WINDSOR MATTERS MAY 2022

Windsor Celebrates Water Conservation Month This May, dive into water conservation and learn how to be waterwise. To reduce water use and save money on your utility bill, swap old appliances for high efficiency replacements, replace grass with drought resistant plants, and check the settings on your home irrigation controller. In May, learn more and pick up a free home water conservation kit during Coffee with the Mayor on Friday, May 13, 10 to 11 a.m., at the Community Recreation Center and Pints with Paul on Wednesday, May 11, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the 408 Exchange Tavern.

Give Your Home Sprinkler System a Spring Check-up Make every drop count when it comes to watering home landscapes. Get the most from your water with these tips. 1. Periodically check your system. Look for leaks and inspect each head. Adjust as needed, making sure they clear the lawn and are not tilted. Water is wasted when heads are not at the proper height, level or pointed in the correct direction. 2. If you have access to irrigation water in the early morning hours, water between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. The air is coolest at this time, limiting evaporation. 3. Ensure water is not running off your property. Watch your landscape and adjust zone run times as needed so water can be fully absorbed. 4. Many irrigation systems come with the ability to make seasonal adjustments, which not only conserves water, but also results in a healthier landscape by matching water applied to landscape needs. In May, your lawn needs 50% less water than it needs in July. As the days get longer and hotter, increase the seasonal adjustment until you’re at one hundred percent in July. Decrease water usage until the end of the season, based on the chart below.

Seasonal Lawn Watering Schedule Most spray heads disperse about 2" of water per hour; rotator sprinklers about 1/3" per hour. Water three times a week through the season. Adjust for weather.
