LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Eric Lucas, Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture While the transition from summer to fall can sometimes be bittersweet as temperatures begin to change and our time spent at the lake, in the mountains, or on vacation dwindles, I like to focus on the excitement of the future and what it holds! This fall holds plenty of excitement in many forms for residents of Windsor with the return of our annual Harvest Festival, followed by a new and improved Oktoberfest! In addition, we will open the new destination playground at Main Park complete with a 23-foot-tall net structure and zip line. Additionally, a new neighborhood park in the Village East Subdivision will feature our first ninja warrior course and nature playground! This is in addition to all of the sports, programs, classes, and cultural opportunities that can be found in the Eric Lucas, M.S., CPRP Fall Activity Guide! As always, please feel free to reach out and let us know how we are doing and what areas we could improve!

Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival (Estes Park) Pageantry and patriotism, spirit and spectacle, talent and teamwork combine in this awesome display of music and might. More than 300 performers fill Estes Park’s Fairgrounds Arena in a truly spectacular performance. The term “tattoo” derives from the cries of the 17th and 18th-century Dutch innkeepers, who, as the fifes and drums of the local regiment signaled a return to quarters would cry, “Doe den tap toe!” — ”Turn off the taps!” The sound of the “taps” caused the innkeepers’ customers to depart and return to their barracks. The word “tattoo” evolved over time, and refers to what developed as a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands of today. The award-winning Peterson Air and Space Museum is Colorado’s oldest aviation museum. It is the site of Colorado Springs’ first municipal airfield. The four original airfield structures, built between 1928 and 1941, still remain. In fact, three of those buildings anchor the museum complex, which includes an airpark and Medal of Honor park. The museum is named after 1st Lieutenant Edward J. Peterson, a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps pilot and native son of Englewood, Colo. Tragically, he perished after a crash on the airfield on Aug. 9, 1942. The base was renamed in his honor in December that same year. Today, the museum attracts more than 20,000 military and civilian visitors annually, from all states and many countries. The buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and create a prized state historic district right inside the active-duty USAF base. Liberty Puzzles (Boulder) On this tour, take a step back in time to the golden age of jigsaw puzzles. In the 1930s, before the advent of die-cut (stamped) cardboard puzzles, most puzzles were made of wood, and hand cut using a scroll saw. Usually, the wood was approximately ¼” thick. With the end of the Roaring Twenties and the onset of the Great Depression, people were looking for cheap alternatives for entertainment. A jigsaw puzzle craze exploded worldwide. Numerous companies sprang up to meet the demand. By the early 1940s and the start of World War II, the craze had died down and die-cut puzzles were now hitting the market. The art and popularity of the hand-cut puzzle subsequently waned significantly. Liberty Puzzles are a throwback to the golden age of jigsaw puzzles! Liberty Puzzles contains dozens of hand-

drawn “whimsy” pieces intricately cut into the shapes of characters, animals, and geometric designs. They are works of art within art and are manufactured in Boulder, Colo., USA, USA, USA! Walking Level: Easy Registration Deadline: Friday prior Th

Molly Brown House (Denver) The Molly Brown House Museum stands as an enduring symbol of the turn of the 20th century in Denver. In the 1880s, the lucky few who made millions in the mountains, the railroads, or trade moved to the prestigious Capitol Hill neighborhood. This included Isaac and Mary Large who made their fortune in silver mining and built the house at 1340 Pennsylvania Avenue. They commissioned the well-known architect William Lang who combined the styles of Classic Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque to create a unique and eclectic home. The home contained all of the modern technology of the day, including electricity, indoor plumbing, heat, and telephone. Join us on this tour to learn the rest of this fascinating story. Art - Adult Influential Artists: History and Art-Making Workshops It is the job of an artist to critically observe the world around them, and every work of art is an expression of that experience. The events of the 1930s and 1940s had a profound impact on artists everywhere, as war forces people to rethink their perceptions. In these classes, we will take a look into how artists responded to the events happening around them, and, in turn, how art helped shape the world’s perception of these events. Each class will end with a project based on the topic. These classes are being offered to accompany the exhibit “Convincing the Nation” on view at the Art & Heritage Center. Myofascial Release Workshop When paired with a yoga practice, myofascial release is very effective in releasing muscular tension and soreness, increasing range of motion, and working with scar tissue. This two-hour workshop will begin with an overview of the function and role of fascia. You will learn the goals of myofascial release and what to avoid. Then, using a few props — tennis balls, yoga blocks, and blankets — we will dive into specific instruction for the whole body: feet, legs, hips, neck, and shoulders. DEMONSTRATION GARDEN

Let it Grow at Treasure Island Demonstration Garden The Treasure Island Demonstration Garden is an award-winning public garden that features hundreds of plants that flourish in Windsor. It is one of only 70 Plant Select program demonstration gardens in a five-state region. The Plant Select program features plants that are durable, resilient, non-invasive, and unique, based upon research conducted by Colorado State University and the Denver Botanic Garden. These special species thrive in western gardens, resist disease, and tolerate low-water conditions.
