HOLLY WOOD

COLORADO

An Exhibit at the Windsor Community Recreation Center

Hop the train and try your luck in Windsor. Back in the 1930s, hobos rode the rails from town to town looking for work and a decent meal. The small town of Windsor was considered a safe haven for hobos. Come live and play at the hobo camp, work for your food, and learn the“hobo code”. This program teaches children about the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression using music, art, stories, and the language of hobos.

June 20th – August 26th, 2011 The Town of Windsor Museum presents Hollywood, Colorado, a traveling exhibit developed by the Aurora History Museum. This exhibit explores the myriad of movies that have been filmed in part or in their entirety in Colorado. Colorado has been the backdrop for over 500 movies since 1898. Movies such as the original True Grit, starring John Wayne, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman are notable examples. More recent movies filmed in Colorado include, City Slickers, Catch and Release, Resurrecting the Champ, and The Bucket List. The exhibit features original movie posters and footage of more than 100 years of Colorado films set in areas such as Golden, Morrison, Cañon City and throughout the high country.

Experience school 120 years ago just like the children of Windsor’s farmers, merchants, and immigrants. This program teaches children about school life at the turn-of-the century through lessons, hands-on activities, music, and play.

Indian Cooking with Sapna Von Reich

Curry in a Hurry What do you get when American efficiency meets the authentic Indian curry? Sapna introduces you to curry in the modern world by teaching three different styles of Indian curry, each taking less than 15 minutes without compromising taste or flavor. All dishes that are hot and spicy are not curries. All Curries are not fiery hot, either. Once you familiarize yourself with these unique styles, you can use them to make vegetables, fish or even fruit curries. Tonight’s menu will include: Red and Black Bean Curry with Spinach, Mixed Vegetable Curry, Shrimp Curry and Mango Fruit Cream.

Spice is fundamental to all Indian cooking. How spices are used, mixed, and, when they are added to a dish is essential to overall quality. Ayurvedic texts prescribe herbs and spices for their curative and therapeutic properties. Learn and serve a heavenly assortment of “Spicy and Oil Free” Indian salads. These are simply made, but pack a lot of flavor. On the Menu: 1. Spicy Peanut Masala 2. Healthy Sour Cream with fresh vegetables 3. Moong sprouts and Cabbage Salad 4. Fresh Fruit Salad with Cilantro Chutney 5. Ginger Lemonade.

Healthy Greens, Indian Style

Dal 101 (Vegan/Vegetarian)

Leafy greens pack a punch of aesthetics, flavor, and versatility. You are invited to journey into the wondrous world of East Indian preparations of leafy greens. Many do not know how easy it is to cook leafy greens. A nutritional powerhouse they are delicious sautéed. They also pair beautifully with a multitude of spices, grains, beans, and proteins from all corners of the planet. This menu includes: ~ Collard Greens with Coconut ~ Saag (Spinach and Lentil Curry) ~ Kale with Potatoes, Turmeric Rice Pulao with Vegetables ~ Carrot Pudding.

Dal, a Sanskrit name that refers to all pulses, legumes, and their food derivatives, still forms the mainstay of the amino acid (protein) supply to the largely vegetarian population in the Indian subcontinent. In addition to being high in protein, lentils also contain a copious amount of essential dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. This menu includes a popular lentil appetizer, a soup, Spinach and Lentil Curry (Saag), and a Lentil Stew served over Basmati Rice.
