Chicago at Venetian Resort LAS VEGAS – One of the most successful and critically acclaimed rock bands of all time will return to The Venetian Theatre inside The Venetian® Resort Las Vegas in 2020 for the third year in a row for an eight-show limited engagement. The shows will be Feb. 28, 29, March 4, 6, 7, 11, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $49.95, plus applicable fees, and are now on sale. A limited number of VIP packages are also available. Ticketmaster.com, Venetian.com, or by call 702.414.9000. Hailed as one of the “most important bands in music since the dawn of the rock and roll era,” the legendary rock and roll band with horns, Chicago, came in at #4. Chicago is the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in six consecutive decades. Chicago was inducted into the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This was their first nomination. They’ve been eligible since 1994. A long time coming! Chicago’s first album, Chicago Transit Authority, was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame in 2014, and the band performed on the GRAMMY stage for the first time that year. Robert Lamm and James Pankow have become inductees of the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017. These legendary songwriters wrote mega-hits such as, “25 or 6 to 4,” “Saturday In The Park,” “Feelin’ Stronger Every Day,” “Make Me Smile,” and many others. On Oct. 4, 2019, CHICAGO

CHRISTMAS was released.Produced by founding member Lee Loughnane, CHICAGO CHRISTMAS is the 37th album of the band’s career and its fourth holiday collection. More than 40 years after its debut, Chicago II still sounds like nothing else. Released in 1970, Chicago’s second album brims with confidence and inspiration as it draws on everything from orchestral music to heavy rock. It spawned a trio of Top Ten hits, and the timeless classic has been remastered to reveal unprecedented clarity and definition. For the first time a new stereo remix, created by British musician and producer Steven Wilson from the 16-track multi-track tapes, made it possible to bring out elements that were muffled or submerged in the mix. The result is a new stereo version of Chicago II that boasts clearness, punch and definition that it didn’t have before. It has been released by Rhino Records on CD and vinyl. Chicago II is being considered for the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame. CHICAGO’s award-winning documentary film, Now More Than Ever: The History Of Chi-

cago premiered on CNN on New Year’s Day and ranked No. 1 among adults 25-54. Chicago’s lifetime achievements include two GRAMMY Awards, two American Music Awards, Founding Artists of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Chicago street dedicated in their honor, and keys to and proclamations from an impressive list of U.S. cities. Record sales top the 100,000,000 mark, and include 21 Top 10 singles, 5 consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One singles and 5 Gold singles. Chicago have toured every year since the beginning - they’ve never missed a year. The original three band members are Robert Lamm on keyboards and vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet and vocals and James Pankow on trombone. The band line-up also includes Wally Reyes, Jr. on drums, Keith Howland on guitar and vocals, Lou Pardini on keyboards and vocals, Ray Herrmann on sax and flute, Neil Donell on vocals, Brett Simons on bass and Ramon “Ray” Yslas on percussion. From the signature sound of the Chicago horns, their iconic Vocalists, and a few dozen of ever-Classic Songs, this band’s concerts are celebrations. 2020 marks the band’s 53rd consecutive year of touring, without missing a single concert date! www.chicagotheband.com

Up Close: From the Editor

We are full of new ideas this new year, anxious to implement them and excited to share them with you, our readers. This year will be a continued year of change and expansion as we progress through the calendar. The staff has joined me in pouring over new and unusual topics that will be of interest to you. But regardless of how hard we try, I know there are some we haven’t included that we should. So we are asking for YOUR help. That’s right. What better way of improving our readership is there than asking YOU to choose the topics, the destinations, the places to go, things to do and people to see? So this month, please help us by going to our website at: https://www. weekendermagazine.com and click on “Contact Us” button at the top right of the home page. It will ask for destination suggestions but I welcome any kind of suggestions as we start 2020 off with a bang. Meanwhile, this month’s issue is full of ideas to rest, relax and rejuvenate after the hectic holiday season. Whether it’s with the whole family or a significant other or just yourself, remember to take time for YOU. (That’s my new motto and New Year’s resolution.) It’s time to get back to work, back to school, or back to planning the next extended weekend getaway. Also remember to check our posts on the website inbetween issues. We have added a new calendar of events page on the “featuring” sections under each state. Due to the popularity of our readers asking “what’s going on this weekend,” we felt this would be the best way to announce. Let us know how you like it and keep those notices coming. They will be updated as soon as they are received. So until next month, here’s looking to a great new year of change.

Bakin’ and Cookin’ With a Purpose

Can anyone tell me why? I heard a story one time of someone who could. As the final exam for a college psychology class, the professor asked one simple question: why? All the students dutifully opened their empty bluebooks and began writing. And writing. And writing. All except one student, that is. He put his name on the cover, turned it in to the professor and went for a cup of coffee. Perhaps he didn’t care about all the whys of life. But I must admit to a certain amount of curiosity about many things. For example, why is it you find a coupon for an item approximately one week after you have already purchased it? Or, what prompted the composer to write a song asking if chewing gum loses its flavor on the bedpost overnight? And my current thought provoking inquiry, how does my favorite inkpen always manage to be in the very bottom of my purse? I can use it and drop it into the bag and less than a minute later, need it again. Is it resting on top where I can see it and find it quickly? Nope, it’s at the bottom – again. Everything else is still in place, so how does it get past all those items so quickly? I recently found a handy little gadget. It is an inkpen/flashlight. Now, before you lose interest and scoff at me for being behind the

inches. That isn’t a whole lot of space for writing some recipes. Thus, I much prefer a nice fine point pen that doesn’t leave inkblots so I can get the ingredients and all instructions to fit on the card. Fortunately, this one fits quite nicely.

times, I DO realize these have been around for years. But every time I come across one, either the pen doesn’t write, or the light is so dim, it is useless. This one however, writes very smoothly and the light is bright enough that I can use it to help me find all sorts of things lost in the bottom of my handbag. You know, things like safety pins, coins, and my other ink pen. There is just one problem though. I had to find this one first in order to use it to find the other one. Along the way, I came across the foam cover for my headphones, two toothpicks, several expired coupons, a few tangled paperclips, a plethora of reminder notes and a collection of writing utensils, none of which are my pen. I know it sounds silly to obsess over something so basic. I have a good reason. I really do. You see, recipe cards are only three by five

CORNBREAD 1 ¼ c. sifted flour 4 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt ¾ tsp. soda 1 c. cornmeal 3 Tbsp. sugar 1 ¼ c. sour milk 2 eggs, well beaten 4 Tbsp. melted butter Mix in order given and pour into a greased 8” square or 9” round baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes at 375 degrees. Why this recipe? Simple. It is a warm comfort food suitable for serving with ham and beans or the soup of your choice. It’s quick and easy to prepare making it perfect for all the cold winter nights ahead of us. Does that answer all your questions? No? Okay, so here’s the rest of the story. That college professor did read that speedy student’s test answer. It was simple and truly profound, not to mention applicable to all aspects of life. To recap, his question: why? The student’s answer: because!

Things to Do:

Consider Glamping for a By Kathleen Walls Guest Editor/Publisher of American Roads & Global Highways One of the first things to decide when planning a trip is “Where will I stay?” Sometimes thinking outside the box is good. Instead of a traditional hotel, consider glamping. For those not familiar with “glamping” it is a cross between “camping” and “glamour.” Naturally, if you are visiting a place with a lot of outdoor activities, the “camping” part is a good choice. However, if you are visiting a city and want more conventional lodgings, the “Glamour” part is more desirable. I’ve used Glamping Hub for lodging ranging from camping style to glamorous and in-between. Glamping Hub works like AirBnB and has a wide range of lodgings.

Elatse’Yi in Ellijay, Georgia is a perfect example of the

camping offerings at Glamping Hub. I stayed in a geodesic dome raised on a platform in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The dome is a large hemispheric shaped tent. There’s the deck’s wood floor with a large carpet. It is about 30 feet in diameter and is furnished simply but comfortably. There’s a king bed and two twins, storage, a table and chairs, nightstand, and three fans. It even has a telescope for viewing the night sky. With no city lights around and perched on a mountain, the view at night is spectacular. It is setup on a wooden deck with a private outdoor bathroom and shower and a deep soaking tub. You are surrounded by woods. Just a few steps off the deck there is a well-stocked cowboy kitchen with butane stove, barbeque pit and, small fridge. There is a large picnic table with benches for dining or I can take my meal to the table inside the dome. If I want to really get a camping feel, there is a campfire circle and chairs. The kitchen -8- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ January, 2020

is stocked with marshmallows, chocolate, and Graham crackers plus rods to roast some-mores over the campfire. Your only neighbors are the owner’s cute farm goats, chickens, and friendly dog next door.

Two Casitas (Pictured above center)

I leaned towards the glamour in Santa Fe recently. This one is a Two Casitas rental named La Paloma. It’s a real adobe home built over 100 years ago so there are no sharp corners; everything is soft and curved. In the living room/bedroom combination there is a beautiful coffee table in front of the red

Unique Getaway que pit in the back courtyard had the weather been warmer. It was winter however and the temperature dipped into the teens. So my favorite furnishing is a cast iron beauty that looked like a wood burning stove but in reality is a cozy gas heater. Naturally La Paloma has a modern heat/AC system but I loved watching the flickering blue flame as I drifted off to sleep in the comfortable king sized bed. I was only about three quarters of a mile from the Plaza, historic heart of Santa Fe and location of many museums, and even less to Canyon Road with lots of art galleries, boutique shops, and restaurants.

leather sofa. The table seems to be a piece of petrified wood sanded and polished to fit the décor. A soothing fountain and light combination offers flowing water sounds and a soft light. The kitchen was fully equipped and attractive with red tile on the floors and beautifully patterned counter and backstop tiles. A real stove and full size fridge made it easy to prepare meals if I wanted. The bathroom had lots of authentic details, there were very New Mexico looking tiles in the shower and the mirror over the lavatory could have come right from old Mexico. There is a hot tub, table and chairs, and barbe-

A did a choice somewhere between camping and glamour at Headwaters Jupiter, a Glamping Hub Eco Retreat on the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter, Florida. This one was three recycled shipping container. Don’t laugh. You wouldn’t believe how comfortable beautifully reconditioned shipping containers can be. It is very spacious could and accommodate eight people. There are two bedrooms and bath upstairs with a fridge and microwave. Downstairs, there are two bedrooms, a nice bath and a well equipped kitchen, dining area, and living room. On each level one of the bedrooms is a double with a large bed and there is a separate room with bunk beds for the kids if traveling with family. Both levels have their own patio area with tables and chairs overlooking the Loxahatchee River. Should you want to barbeque or just enjoy a campfire, there is a lovely fire circle and pit surrounded by flowers and trees. A two hour kayaking trip at nearby Jupiter Outdoor Center is included. There are lots of Florida attractions just a short drive away.

Go, Do, See Gulf State Park Varied outdoor offerings, from biking to sailing to fishing, make this a perfect extended weekend getaway for the outdoorsman or nature enthusiast. Restaurants highlight fresh Gulf seafood, but this is also the season when food takes center stage at some of the towns’ most celebrated festivals. Though you won’t see as many families vacationing at the beach now because kids are in school, these destinations are suitable for everyone who’s a kid at heart, no matter what year is printed on their birth certificate. And when it’s time to rest after a busy day of fun, these coastal communities provide a full range of lodging options, from condos to hotels to eco-lodges. Eagle Cottages at Gulf State Park became the seventh United States property to join National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World program this summer. It’s one of only 55 such lodges in the world to achieve this status, which is a way of allowing visitors to discover special places around the globe while helping to protect these areas for future generations. Eagle Cottages is a collection of 11 properties within the state park, which regularly earns accolades for its commitment to sustainable practices and educating its guests about local wildlife and ecosystems. Gulf State Park has also debuted a unique new bike-share program that gives visitors yet another way to explore the park’s 28 miles of bike trails. The program launched at the beginning of last year with 50 bikes, and 150 more on the way. -12- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ January, 2020

They’re single-speed units with solar-powered locks that can be undone via an app. Bikes are free for the first three hours of use and then $5 per hour. The bike-share program is open to all park visitors ages 16 and over, but they must bring their own helmets. Bikes can only be used within the park but can be picked up and dropped off at several locations. Family-operated Reel Surprise Charters specializes in taking

people out for memorable fishing trips, from shorter inshore experiences to overnight adventures offshore. The 97-foot Gulf Craft can accommodate up to 62 guests. A complete galley plus liquor and food and beverage licenses means this boat is available for shared fishing trips (starting at $95 for anglers and $40 for those just wanting to go out on the water).

Arizona Grand Resort & Spa In the midst of a tropical escape...

(Excerpt form original article featured in the September, 2019 issue. ) “We stayed at a resort in Arizona that had a water park on site for my youngest, if there is a pool - he is happy. The Arizona Grand Resort & Spa https://www. arizonagrandresort.com in Phoenix is an amazing place to take the family. The water park has water slides, lazy rivers, & wave pools. There are also several pools located around the property and a golf course. I basically only saw my kids when they were hungry which was fine with me. We also drove through Sedona which was just beautiful. We also stopped and saw the Grand Canyon - It was breath-taking. Absolutely stunning. In the souvenir shop there is a book (a HUGE book) of all the people who have fallen and died at the Grand Canyon. Leave it to my kids to want to get

as close as possible to the edge - I will say that my nerves were shot by the time we left. We missed the train tour, it only runs twice a day and that will be something we make plans to do if we go that way again.” Nestled at the base of America’s largest urban park and wilderness preserve, Arizona’s only AAA Four Diamond all-suite resort features spacious one and two-bedroom suites. Allegany County Allegany County, The Mountain Side of Maryland: Today it’s known for outdoor offerings from hiking to biking, but back in the day Allegany County was a transportation hub for not just the East Coast, but the entire nation. These days you can cycle along the historic C&O Canal towpath, which ends in the town of Cumberland, or take a road trip along the National Road, Offering 60,000 acres of public land and endless amounts of outdoor adventure, Allegany County’s Mountain Maryland is a beautiful place to explore during the winter. The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile, nearly level rail-trail that connects Cumberland, Maryland, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The “GAP” features spectacular views of this part of the country for much of the year. Riders along the trail can check out dozens of iconic views and structures, including Mile Marker 0 in Cumberland (the location where the Great Allegheny Passage meets the historic C&O Canal Towpath National Park that leads to Washington, DC, 184 miles to the east), the fossil-filled Bone Cave (where The Smithsonian Institution conducted an excavation between 1912 and 1916), the Mason-Dixon Line and much more. Holidaymakers from across the globe have been contacting top-tier vacation ranches hoping to replicate the lifestyle they see on Yellowstone. In fact, according to the owners of area ranches, vacationers have even requested to be called the names of Yellowstone characters during their stay. The Ranch at Rock Creek, located in the heart of Western Montana, is the world’s only Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star ranch and a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World in the United States.

Originally a working ranch homesteaded in the early 1900’s, owner Jim Manley opened it as an all-inclusive guest ranch in 2010. Set among 10 square miles of rugged Montana ranchland, the ranch offers guests over 30 outdoor recreational activities, and dozens of unique accommodations featuring four different styles (lodge rooms, canvas cabins, historic barn and luxury homes), memorable ranch cuisine, and a full-service spa. The Ranch merges authentic mountain elements with premium amenities. You may choose to experience Montana under a canvas ceiling inside their Canvas Cabins, beneath an aspen canopy bed in the Granite Lodge, or in front of a stone fireplace in a private home. Families, couples and friends will discover that The Ranch at Rock Creek is a special place that offers the best of America’s “true West” without sacrificing true comfort.

Mt. Hood

As Oregon’s grandest peak, Mt. Hood is home to three incredible and diverse ski resorts. Timberline Lodge & Ski Area is the only ski-in, ski-out lodge in the state, Mt. Hood Meadows offers more than 2,150 acres of skiing and Mt. Hood Skibowl has the largest night skiing terrain in the U.S. Ski with locals, enjoy a beer at a craft brewery, spend the night in a mountain resort, follow snowshoe trails through old growth forests and experience what makes Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory a truly special place. Mt. Hood Skibowl expanded their night ski terrain with the addition of two new lit runs, bringing the total to 36. The new lights allow visitors to now ski from the top of Upper Bowl all the way to the bottom of the hill. They have also expanded snowmaking capacity farther up the mountain on Lower Bowl, helping the resort build a base of snow in two locations now. In an effort to improve the experience and better manage

crowds during peak ski season, Mt. Hood Meadows has implemented a new ticket pricing system. Similar to how airline ticket pricing works, the demand for lift tickets will dictate the prices. To make sure the runs are in perfect condition, Mt. Hood Meadows purchased a pair of new snow grooming machines. As a National Historic Landmark, Timberline Lodge & Ski Area is still being used for its original intent – a magnificent ski lodge and mountain retreat for everyone to enjoy. The resort’s operator recently expanded that history with the purchase of Summit Ski Area, the second-oldest continually operating ski area in the U.S. Summit is an ideal location to get the basics of skiing or snowboarding down before heading up to more challenging runs at Timberline. There are plenty of snowy adventures for non-skiers and boarders, too. Mt. Hood Outfitters is the leading recreational outfitter and

guide service for Mt. Hood. All tours are interpretive, as guests learn about the area’s history, geology, cultures and animals. Accomplished and friendly guides lead unforgettable adventures for visitors of all experience levels. In addition to snowmobile, snowshoe and cross-country ski tours, Mt. Hood Outfitters offers gear rentals for adventurers who prefer to head out on their own. For those who want to hit the slopes in a different fashion, Cosmic Tubing at Mt. Hood Skibowl is the best party on the mountain. Enjoy more than 600,000 LED lights, laser light shows, black lights, colored lights and rocking music all while tubing. This is great fun for the whole family, including kids. Visit mthoodterritory.com/ places-to-stay for more lodging options.

The Ski Lodges

CHARLESTON — Snowshoe Mountain Resort welcomes skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes, marking the ski season in West Virginia. Snowshoe will offer skiers and snowboarders 42 acres of available terrain, including 11 trails and three lifts this season. The resort sits 4,848 feet above sea level and averages more than 180 inches of annual snowfall. Canaan Valley Ski Resort, Oglebay Resort and Winterplace Ski Resort are have also opened their slopes. “West Virginia is a true four-season travel destination, and I’m thrilled to see our winter season underway,” Gov. Jim Justice said. “West Virginia’s natural beauty during the winter is unmatched, and we have some of the best ski resorts and seasonal recreation along the East Coast.” West Virginia ski resorts host more than 800,000 skier visits annually, according to the West Virginia Ski Areas Association. “Ski season is a great way to bring people to see the snow-covered beauty of Almost Heaven and show them how to experience winter the right way, in the perfect place,” Tourism Commissioner Chelsea Ruby said. “Winter travel in West Virginia is unlike anywhere else. Here, travelers can experience magical winter hikes, hit the slopes or cozy up in a mountainside cabin. The best part about winter in West Virginia? The warm southern hospitality you’ll receive throughout your entire stay.” Recent temperatures across West Virginia have -58- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ January, 2020

been cold enough for snowmaking operations to begin. When snowmaking conditions are at their best, more than 20,000 tons of snow are produced in West Virginia per hour. While this area has steep slopes for those looking for high adventure, it’s also a great state to learn to ski. For years, youth groups and families have come to teach children the skills needed for these popular snow sports. The West Virginia Tourism Office, in conjunction with members of the ski industry, are now working to spread that message far and wide to attract new travelers to the mountains of West Virginia. The West Virginia Ski Areas Association announced a new program for the 2019/2020 season that will allow any child in the 4th or 5th grade to learn to ski or snowboard free of cost. All of West Virginia’s ski areas are participating in the Ski Free 4th and 5th Grade Passport Program. The Passport may be used to obtain one child’s first-time ski/ snowboard package (beginner lift, lesson and rental package) at a participating resort and up to an additional three junior lift tickets during the season. Ski and snowboard season in West Virginia traditionally occurs through April. For more information, visit www.WVtourism.com/Winter.
