RAIN DRAIN IN THE

As water from outdoor sources—such as rain runoff, sprinklers, and hoses—travels toward stormwater drains, it can sweep up contaminants along the way. Everything from fertilizer to oil can move along with the water and end up in Windsor's waterways. Follow these tips to help keep our water clean. For more information, visit windsorgov.com/Stormwater. Grass clippings and excessive fertilizer can contribute to algae growth. Dumping clippings from a single yard mowing in waterways or where it can end up in a storm drain can contribute to as much as 100 pounds of algae.

Fallen leaves can clog storm drains and potentially cause local flooding. Leaves account for as much as 56% of phosphorus in stormwater.

Dog waste that is left behind can contribute to high levels of nutrients in the water, which promotes algae growth. Up to 390 million pounds of dog poop can wash into waterways every year. Always pick up after your dog—even in your own yard!

Instead of washing your car in the driveway, wash your car at a commercial car wash. Soap and grime can run down driveways and into storm drains.

The Most Effective Way to Prevent West Nile Virus is to Prevent Mosquito Bites The Town of Windsor relies on data-based decision making and integrated mosquito management through a company called Vector Disease Control International (VDCI) to help control the spread of West Nile Virus in Windsor. VDCI conducts weekly mosquito testing and data collection to determine where mosquito control actions are needed. DRAIN STANDING WATER Drain any collected water to prevent mosquitoes laying eggs. Common culprits are tires, cans, flower pots, clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, toys and puddles.

DAWN & DUSK ARE PRIME TIME Mosquitoes carrying the virus are most active at dawn and later at dusk, so limit outdoor activities or take extra precautions. USE MOSQUITO REPELLENT There are several effective mosquito repellents on the market. Always follow label instructions carefully. DRESS FOR SUCCESS Long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk or in areas where mosquitoes are active go a long way in fighting the bite!
