Happy Spring Whimsy Friends!

Hello crafty friends,

We hope the winter months have passed and it’s finally warming up where you live. The grass is greening, the trees all have buds, and some of the spring flowers are blooming here. It’s definitely feeling like Spring and boy were we ever ready!

The snow is melting, the birds are chirping, the bulky coats are making their way to the back of the closet…and we here at Whimsy Stamps have been working hard to bring you another brand new issue of the Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine!

Our Issue 12 is filled with wonderful Spring and Summer themed creations as well as a fun retro theme section and an enchanted section for all those fairy lovers out there. And we introduce you to our newest artist Monika Martinson along with our usual beyond cards and tutorials sections to get your creative juices flowing. We hope you will find this latest issue inspiring.

We are happy to present to you an issue with tons of tips and tutorials (we know you love those) and as always, bountiful inspiration using the wide variety of products offered by Whimsy Stamps. cards Are you in need of some fun ideas that go beyond card making? Look no further, our designers have some great ideas!

Created by Shannah Bartle Whimsy Stamps products: "Black-Eyed Susan Butterfly", "Daisy Butterfly"and "Sunflower Butterfly" Digital images by Moon Cookie Gallery; Papers:Any cheap coloured cardstock (or thick paper) in several colours; Embellishments:Googly Eyes, Ribbon, Thin wire pieces (I used the stems of paper flowers, but the wire from twist ties would work well too); Tools/Other: Scissors, Printer, Empty Toilet Rolls. Step-by-Step Instructions: 1. Copy and paste Moon Cookie Gallery digital butterflies into a Word Document for easier resizing. 2. Enlarge one image per page so each is approximately 7.5" x 6" and save. 3. Choose your colours for each butterfly, and print enlarged image onto each colour card you will need. 4. Cut out main butterfly shape. Fussy cut flowers, leaves and flower centres, and paste pieces onto butterfly. 5. Cover toilet rolls with coloured paper, and stick to the centre of butterflies with double sided tape. 6. Cut lengths of ribbon approximately 3.5” long, and tie a knot in one end - trim to neaten. 7. Poke one end of wire into knot and hold in place at other end with double sided tape. 8. Use another piece of tape to adhere two pieces to the inside of each toilet roll as antennae. 9. Add googly eyes and draw on eyelashes to finish. 10. Use butterflies as ‘finger puppets’, put name on them for place holders, or fill them with lollies as party favours!

Gift Tags created by Marilyn Scheller Whimsy Stamps Products: BB & Twigs, Touch of Sweetness; Paper: XPress It Blending Card; Coloring Medium/Ink: Copics, Memento Tuxedo Black ink, Tim Holtz Tumbled Glass and Frayed Burlap distress inks to shade; Embellishments: twine, Stickles Dry Fine Glitter; Tools/Other: Mason Jar Die; Instructions: I used Paint.net to clip and use only the bee from the BB & Twigs digi, then rotated and sized three of them. On a practice piece of paper, I printed them off, making sure they fit into the outline of the stamp, then did another print onto the good cardstock. Once satisfied with how they were positioned, I stamped the jar over them cut around the stamped image with the Mason Jar Die and the Cuttlebug. To do the reverse side, I positioned the bees and lettering, then taped the cut out onto the paper backwards (the blank side of your die cut is facing out) and printed the flip side.

Whimsy Stamps has a new artist and her name is Monika Martinson. She is the talented illustrator behind the Moma’s Collection of rubber stamps. Monika illustrates beautiful floral images and nature designs. And she has shared some of her amazing card design work too!

Tell us a little about yourself - anything you'd like to share about you personally. I live in Sweden, just outside of Stockholm with my daughter who will turn 9 this summer, her father and a Bengal cat that is nothing like a cat. I work full time as a communications manager but my heart is really in creating, good thing my job allows me to be creative. I love to bake, scrapbook, draw, photograph, knit, crochet, write and so on. I go around with a thousand ideas in my head constantly! I only wish there would be more hours on a day so I could make them come true.

I cant really describe the feeling to see my designs end up on someone’s card or other project, knowing how much time and effort there is behind any project. That is probably what I love most and what makes me feel really humbled that someone actually wants to put my motives on her card.

What is your absolute favorite of the Whimsy Stamps that you've illustrated? How did you start your art career? Did you always want to be Right now, I think it is the “Cup of Sunshine” set. Tutorial by Lori Pachkowsky It's always nice to add a little something special for those important birthdays. Make those little boys and girls feel special with their own personalized birthday badge. A few easy steps and in about 30 minutes you have a cute pin on ribbon. It also fits nicely to the front of a card so they can just unpin and wear! Supplies: ● Two - 2.25 inch x 12 inch strips of designer paper ● Two - 2 inch x 12 inch strips of designer paper ● Star punches ● Misc. Ribbon pieces ● Two white circles 2.5 inches in diameter ● One circle sentiment - (All Star from the Sports Fan Set) ● One 2.5 inch diameter circle coloured cardstock ● One 2.25 inch circle designer paper. ● Safety pin ● Glue, Double Stick Tape, Scoring tool

1 Step 1: Glue the 2.25 width of Designer paper on to the 2.5 inch piece of Designer paper to create a coloured border.

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

2 Step 2: Score both pieces at 1/2 inch increments all the way along.

58

April 2013, Issue 12

4 3 Step 3: Fold both pieces like an accordion. Step 4: Glue the two 12 inch pieces together to create a circle.

5 Step 5: glue the 2.5 inch coloured card stock in place to hold the shape. Add the 2.25 inch circle and the sentiment.

7

6 Step 6: Glue one 2.5 inch piece of white cardstock to the back side . Add double stick tape and randomly stick the ribbons on. Punch two holes in the other white circle and slide the safety pin through.

Step 7: Glue the safety pin circle on top of the other circle to cover the ribbon ends. Step 8: Finish off with any necessary embellishments. To make a smaller bader, simply narrow the width of the 12 inch strips to approx 1.5 inches x 12 inches.

Tutorial by Marilyn Scheller Always struggling on trying to find ways to present your gift card as a gift? How about trying out Marilyn’s tutorial on how to create a gift card/money holder?

1

Step 1: Cut cardstock as per above measurements. The piece is 3.25” wide x 12” long. Score at 2” and 7.25” (2” and then 5.25” from the 2” score mark).

3

2 Step 2: On the 4.75” end, remove a portion (I used a Quikcutz die)

4

Step 4: Your scored and trimmed cardstock now looks like the photo above

Step 3: On the 2” end, angle the edges to resemble a tag. (I measured 1” down from the fold line and ¾” out on either side from the center and did cut on the angle.

5 © Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

Step 5: From your designer paper, cut 2 pieces 5” x 3”, 1 piece of the tab shape which is also 5” x 3” but cut a circle out, ¼” larger than the cardstock piece (you are cutting the circle larger so the circle is ¼” smaller than the cardstock), 2 pieces of the tag shape. Making sure each edge is ¼” smaller than the cardstock piece. The size of my digi sentiment is 2 ¼ ” x 2 ½ ” and the surrounding cardstock is 2 ½ “ x 2 ¾”.

60

April 2013, Issue 12

6 Step 6: The pieces were machine stitched and then holes cut for eyelets.

7 Step 7: Add the eyelets and twine. I used MFT Die-Namics Stacking Stars and added Stickles Dry Fine Diamond Glitter.

8 Step 8: Now you can add a note and tuck it inside, insert your gift card or money, tie it up and you are finished

Tutorial by Janette Garcia Transform simple pre-printed thank you cards with a fun image and a little color. Don’t forget to make the matching envelope! I will show you how easy it is to make a great set to gift or use.

1 Step 1: I have used half a pack of blank Thank You cards from the dollar bin at Michael’s. I liked this set because it has a border and I thought it would be fun to add an image and color it.

2

Step 2: Here are one of the stamped cards with an image.

3 Step 3: Here are all of my cards stamped. I have also stamped half of the image on the envelope for an extra special touch.

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

4 Step 4: Next I have colored them using Prisma Color Pencils and blending with a paper stump dipped in mineral spirits. I chose to color with pencils because I didn’t want the color to soak through to the inside of the card.

62

April 2013, Issue 12

Here is the finished set. I think they came out pretty and the image was just perfect.

These are super fun to make and are great to mail out because of how flat they are. It is great to leave out all the layers and frills keeping the focus on the colored image. Here is a closer look at one pair.

Tutorial by Janette Garcia Supplies ● Untreated Wood ● Gel Medium ● Laser Printed Photo ● Sponge ● Small bowl ● Foam brush ● Acrylic Paint ● Mod Podge of Choice I have made this project after being inspired by Pinterest; I visited a bunch of different websites and did a bit of combination of everything that I read. First you will need to gather your materials. Your photo needs to be printed (flipped) mirror view with Laser on regular copy paper. I have printed mine black and white but you can definitely use color.

1 Step 1: I have started by painting the edges with Sea Glass Acrylic Paint by Martha Stewart. I am a bit obsessed with this color at the moment. I have seen people paint the edges black which also looks really nice.

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

2 Step 2: Next you will need to cover your wood with the gel medium this one (Artist’s Loft) purchased at Michael’s craft store. There are variouss brands; I am not sure it would matter much which brand you use. I came to realize that I used much more than what is shown in the picture.

64

April 2013, Issue 12

3 Step 3: Looking back I wish I would of added a bit more gel or done a few layers before adding my picture.

5

4 Step 4: While the gel is still wet you will need to add your picture faced down; and smooth it out. I have used my folding tool from my Cricut kit. You can also use a credit card or ruler. As long as it is smooth. You need to make sure that you do not have any air bubbles. This is why your picture needs to be flipped when printing. When you reveal the picture it will end up on the right direction. Step 6: Once it’s dry then you will begin to remove the paper by adding water and rubbing lightly. I liked using the sponge for the first round since it was easy to add the water. There were some areas that I was too rough which caused the ink to lift with the paper. So please be careful; but don’t be afraid to add the water.

6

Step 5: Then you must wait for the gel to dry overnight.

8

7 Step 7: When thepaper gets wet it becomes translucent and you can see the image above. © Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

Step 8: Here you can see how the paper is balls up as you rub with water. The image becomes more clear as you begin to strip the paper away. 65

April 2013, Issue 12

10

9

Step 9: Here is what it looks like when it is wet. It looks almost clear Step 10: Here is a close-up. As you can see the image still has white residue from the paper.

11

Step 11: Once the paper has dried; then you can see that it still needs a few more rounds of rubbing with water and letting dry. At this point I lprefered to use my fingers instead of the sponge because I was able to feel where there was still paper balling up.

12

Step 12: Here is the wet version of my last rubbing. Once you have stripped away the paper when you rub with your finger tips you can feel a smooth surface that doesn’t ball up. This means you have taken away all or most of the paper leaving the laser image embedded on the gel medium. You can see a few spots where I was a bit too rough with the rubbing.

13 Step 13: Once it has dried you can still see a white film over the image but the Mod Podge will take care of that.

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

Step 14: Here is what the wet Mod Podge looks like. I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to look white like that but it does dry clear.

Insetting dies

Tutorial by Marilyn Scheller

Supplies: Whimsy Stamps Products: KKD Happy Spring; Paper: X-Press It Blend, Stampin’ Up background paper, glitter paper from the stash; Coloring Medium/Ink: Copics; Embellishments: Flat back pearls from the stash, Stickles glue for the bouquet; Tools/Other: Dandelion Border Die, Notables 1 Die

1

Step 1: First, to assemble my supplies, I cut a 6” x12” piece of card stock, scored and folded at 6” for the card base. Then cut a 5.75” piece of patterned paper for the front of the card. I used Quickutz dies to cut a 3.5” circle for the printed image and a 3.75” circle of brown card stock for the matte. Using the Notables die, I cut it over the sentiment and then to make the matte, I simply flip the die over and trace it onto the brown card stock and cut it out with scissors. I printed two extra butterflies so I could add them after and give the image some dimension. This photo also shows I have the image and sentiment coloured, matted and ready to go

Step 2: Using the Dandelion Border die, I cut one out of the patterned paper and one from the glitter paper (save the tiny flowers from the glitter paper) Step 3: Glue the patterned paper down onto the cardstock

3

2 5 4

Step 4: Take the die cut glitter paper, carefully matching it up with the patterned paper and set into the die cut outline on the background paper. At this point, I carefully lifted the edges up a bit at a time and using a glue pen, added dots of glue, then press it down and hold to set

Step 5: Cut a few more of the flower areas on the Dandelion die from scraps and add a pearl center for each. I then assembled the card by gluing down the flowers, adding some pearls to the cut out area of the flowers on the inset and adding a butterfly on top of each of the original, bending it out a bit for dimension

hombre pearls Tutorial by Janette Garcia

Let’s take a pearl swirl into the next level by making it two toned. This is quick and easy with a great result. This is a great touch to be added to any project.

1 Supplies: Pearl Swirl- Want 2 Scrap AirBrush System-Copic Copic Markers: BG4, RV23

Step 1: You need to make sure you are aware of where the ink is spraying. I have to tilt my hand quite a bit. You can practice your aim using a white piece of paper. I have started with BG34 and started spraying from one end of the pearl swirl adding more color on the end.

2 Step 2: Then with RV23 I have started from the opposite side of the swirl and worked my way towards the center. Again adding more color at the end and adding less where the two colors overlap. Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

3 Step 3: Lastly I have used a exacto knife and cut out the little strips of adhesive holding the separate swirls together. I find that the pearls keep the swirl shape pretty well

7 8 Step 8: Now begin assembling your water lily. Start with the largest two layers, adhere them offset. Step 7: When shaping them now they look more like stamens.

9

Step 9: When layering and gluing the flower together offset each petal layer. My pink cardstock was double sided so I decided to use one white layer between the pinks.

10 11 Step 10: Now add the last 2 layers, the stamens.

Step 11: At last, adhere the leaves to the lily and decorate the center with a pear or a rhinestone.

Here’s the finished product! I hope you liked my water lily tutorial and that I could inspire you to give it a try!

Easy window front Tutorial by shannah Bartle

Here is a quick and easy tutorial on how to create a window front for your cards! Use this technique if you want to step outside of the box and are tired of simple, square cards. Create a 5.5" x 5.5" square card blank using white cardstock. Cut a piece of "Gazebo" patterned paper to measure 5.25" square, and matt this with purple Bazzill cardstock 5.5". Attach to card front. Open the card and lay flat, with card front facing upwards. Centre the largest oval and hold in place with a small piece of 'magic' tape.

Line up carefully, and run through your die-cutting tool twice to make sure it is cut through all layers. Die-cut a piece of purple card with the largest scalloped oval, then the centre of this with the largest plain oval. Adhere this around the front of the window to create a frame. Tutorial by Janette Garcia I would like to share my techniques for weaving with ribbon. It is a great way to give an extra flair to any project and a fantastic way to use up some of that oh so loved ribbon. With a little work you will be able to achieve a spectacular piece of art.

Supplies: ● Lots of Coordinating Ribbon ● Glue Dots ● Scissors ● Flowers ● Embellishments ● Pearls ● Rhinestones

Step 3: First I like to roughly map out the ribbon on top of my project. Here it will decorate the front cover of a composition book. Weaving requires of over-under method. © Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

Step 2: Next using a small flat glue dot I start positioning the ribbon starting on the top left corner and working my way down and out.

76

April 2013, Issue 12

Step 3: I have started with my first ribbon going down and then one going across. Then my next one will be on top of the across ribbon exactly next to the first one going down. Then my second one going across will need to be under the first one going down. Here is a picture of how it looks starting out. The glue dots help keep the ribbon in place until you are done with the weaving.

Step 4: I then continue adding ribbon varying in texture, width and pattern. If the placement of the added ribbon is wrong then the weaving will not feel tight.

Step 6: Next I have secured all of the ribbon tops and ends with Beacons 3-in-1 glue. This will keep all of the ribbon in place.

Step 5: Once all the weaving is done I will trim all of the ends.

Step 7: Lastly I will decorate by adding flowers, pearls, rhinestones and embellishments. Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

Here is my finished journal together with matching card and pins. The sentiment is from the Whimsy Stamps Bingo Card and Sentiments. 77

Tutorial by Tammy Louise Cunliffe Let’s use our imaginations today and make a memorable gift for Mom to wear and celebrate her special day! The process is simple! The Shape EZ Poinsettia template can be made into so much more than just a simple 2 or three layered paper flower for a card! Let’s design an unforgettable broach that will be admired by everyone. I’ll take you through the process, step by step and equip you too with the confidence to make this project for a gift or even for YOU! You don’t need a cutter either! This can be done by hand if you print the template PDF out onto the wrong or blank side of your favorite DP.

1

2

Step 2: I printed the template 2 times with one of the DP and 2 times with a coordinating DP so to add texture and depth to the petals.

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

Step 1: Let’s pull up your favorite cutting program and size the template for the largest flower to be at approx 3”.

3

Step 3: Let’s use a sponge and your favorite color of Ranger Distress Ink to soften the harsh cut edge of the petals on each of the cuts. ( I used Vintage Photo to antique the flower)

78

April 2013, Issue 12

4 Step 4: You’ll have two or more of each size petals, the template comes with several sizes

5 Step 5: Cut a 1” diameter circle from grunge board and adhere a clasp pin to it with the hot glue gun. I also added one layer of tulle and some feathers just for fun!

7 6 Step 6: Using tulle and three sizes of my standard circle Nestibility Dies and the Cuttle Bug, I cut each of the three size dies three times

Step 7: The next step is to score down the center of each petal

8 9

Step 8: From the back of the paper so that the design on the DP when facing you has an UP dent in the center of each petal Step 9: Now let’s build our flower! Use your favorite brad (I used a pink pearl from Wild Orchid Crafts) Use one of the smallest sized betals first. DP up! Then use tulle in the smallest size circle next. © Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

79

April 2013, Issue 12

11

10 Step 10: Continue to build your flower with as many layers as will fit on your brad or to the size you desire! Remember to start from the smallest to the largest alternating the Dp layers as well as the tulle between each of the dp layers

Step 11: When you’ve attained the desired size and thickness of your “Broach” open the wings of your brad

12 Step 12: Use the hot glue gun again to apply the completed “Broach” to the grunge board attached to the pin and seal your paper flower with a water proof spray sealant. That’s it!

Stamping with

Tutorial by Janette Garcia

Check out the fun results of stamping with acrylic paint; one more way to use your rubber stamps. So easy, so pretty, the texture is so unique; it is a must try! Supplies: Acrylic Paint- Martha Setewart(Beach Glass) Foam brush & tray; Stamp- Whimsy Stamps Lavish Flourishes

Step 1: First add a small amount of paint to a paint tray then spread it out evenly with the foam brush. This must be big enough to fit your stamped image. I am using a wide brush which is perfect for this technique. Step 2: Next place your stamp directly on top of the paint. For best impressions you must not add too much pressure just enough to transfer the paint onto the stamp.

2

1 Step 3: Next stamp directly onto your project. To get the best impression it is key not to apply too much pressure when stamping on your project. You will need to even out the paint on the tray for re-stamping adding more paint as necessary. I love the look and texture that is given by stamping with paint. I really hope you will give it a try.
