WINTER WATERING TIPS

Maintaining Trees and Shrubs During Winter Drought Conditions This winter season is off to an abnormally dry start. According to the US Drought Monitor, Weld and Larimer Counties are experiencing areas of moderate to severe drought. Unless your yard uses xeriscaping, when conditions are right, occasional winter watering for trees, shrubs and perennials can be a good practice. Windsor’s Forestry Division offers these tips to residents: • During winter months, it is best to leave home irrigation systems turned off. Water left in the system will freeze and may cause damage to pipes and equipment. Instead, use a hose or watering can to deliver water to plants. • During periods of time without rain or snow and only when temperatures are 40 degrees and above, water one to two times per month. • Do not water if the ground is frozen, as the water will not be absorbed. If a screwdriver can be easily pushed into the ground, it’s not frozen. • As a general rule, provide a tree with 10 gallons of water for each inch of trunk diameter during a single watering. Do not over-water! Adding mulch around trees and other plants can help them better retain water all year long. And last but not least, consider making a New Year’s resolution to replace water-thirsty plants and shrubs with drought-tolerant xeriscaping, also known as a water wise landscaping solution.
