Up Close: From the Editor Since this month’s editorial topic is focusing on all things new this year - firsts, trends, openings, expansions - I decided now is also a great time to share what’s new for us in the offices of the Extended Weekend Getaways Family. For the most part, it’s the titles that have been rearranged or renamed. First of all, Mr. Norm Reed has been with the founding company since before this publication was launched. Formerly a local newspaper tab and then syndicated to other weekly newspapers, Norm was the computer technician and saved our deadlines more than once. He has been the supporting factor in the growth and expansion to what it is today and only fair to bestow the title of “Managing Editor” to him as I move on to Editor -In-Chief. Our rolls will mostly remain the same, but Norm will take a more active part in our editorial, layout, and sales direction. My job will be split between editorial and sales training as we welcome new members, Jacob and Leighann LeMaster, to our marketing department. They are both journalists and will also be contributing to the editorial department. Our things-to-do-editor is now our “everything” editor with the new title “Let’s Go, Do, See Editor.” We believe it takes all three to bring you a well-rounded travel extended weekend getaway article. Next, our regular contributor Robin O’Neal Smith, will continue to share those articles as she also takes on the roll of associate editor. Her main job? Keep me organized. Last, but certainly not least, Mr. David Derdin has served the past year as a project director and now takes on the responsibilities as publisher. With these new titles, various responsbilities will be shared as you we introduce new destinations, attractions and adventures as our main focus will continue to be sharing our client’s stories with you Kathy Barnett, our readers. Happy New Year! Managing Editor May it begin...NOW! January, 2024~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -5-

Travel Trends

Just What Are The Trave By Robin O’Neal Smith Associate Editor https://RobinOnealSmith.com

Travel is alive and well again! Marriott International in the Caribbean and Latin America reports that travel is a priority, with 77% of respondents to a recent survey saying that travel will be a personal budget priority in 2024. This is excellent news for an industry that suffered during the pandemic. The following trends are expected to shape the travel industry and influence travelers’ choices in the upcoming year.

Health and Wellness

Wellness travel: The wellness travel industry has steadily grown in recent years and shows no signs of slowing down. As the importance of mental and physical health continues to gain recognition, wellness travel is becoming a top priority for many travelers. Kathryn Anderson, Health Coach and Blogger, shared, “I see Wellness Travel continuing to be a trend for 2024. As more people realize the importance of self-care and taking time for -6- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

themselves, they will seek out retreats and destinations that promote well-being. Travel will shift away from just ticking off destinations and move towards creating memories that nourish your soul. With this shift, vacations become about hitting the reset button. They become a way to recharge, destress, and find balance. After all, isn’t that what a vacation should be?”

to travel in 2024 is to rest and recharge.

According to new research from Hilton, travelers plan to relax and invest in their sleep. Regardless of their generation, the top reason people want

Digital Detox And Unplugged Vacations: In an increasingly digital world, travelers desire to disconnect and take a break from technology.

Nature Focused: “Nature-focused wellness offerings are gaining more popularity and are predicted to be a major trend for 2024,” stated Lindsey Steck Jackson from Pensacola. Forest bathing, sound baths, and cold plunges are becoming more popular.

el Trends For 2024? This trend is expected to continue in 2024, with more people opting for unplugged vacations to relax and recharge. Solo Travel: Traveling solo has been on the rise recently, and this trend will continue in 2024. More people are embracing the freedom and personal growth of traveling alone, making it a top trend for the future. Dry Tripping: Zero-proof holidays are expected to increase. Travelers are interested in easily accessible alcohol-free options such as mocktails.

Set Jetting

People visit places they’ve seen in movies and TV shows. Kate Bussman for Expedia shared, “Over the past 12 months, Set-Jetting has increased with nearly 30% of travelers* now saying that TV shows and movies are more influential than before. TV shows are more of a draw for destinations than social media, with breathtaking landscapes and outdoorsy locations generating the most interest, followed by lesser-known locales and beaches." Karolina Turowska of photoAiD shared info from their

survey of 1000 Americans that “78% are likely or very likely to opt for TV or Movie-themed trips.” I recently visited Torrance, California, which sees many visitors because it was a filming location for Buffy and the Vampire Slayers. The Westin Poinsett Hotel in Greenville, SC, recreated experiences from the Holiday Movie, “Home Alone.” (I wrote about this fun experience in the Dec. edition of Extended Weekend Getaways.)

The Foodie Scene

Food has always been a significant aspect of travel, but it has become a primary mo-

tivation for many travelers in recent years. In 2022, culinary tourism rose to $805.9 billion worldwide. Most people are willing to splurge on a fantastic meal. I know I have done it many times. January, 2024~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -7-

In 2024, we can expect more people seeking authentic culinary experiences, from food tours to cooking classes with local chefs. Lindsey Steck Jackson from Pensacola reports, “Culinary offerings will continue to play a big factor in travel decisions in 2024, with an emphasis on wine, beer, and spirit offerings. The concept of the “No Menu” Menu is also an emerging trend for 2024.” Other rising food-related trends include No-Frills Wine Tasting, Traveling With Chefs, Dining With Locals, Mocktails, and Foodie Field Trips.

Agritourism

As people become more interested in where their food and drink come from, agritourism is gaining popularity. Colleen O’Neill Mulvihill of www.AgritourismTravel. com stated, “Across the globe, farmers are working tirelessly to feed our planet. In many cases, farms have had to find additional sources of income or find ways to create a tighter bond with the community they serve and beyond. By staying at their farm or purchasing products directly, you can help support the growing agritourism travel industry." Many farms allow visitors to help with chores such as -8- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

feeding the animals or gathering eggs for breakfast. It’s a great way to teach children where their food comes from while introducing parents to a more meaningful travel experience.

Regenerative Tourism

We’ve heard of Eco-tourism and choosing to travel with sustainability in mind. This trend will continue as travelers become aware of their carbon footprint and seek eco-friendly accommodations, transportation options, and activities. With the rising demand for eco-conscious options among travelers, the emphasis is broadening from solely environmental sustainability to making meaningful contributions to local communities and ecosystems.

Bleisure Bliss

Mixing business with plea-

sure is increasing. Lindsey Steck Jackson from Pensacola says, “With business travelers adding additional days to their visit to a destination ahead of, or following, their business trip dates, bleisure travel continues to grow."

Adventure travel

Adrenaline-fueled adventures have become increasingly popular. In 2024, travelers will continue seeking unique and thrilling experiences, such as hiking through remote landscapes or participating in extreme sports like zorbing.

Other Trends On The Rise

Go-ccasions - When people travel together for special events. “Puppymoons” and “Special Occasion Trips” are in the cards for travelers. VRBO research shows that

one-third of respondents plan to take more trips in 2024, and groups are finding exciting reasons to travel and celebrate. Hotel Vibe: The atmosphere of the hotel. “People want hotels that contribute to an overall uplifting travel experience.” according to Courtney Haywood, Director of PR for the Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau. Guests are seeking stays that set the tone for their entire trip. Destination Dupes: More affordable alternatives to popular destinations. These destinations usually offer cost savings and are less crowded.

Historical Attractions: Many people travel to learn more about history. This trend will continue to increase as new historical attractions are created. Micro-trips: With busy schedules and limited vacation time, the trend of micro-trips will increase in 2024. These short trips allow travelers to take multiple vacations throughout the year without simultaneously using all their allotted vacation days. Multigenerational Travel: As families spread across different parts of the world, multigenerational travel is becoming increasingly popular. In 2024, we can expect to see more families traveling

together and creating unforgettable memories with their loved ones. Technology-based Travel: In today’s digital age, technology plays a significant role in travel. From booking flights and accommodations online to using navigation apps while exploring a new destination, technology has made travel more convenient and accessible. Additional trends that continue are Accessibility, Soft Travel, and Outdoor Amenities. 2024 promises to be an interesting year in travel. During the next 11 months, we will focus on one or two trends each month, including destinations that offer these experiences.

Dave’s Cheesesteaks Defi

ATLANTA - Big Dave’s was founded by entrepreneur Derrick Hayes (fun fact: he is engaged to fellow restauranter & Slutty Vegan visionary Pinky Cole) & is an award-winning concept offering unique, mouth-watering takes on the classics from his hometown of Philadelphia. The brand is rooted with humble beginnings (it first started as a small venture in a Dunwoody, Ga gas station!) and has since expanded into a multi-million dollar empire with 3 Georgia locations, a food truck and multiple units in Atlanta’s famed Mercedes-Benz stadium. for its iconically known items like West Philly-style cheesesteaks served on traditional amoroso rolls, Philly fries smothered with your favorite cheesesteak toppings and the more uniquely popular handrolled cheesesteak egg rolls loaded with onions, three cheeses and a choice of beef, chicken or salmon.

um, Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks serves mouth-watering flavors straight from founder Derrick Hayes’ hometown of Philly in the form of beef, chicken and salmon cheesesteaks for all to enjoy. Regularly generating lines around the block, the brand is one of the fastest-growing businesses in the Southeast.

Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks in Atlanta offers a unique take on Philadelphia classics from cheesesteaks to cheesesteak egg rolls. With locations in Atlanta and neighboring Doraville, GA, a food truck and multiple units in the city’s famed Mercedes-Benz stadi-

finitely Has Philly Roots vowed to turn his life around right then and there. Stemming from childhood memories of time spent in the kitchen with his grandfather, he became hooked on the idea of selling cheesesteaks and water ice, and clung to the idea of bringing the real taste of his Philly roots to Atlanta. After months of refusals from business owners all disinterested in leasing him a space, Derrick found a 700-squarefoot space within a Dunwoody Shell gas station where he could finally build his dream from the ground up. Following the buildout and after months of withstanding little to no customer foot traffic, rapper, actress & fellow Philadelphia native Eve stumbled in while in town for a project, posted a photo on social media, and the rest was history. As luck would have it, locals and celebrities began to line up around the block to try the now-famous Philly subs. Since then, Big Dave’s has soared to success and was ranked as one of the 2018 World Food Championship’s “Top 10” Best Sandwiches. A self-made entrepreneur, restaurateur and philanthropist, Derrick has been nationally recognized by Forbes, Good Morning America, Black Enterprise, RevoltTV,

People Magazine, Red Table Talk and many more. In 2021 he was named to the Forbes Next 1000 list, and even graced the cover of Essence Magazine with Pinky Cole. THE MENU Anchored by the cheesesteaks that started it all, Big Dave’s offers a counter-service menu of beef, chicken and salmon cheesesteaks, Philly fries smothered with your favorite cheesesteak toppings, hand-rolled egg rolls, a selection of wings, salads and water ice beverages – a Philly original.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Although the concept solidified its roaring success within Atlanta’s culinary scene through its mouth-watering food, the Black-owned business is dually committed to

actively participating in uplifting its community. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, the restaurant distributed free meals to healthcare heroes and went as far as providing face masks and other medical supplies to neighboring hospitals in the area. As an extension of the brand’s community commitment, founder & CEO Derrick Hayes established the David & Derrick Hayes Foundation – a foundation honoring Derrick’s father in support of early detection and cancer research, the David & Derrick Hayes College Fund that provides quarterly funding to deserving students with a 3.0 GPA or higher, and Square 1: The Liife Experience – a program Derrick founded with his fiance Pinky Cole (founder of the wildly successful Slutty Vegan) with an initiative to provide 25,000 Black men across the nation with full access and awareness to life insurance to support their health and generate generational wealth within the black community.

Life Is Full Of Firsts From our very first breath we begin to accumulate first experiences. I find it sad whenever someone stops trying new things. I like traditions and routines; they serve a very important purpose in life. But there is no point in becoming stagnant when wonderful opportunities abound to become involved in something new. You might find it to be worth repeating as a new favorite or simply a once in a lifetime memory. Perhaps a new hobby is needed or travel to a new place. In spite of the many times I’ve heard someone say they are ‘too old’ to try something, I’m not convinced yet. A dear friend of my family decided to take music lessons when in her forties. One of my relatives learned to drive when in her early fifties. True, these are not the usual ages for such, but I still admire them for deciding what they wanted and not letting anything stop them. I have a not-so-secret desire to learn I don’t have that talent. However, over the how to play a new musical instrument. but hardly interchangeable in recipes. My mentor within the team was an experienced cook with a collection of some very interesting recipes. She suggested we make Fish Chowder. This presented a new problem because of the breading on the fish sticks. Never wanting to waste food, and being long on volunteer labor, the decision was made to ‘peel’ the fish sticks. The result? Excellent chowder!

FISH CHOWDER

sure to share it with you. Until then, here’s an excerpt from my very first article, written over twenty years ago. If the shoe fits . . . If at first you don’t succeed . . . If you have fish sticks . . . The second half of the first two sentences is well-known, if not downright obvious. The third one, however, is not so easy to complete. This is especially true if you never asked for fish sticks in the first place. As a member of a disaster relief team, I have learned how important it is to be flexible. For instance, in this situation, we ordered canned tuna. We received fish sticks. Both are good,

2-3 lbs. white fish, cut into cubes (may substitute chicken breast, turkey or lean pork) 5 or 6 stalks celery, chopped 1 stick margarine 2 medium onions, chopped 1 tsp. salt and pepper to taste 2 cans chicken broth 1 package carrots, sliced thin 4 – 5 potatoes, sliced thin 1 to 1 ½ gallons milk (use some ½ and ½ for extra flavor) 2 cans cream style corn 3 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese (cubed) Place first four ingredients in large stewpot. Cook until vegetables are soft. Add the next four listed ingredients. Cook until Vegetables are tender. (A one gallon can mixed vegetables may be substituted for the carrots and potatoes.) Add milk and corn. Cook until well-heated. Add cream cheese. Cook until melted and blended. Add instant mashed potatoes to desired thickness. Optional seasonings: garlic, parsley flakes and basil. Serves approximately 25. So, if the shoe fits, wear it. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. And if you have fish sticks, make chowder! January, 2024~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -23-

The Best Solar Eclipse By Laurie Wilson Freelance Writer The 2024 solar eclipse is anticipated to be an epic mass travel event—an impactful celestial experience that is expected to be witnessed by millions. On April 8, 2024, the duration of totality will be up to four minutes and 27 seconds, almost double that of The Great American Eclipse of August 2017, which was viewed by more than 20 million people from Oregon to South Carolina. In the U.S., totality will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT. Several New England states have bragging rights to lying in the path of totality (and some just outside of the path with deep partial totality) and they’ll be offering star-studded events, amenities and packages—as well as quietude and dark skies for optimal viewing. Here is a sampling of some of the best spots to watch the moon-and-sun eclipse duet in New England.

MAINE

-26- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

The Pine Tree State will have a front row seat to witness the spectacle. Maine is expecting a surge of out-of-state and in-state

eclipse-chaser visitors—in fact, some rural spots, like Houlton, Jackman and Greenville, have been planning since 2021, like Houlton’s tours of the renowned to-scale solar system which runs along Route 1. The Maine Office of Tourism will provide visitors with solar eclipse glasses. Www.visitmaine.com Here are some other ideas.

Rangeley At 3:29pm, the sun will be completely obscured over Rangeley, and The Rangeley Inn & Tavern, tucked in the heart of Maine’s lakes and mountains, is offering a Solar Eclipse Vacation Package. The package includes breakfast, and the eclipse will also be live-streamed for guests to watch in the hotel’s banquet

Views In New England room. Also, an Eclipse Party will take place (hors d’oeuvres, live music, cash bar). Millinocket This village in northern Maine is in the path of totality. Runners alert: The “Millinockeclipse” road race gets going at 2:20:53 pm—exactly when the total eclipse begins (runners will be required to wear headlamps for safety.)

Resort on Ocean Avenue will welcome guests to gather on the front lawn for the big event— expect themed cocktails and canapés, guided sound bathing and meditation, journaling and, later, a calming turn-down service for sweet celestial dreams.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Portland While this foodie town won’t experience the total eclipse of the sun, it will experience a deep partial which is significant. So, for those who don’t want to travel way up north in Maine, here are some ideas in Portland, about an hour and a half outside of Boston. Inn by the Sea Outside the environs of downtown Portland, but only 20 minutes away, the skies are dark in Cape Elizabeth, and perfect for eclipse viewing at this seaside resort. The inn is a steward of the natural environment and is a member of Beyond Green, a collection of 40 curated hotels in 18 countries with the distinction of being the most sustainable on the planet—and the inn has a partnership with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (translation: you don’t arrive with a dog, you might leave with one, the best souvenir ever.) The three-night Green to Gold package includes two nights in a luxury suite, daily breakfast, three-course dinner, beach ecology walk, food walking tour through Portland’s Old Port district and lobster boat trip in Casco Bay. Kennebunkport Is not in the path of totality, but it’s a shining star in Maine and will experience a deep partial eclipse. Cape Arundel Inn &

Pre-gaming will happen on the evening of April 7 at The Wentworth in Jackson, with a meet-and-greet with Paul Winalski, astrologer and secretary of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society—Winalski will also stick around to guide guests through the eclipse viewing. The eclipse is expected to be viewable in 99.15 percent totality around 3:30:01 pM. The main event on the 8th: An eclipse viewing reception from noon to 4pm with discussions and two telescopes to view the preeclipse in a safe manner. Chairs and roaring fire pits on Alpine Terrace will be set-up for prime viewing and a lunar signature cocktail, themed desserts and small bites representing the areas close to the equator will be served. The Wentworth’s Eclipse Package includes two-night accommodations, daily breakfast for two, $50 resort credit, eclipse eyewear and pre-eclipse and eclipse activities

VERMONT

Burlington is a lucky totality spot. This lovely city in Northern Vermont will experience a total eclipse of the sun for three minutes and sixteen seconds. Hotel Vermont Burlington will have special programming and packages including complimentary eclipse glasses, a viewing party and tie-in cocktail specials. Also, a speaker session is being planned. And, the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain’s Total Eclipse of the Heart will shine with ‘80s nostalgia—dancing, food, themed cocktails and an ‘80s swag gift bag. Stowe is located in the path of totality and Stowe Mountain Resort and is throwing a Solar Eclipse Soirée. The ticketed event will take

place at the Cliff House restaurant—guests can experience the eclipse from Vermont’s highest peak—and includes gondola access, admission to a private viewing, tasting menu, commemorative gift and champagne toast. Topnotch Resort in Stowe is offering a threenight package, including ten-percent discount on rates and private five-course dinner/wine pairing event at Flannel restaurant following the eclipse. Also, guests will receive a custom solar eclipse tote bag amenity and solar eclipse glasses. Located in small town Chittenden in Central Vermont, the private 700-acre Mountain Top Resort with views of the Green Mountains has a two-night stay eclipse package from Sunday to Tuesday that includes a three-course dinner for two and resort amenities (that are open during that time of year, weather dependent). Expect a celestial solar celebration at the historic Woodstock Inn and Resort in Woodstock. The three-day weekend will feature celestial cocktails and culinary specials and “crafternoons” with eclipse-themed crafts and science projects for the kiddos. On Monday afternoon, a Total Eclipse Tea Party will be held to watch the eclipse; viewing glasses will also be available.

RHODE ISLAND

HBO Max’s Gilded Age has put this glamorous coastal spot on the radar for glam and bling. And no doubt the eclipse will be a mood here. Newport will experience a deep partial 90.7 percent of the eclipse. And is there anything more magical than experiencing an eclipse by the water? The town will be busy with eclipse chasers who will also love the opportunities to get out on the water to experience the magic. These spots are perfect for eclipse weekend stays. Guests are pampered at The Chanler at Cliff Walk, sitting pretty on the much-celebrated Cliff Walk which hugs the sea and also embraces the hotel—just steps away. The location couldn’t be better to experience a seaside eclipse. Mill Street Inn A former mill-turned-inn with a plum in-town location, you’ll want to book a room with a gas fireplace (it’s still chilly in this neck of the woods in early April) and a deck to spy the stars—and that eclipse—over picturesque Newport. The Brenton A perfect in-town location, and with water views from some of the lovely guestrooms, the modern hotel has all the fixings to take in the eclipse—book a balcony room to enhance the eclipse experience over the water. The Bayberry The classic look of a perfect New England inn, with that requisite porch for eclipse watching and cocktails—guests enjoy daily gourmet breakfast, too.

CONNECTICUT

While The Nutmeg State won’t see a total eclipse of the sun, the partial eclipse at 90-plus percent will be significant enough that visitors will gather to celebrate in Olde Mystick Village that weekend. Happy campers can stay at the Mystic KOA Holiday for the eclipse weekend which will include activities like a Friday night movie and a pinhole viewing box activity. If you’re not into camping, there are other starry stay options nearby. Hilton Mystic is located across from the Mystic Aquarium, making it a fun and convenient spot for families. The hotel’s courtyard fire pit is a nice spot to gather posteclipse for cocktails, and the hotel is located a mile from the festivities at Olde Mistick Village. The darling town of Stonington Borough is home to the Inn at Stonington, which sits on the pretty harbor—ideal spot to witness the eclipse. Some guest rooms have Jacuzzis and fireplaces and balconies—for private eclipse viewing. Just when you didn’t think nearby Essex could be any more charming, there’s The Griswold Inn, one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the country, with an in-town location and steps from the banks of the Connecticut River. The eclipse will be a deep partial at 91.4 percent. The gas fireplaces in guest rooms set the cozy scene, the lack of TVs in guest rooms complete it. There are several dining spots, including the popular Tap Room and Wine Bar, which will outshine all others that weekend.

A Midwinter Road Trip “Courage--judgment--integrity--dedication-these are the historic qualities of the Bay Colony and the Bay State.” John Kennedy

By Renée Gordon History Travel Writer Massachusetts, filled with natural, cultural and historic marvels, is worthy of wandering in every season. The humid continental climate ensures four distinct seasons with long winters and shorter summers. From the first settlements, the economy was driven by the climate. Because the growing season was briefer than average, the colonists concentrated on the fur trade, lumber and subsistence farming. From these commonalities settlements began to develop based on their population, belief systems and skills. Springfield began as a settlement on the shore of the Connecticut River in 1636 and the river quickly emerged as the main traders’ “highway” bearing goods both upstream and downstream. Two rivers fed into the Connecticut creating a river transit intersection that, coupled with the Boston Post Road, made Springfield as a significant transportation hub. The last years of the 1600s witnessed the onset of the industrial revolution as mills were established along waterways and the area became known for its gunsmiths and John Pynchon founded an iron works in 1697. Springfield, from its inception, was a city of creativity, innovation, skilled industry and diversity. Springfield Arsenal was established by George Washington and the Continental Government in 1777. It was

designated an armory in 1794. They produced army weapons from muskets to M1 rifles until it closed in 1968. A later 1847 armory on the campus of Springfield Technical Community College showcases the world’s largest collection of historic American military firearms. An African American Heritage Trail exemplifies the city’s stance on and involvement with the question of slavery. Because of access to water, rail and road transportation Springfield was a haven for

fugitive slaves. It is estimated that there were as many as 20 underground railroad stops. John Brown moved there in 1846 and it is there that he first met with Frederick Douglass in 1847. The 1850 Fugitive Slave Act caused some of the 250 blacks living there to move to Canada and moved others to become resistant when confronted by slave hunters. Top 3 Spots for 2024 Niagara Falls

#1 top destination for places to visit The tumbling, frothy falls – more than 3,100 tons of water flows over the edge every second – are the star tourist attraction in this New York destination that borders Canada. The best way to see Niagara Falls is on a Maid of the Mist boat tour, which takes poncho-clad visitors on an electric tour boat to the base of the falls. Or, more daring visitors can experience this natural wonder on a thrilling whirlpool jet boat tour. Just don’t forget to check out the area’s other unforgettable attractions, such as Niagara Falls State Park’s hiking trails, Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens & Butterfly Conservatory or the nearby casinos.

Adirondacks

#2 best place to visit. The Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York span roughly 6 million acres and are home to hundreds of communities, lakes, valleys and trails. Water lovers can canoe or kayak on Saranac Lake or go boating on Tupper Lake; hikers can tackle the area’s 2,000-plus miles of trails; and skiers can shred powder on Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid. Visitors will also want to save some time for checking out history-focused sights like the Lake Placid Olympic Museum and Fort Ticonderoga, as well as sampling regional beverages at local wineries and breweries. Thousand Islands

#3 best place to visit in in 2024 Despite its name, the Thousand Islands region is composed of more than 1,800 islands. The best way to see this vast area, which also stretches into Canada, is during an open-air boat tour. A scenic cruise here will take you past lighthouses,

mansions and castles and include commentary about the real-life pirates who used to roam the islands’ waters and the Gilded Age magnates who once called the region home. When you’re ready to return to land, hike the trails in Wellesley Island State Park or fish in Mary Island State Park, both on Wellesley Island. January, 2024~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -37-

Meet Glendale Phoenix's Not So Little Brother

Phoenix continues to rise from the dusty desert, thanks to air conditioning and 300 sunny days a year. As the most populous city capital in the United States, Phoenix is also a busy hub for snowbirds nesting or tourists escaping winter for sunshine. While Phoenix might be rising, the west suburb of Glendale is exploding. For decades now, we’ve visited my in-laws who retired to Arizona, just west of Phoenix. It used to be that the west side was the sleepier side, a cowboy and cactus country sprinkled with retirement communities. Not anymore, Phoenix has spread its wings east to west. That expansion is most evident in Glendale. Tourism ballooned when Cardinal Stadium, part of the National Football League, was built in 2006. From there, we saw Westgate Entertainment District pop up with shopping, enter-

An exotic Caribbean-blue water beach stretches around a 60-acre resort oasis in Glendale, Arizona. Is it just a mirage? It’s real. Currently under construction, VAI Resort is slated to open in late 2024. VAI is modern, mammoth in size, and has a Vegas meets Miami-style luxury vibe. This too is part of the Westgate Entertainment District, right next door to the movie theater. Diners and pickle players can find ample space to congregate for friendly competition or some laid-back lawn games. Wood-fired rotisserie chicken, burgers and brews, plus you guessed it–fried pickles– are just a few of the chef-driven choices. Between all the centrally-located entertainment, you can easily spend an extended weekend or longer just exploring Glendale. January, 2024~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -45-

More on California HERE

What’s New This Wi

Norman Reed Managing Editor With resorts reporting staggering seasonal snowfall last year and hosting skiers for 275 days, weekenders are eagerly anticipating another epic season for this year. Mike Reitzell, president of Ski California, shares insights into the upcoming season: “Last winter, California resorts experienced their second snowiest season on record, and almost 8.3 million skiers and riders took to the slopes. Skiing and snowboarding were incredibly popular, and the tremendous snow conditions only added to the experience.” California’s ski resorts are promising some fresh and new adventures to explore. However, before setting plans in stone, make sure to check your chosem resort website for the latest updates on current snow conditions. As the resorts prepare for another exciting winter, they’re not only relying on Mother Nature but are also enhancing the visitor experience. From new high-capacity chairlifts to revamped restaurants, upgraded grooming and snowmaking equipment, and enticing off-mountain activities, there’s plenty to look forward to. One notable change this season is the introduction of a parking reservation system for Tahoe skiers and riders heading to Palisades Tahoe, Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood on weekends and holidays. While weekdays offer more flexibility, the weekend and holiday reservation system aims to spread out arrival times, -46- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

reducing traffic congestion on mountain roads. According to Reitzell, “There’s no longer any need to rush to arrive at the resort by 8 o’clock in the morning. Skiers can show up for a 10 a.m. reservation and know they have a reserved parking spot. That should alleviate traffic problems that were caused by everyone trying to get to the resort at the same time.” The reservation system brings advantages for resort-goers, offering flexibility in arrival times and even free reservations for cars with four or more occupants on weekends and holidays. Now, let’s take a sneak peek at the exciting changes, upgrades, and improvements at 10 California ski resorts:

June Mountain, June Lake:

This family-focused resort adds two adven-

Mammoth Mountain, Mammoth Lakes:

California’s highest resort is replacing its aging Canyon Express with a high-speed six-seater lift, reducing wait times. A $5.5 million investment is expanding and automating the snowmaking system, and non-skiers can enjoy the new ice rink at Mammoth Creek Park and an alpine coaster at Woolly’s Tube Park.

Palisades Tahoe, Olympic Valley:

With over $6 million in snowmaking infrastructure upgrades, Palisades Tahoe promises better snow all season. The resort also introduces a high-speed, six-seater lift to replace the Red Dog chairlift.

Northstar California, Truckee:

The Village at Northstar welcomes Vous, a new café/bar, and introduces mobile lift ticket technology on the My Epic app, allowing for a seamless experience from morning lattes to après-ski wine.

Heavenly, South Lake Tahoe:

Lakeview Lodge hosts the new Brews and Views après party, featuring food, music, and

beer tastings. The resort also adopts mobile lift ticket technology on the My Epic app for a hassle-free experience.

Sierra at Lake Tahoe, Echo Summit

Post-Caldor-Fire restoration brings new trails and expanded ski terrain, especially in forested areas like East Side and Avalanche Bowl.

Dodge Ridge, Pinecrest:

A new quad chair at the base area increases lift capacity by 30 percent, and Dodge Ridge joins the multi-resort Cali Pass, providing unlimited access to several resorts.

Mount Shasta Ski Park, McCloud:

Mount Shasta joins the Powder Alliance, offering skiers three days of free skiing at 21 Powder Alliance resorts across the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand with a Shasta season pass. Big Bear Mountain Resort, Big Bear Lake: Southern California’s largest ski area welcomes Snow Valley Ski Resort, completing $12 million in upgrades, including a renovated Laybacks Bar with a sun deck and improved snowmaking capabilities.

Bodies Of Work: Art & H

KETCHUM— Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) is pleased to announce Bodies of Work: Art & Healing, a group exhibition that features artwork by six contemporary artists who have used their artistic practice as a way of exploring and processing their own experience of medical illness and the experiences of others that will open to the public on Jan. 12, 2023, and will remain on view through March 23, 2024. Admission is free, and open to the public. The arts have long served as powerful medicine for both mind and body. At the beginning of the 20th century, tuberculosis patients at sanatoria often participated in structured arts and crafts programs. Wounded soldiers recuperating during World War II were taught “lap crafts,” such as beading and embroidery, as part of their medical therapy. And many artists have made their practices an essential part of their personal healing. “As we were planning for this exhibition, the Covid-19 pandemic was dominating headlines around the globe. I began asking how the arts can help us navigate the complex experience of what it is to be a medical patient facing serious illness in the 21st century – and how art can help us -50- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

heal from other kinds of social and emotional trauma,” said Courtney Gilbert, Sun Valley Museum of Art Curator. “I found that this was a question lots of artists were wrestling with in their work and identified artists for the exhibition who offer multiple ways of thinking about the topic.” Bodies of Work: Art and Healing features the artwork of six contemporary artists who have used their practices as a way of exploring and processing their own experience of medical illness, as well as the experiences of others. Working in a range of media and from widely varying points of view and experiences, these artists have made art as part of their own healing and to enable the healing of others.

Artists Katherine Shaughnessy and Heather Watkins have each made new work for the exhibition reflecting on their personal medical experiences. The exhibition includes Boise-based artist Katherine Shaughnessy’s Radiant Interlude, 20 works on wood panel made over 20 days of radiation treatment in 2021. Shaughnessy describes the work “as a way to meditate and work my way through the pain and uncertainty that is breast cancer.” In ew paintings and sculptures commissioned by SVMoA, Shaughnessy reflects on the recent cancer diagnoses of close friends and family members. Portland-based Heather Watkins’s Recordings are em-

broidered textile works the artist made while in waiting rooms of one kind or another and were inspired by her own experience of illness and treatment. Watkins writes, “This work records the labor of being (a) patient.” Made during the Covid-19 pandemic, her meditative Soundings works expand on the Recordings. In newly commissioned photographic prints, Watkins takes images of the versos of the Recordings and enlarges them to the size of medical x-rays. Knots and stray threads dot the surfaces of images resembling diagnostic scans and MRIs of the brain. Based in Los Angeles, Dylan Mortimer was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of 3 months. As an adult, Mortimer received two lung transplants and has spent much of his career making paintings and works on paper that depict lungs,

bronchial branches, DNA, scars and botanical imagery. He covers his works with glitter, “a stark contrast to a really ugly, nasty disease,” an act of hope in the face of illness. Estelle L. Roberge is a New Mexico artist who works with paint and collage. Regular walks and hikes in the landscapes near her home are central to her practice. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, she began making small collages daily as a way to process our collective trauma with the virus and her personal experience of lockdown and isolation. The exhibition includes a selection from Roberge’s The Book of Covid: Unbound. Bay Area painter Katherine Sherwood experienced a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 44 that left her paralyzed on her right side. She retrained herself to

Renée Stout, based in Washington, D.C., works in painting, sculpture and assemblage to explore social and political ideas, spirituality, traditional rituals of the African Diaspora and their continuing practice in modern America. The exhibition includes work Stout has made about healing traditions with African roots, full of references to herbs, roots and seeds used to treat all kinds of maladies for centuries.

Flying Viking and Draken Falls

The highlight of the 2023 season was the return of the log ride, Draken Falls. The beloved ride was a staple at the park from opening day in 1974 through Labor Day 2015. It was replaced in 2016 by the Monster roller coaster. Working with ride manufacturer Zamperla, Adventureland has been able to bring the beloved ride back better than ever. The ride will end with the same 40 foot drop, but will also include an aerial panoramic turnaround and an airtime hill. The new log ride will be even

better with the addition of Adventureland’s seventh roller coaster, Flying Viking. The coaster will be intertwined with the log ride, adding even more thrill to both rides. Climbing to a height of 50 feet, this coaster is perfect for Viking invaders from young kids to adults.

The Potato Patch

Hungry Vikings looking for something to eat will just need to look for the boat full of fries! The new Potato Patch will serve mouth watering fresh-cut French fries with a choice of topping including bacon and cheese. The park has even more exciting surprises for guests when it opens on Saturday, May 6. It’s going to be an exciting summer to visit Adventureland with a full line up of events including the Summer Concert Series, Celebrate America, Kids Fest, Oktoberfest, and Phantom Fall Fest.

The Highlands Celebrates 60 Years, The Midwest’s First Six-Person Bubble Lift, And Much More In 23/24 Season The Highlands located in Harbor Springs, Michigan, is preparing for a momentous winter season. The northern Michigan resort is celebrating its 60th year in business and coming full circle with lift innovation with the debut of Camelot 6, a six-person, high-speed Doppelmayr D-Line bubble chairlift, a first in the Midwest. The Highlands, formerly Boyne Highlands, had the world’s first bubble chairlift in the early 1960s. The resort has also invested significantly in snowmaking upgrades, expanded night skiing, and has several new dining options for the 23/24 season.

Camelot 6, a Midwest First

The Midwest’s first modern bubble lift, Camelot 6, offers guests unrivaled comfort, speed, energy efficiency, and safety. Passengers can ride in ultra-comfort thanks to the D-Line’s heated, extra wide, ergonomically designed seats with foot rests. A tinted, weatherproof bubble keeps riders warm and protected from elements while being whisked up the slopes at a swift 6m/s, the fastest in the Midwest. Beyond its comforts, the lift also boasts advanced safety features like the first fully automatic safety bar system in the U.S., including auto closing and auto opening mechanisms, plus auto locking, and a height-adjustable loading carpet conveyor, ideal for kids. Camelot 6 is expected to open early December. The Highlands Celebrates 60 Years This winter, The Highlands celebrates its 60th anniversary. Riverfront Adds More on

>HERE By Tim Trudell Travel Writer

Enjoy a game of ping pong or maybe relax gliding back-and-forth on a swing. How about roasting some marshmallows while gathered around a firepit? You can even nap on a hammock. All this and more can be had at Gene Leahy Mall at The Riverfront in Omaha. The downtown park is part of a major renovation of Omaha’s riverfront. From the Leahy park to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge crossing the Missouri River into Council Bluffs, Iowa, the riverfront features outdoor activities as well as a science center. It’s easy to spend an entire day exploring the area. Once a model of urban development, Gene Leahy Mall had grown stale over 50 years. Originally named Central Park, the entrance sloped down, below street level. It was renamed after former Mayor Gene Leahy, who saw the park as a way to revitalize downtown. From 13th Street on the western edge to 8th Street on the east, the park was in a small valley. Concrete steps at one end offered a spot for locals to enjoy lunch outdoors as they stepped away from their corporate digs for a few min-72- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

utes of nature among skyscrapers. A walking path featured sculptures and a four block-long canal, popular with ducks and geese. But, over the decades, the park lost its appeal to locals. Following its renovation, the Gene Leahy Mall reopened in 2022 as a street level attraction. A few minutes’ walk from the historic Old Market - home to dining and shopping options - the park features a walking trail taking you past contemporary art pieces, including a large head sculpture created by famed artist Jun Kaneko. Standing 16 feet tall and nine feet wide, the 6,000-lbs. feature anchors the eastern edge of the park. Walking along the canal, you may want to bring a coffee or other non-alcoholic drink and enjoy the view while sitting canalside on Adirondack chairs. The canal is a perfect spot to soak in a magnificent look at Omaha’s tall buildings.

New Meaning To Park While the new-look Gene Leahy Mall at The Riverfront features a small dog park and a spot for food trucks, classic holdovers include the Arch to the Solo Building - greeting visitors at the south entrance - and the ever-popular slides. Kids of all ages (yes, even adults) enjoy climbing the stairs and zipping down the slides. The Riverfront trail guides visitors to the Heartland of America Park, still home to a lake with its water fountain shooting 300 feet into the air. Enjoy a walk along the shoreline, as well as a gondola ride during summer months. Heartland Park features a bocce court and amphitheater for outdoor concerts. The park hosts festivals during the summer, such as Taste of Omaha, highlighting the area’s culinary scene.

ribbon; great for roller skating most of the year, and transformed to an ice skating rink during the winter. The Farnam Pier resembles a whale’s rib cage, with its arch guiding you to the river’s edge, where you can take in the views along the water or of the park. Continuing your exploration of the riverfront takes you to Lewis and Clark Landing. This area has enjoyed a complete makeover, keeping only the boardwalk. An urban beach includes a children’s play area, sand volleyball courts and firepits.

city of Omaha is located on the tribe’s traditional homeland. The Kiewit Luminarium celebrates the interaction of science and art along with human perceptions. Encouraging people of all ages to explore more than 100 interactive exhibits, the Luminarium covers everything from sea life to motion, light and human anatomy. The National Park Service’s regional headquarters features a small museum with items seen during the Lewis and Clark expedition through the region, as well the flags of several Indigenous tribes. Your Omaha riverfront experience culminates with a walk across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. Almost a mile long, the bridge is one of the longest in the country connecting two states. “The Bob,” as it’s known locally, even has its own social media account (@BobTBridge on X/Twitter). “The Bob” is guarded on the Omaha side by OMAR the troll, a cute blue sculpture perfect for selfies. There’s even a splash park for visitors during summer months. Seasonal concerts are hosted near the bridge’s base. Omaha’s riverfront offers a fresh view of the city, along with a plethora of experiences. This isn’t your grandparents’ riverfront.

By Jeanine Consoli Freelance Travel Writer If you’ve never been to southern Louisiana or experienced the thrilling beat of Cajun music. In that case, you must put the area’s dance halls on your bucket list. I’d always wanted to visit these venues. I’m completely hooked after my recent trip to the “Heart of Cajun” country–Lafayette. Lafayette, Louisiana, also known as Acadiana, is famous for its rich musical tradition descending from French and Creole ancestors. In Acadiana, you can catch -92- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

live performances of Cajun, Zydeco, Bluegrass, Indie, or country music any night of the week. You can also see a celebration of this music at many festivals throughout the year. Lafayette has a “Dance Hall Trail,” where you can sample iconic dance houses throughout the city and the neighboring towns most evenings. And, if you’re an early riser, Buck and Johnny’s in Breaux Bridge offers Zydeco Breakfast at 8:00 am on Saturdays. At this event, you can twostep and dine on a delicious stack of pancakes.

party here because of the area’s vibrant culture, known as Cajun. French settlers expelled from Canada (Acadie) in the late 1700s landed in southern Louisiana and made a home in the swamps. They brought their fiddles and their songs sung in French. The settlers mingled their way of life with West African enslaved peoples and Native peoples who also had their musical traditions. The cultures melded as they worked hard to make a life for themselves in harsh conditions. Once the work was done, the play started, which included a love of music, storytelling, and food–a celebration of their experience. In a nutshell, it’s a work, hard, play, hard way of life passed down and embraced to this day.

Dance Hall History

I had heard about the famous dance halls and was excited to experience this tradition here in Cajun country.

The Blue Moon Saloon By Visit Lafayette

Before the arrival of the Acadians in the early 1700s, the practice of music and dancing occurred at a bal de Maison –a local dance held at a plantation home where guests were invited to attend. The host would move the furniture and open the windows so air could flow and the music could be enjoyed inside and on the grounds. The wealthy landowners embraced this tradition, as did the farming families hosting similar events on their farms. Les Salles de Danse became popular around the Civil War. It was a building that was open to the public as a place to enjoy music, the bar, and some dancing to forget about one’s cares. A small admission fee was charged, and it was also a night out for the entire family, as many brought their children to enjoy the experience. The performance/dance

house tradition continues to this day. While many old hangouts have closed, venues are still alive and well in southern Louisiana.

The Blue Moon Saloon

It seems that music is a way of life in Lafayette. It’s said that “On any given weekend, there could be at least 50 live music shows.” The Blue Moon Saloon is one of those incredible dance and music halls that draws a crowd from Wednesday to Sunday. In 1900, a large wooden house was relocated from downtown. Once relocated, it opened as a flower shop and other businesses. In 2021, it became The Blue Moon Guest House and Saloon. The Guest House operates like a European Hostel, offering rooms for rent. It’s a great place to stay, as the accommodations are just steps from the performances that rock the house. it’s a well-loved community gathering place. Southern Living Magazine recognized the Blue Moon as one of the 100 Best Bars in the South in 2014.

Amis Du Teche

I walked into the famous Blue Moon to hear Amis Du Teche, a young quartet whose members are barely in their twenties. The evening we visited, the venue was packed. Amis Du Teche, with fiddler Adeline Miller, guitarist/vocalist Amelia Powell, Adeline’s brother Robert Miller on the Bass, and Laykin Usie on drums, have been playing instruments since childhood. They all grew up together on Bayou Teche and named their band in honor of their connection to their home, where their friendship began. Amelia Powell grew up with Cajun music as a part of her upbringing. Her parents are both acclaimed musicians. Her dad, Dirk Powell, is a banjo icon. Her mom, Christine Balfa, is the daughter of music legend Dewy Balfa of the Balfa Brothers. She also plays in her own band, Bonsoir, Catin. Adeline Miller took up the fiddle after moving to the area from New York at an early age. Adeline and her father fell in love with the instrument and took lessons. She took to it like a fish to water. She and her brother now embrace the

Cajun music tradition they discovered in Louisiana. The heritage, the sound of the fiddle, and the singing (entirely in French) filled the hall; it was electric. We all fell under the spell of the rhythm and energy in the room. Couples, young and old, took to the crowded floor to dance so naturally and without any

awkwardness. We stood shoulder to shoulder, cheering on the band and sharing in the local culture. Observing the ease with which couples danced to the music and enjoyed the vibe was life-affirming. You couldn’t help but tap your toes and sway. The whole evening was triumphant and fun.

Southern City A Key

“The Mississippi Delta begins in the lobby in Memphis and ends on Catfish Row in Vic By Renée Gordon Travel History Writer

Vicksburg sits midway between Memphis and New Orleans, situated on the bluffs above the east bank of the Mississippi River at the mouth of the Yazoo River. Prior to first European contact Native Americans used the river as an important means of transportation and trade and it was these river communities that Hernando De Soto encountered in 1541. De Soto was the first European to document the river but it was the French, 132-years later, who mapped the course of the river. In 1719 the French constructed Fort Saint Pierre and it was destroyed by Native Americans in 1729. In the late 1700s Great Britain was given the land by the Treaty of Paris and atop the same bluffs the Spanish constructed Nogales trading outpost in 1790 and a settlement, Walnut Hills, grew around it. My First Road Trip By Kathy Condon Freelance Travel Writer I was asked to cover the Chilled Magazine 100 Elevate Conference in Louisville. One hundred and sixty bartenders would come together to visit distilleries and attend seminars that would help enhance their skills. My role was to capture the event in writing. Before making airline reservations, I heard a quiet voice say, “Kathy, take a road trip to Lexington.” I’d had seen pictures and movies of Kentucky roads with white picket fences, and something inside of me alerted me it was time for me to explore and see for myself.

Preparation for the Trip

Looking at my calendar, I decided I could take three days to explore. I would also fly back to Palm Springs from Lexington and save $100 on an airline ticket instead of Louisville. The journey between Louisville and Lexington is 72 miles. It was apparent I would -106- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

need to rent a car. Since I was on my own, I explored places to stay. After researching several options, I found an Airbnb located on the beltway surrounding the city of Lexington.

The Journey Begins

Early on, I had decided to take the backroads to Lexington. I wanted to get a view, even with a short trip, a taste of Kentucky’s countryside. I picked up the rental car at the Louisville Airport, got directions, and headed out of Louisville.

Once leaving the city limits, I smiled as I saw my first white picket fence. On rolling hills surrounding a large farm were horses grazing on Kentucky bluegrass. Further down the road, I was alerted to a scenic spot. I pulled over, and right before me was Kentucky’s capital. Construction towers shielded part of it. However, it was evident it is a majestic building. A little further down the road, signs pointed to historic downtown Franklin. I followed the signs downtown.

From Louisville to Lexington A Castle in Kentucky

It was one of those Hallmark quaint towns. Alas, I was on a mission to get to Lexington. I noted that I wanted to come here and explore in the future.

With Country Music playing on the radio, I continued my journey. Then, off to my left, I couldn’t believe what I saw: a castle on the top of the hill. Yes, I’m talking about the kind of castle one might see in Europe.

Woodford Reserve Distillery

Frankly, I wasn’t planning on stopping at another distillery since I had seen three in Louisville. However, I was ready for a break, so I made the turn to the Woodford Reserve Distillery. Both sides of the road had white picket fences. Large trees surrounded the entire drive, sometimes forming a cathedral-like arch as I drove the approximately two miles to the distillery. The building, where the tastings are held, was modern and comfortable and took full advantage of its strategic location on a hill. Patrons were sitting on the patio sipping their craft cocktails and meeting new friends who had come there from all over the country. Thinking I had seen enough

gift shops in the last few days, I was inclined to skip this one. However, people I met in the tasting room building said I absolutely should make a stop. I listened to them and drove a short distance to the gift shop parking lot. This gift shop was a step up from anyone I had ever seen. Beautiful dark wood shelves had bottles of bourbon lit from behind. If you wanted a special gift, you could get a band engraved for a bottle of bourbon you want to present to someone. A variety of Bitters and a box of bourbon candy caught my attention.

Surely, there must be a story about it, so I took the road up it. Once I got closer, it was even bigger than I had initially thought. I walked into the front entrance, and the grand staircase was right before me. A restaurant and a gift shop were off to the left. Off to the right was a beautiful ballroom-like room used for events. The story is about a man who built the castle for his fiancée. They broke up, and the place languished there for years. Now it is The Kentucky Castle Hotel, with gardens, rooftop terraces, and farm-totable fine dining. A separate building on the site houses the Spa--The Kentucky Castle. Exploring Downtown

on The Blue Herson Steakhouse. It was closed, but peeking inside, I loved the use of all the plants and the openness of the restaurant. I researched, and locals said this is one of the places to go if you are looking for a good steak.

With rain pattering on the window, there was a strong inclination to pull the covers up and stay in bed. However, I was here to learn about Lexington, so by the time I had a shower, the sun was again shining brilliantly.

Directly across the street was The Goose. I wandered into the casual entrance and was escorted to the patio, embracing greenery from the outside hedge. Here, patrons gathered around tables for apparent lunch meetings.

Mary Todd Lincoln Childhood Home

My first stop was Mary Todd Lincoln’s Childhood home. Admittedly, I drove by it three times. I was expecting a tiny log cabin-like home surrounded by highrise buildings since it was downtown. Then I saw the sign. I parked in the back and returned to the Main Street entrance. There in front of me was a large building. Mary’s father was a banker. The home was a former tavern and came up for sale during foreclosure. He bought it and made it into a five-bedroom house for his seven children. The tour of the house illustrated this was a family of means. Abraham Lincoln stayed here for three months before he became president. Many of the artifacts in the -108- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

house are original, including the candlesticks used in the Whitehouse. Another factoid of interest. This was the very first home preserved in memory of a First Lady of the United States.

Downtown Dining

After touring Todd’s home, it was time for lunch. I decided to wander on my own and enjoyed seeing the antebellum-type homes on the back streets. I loved the sign

Since I was in bourbon country, I figured I couldn’t go wrong with pork chops with apple butter bourbon sauce. The portion was huge and smothered in the sauce. My first bite had me, and it was so

delicious and perfectly prepared. My first thought was that I needed to duplicate this entrée.

Restored Courthouse

I was determined to meet the staff of the Visit Lexington Visitors Center. Much to my pleasure, they are housed in the Historic Courthouse. The building has been refurbished, with the only original feature saved, the beautiful wooden floor in the Center. There is a hip new restaurant, and offices occupy the upper floors. This is a delightful reminder of what forward-thinking city officials can create if they hitch onto their imagination.

Taking the Advice of the Visitor Center

My mentor, Mary Charlebois, had told me while in the area that I might want to check out Keeneland Racetrack. I was planning to go there in the afternoon. However, staff at the Visitor Center of Lexington suggested I go there in the morning instead. I had a 2:00 p.m. flight the next day, and they said that was perfect because the Keeneland Racetrack was literally across from the Airport. I listened to them and am so glad I did. After packing, I head-

ed to the Keeneland Racetrack, an easy commute since I was on the beltway around Lexington. I parked my car and marveled at the trees that lined the entire racetrack grounds. As they suggested, I headed down to the racetrack. Seeing the jockey taking the thoroughbreds out for a workout around the track was a thrill. I love that the jockeys knew we were there and came close to the rail so we could see the horse and its power. I tagged along on a tour and learned there was a thoroughbred sale at the auction building. What a special moment to walk into the building and see buyers bidding on thoroughbreds as the horses were brought on the stage in the exhibit hall. Each bidding opportunity lasts an average

of 90 seconds: one of the thoroughbreds sold for 1.3 million dollars the day before.

Time to head to the Airport.

It was time to return the rental car and check in for my flight back to Palm Springs. Once I was settled into my seat on the airplane, I smiled. From day one, I knew this side trip was an extra expense, but the small voice was so persistent, and I was proud of myself for listening to it. January, 2024~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -109-

New Ski Resort Open RALEIGH — Snowsports lovers will find a fresh experience in North Carolina this season with the opening of Hatley Pointe Mountain Resort. It restages the runs and amenities of the former Wolf Ridge Ski Resort in Mars Hill. With its boutique approach and rebranding, Hatley Pointe joins the state’s five other ski areas with a range of activities on the slopes and terrain parks plus ice rinks, tubing features and more. In addition, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s winter outlook predicts more precipitation than normal in the Southeast the next few months as a result of developing weather pattern El Niño, which could bode well for skiers and snowboarders across North Carolina. “From the High Country to the state’s southern edge, the North Carolina mountains become a winter wonderland,” said Wit Tuttell, executive director of Visit North Carolina. “Each of our six ski areas adds unique appeal for everyone from beginners to those ready for a double black diamond run. We’re home to the country’s oldest adaptive ski clinic, the Southeast’s oldest and best-known ski school, and with Hatley Pointe the newest ski resort.” Sugar Mountain continues its tradition as an early-bird opener -110- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

with a morning announcement that manmade powder covers six of its 20 trails as snowmaking continues to prime the remaining runs. Appalachian Ski Mtn. in Boone plans to open Thursday with Beech Mountain Resort joining the action Saturday. The season generally continues through March and the arrival of spring temperatures. “The mountains of North Carolina have the highest elevations and the coldest climates in the South,” Tuttell said. “To supplement an average snowfall of 60 inches, North Carolina ski areas’ state-ofthe-art snowmaking capabilities provide 100% slope

coverage, making area’s snowmaking capacity top-notch. Even if the forecast takes a turn for the warmer at the time of a planned ski trip, travelers can find plentiful rewards in mountain destinations. In the High Country, for instance, the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster in Banner Elk goes a long way toward replacing the rush of a downhill run.” According to the N.C. Ski Areas Association, the industry has an annual economic impact of more than $244.3 million in North Carolina in 2022-23. Here’s a rundown of what’s offered on and off the slopes. Find more details in the downloadable brochure from the N.C. Ski Areas Association.

Lowcountry, Roots, Revels And Reconstruction “The greatness of man lies in the decision to be stronger than his condition.” A. Camus By Renée S. Gordon History & Travel Writer The Lowcountry is defined geographically as twelve counties in the eastern section of coastal South Carolina, where the mountains’ foothills meet the sandy coastal plains. The area is bordered by the Savannah River, the Atlantic Ocean and the Sea Islands. Much of the Lowcountry averages a mere 270-ft. above sea

level and is rife with natural habitats including beaches, maritime forests, Live oak trees, palmettos, salt marshes and hundreds of impressive photo ops. Culturally and historically the region preserves and showcases its “biography” through greater than 1,500 sites, 300 National Historic Landmarks and more than 1,000 restaurants from upscale dining to local gas stations. #DiscoverSC In 1540 Hernando de Soto entered what is now SC. On his journey he was met by more than twenty-five sizeable native tribes. Twenty-two years later French explorer Jean Ribault established a colony near Port Royal in Beaufort County and in the Sea Islands permanent settlements were documented as early as the 1690s. In 1711 the City of Beaufort was the second city founded in South Carolina. Fort Moultrie’s fortifications were constructed on Sullivan’s Island in 1776, using palmetto tree logs, to protect Charleston from British attack. An attack by the British Navy took place in June of 1776. British cannonballs bounced off the palmetto logs resulting in a patriot victory. The palmetto tree became a symbol, as depicted on the state flag, for the people’s tenacity, hardiness and resilience. The Lowcountry’s story of African American heritage is encapsulated within the larger story of US history. The focus of the trail is to trace the scope of events on the black community and the international impact of African American culture, diversity, music and cuisine of the Lowcountry. Their story personifies the values represented by the palmetto with unique cultural additions. The trans-Atlantic slave trade and the institution of slavery were the backbone of SC’s economy. In 1790 the first census stated that Charleston’s population was 75% enslaved. By 1861 the enslaved population numbered 402,000, 10,000 free blacks and 291,000 whites statewide, accounting for about 30% of the population. A 1740 basic slave code is very harsh and reflects the fears of the white community. The Negro Act explicitly granted -112- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ January 2024

permission for owners to kill slaves they deemed rebellious. In 1861 the Battle of Port Royal was fought and in December of that year the Union marched in and found a single white resident remaining. South Carolina had been the wealthiest city in SC and many white owners lived in Beaufort in grandiose townhouses. Upon occupation the Union found 10,000 enslaved people abandoned when their owners fled and these individuals were arguably the first freed slaves of the war. Beaufort was first visited by Europeans around 1512. The city was built around a fort in 1706 and was wiped out by natives in 1715. From that time on Beaufort has been a witness to extraordinary events. There are 70 sites on the National Register of Historic Places and eateries designed to enhance your Lowcountry experience.

Robert Smalls was born a slave in Beaufort in 1839. His owner, McKee, hired him out in 1851. He worked on the Confederate ship CSS Planter where he learned every job. While the white crew was ashore on May 13, 1862 he loaded the ship with his fam-

ily, black crewmen and their families. Clad as the captain he sailed through Charleston Harbor, turned the ship over to the Union and received a $1,500 bounty. He was promoted to captain of the Planter in 1863. He served in the State Legislature 1868-74 and the House of Representatives from 1875-1887. He purchased McKee’s former 2-story home and allowed McKee’s destitute widow to move into his mansion. The property was family owned until 1953. Smalls died in 1915 and is buried in a plot along with family members at the 1811 Tabernacle Baptist Church. Built using enslaved labor, the church, originally a meetinghouse, was acquired by a black congregation in 1863. A tower was added in 1873. The gravesite is accessible as is a memorial bust of Smalls. Harriet Tubman served as a nurse in Beaufort and the church is currently raising funds for a Tubman Memorial to be placed on the grounds. The church remains active but only exterior viewing is available. A tour along the circuitous streets reveals architecturally stunning ante-bellum homes and the arsenal that houses the Beaufort History Museum. The second floor has an exhibit on movies, including The Great Santini and Forrest

Gump, filmed in Beaufort. Walking and van tours of movie locations are available. The Greek Revival Maxcy Milton House was constructed on the site of a previous 1740s house in 1810 and remodeled in 1850. It is known as the Secession House because meetings were held from the 1850s about secession. The home’s owner held 42 people in bondage. The home has Ionic and Corinthian columns, 6 marble fireplaces and a second-floor piazza.

President Obama established the Reconstruction Era National Monument (RENM) in January of 2017. Beaufort was selected as the site of the monument and visitor center primarily because it was the center of the Port Royal Experiment. The Union’s opening move in Reconstruction was a headquarters for the U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freed-

men and Abandoned Lands in South Carolina, and the location of SC’s first Freedmen’s Bank. It is tasked with fostering commemorating and educating individuals on the Reconstruction Era, 1861-76. The visitor center has displays on the era with an emphasis on the Port Royal Experiment in which the former enslaved were given food, shelter and education. They received land on which they once worked to farm and share profits with the government. Abandoned mansions were sold for taxes and some, like Robert Smalls, were able to purchase them. This is a must visit because it is the sole repository for a composite and cohesive view of the period after the Civil War and the first concentrated Civil Rights efforts. Southern Living designated Beaufort “The South’s Best Smallest Town.” Once you have visited you will resoundingly agree. I deem the Beaufort Inn the best accommodations in Beaufort based on its location, near the Historic District and all the significant sites, the variety of guestrooms, outstanding amenities and ambiance. Vouchers for Blackstone’s Café may be included and provide guests an opportunity to enjoy a bountiful breakfast. Beaufortinn.com Step into the story. Visit Beaufort.

Pigeon Forge and Dolly Besides being a fantastic singer and songwriter, Dolly Parton is a smart businesswoman. Since Dollywood ranked #1 in the Travelers’ Choice Top 25 Amusement Parks in the United States and #8 on their Top 25 Worldwide Amusement Parks for 2022, it’s not surprising she opened a new resort in Pigeon Forge. HeartSong Lodge & Resort just opened Nov 3, 2023‌and I got to visit and take a tour of this fantastic resort.

HeartSong

A massive stone fireplace commands your attention when you enter the lobby. The fireplace’s sculptured doors created by Kevin Stone shows Dolly as a young girl perched on a curving branch sitting under a tree with one of her favorite creatures, a butterfly. Our guide, Jenn Webb, led us through the resort. She explained that the resort captures the beauty of the Smokies that Dolly calls home and loves. It’s based on Dolly’s 1994 “HeartSong” telling of her memories of growing up in her Smoky Mountain home. When you head to the

reception desk, there’s a room-sized screen showing changing Smoky Mountain scenes. A proud elk with huge antlers gazes out at you then the screen shows a mama bear with her cubs rambling across it. Dolly describes HeartSong as a “high-fashion rustic lodge.” The multi-story lobby has high ceilings with lantern

inspired windows. Since you are just a short distance from the Great Smoky Mountains, you can see the mountain scenery. The plush, smoky blue velvet sofas and carpets designed to look like tree rings and fireflies contribute the luxury part to complement the rustic mountain scenery.

feel. The lodge has 302 rooms and suites ranging from standard guest rooms decorated with Smokey Mountain scene murals to themed suites; some of the family suites have bunk rooms for the youngsters. Some are decorated with a daytime Smoky Mountain mural and some a darker nighttime one. Beds range from king to two queens per room.

Step around behind the fireplace and you are in the Acoustic Lobby, a pink-andpurple event space with a sparkling guitar chandelier that can be used for private dining. When it’s not being used for an event, it’s open to all guests. It’s decorated with a large painting of Dolly and some of her instruments and costumes and other Dolly memorabilia that will rotate so you may see something new each time you visit. Wander outside and there is an outdoor pool with a waterfall and splash pad. There’s a playground area

with one of Dolly’s Imagination Books free libraries set by a circle of stones where kids can sit and enjoy a good book. There’s a giant gas operated communal fire pit for family gatherings called The Outdoor Cove. For couples or smaller families, there are individual fire pits. At night they host marshmallow roasts. There’s an indoor pool and a hot tub also. HeartSong is perfect for family getaways compared to Dollywood’s Dreammore Resort and Spa which has a more feminine

Pigeon Forge

If you haven’t visited in a few years, Pigeon Forge has some new attractions for you to enjoy along with Dollywood, Titanic Museum, the dinner shows, Old Mill District, and the older attractions.

The Sky Pirates of Mermaid Bay

Sky Pirates of Mermaid Bay will be opening soon. It’s a mini-golf course with indoor and outdoor courses. The courses are themed telling the story about Captain Thunderbeard and his Sky Pirates trying to capture the treasure of the Mermaid

Folks. You pick whether you want to join the mermaids or the pirates.

Pink Jeep Tours

Pink Jeep Tours started in Pigeon Forge in 2019. Our driver gave us a guided tour through Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We followed the winding, 5.5-mile-long, one-way, loop road through an oldgrowth forest. We stopped at several historic log cabins including The Ephraim and Minerva Bales’ farmstead where they raised nine children in a tiny log cabin and the farm of Noah “Bud” Ogle. Just outside the park, we explored the Old Ely Mill built in 1920 on 30 acres in the Smokies by a former Yale graduate who grew tired of civilization after his wife died. Pink Jeep’s newest tour

is to Elkmont, known as the “Lost Town of the Smokies.” Pigeon Forge Snow Pigeon Forge Snow opened in 2018. We visited and experienced sliding down the snowy slope in an inner tube. It’s the first indoor snow complex in the country that has a 200-foot-long snow slide. No need to worry about the cold since it’s always about 60% to 70% here even though they have real snow created daily. For younger guests or those who are less adventurous, there’s a snow play area where you can build snowmen and play in the snow. There’s a snack bar with chips, crackerjack, candy, or soft drinks.

Azul Cantina

Azul Cantina opened the first rooftop bar in Pigeon forge in 2022. It combines Tex-Mex dining with woodfire grilling methods. We ate in the Dolly Room, named for its wall covered in a mural of Dolly. After a tasty treat of guacamole with Azul Special Chips and Matcho Wings, mesquite smoked chicken wings tossed in a spicy salsa dressing and served with jicama and avocado dressing, we went up to see the view from the rooftop bar. You can see all over the city from it. They serve craft cocktails like Lone Star Libre with two kinds of rum, lime, demerara syrup,

Coke Cola in a salt rimmed glass and Rhinestone Cowboy made with tequila, elderberry liqueur, agave syrup and mint.

Country Roads Axe Co. featuring West by God Coal Fired Pizza,

For something new and unusual in dining, try Country Roads Ax House is where you’ll enjoy West by God Coal-Fired Pizza while you toss axes at digitally designed targets. Ben Bog-

gess, Co-Founder of West by God Coal Fired Pizza and obviously a West Virginia native, told us why his pizza is different and better. They make their pizza the way Italian Immigrants to New York area made pizza and then cook it in the 700-degree coal fired oven. We tried several and must agree they are delicious. New or old, Pigeon Forge has attractions that are hard to beat.
