As I get older and the clocks keep turning, I sometimes feel the activities, events and destinations are whirling around in my head so fast that it makes me dizzy. Every month, I receive more press releases, phone messages, social media tags and emails than the month before. They just keep coming and flowing all over my desk (and it’s a huge one) to where I have given up any thoughts of trimming the list down to share only a few. Where does the time go? The clock in my office chimes the time every hour and I could swear it goes off every 10 minutes. Let’s face it. There are just so many wonderful places to go, things to do and people to see to fill our weekends with holiday magic, I MUST share them all. But alas, the deadline is here once again and I must give in to closing down this issue. But there’s always more to come in our weekly newsletters, and before you know it, the New Year will be here for another wonderful issue filled with ideas for your next extended weekend getaways. Until then, I wish you the very best “Merry Christmas and Happy New

Recipes For Life

A Memorial, Magical, M By Kandy Derden Things-to-do Editor

What was your Most Memorable Christmas? One of my first years hosting the family gathering comes to mind. I had been assured it was okay if I wanted to keep things simple. It went against every tradition I thought should be upheld, but instead of a full, sit-down dinner, we had everything laid out on the kitchen counter so everyone could serve themselves. As my sixyear-old nephew went through the line, he told me I was the best cook in the whole world! I remember it not because of the compliment, but because of the irony. On his plate, there was a pile of potato chips and two cookies. I must admit, as I looked over the assortment of holiday specialties on the buffet, that sort of popped my bubble. Sometimes the most memorable were not the best. But then, I realized: it’s not about me.

What was your Most Magical Christmas? This one is a little bit easier. We were never taught to believe in Santa Claus. On the contrary, we were taught not to speak to strangers. And this loud man wearing funny red clothes was definitely strange to me. I remember

-8- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

specifically refusing to tell him my name. My sister was a bit more vocal. She told him if he was really Santa, he would already know her name. You simply can’t argue with the logic of a child. That being said, we were nearly adults when we realized how the Santa who didn’t know our names still had packages for us with our names on them. Apparently, our grandparents were already practicing the policy: it’s not about me.

What was your Most Meaningful Christmas? It’s odd what we do and do not remember. The first year after college when I was living several states away, I began checking airline rates and schedules in September. I bought my ticket and finished gift shopping in October, making sure to get something for everyone which was small and easy to fit into my lug-

Meaningful Christmas gage. Everything was wrapped and packed long before Thanksgiving. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process involved in making that Christmas special. As a result, I found out I usually enjoy the preparation and expectancy of a magical event more often than the actual event. You see, I don’t remember much of anything else about that Christmas. What sticks in my mind the most was packing for my return trip. It had never once occurred to me to make plans for a way to get any Christmas gifts I might receive back home with me. Yes, I think perhaps I was beginning to get a grasp on

the true meaning of Christmas that year. That was the year I embraced the concept: it’s not about me. Have you ever noticed how no matter how good or bad a Christmas may have been, we always make plans to do it again and again and again? Why? Tradition! Now, I’m not stuck on any ritual simply because it has always been done. I prefer to choose which customs I enjoyed enough to recreate, if not for myself, but for others to experience all the good things I found enjoyable. This is how I choose to practice: it’s not about me. So, what Christmas is the most memorable, magical and meaningful? No contest. It’s always the next one.

Firstly, Kristen recommends “promptly sending out your ‘save the dates’ as soon as you’ve locked down your wedding date and venue, or around the 12-month mark. Adhering to this practice becomes particularly crucial when your wedding coincides with the holiday season.” Getting a jump start for all leads to less stress, fewer questions, and more loved ones able to attend. “Providing this advanced notice will prompt your guests to make your wedding a priority when organizing their busy holiday calendars.” When that date and location are set, it’s helpful to inform your guests what they can expect regarding the climate—a challenge

-10- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

And since we’re talking about climate, Kristen recommends that “with an indoor venue, it is important to discuss temperature with your on-site coordinator. Oftentimes many venues will keep their thermostats set at a specific temperature during the winter. When you have warmer days roll through and 100+ people are moving through the venue, things can heat up quickly. Guest comfort is so important and really can dictate the success of your event. When you spend so much time and money curating your dream space, you do not want that to be overshadowed by sweaty or freezing guests!” If guests aren’t comfortable, chances are, they’ll depart earlier than you’d like them too. Given the abundance of decorations everywhere you look during the holidays, you may be wondering how to set your wedding apart from Photos by what’s already out Molly Quill Photography there. Kristen advises that you “opt for rich, warm colors that don’t reflect the traditional holiday colors. This will help you curate a color palette that fits within the season, while not feeling themed.” She notes that “color combined with texture can bring such a beautiful balance of elegance and warmth. When designing the perfect holiday wedding, we love incorporating velvet, whether we use velvet as the linen or in subtle accents such as ribbons on bouquets.

lounge areas when designing your holiday wedding. Not only is this an area to get creative with your design, but plush seating, rugs and throws will also encourage your guests to get cozy while mingling.”

Since you’ve chosen to get married during the holidays, of course you’ll be taking advantage of the spirit of the season with your menu. Kristen recommends “incorporating in-season ingredients to yield a better culinary experience for you and your guests. Don’t shy away from classic dishes and cocktails that people often think of during the winter season, but remember to get creative and put your own fun twist on things. As your wedding design won’t feel holiday themed, you can bring in more seasonal drinks and food items without it feeling like overkill. A cranberry margarita is a delicious option for a signature cocktail. A warm spiked cider can also be really nice if you are looking for a more traditional drink.”

Other wonderful textures and materials to consider incorporating would be satin, silk, suede and lace. There has been a notable 3.25% increase in NFL attendance in 2022 to 69,442 per game, which is the second-highest figure in the last 19 years. With this in mind, Viator sought to uncover the best US states for sports fans to visit as part of their “All-American” Index.1,2 To accomplish this, the experts created a points-based index system that analyzed various metrics. These included the number of sports venues per state, average stadium capacities, number of male professional sports teams and college football teams, as well as the average attendance to ultimately uncover the best US states for sports tourism. Methodology: 1. Viator sought to discover which US state is the best for sports travel. This press release is part of a wider Viator study into the most “All-American” states. 2. To analyze which state could boast the most sporting venues, the number of stadiums (football, soccer, baseball) was sourced, as were indoor arenas (basketball and hockey). College sports venues were also included. 3. The total number of professional and college sporting venues per 100 square miles was calculated for each state. As well as the number of average attendances per professional games per state including NFL, NHL, MLS, MBS, NBA and the average number of attendances to college football games per state. To supplement the number of venues the average capacity per state was calculated. We also used Wikipedia to source the number of professional teams per state in NFL, NHL, MLS, MBS, NBA. 4. *NHL attendance records are reported from the year 2021/22, whereas the other leagues were calculated on 2023 attendance. 5. **This data focuses on only male sports teams across the US, therefore all rankings are not including the success of US female sports teams. 6. ***The Canadian major sports teams that play alongside US teams were not counted in this data. 7. ****Numbers have been rounded up in the table above, find full figures in the dataset. 8. Amana Colonies The Amana Colonies stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of the German settlers who founded this peaceful village in the 19th century. Stepping into the Amana Colonies is like taking a stroll back in time, where cobblestone streets, charming half-timbered houses, and a warm community spirit create an atmosphere that is both inviting and enchanting.

A Historical Journey

The story of Amana Colonies begins in the 1850s when a group of German Pietists seeking religious freedom established a communal society in Iowa. The settlers, inspired by a desire for a simpler and more communal way of life, formed the Amana Society. They built seven villages, each with its own unique charm, and engaged in farming, craftsmanship, and communal living. Over the years, the Amana Colonies have evolved, preserving their rich history while embracing modernity. Today, visitors can explore the historic sites, museums, and artisan shops that tell the tale of the Amana people and their journey to create a harmonious community.

A Winter Wonderland

While the Amana Colonies are a year-round destination, there’s something magical about experiencing the village under a blanket of snow, especially during the Christmas season. The European ambiance is accentuated by the glistening white landscape, creating a picturesque setting that feels straight out of a storybook.

Wichita - Meet

“All things are bound together. All things connect.” Chief Seattle, Duwamish Wichita’s iconic symbol, The Keeper of the Plains, sums up the overarching history, culture, significance and role of the city where the West truly begins. The 44-foot Keeper of the Plains is situated at the site where the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers, in downtown Wichita, is on Native American sacred ground. It faces the rising sun, weighs 5-tons and stands on a 30-foot pedestal and is depicted with arms lifted in entreaty to the Great Spirit. A “Ring of Fire” burns all year on a regular schedule. The sculpture’s design was created and gifted to the city by Kiowa-Comanche artist Blackbear Bosin in 1974. Keeper Plaza features cultural information on the Plains Indians. Around the statue are multiple plaques describing the life, belief, and practices of pre-contact Plains Indian tribes. A sacred hoop symbolizes the directions, the seasons and the earth’s essential elements earth, wind, fire and water. The earliest inhabitants lived on the Great Plains for more than 14,000-years. These tribes included the Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Comanche, Crow and Sioux. Their lives were largely nomadic and revolved around the buffalo. Native Americans continue to gather at this sacred site. In 1969 the Mid-America All-Indian Museum was established as a keeper and promulgator of American Indian culture and heritage. Seventy-three tribes are represented in the Wichita region. The museum has a 3,000-piece collection and presents rotating exhibits. An Outdoor Learning Center featuring a 20-ft tall tipi and a classroom enhance the complex. trader, blazed a trade route that would evolve into the Chisholm Trail, from Texas to Wichita. The trail was used for cattle drives from the 1860s to the 1870s for cattle headed for northern railheads. Wichita thrived on the cattle trade and constructed hotels and two infamous saloons, the First and Last Chance, one at each end of the route. The railroad came to Wichita in 1872 ending an era.

Comstock: Christm COMSTOCK - You may not think a town of 100 in the middle of Nebraska - miles away from the state’s largest cities - is a must-see attraction in winter, but if you’re a holiday decorations fan, Comstock is a must during the Christmas season. The town’s holiday celebration grew from a simple house decoration about 10 years ago. Henry Nuxoll put up colored lights on his quaint house and displayed inflatable characters in his front yard. A few days later, a package was dropped off anonymously at his door. So, he displayed an inflatable Santa Claus and reindeer on the roof of the house. Then, everything took off! Over a 30-day period, more than $3,000 worth of lights and inflatables were delivered to his house. Locals apparently thought he was the person who could bring a little Christmas charm to their community. So he and a few volunteers decorated Comstock for the holidays. Today, about 20 city blocks – about 90 percent of town - are home to more than 400 inflatables, 40 themed scenes, and a mile of holiday lights. As you enter Comstock, you’ll see inflatable characters playing a baseball game at the town’s field. Of course, Santa Claus is the pitcher. “We have Mickey Mouse characters, Minions, and Grinchville,” Nuxoll said. “We have 77 snowmen in a garden that we call ‘Snowman’s Land.’” Beyond inflatables and lights, Comstock’s holiday décor includes 50 buildings featuring holiday cutouts, as well as 25 clocks positioned on light poles, each set at midnight, just in time for Santa Claus’ arrival to the central Nebraska community, located about 76 miles (1.5 hours drive) northwest of Kearney. Comstock’s Christmas decorations have few rivals. You’ll find Santa Claus relaxing in a hammock while another appears to be pushing a lawn mower. And knowing he could take a few -44- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

pounds off his classic round figure, Santa is seen working out on an elliptical machine. A white metal fence is home to hand-painted plywood figures such as Santa Claus, angels, and snowmen, as well as a nativity scene. While Comstock’s population has dwindled over the years from a high of about 400 before the Great Depression in the 1930s, locals recall car dealerships that once did bang-up business, Nuxoll said. A few vintage automobiles are located around town and are decorated for the festiv-

mas Lights Capital ities. It takes about four weekends to prepare the town for the kickoff of the holiday lights festival, which starts the Friday after Thanksgiving and runs through Jan. 1, Nuxoll said. Despite its location, Comstock is a holiday draw, attracting about 1,000 people each weekend. Volunteers have at least 300 bags of candy and popcorn to hand out at the town’s health club each weekend night. A drive through Comstock allows visitors to relax and get away from the challenges of daily life, Nuxoll said. “The whole meaning behind everything here is that it’s a tough old world and they can enjoy things as they may appear in the Afterlife,” he said. While Comstock may be known for its holiday lights, for almost 25 years it has hosted an outdoor country music festival a few miles outside of town. Attracting up-and-coming stars, it’s featured acts like Brad Paisley. For about three days each summer, thousands of country music fans braved summer sun and heat – and a few thunderstorms – to enjoy daylong entertainment.

By Tim Trudell

Second Wind Ranch, north of Comstock, has one of the largest collections of vintage windmills in the Midwest. Consider grabbing dinner in Sargent, a 15-minute drive. The Rescue Bar and Grill’s menu includes burgers, sandwiches, wings, and salads. Corn nuggets and onion rings are excellent choices for an appetizer. You may want to combine your drive through Comstock’s holiday lights with a visit to Kearney, making it a fun weekend. Kearney is home to attractions such as the Museum of Nebraska Art, featuring unique artwork created by Nebraska artists, and The Archway, a museum that stretches across Interstate 80 and offers a look at the westward movement of Euro-American settlers in the 1800s and modern travel along US Highway 30 – the Lincoln Highway – which was the first transcontinental highway in the United States, constructed more than a century ago. As you make your way to Comstock, know that you’ll be experiencing a holiday light display that few larger cities can match. The commitment of locals to volunteer their time and create an island of holiday decorations in the middle of the Midwest is an act of love for people and the holiday season. It’s The Happy Place Growing up I never went to Disney World. I knew relatives who did, and their stories filled me with awe. When I met the woman I would eventually marry, I discovered she had also never been. We achieved that dream for our honeymoon, and nearly 17 years later Disney World is still our “Happy Place.” We have gone at different times of the year, almost always with an eye to avoiding the busiest ones, and have discovered one of the most magical times is November when holiday decorations are going up, but the parks have not hit their full-force Christmas crowds. Our most recent trip was the week before Thanksgiving and even though it rained almost every day, it at least never felt too crowded to do the things we wanted.

By Jacob LeMasters Journalist

bought a copy at Disney Springs and took it back to our room at the Port Orleans Riverside Resort to watch it. The newly renovated rooms there have fireworks on the bed backs that go off at the push of a button, and when I see Moana now I always think of watching it that first time, beneath the yellow lights of a twilit bayou. Large portions of Epcot have been under construction for awhile, but the dust has finally cleared on one section between the geosphere and The Land, and what have they been working on? An interactive water-themed walking tour inspired by Moana! Our kids delighted in playing with each feature and having the water play back. There were musical “strings” made from water that sounded notes when plucked. Fountains that rose to meet your hand. Waterfalls that parted if you approached slowly enough, and roaring geysers that leapt with the movement of your body. Ribbons of water formed a dancing arch over the exit path, and this is one of those defining experiences kids will remember about a trip, a place to play in ways that are unique and magical. Moana herself is available nearby for photos at

specific times of the day, but her line starts forming before she even arrives for each window, so come early. We have ridden Jungle Cruise on a couple of trips before and while we enjoyed it, we usually don’t spend a Lightning Lane on it. But our son has since found his appreciation for terrible jokes, both hearing them and making them; and something told us it would be just his sort of ride. Going to book it using the Genie+ app, we noticed a seasonal update: for the holidays it is the Jingle Cruise.

December, 2023 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -67-

The boat journey through a river with artistically rendered animals is always one bad pun after another, the adventure made different every time by the particular schtick of each captain. Aboard this Jingle Cruise, we experienced actual schtick as our captain was Jewish and gave each joke a Hanukah-themed spin, complete with dreidel. Sure enough, when we asked our son later what his favorite ride was he said, “Jingle Cruise!” Among the perks of staying at a Disney Resort for your trip is a voucher for a free round of mini-golf at Fantasia Gardens for each member of your party. Located next to Walt Disney World Swan Hotel between the parks and Disney Springs, Fantasia Gardens has our favorite theming of any mini-golf we’ve tried. Each hole of the Gardens course represents some element from the classic film Fantasia, including spinning snowflakes, happy mushrooms and satyrs, a not-too-spooky cave, and the iconic sorcerer’s brooms dumping actual water across the walkway. They also have the Fairways course which is like a regular golf course shrunk down, and which takes 90 minutes to play. (We always stick to the Gardens course with our kids but we did try the Fairways years ago and it is a brilliant concept: actual *miniature* golf.) The kids loved mini-golfing but it was the first day we experenced the full force of the Florida sun, unfiltered by any rainclouds, and we could not help but be grateful for the cloud cover the other days. As we said several times on our trip: we were not rained out, merely rained on!

Move Over, Rudolph – It’s Moodolph’s Chance to Shine! Reindeer Farm in Kentucky Prepares for the Ho-Ho-Holiday Season BOWLING GREEN - As the holiday season arrives, families may be looking for unique experiences to create lasting memories and new traditions. We’ve got just the place! Located in the heart of Bowling Green, a family-owned reindeer farm has become a popular holiday destination for locals and visitors alike. It’s the only spot in Kentucky with an immersive live reindeer encounter and – thanks to the Anderson family’s commitment to providing a magical experience and spreading holiday cheer – this farm has become a cherished Christmas tradition to all those who visit. It’s easy to see why it is such a popular holiday stop. The entire family pitches in here at The Reindeer Farm. Husband-and-wife team Russell and Jessica Anderson lead the herd with everyday operations. Ten-year-old Aniston is the farm manager who helps with the petting zoo, guest relations and checking guests in. Nine-year-old Ashton is “head of farm security” (she’s a black belt, so she isn’t messing around!) and sevenyear-old Russ acts as assistant manager. Jessica and Russell’s parents and siblings can also be found helping out around the venue, which stemmed from Jessica’s obsession with Christmas and Russell’s background in farming. Starting a reindeer farm was the perfect way to combine everyone’s passions and skills. The -78- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

farm offers an unforgettable opportunity to get up close and personal with Santa’s favorite companions, along with more traditional farm animals like pigs, bunnies and miniature cows. One of the many things that sets this family-owned reindeer farm apart is the dedication to an authentic, respectful animal experience. The Andersons offer Reindeer Encounters to help educate guests about reindeer and what makes the spe-

Apart from its educational aspect, the farm also offers a range of holiday-themed activities to get families into the spirit for decking the halls. Though you won’t find chestnuts roasting on an open fire, you WILL find s’mores … and plenty more! With an indoor playground, live ice sculpting demonstrations, train rides, breakfast with Santa, free hot cocoa and a station for writing letters to Santa, kids and adults alike always have a holly-jolly good time. The farm is also adorned with festive lights and decorations, in addition to an overflowing gift shop, all working to create a cheerful atmosphere that adds to the Christmas spirit. continue to be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until December 17. It will then be open daily through December 23. We’ll leave you with this fun fact: the lyrics from a Christmas classic – “up on the housetop, click, click, click” – don’t refer to hearing reindeer hooves on the roof. These animals have joints that click loudly to alert the herd members to their whereabouts in the event of inclement weather. So, the next time you hear clicking on Christmas Eve, it’s just Santa’s sleigh-pullers communicating with each other through the snow. https://thereindeerfarm.com/

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen … but what about Flea, Mistletoe and Clarice? Though they may not be part of the “front line” on Christmas Eve, they (and seven others) are front and center here at the farm. They spend their time grazing, napping and playing reindeer games (yes, it’s a real thing)! Christmas came early to the farm this year, and gifted reindeer Moodolph and Mistletoe with a calf … the farm’s first. Baby Anderson loves attention and can’t wait to welcome visitors to his first Christmas season. Each state has a unique story, but none more internationally impactful than South Carolina. Theirs is a tale that begins with the establishment of the colony and has resonated throughout the centuries and the legacy of enslavement has been entwined throughout the culture in both overt and covert ways. This history that often makes people uncomfortable, but is necessary none the less, to relate a “round unvarnished tale.” The best way to understand South Carolina’s story is to immerse yourself in the sounds, smells, soundtrack and sites of the area that are a blend of all cultures. @Discover_SC Spanish explorers arrived in the South Carolina area in 1516. They were met by numerous bands of Native Americans, the largest being the Cherokee. In 1526 the Spanish started a settlement that failed almost immediately. They were followed in 1562 by the French Huguenots. English colonists founded the port City of Charleston in 1670 and it was named Charles Town in honor of England’s King Charles II. In 1690 the first shipment of black slaves arrived from Barbados and the systems and laws used to control institutional slavery were based on the Barbados model. Now home to an international museum it was the point of arrival for an estimated 45% of the United States enslaved Africans. The museum is creatively designed to reflect all aspects of these experiences. A comprehensive tour begins on the exterior. The building looms 13-ft. above the wharf and the African Ancestors Memorial Garden. The structure is suspended by 18 cylindrical pillars covered in oyster shell tabby, representing an important building material in the colonial era. Additional heritage elements in the garden include a wall of slave tags and sea grass garden of the type used in weaving baskets. In the East Yard an outline of the slave house that was there at the time can be seen. The house was used to quarantine the captives. The approximately 700 individuals who died there are memorialized with carved sculptures in the house. The iconic display, The Tide Tribute, is based upon a diagram of the Brookes slave ship. There’s a magic place where it’s Christmas all year long. It’s the Inn at Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge. The Inn at Christmas Place opened June 15, 2007. Its owners, the Biggs family, began in Pigeon Forge with The Incredible Christmas Place, a group of Christmas stores across the street that sells every conceivable Christmas ornament. So many people shopping there loved Christmas and kept saying they wish there was a Christmas-type place to spend the night. The Biggs decided it might be a good idea to build a Christmas hotel. The Inn has 145 guestrooms, all decorated with illuminated Christmas trees, wreaths, reindeer sculptures and red velvet bedding. In my room, there were small “Silent Night” embossed decorative pillows on each of the queen beds. The curtains were a red background with a snowflake pattern. Luminaries At Deser

PHOENIX-For 46 years, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, has been hosting Las Noches de las Luminarias during November and December. My favorite luminarias transform the garden into a stunning desert wonderland with 8,000 hand-lit glowing paper bags, creating a magical destination offering the best Sonoran Desert holiday season. The luminarias tradition at Desert Botanical Garden began with 700 hand-lit paper bags and homemade cookies. The event now attracts nearly three million visitors with special musical programs, art installations, festive food, and beverages.

What are Luminarias

Luminarias, with a rich history dating back to the 16th century in Mexico, originally used to light the way for people during Christmas. Luminarias are typically made by placing a small candle inside a paper bag filled with sand, creating a beautiful and warm glow. They often line pathways or decorate outdoor spaces during festive occasions.

About Desert Botanical Garden

The Desert Botanical Garden was established in 1939 by a group of passionate individuals who wanted to preserve and showcase the unique desert plants of the region. The garden’s mission is to advance the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of desert plants and ecosystems. It aims to inspire people to protect and conserve the desert environment through education, research, and public outreach programs. The garden is home to more than 50,000 plants, including rare and endangered species, -94- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

and it offers a variety of exhibits, trails, and events for visitors to explore and learn about the desert’s beauty and importance. With Papago Park as a backdrop, Desert Botanical Garden is about four miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and less than four miles from Old Town Scottsdale.

The Trails at Desert Botanical Garden

During the day, the gardens are bright and colorful. But, under the cloak of darkness, the gardens take on a mesmerizing ambiance as you make your way through this vast expanse of 140 acres filled with illuminated paths and trails.

Handbell ensembles, Mariachi bands, jazz bands, carolers, and the Phoenix Astronomical Society are among the exciting lineup of performers for the night I will be attending this season.

Additional Attractions

The Discovery Loop Trail at Desert Botanical Garden spans 1/3 mile and showcases various desert plant species, including historical collections. Five diverse habitats in the 1/3-mile Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop demonstrate how indigenous people used native plants for shelter, fiber, and food. Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trailci s a ¼ mile loop offering extensive mountain views, telescopes, and an organ pipe cactus forest. The Center for Desert Living Trail is a short, 1/10-mile edible garden loop that grows seasonal herbs and vegetables. The Desert Wildflower Loop is 1/3 mile of brightly colored blooms and pollinators like hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies.

Gertrude’s offers Contemporary American and Vegetarian pasture and farm-to-table meals for brunch, lunch, dinner, cocktails, and kid’s meals. My husband and I enjoyed dinner before our stroll through the gardens. They have an extensive wine list featuring Arizona wines (did you know Arizona has three wine-growing regions? located at the main entrance. You might think it’s always warm in the desert. However, during November and December, the temps may dip into the 40s and 50s during the evening and night, so dress accordingly. Hydration stations are located on every trail in the gardens. Restrooms and beverage stations are near every trail except the Sonoran Desert Nature Loop and the Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop. Electric scooters and wheelchairs are available to rent on a first-come, first-served basis. Most trails are stroller-friendly.

Final Thoughts

Las Noches de las Luminarias at the Desert Botanical Garden, my favorite luminarias, uniquely blends nature and culture for a traditional and delightful holiday experience.

It’s A Luxurioius Hol

Palm Springs and the other eight other cities in Coachella Valley are experiencing an unprecedented growth of visitors. Visitors want to relax and soak up the sun in this tropical desert paradise, advertising it has 350 days a year. Plus, there is an influx of people moving here and making the Valley their home. People have discovered that the views, activities, and weather continue to cause a sense of awe each day. Interspersed with clouds, the sun often provides an ever-changing scene on the surrounding mountains.

Staycation at Omni Rancho Las Palmas

Amid a hectic schedule with limited open days on my calendar, a delightful opportunity presented itself in the form of an invitation from a public relations firm. The proposal was to experience a luxurious stay at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas. With no restrictions imposed by the public relations firm, the stage was set for a rejuvenating staycation at this upscale resort. Admittedly, I -98- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

had never been on the resort’s grounds, so that it would be a new adventure nine miles from my Palm Springs residence.

Arrival at the Luxury Resort and Spa

Arriving at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas, I drove through the well-landscape driveway profuse with flowers, all the way to the covered grand entrance. I exited the car and walked into a high-ceiling lobby with overstuffed chairs and a giant centerpiece of white orchid plants of various heights proudly displayed on a dark, round wooden table.

Check-in went smoothly. I was instructed to head out the door and follow Chris in the golf cart to the parking lot, where my car would stay for 2.5 days without moving it. I felt there would be plenty to do to keep me occupied, and I proved right.

Room with a view

While opening the door to my room, I witnessed the sunlight beaming in at the far end through the French doors. I put my suitcase on the stand and explored the expansive space that would be my staycation home. I walked to the French doors, which opened to a patio with a small table and

Straight ahead of me was a pond surrounded by tall palm trees, welcoming the swans and ducks enjoying a leisurely morning in the Valley. The amenities in the room, including a Keurig coffee

When I arrived for our dinner reservation at the bluEmber, they were already seated and waiting for one of the craft cocktails created by the mixologist. They marveled about the resort and hadn’t even had a tour. Unfortunately, the patio was closed due to extreme heat, but the indoor ambiance was enchanting.

Delectable appetizers and main courses, including salmon and braised short ribs, left an indelible impression. We had no reluctance, having boxed up what could not be consumed because the chef’s creations were too good to leave a morsel behind.

Lunch - It was time to catch up with another local, so I invited her to lunch. Again, she arrived and was pleasantly surprised at the resort’s ambiance. The luncheon menu offered a variety of items, but both of us ordered the Cobb salad. It was indeed one of the best Cobb salads I have ever tasted. We paired it with a glass of Pino Grigio. We both agreed it was an outstanding lunch. Breakfast at the Resort With large meals for dinner, there was no craving for a big breakfast. Thus, I went to the deli-like Palms Café directly across the courtyard from the bluEmber. I was delighted with my yogurt cup topped with generous fresh fruit and sprinkled with granola. If you want to eat poolside, there are a variety of options.

When one thinks of relaxing, one cannot help but think about getting a massage to help relieve the tension built up during an active lifestyle. My appointment was made, and I headed to the spa’s serene environment. I intended to take full advantage of the space with a sauna, hot tub, and steam room. My relaxation continued with a blissful massage by Stephanie. She used organic lotions with delightful aromas. Walking out of there, I smiled, acknowledging I was getting into this whole staycation thing. Walking to the private

While I haven’t experienced it, I can only imagine the pool area with a waterslide and lazy river would be an outstanding hit with children. This pool area is a space where you can spend an entire day. The third pool is a golf cart ride away. In this environment, you can curl up with your book and observe the quiet, except for the birds singing, while your drinks are brought to you.

As my staycation drew close, I reflected on the relaxing experience. I hadn’t opened my computer. I made no work phone calls. I had in-person conversations over meals with friends I hold dear, something I rarely do. My body felt relaxed, and I could tell creativity was once again revived. The staff provided me with everything I needed and more. After dinner on my last night, an espresso martini awaited me in my room, underscoring that a luxury resort staycation’s special touches offer more than relaxation. You can imagine, this relaxed, happy woman was all smiles on her way home.

Jack Frost to Lead a Grand Snowball Fight Frostburg is a place where townspeople transform into elves! Yes, you read that right. An event that started in 2004 with the intent of creating a small winter holiday celebration to emphasize the importance of reading has evolved into a beloved tradition for townspeople and visitors alike.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, “Storybook Holiday” is scheduled for Saturday, December 2. The annual event features the ever-popular Elf Olympics, in which teams of elves compete in such “elf skills” as wrapping presents, tossing baked goods and decorating trees. Other highlights include a parade that’s lead by Jack Frost (fitting for a town named Frostburg), story times for kids, interactions with elves and Santa, a proper Christmas market, and even “Cocoa with the Po-Po,” which is hot chocolate stand operated by the town’s police department. The afternoon ends with a townwide snowball fight – led by Jack Frost, who’s riding a fire

to wear their favorite pajamas for the experience.

While Storybook Holiday takes place on just one weekend each year, the destination is decked out for the entirety of the season. Elsewhere in town, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, which travels between the historic depots in Frostburg and the neighboring town of Cumberland, offers riders a fun and festive way to get into the holiday spirit with Polar Express™ train rides. These one-hour rides, inspired by the hit movie, began in November and continue on select dates through December 24. Of course, passengers are invited

Speaking of neighboring Cumberland, that town will host a Winter Holiday Market featuring artisans and vendors on three consecutive Saturdays (November 25, December 2 and 9). In short, this region of Western Maryland is everything you think of when you’re imagining a Hallmark movie! Located in the heart of Branson’s Entertainment District, the Branson Wheel is electrified with more than 144,000 individual lights that all “dance” to classic Christmas tunes.

Old-Fashioned Christm

Something about the holidays makes us long for simpler times. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of days gone by or the wonder of a child seeing the Christmas tree lit up for the first time. Maybe it’s the scent of fresh pine mingling with the aroma of holiday treats. It’s hard to say but even with all the technology that exists today, the

mind has a way of drifting toward a bygone era at this time of year. If you yearn for that simplicity, there may be no better place to enjoy a vintage holiday season than in Whitehaven MD. For those seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Whitehaven offers Victorian charm and tranquility along the Wicomico River. This tiny town, proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places and

Uniquely Western Mas

“The question is not what you look The land that is now Massachusetts has had an indigenous presence since the glaciers retreated and exposed rich land. The first permanent European settlement in New England was established by the Pilgrims in 1620 on Mohegan and Wampanoag land. Legend states that the following year the first Thanksgiving was held between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag. Squanto, a native who had been captured, enslaved in Europe and returned to his homeland, functioned as a translator. #VisitMa Colonists quickly moved to Western MA’s Northampton, 81-miles from Boston, in 1654. They hoped to obtain cultivable land and lucrative opportunities to barter with the indigenous people. Northampton was deemed Paradise City by Jenny Lind in 1920 because of its enviable geography amid farmland, the meandering Connecticut River, originally the Kwinitekw, and the Western Massachusetts Mountains. visithampshirecounty.com In 1638 The first MA documented slave ship, The Desire, brought captives from the Caribbean to sell. Calvin Coolidge

Northampton was always progressive and in the 1800s it was a home of radical abolitionism and had several documented Underground Railroad sites. When the abolitionist settled there they established a silk mill and named the area Northampton Association of Education and Industry. All members,

black and white held equal shares in the mill and males and females had voting rights. The enactment of the Fugitive Slave Act essentially ended the community. Fugitives were no longer safe there and moved to Canada. The community attracted prominent African Americans, Frederick Douglass, David Ruggles and Sojourner Truth. WELLSBORO - Imagine Christmas trees without ornaments. During World War II, that is almost what happened. A small town in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, labeled Wellsboro, is a quintessential Christmas Village along Route 6 and nestled in the Allegheny Mountains came to the rescue. It is home to an extraordinary holiday story that is a part of history you may not know.

The Town That Save He eventually turned to Corning Glass and asked them to help him find a solution. Corning Glass stepped up to the plate. The Wellsboro Corning factory produced lightbulbs less than fifty miles from Corning headquarters. It was at the forefront of advancements in providing safe, indoor, electric lighting and was renowned for its productivity and innovations.

Let’s look at how it all began and why Wellsboro, “The Town That Saved Christmas,” should be on your Christmas travel list.

The Wellsboro Corning factory was instructed to change the light bulb production to glass ornaments. The factory already had a highspeed ribbon machine and, once retrofitted, could mass produce the ornaments labeled “Shiny Brite.”

The Penn Wells Hotel hosted our visit. All opinions are my own.

History

Prior to World War II, the majority of Christmas ornaments were made of blown glass and imported from Germany. When Adolph Hitler’s forces invaded Poland, and the war was underway, there was a British blockade of goods from Europe, and the United States would no longer receive the 250 million ornaments imported each year. No one in the States was creating ornaments. Retailers would lose money, and

-124- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

trees would have no ornaments. German immigrant Max Eckardt, who handled the distribution of ornaments to the F.W. Woolworth Company and other stores, knew he had to find a solution to the problem quickly. He wanted to find a producer of ornaments on U.S. soil.

Made In U.S.A.

The deal provided a United States manufacturing base for the ornaments, and Eckardt could also promote ornaments “Made in U.S.A.” He also designed the original Shiny Brite ornament boxes with Uncle Sam shaking the hand of Santa Claus. It was a win for all

involved. In the first year of operation, Wellsboro’s Corning employees produced over 40 million Shiny Brite ornaments and stocked the shelves in stores all over America. Your grandparents probably purchased Shiny Brite ornaments for their tree. The Shiny Brite manufacturing tradition continued for several decades, and the quaint town of Wellsboro took great pride in the notoriety as “The Town That Saved Christmas.”

Shiny Brite Ornaments Wellsboro manufactured 90% of all Christmas Ornaments worldwide from 1940 through 1979. The ornaments were sold at Ben Franklin, Woolworth, and J.J. Newberry stores.

As the years passed, they updated and improved their processes. A gentleman from Wellsboro developed the shrink wrap process, taking images from artwork and photos and printing them on the ornaments. They began making popular shaped ornaments such as Santa Claus and bells. If you are fortunate enough to find a

Shiny Brite Ornament box, it most likely does not list Wellsboro, PA, as the address. They list “Made in the U.S.A. or a New Jersey address that was the address of Max Eckard’s company. But all Shiny Brite ornaments were made in Wellsboro. Eventually, plastic replaced the glass ornaments, and demand dropped significantly. The Corning glass plant that created the Shiny Brite ornaments and shaped the town’s industrial legacy closed in 2016. Shiny Brites Still on Display You can still view some beautiful Shiny Brite ornaments in Wellsboro. The Penn Wells Hotel lobby hosts a year-round

display of Shiny Brite Ornaments, which form a large American flag. The Wellsboro Division of the Corning Glass Works (CGW) created the flag made of Shiny Brite ornaments to honor returning World War II veterans in 1946. The flag appeared in LIFE magazine and was eventually gifted to the Penn Wells Hotel. Holiday Events in Wellsboro During December, Christmas trees and wreaths placed on gas-lit lamp posts decorate the main streets of Wellsboro. Wellsboro hosts two holiday events in December: Dickens of a Christmas and Christmas on Main Street.

Dickens Of A Christmas

Wellsboro is known for its “Dickens Of A Christmas” celebration sponsored by the Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce. The annual Victorian event attracts over 30,000+ visitors each year during the first weekend in December. Main Street becomes an early December, 2023 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -125-

Victorian marketplace featuring food and drink, gift items, and fun entertainment to rekindle the old-fashioned Christmas spirit. Attendees enjoy quartets, choirs, street performances, characters, and more.

Christmas on Main Street Celebration

They hold the Christmas on Main Street event the second weekend of December. The Christmas on Main Street celebration highlights “The Town that Saved Christmas” and the Shiny Brite ornaments. Over 30 displays of the historic ornaments made locally in the early 1940s are on display at various locations in Wellsboro. Horse-drawn wagon rides, live reindeer, and a live nativity scene are available.

Where to Stay When You Visit

To experience Wellsboro’s historic nostalgia, I recommend staying at the Penn Wells Hotel, located on Main Street. It is near all the ac-126- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ December, 2023

tivities, and everything is within walking distance. They have a restaurant and a tavern on-site. The hotel is beautifully decorated during the holidays and is a showcase for the Shiny Brite ornaments with the flag, Shiny Brite ornaments decorating a tree, and a large wreath made of Shiny Brite ornaments of different sizes. The Penn Wells Lodge is right down the street if you prefer modern accommodations including an indoor heated pool and hot tub. Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, with its rich history, picturesque scenery, small-town charm, and unique seasonal festivities, is an ideal

destination for the holiday season. Visiting “The Town That Saved Christmas” during the Christmas season will create extraordinary holiday memories.

Holiday Trains Are F

Trains became synonymous with Christmas as a means of travel during the Golden Age of railroading. Today, volunteers and spirited enthusiasts keep the flywheels turning on independent railways for the entertainment of locals and tourists. There has been a resurgence of interest in recreational train travel on small rail lines, which has spurred everything from murder mystery dinners on the tracks to luxury wine pairings through scenic countrysides. Beginning in November and up until Christmas Day, many railroads—especially in Pennsylvania—invite guests to climb aboard a holiday train for some old-fashioned, wholesome fun. Pennsylvania offers “the most prolific collection of railroad attractions throughout the country,” says American-Rails.com.
