made up of teams with kids who want to register together as a team. To register for this division you must have already been contacted by a coach. Players in this league do not go through the assessment process. Individual players registered in the Open Division without a coaches consent will be moved to the Draft Division. Coaches Wanted This program relies on parent volunteers to coach. It’s sad when kids miss out on the action because of a coaching shortage. Please contact us if you are willing to coach. Coaches pick their own practice schedule that accommodates their schedules. Call 970-674-3515 for more information. Draft Division Assessments Draft Division teams are formed through the player assessment process in an effort to create balanced teams. Players and coaches in the Draft Division should attend the assessment day to be assigned to a team. Assessments will be held at Chimney Park at 5:30 p.m. on the following dates: • Grade K - 1: Tuesday, Aug. 13 • Grade 2 - 3: Wednesday, Aug. 14 • Grades 4 - 5 and 6 - 8: Thursday, Aug. 15

DEMONSTRATION GARDEN

Take Classes or Volunteer at the Garden The Treasure Island Demonstration Garden is an awardwinning public garden that features hundreds of plants that flourish in Windsor. It is one of only 70 Plant Select program demonstration gardens in a five-state region. The garden is open for public viewing from sunrise to sunset, and is located adjacent to Laku Lake Road, along the Poudre River Trail, south of Eastman Park. Roadside parking is available via the 7th Street entrance. Most of the garden is accessible with paved surfaces. Garden volunteers are available to speak on particular subjects or to provide an overview of the garden. Tours are available as long as the weather permits. For more information, call the volunteers at 303-726-7634. Gardening Classes First and Third Wednesday May – September 2019 Classes will be held at the garden at 9 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. Topics will center around planting, maintaining, and improving your gardens. Speakers will be from Colorado Master Gardeners in Weld County and volunteers at Treasure Island Demonstration Garden. Most classes will be 45

minutes to an hour in length. For more information, visit weldmastergardeners.org/calendar or call 303-726-7634. All classes are weather permitting.
