Nestled on the banks of Cherry Creek, the Four Mile House was the last stop coming west to Denver along the Cherokee Trail. It was a welcome site for the weary travelers, a place to wash off the trail dust, have a drink of cool fresh water, find a home-cooked meal, or spend the night before heading in to Denver. The house was built in 1859 by the Brantner brothers who planned to settle in the area. The Brantners sold the Four Mile House to the widow Mary Cawker in 1860. Mary and her two teenage children opened the house as a stage stop from 1860 to 1864, when she sold the property to Levi and Mille Booth. The Booths continued to offer the same hospitality to travelers, while building a thriving farm. Today, the twelve-acre site serves as a portal into Denver and the West’s pioneer past. The Four Mile House, a Denver Landmark, is the centerpiece of the Park and is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. Visitors can tour the historic house, say hello to horses, goats, and chickens, learn about the craftsmanship of the historic barns and outbuildings, or just spread a blanket under a shady tree and enjoy a beautiful day. Food For Life with Sapna Von Reich

Introduction to How Foods Fight Cancer

Introduction to How Foods Fight Diabetes Diabetes is a major public health problem of epidemic proportions. Uncontrolled, diabetes can lead to complications from head to toe, including stroke, loss of vision, heart disease, kidney failure and various problems due to nerve damage and circulatory problems. Research studies have demonstrated that a plant-based nutrition approach reduces the risk of diabetes and can greatly benefit those who have been diagnosed with the disease. This class offers a cooking demonstration, and provides samples of delicious and health-promoting dishes.

Certain diet patterns seem to have a major effect in helping people diagnosed with cancer to live longer, healthier lives. The National Cancer Institute research shows that as much as 50% of cancer risk may be related to diet. In this class, you will learn about the right food choices that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer as well as overcome the disease after it has been diagnosed. This class is an introduction to how foods fight cancer while enjoying a cooking demonstration and tasting delicious, healthful dishes. A $15 supply fee is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

The Canine Life and Social Skills (C.L.A.S.S.) Program

Does your dog have C.L.A.S.S.™? Most of us want to include our dogs fully in our lives, which is much easier when we give them boundaries and skills with real-life relevance. C.L.A.S.S.™ will show you how to teach these skills using effective, rewardbased methods.

What your dog will learn: Attention, target, place (go to your mat), impulse control, come when called, sit and down stay, wait at the door, meet and greet, wait for food bowl, and more. What’s the best part? Your dog can actually earn degrees! Evaluation for degrees is not required to participate in class. But if you wish to take the degree evaluations, your dog can earn a B.A. for dogs, an M.A. for dogs, or even a PhD for dogs! Once you and your dog have completed a degree, you can

proudly state, “My Dog has C.L.A.S.S.™!” with downloadable social media icons for Facebook, etc., as well as upload your dog’s photo in the My Dog has C.L.A.S.S.™ Gallery of Graduates. Find out what you can receive and examples of what you and your dog will learn by logging on the www. mydoghasclass.com. Do-It-Yourself Picture Framing with Joe Osmann

If you have taken an artwork, photograph, poster or other object to a frame shop and were surprised by the price of custom framing, you may be motivated to learn some basic matting and framing skills. With relatively inexpensive tools, some of which you may already own, you can learn to cut attractive mats, cut glass and assemble a handsome framed project. This course provides short demonstrations of professional techniques followed by hand-on instruction centered on your personal framing projects.

Cost–cutting tips and color and design theory will be discussed with examples to assist you in making appropriate framing and matting decisions. $35 $35 A $5 supply fee is due to the instructor at the first class.

Winter Water and Landscape Tips

Watering Trees and Shrubs During Winter

Dry air, little soil moisture and fluctuating temperatures are common during fall and winter. Without supplemental irrigation, many plants suffer from damage. Many trees and shrubs do not respond immediately to drought, but severe drought stress can affect plant growth, health and vigor for years. Winter injury usually results in death of fine root hairs, which absorb water and nutrients. Plants may also be weakened, resulting in increased disease and insect problems. Water plants only when daytime temperatures are above 40° F. Apply water during the middle of the day so plants have time to soak up water before possible freezing at night. Plants near the foundation of the home or fences are more susceptible to injury due to reflected heat and intense sunlight. Established trees and shrubs should be watered every four weeks if there is no snow cover or natural precipitation. Newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered every two weeks. Pay special care to evergreens, as their needles continue to lose water throughout the winter.
