Do It Yourself! Tutorial by Minna Paajanen First I would like to say that there are so many different ways to color with Distress Inks and this is just one way (my way) that I color with this medium. I’m really not an expert, I just love to color with these and wanted to share my technique with you! - Minna Supplies: Whimsy Stamps Queens Cutie by KennyK, Canson Montval Aquarelle watercolor paper; two different sizes of ZIG waterbrushes: Medium (green) and Detail (yellow); Distress Inks (I use both refills and pads), and Archival Ink in Jet Black for stamping, acrylic blocks to use as palettes

Step 1 For colors which I have refills for, I place small drops of each color onto the acrylic block. For colors that I do not have refills for, I stamp the pad onto another block.

1

Step 2 I always start with the face using Tattered Rose. I color the face all over with this color using the Detail-sized waterbrush.

Step 3

2, 3 ŠWhimsy Stamps, LLC.

I do the same for the neck and hands. I end up with something similar to the picture on the left.

Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine June 2011, Issue 1

Visit us at http://www.whimsystamps.com

12

Do It Yourself! Tutorial by Minna Paajanen Step 4

4

I create shadows on her face with the color Tea Dye. I try to imagine where the light is coming from, which is really difficult for me. In this case, I visualize that the light is coming from the left, so naturally, the right side of her face should be darker because it is in the shadows. I color in such a way that the color will be lighter towards the center of her face. To create the shadows around the nose, I also use Tea Dye, but it must be done very carefully.

Step 5

5

I end up with something like the picture to the right above.

7

Step 7 Now I am almost done coloring the face. We only need to color the cheeks and the lips.

6 Step 6 I use one more color, Vintage Photo, for the deepest areas on the face. For this color, I have to use Distress Ink Pads because I don’t have this as a refill.

13

Do It Yourself! Tutorial by Minna Paajanen Step 8

8

For the cheeks and lips, I often use Aged Mahogany, or sometimes Worn Lipstick. If you use Aged Mahogany, you have to put it very carefully because it is a very strong color. I have used Aged Mahogany for the cheeks on the picture to the left. As you can see, I’ve only put it as little spots on her cheeks.

9

Step 9 And now the face is colored!

10

Step 10 I chose to color the shirt Victorian Velvet. I always start by laying down the color the same way: on the edges.

11

Step 11 I try to color in such a way that it is lighter towards the other side (left), which is where the light is coming from.

Step 12

12 ©Whimsy Stamps, LLC.

For the shadows, I often use the combination of whatever color that I’m using and Black Soot. For this example, to create the shadows for this image, I used Victorian Velvet and Black Soot. I mixed them together on an acrylic block and laid the color down on the opposite side of where the light is coming from. Sometimes, if I want shadows that are a little bit deeper, I use only Black Soot. For really light shadows, I use Pumice Stone.

14

Do It Yourself! Tutorial by Minna Paajanen 13

14

Step 13

Step 14

Here I have colored in and blended the shadows.

I have added Victorian Velvet again on top of the shadows.

17

16

15

Step 15 I have blended only a little this time to create a more dramatic shadow. If you want an even deeper shadow, you can add Black Soot and then color it over again with Victorian Velvet.

18

Step 17

Step 16 For the sleeves of the shirt, I use Pumice Stone.

ŠWhimsy Stamps, LLC.

After coloring the sleeves with Pumice Stone, I then added Black Soot for the shadows.

Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine June 2011, Issue 1

Step 18 And now we’ve colored her shirt!

15

Do It Yourself! Tutorial by Minna Paajanen 19

21

20

Step 19 For the trousers, I use the color Weathered Wood. Again, I start coloring on the edges where the shadows should be.

Step 20 I pull the color towards where the light is coming from. Here I have colored almost all of the trousers.

22

Step 22 Here I have used only a little bit of Black Soot to create the shadows and then blended it.

ŠWhimsy Stamps, LLC.

Step 21 For the shadows I use Black Soot.

24

23

Step 23 Next are the shoes. I use the color Antique Linen first.

Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine June 2011, Issue 1

Step 24 Here I have colored the shoes Antique Linen and then added the color Pumice Stone to the bottom of the shoe.

Visit us at http://www.whimsystamps.com

16

Do It Yourself! Tutorial by Minna Paajanen 25

Step 25 Now I have colored the bottom of the shoe and the upper part, too.

26

Step 26

Step 27

To create the shadows, I use the colors Vintage Photo and Black Soot.

This is how it looks after fishing the shadows in the shoe.

28

You can create even deeper shadows with the color Walnut Stain.

ŠWhimsy Stamps, LLC.

30

29

Step 29

Step 28

27

Here I have colored the shadows with Walnut Stain and added a little bit more Black Soot for the bottom. I think it needed it!

Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine June 2011, Issue 1

Step 30 Almost done! Only the hair left. I use Antique Linen first and sparingly add the color here and there.

Visit us at http://www.whimsystamps.com

17

Do It Yourself! Tutorial by Minna Paajanen 32 31 33

Step 32

Step 31 I blend and color the hair with Antique Linen.

34

Step 15 For the sleeves of the shirt, I use Pumice Stone.

©Whimsy Stamps, LLC.

At this time, I add Walnut Stain for the shadows. Sometimes I use Vintage Photo and after that, Walnut Stain.

Step 34 And she looks like this now! Finally the image is completely colored, but I always add one extra thing: highlights! You can use an Opaque White pen or white paint. Yes, I often use white acrylic paint for my projects and I sometimes use it to add highlights to my images, too!

Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine June 2011, Issue 1

Step 33 Here, I feel that it’s still a little bit too light so I add Walnut Stain for shadows using the same technique.

35 Step 35 Finally the image is ready!

Shadow Box Card Tutorial by Iris Wiechmann

1

Step 1 Score the 2 red cardstock pieces (7.5 x 5.5 inches) at 0.5, 1.0, 6.5 and 7 inches

2

Step 2 Adhere the 5.5 x 5.5 designer paper piece to one of the red cardstock pieces (see photo). This is now the front of your card.

3

Step 3 Cut out the window where you want it to be using your preferred dies. In my sample my window is in the center of the card and I used Spellbinders Oval Nestabilities. After cutting out the window, fold the cardstock on the scored lines as shown in the photo.

4

Step 4

Using the second piece of 7.5 x 5.5 red cardstock (the inside and back of your card), adhere the 5.5 x 5.5 piece of blue cardstock and the image. I cut out my image using the same size of dies. Use the card front as template to make sure the image is positioned right and can be seen through the window. Fold red cardstock on scored lines.

5

Step 5 Decorate the back of the card (which is the back of the second piece of red cardstock). I usually use my cut out, left over pieces from the window.

6 Step 6 Decorate the card front with your main embellishments like sentiment, flowers, frame around the window etc.

Step 7 Now it’s time to assemble the card. To hold the front and back piece firmly together I used Scor-Tape. Apply the tape between the 0.5 inch score line and the outside on both sides. Align the front and back piece of the card and press firmly together. This is how your card should look now:

5 Now you can just add the rest of your embellies like rhinestones and Stickles. torial d the tu e y jo n e ou h it! I hope y e fun wit and hav

Step 2 Step 1 Using your die cutting machine, cut out the Hot Air Balloon Die and the larger balloon die from the Balloon Die Set.

Pop the die cuts out of the dies. Your dies should look like these.

3

Step 3 Snip the bottom part of the larger balloon die cut. It should look like a simple oval. Now you can layer them!
