Up Close: From the Editor There’s magic entwined in the holiday season and the Lord knows we certainly need an extra dose of it this year. Or perhaps a new song just released for visit with Santa himself at Silver Dollar City in your listening pleasure. Some will see Branson, MO. it in their children’s eyes when they see Santa for the very first time. Others will be guided to the kitchen with the tempting aromas from fresh baked cookies. Maybe the magic will be revealed in the plot of a new Christmas movie or even in the memory of a favorite classic rerun. Some will experience the magic as they create decorations for their tree or possibly during a round of Christmas trivia with the family. For me, it’s on Christmas Eve at our church candlelight service - remembering the true reason for the season in the first place. The soft music, the scriptures, the candle lighting, and well wishes from others in attendance blend together to create a huge serving of Christmas magic. Could it possibly be hidden in one of the places you will go or something you will do or someone you will see? If you need a little help to find your Christmas magic, here are several pages of ideas. Cooking With a Purpose: It’s M Holidays are full of . . . what’s the word I’m searching for? . . . MAGIC! Aw, who are we kidding? Holidays are full of WORK! So, is it worth it? In times past, we would shop for and select just the perfect tree, then figure out a way to get it home. Once this was accomplished, we had to decide where to put it which included rearranging the furniture to make room for it, and then set it up. The next step of the process was adding lights, decorations, tinsel . . . and PRESENTS! Was it worth it? As the years rolled by, it became two or more trees, events, parties and dinners. One December, I hosted six separate parties. Was it worth it? (Okay, so that year, one session of decorating was utilized multiple times making it time well-spent.) A couple of these had carry-in menus, but the rest were sit-down dinners. Let’s discuss menu options. For the sake of space, let’s focus only on the family gathering on Christmas day. I don’t know why we felt it necessary to make a list because we always made the same entrees, side dishes and desserts. We even knew who was making what. Was it worth it? Somehow, no one seemed to grasp the concept which required the hostess to clean house for days. She also made grocery
lists by the dozen to make sure all necessary ingredients were on hand. Don’t even get me started on the time required to wash all the china to remove any dust collected since the previous year, not to mention hours spent setting a beautiful table. Don’t forget she also spent numerous days cooking, then in the aftermath spent several more days doing it all in reverse as part of the recovery process. Was it worth it? When we try to delegate some of the extra work involved in hosting, great wailing and gnashing of teeth takes place. Everyone wants

to do what we’ve always done when we gathered at someone else’s house. AKA tradition. Was it worth it? Why did we do all this? And why do we still do it? I believe it is because of the memories attached to our traditions. What no one seems to remember is that all our little repeated rituals had to have been started sometime by someone. And you know what? At the time, it was a totally new concept! I’m grateful they liked what we did and therefore want to do it again in an effort to recapture their cherished childhood. But what ever happened to trying something different once in a while? This year, it seems nature has helped us along with that. What a year! I’ve never been through anything like this. Is it still 2020? All year we’ve been hearing some much repeated catch phrases such as ‘These are difficult times,’ and ‘in these unprecedented times.’ ‘There is uncertainty everywhere you look,’ is a good one but my personal favorite is ‘things are different this year.’ With that in mind, I’ve decided this is the year to branch out and try something new! Will it be worth it? Time will tell. I’m thinking it will be necessary
Magic to ease into the newness rather than flaunt it during the peak of our festivities. To that end, instead of making an egg casserole or cinnamon rolls for breakfast, I plan to make something more Christmassy. And what says Christmas better than gingerbread? Everyone is familiar with gingerbread men and/or houses, but in the interest of being different, I plan to make Gingerbread Waffles. Mix together: ½ c. molasses 6 tablespoons oil 3/4 c. milk 2 beaten eggs In separate bowl, mix 3 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ginger ½ teaspoon cinnamon 4 tablespoons sugar 2 c. flour Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients. Stir just until large lumps disappear. Allow the batter to rest while preheating the waffle iron. Bake in waffle iron to desired crispness. Serve with maple syrup or apple butter. Garnish with whipped cream and chopped pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon, or chopped apples and raisins. This is a recipe that just might start a new tradition. Family members will remember and have the desire to recreate the memory for years to come. So again I ask, is it really worth it? You betcha! Now go forth and create your own magic! Bellingrath Gardens and Home presents the 25th Anniversary Season of Magic Christmas in Lights in 2020. The dazzling nighttime display features more than 1,100 set pieces, 3 million lights and 16 scenes, set out in a walking tour throughout the 65-acre Garden estate. A new scene has been created in honor of the 25th Anniversary Season. Here are details about the show: • The show will continue nightly through Jan. 3, 2021, rain or shine. • Magic Christmas in Lights has become a must-see tradition for visitors from the Gulf Coast region and beyond. Families enjoy strolling along the paths together, taking holiday photos, drinking cocoa on Live Oak Plaza, visiting Santa Claus and shopping in the Bellingrath Gift Shop. • Made in Alabama: Many guests do not realize that Magic Christmas in Lights is a made-in-Alabama attraction. Magical Train Ride
MENDOCINO - Make wonderful Christmas memories aboard the Skunk Train. The culture is so distinctive and unlike anything you find elsewhere in the United States that you often feel like you’ve ventured into a different land ... and in a year like this one, when international travel is pretty much off the table, Louisiana could fill a void. The state even has its own Christmas traditions. You know about Santa Claus – aka St. Nicholas or Kris Kringle – but in Louisiana even HE is a little different. Here the kids wait for “Papa Noel,” a modification of a character that the Cajuns brought from their homeland, France. In France he’s called “Pere Noel” – Father Christmas – and he leaves little gifts in children’s shoes as Christmas Eve turns into Christmas Day. In Louisiana, Papa Noel has become an extra-special part of local holiday traditions. He’s Cajun and lives in the swamps, not the North Pole. And because the weather is warmer here and there’s no snow, Papa Noel can’t have reindeer or a sleigh. So, he loads gifts into his pirogue – basically a special Cajun canoe that’s great for navigating the waterways around these parts – and gets pulled through the swamps by a team of eight alligators. On Christmas Eve he travels the rivers and bayous of Louisiana, guided by bonfires that residents have lit along the shores

Rock Climbing Santa
Santa returns to Chimney Rock State Park this year for a Christmas Eve practice run. Festivities will be held outdoors, and guests can stop into the Sky Lounge for hot cocoa and Christmas cookies. When Charlotte Motor Speedway opens the gate for the 11th edition of Speedway Christmas presented by Count On Me NC this weekend, fans will be treated to the biggest and brightest holiday lights spectacle yet at the iconic speedway. MARION - The Marion County Fairgrounds comes to “light” each evening with the holiday magic of the “Christmas by Candlelight.” Celebrating its 24th season, simply drive through the more than 45 acress by following the road lined with luminaries and view thousands of Christmas lights and displays throughout the Marion County Fairgrounds. New displays are featured every year, so it will be a different experience every time you visit, according to fair director Cindy Wood. A popular favorite by many, there will again be live nativity scenes on the weekends in December which are made possible by performances of different churches within the community. This year, Wood said, a boy’s club and girls’ club are also volunteering to stage the nativity scene. The light show is run by the Marion County Agricultural Society with financial support from many businesses and organizations. Volunteers, seasonal workers, and members of the fair board started setting up the massive display the first week of September, Wood said. Although repairs were needed to some of the exhibits, most of them went up over the next six weeks. Blaze of Lights BLUFFTON - The 34th annual Blaze of Lights will put a new spin on Bluffton traditions. The Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce and village Cultural Affairs Committee have updated celebrations to include a video Town Crier presentation, caravan tour of holiday lights, and a free drivein movie. Each year, the Blaze of Lights has a theme for storefront decorations and parade floats. In 2020, that theme is “You can’t stop Christmas from coming”-the conclusion of the classic Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas. “We are very excited about our modified events, which are designed to help keep families and friends safe,” explained Paula Scott, Chambe of Commerce CEO. Holiday music and decorations will be enjoyed throughout the downtown area through Jan. 1. This will include the Ream folk art collection, illuminated at 112 N. Main St. (Bluffton Presbyterian Church). Lighted garlands and snowflakes will line the main business district. Downtown businesses will compete in a decorating contest. Farmer Harry Ream and his wife Dorothy started making and displaying Christmas decorations in 1938. In the mid-80s, the Ream family donated 168 wood cutouts to the village. Dozens more have been added by artist Terry Mullenhour. Folks came from miles around to see Harry and Dorothy Ream’s painted wood cutouts, starting with a trio of white deer. In 2018, the display was added to
Ohio Tourism’s Holiday Lights Trail, bringing more visitors than ever from across the region. Now new events have been added to the fun, like Santa’s Caravan to tour a 6-mile loop of holiday lights. Santa will lead the procession of vehicles in an antique fire truck. Decorated vehicles are welcome. Participants need to register with the chamber at blufftonchamber@gmail.com. A a free drive-in movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) is shown to connect with this year’s theme. Spaces are limited and registration is required. Holidays at the Newport Mansions will be more spectacular than ever this year, with a new outdoor experience, “Sparkling Lights at The Breakers: An Outdoor Magical Wonderland,” illuminating the mansion and its historic grounds with thousands of lights Experience the wonders of Christmas at the Newport Mansions! November 21, 2020-January 10, 2021 - The Breakers and The Elms will be decorated in their traditional, lavish fashion for Holidays at the Newport Mansions. Admission will be by our regular tickets. The mansions will be closed on Thanksgiving Day
and Christmas Day, open on New Year’s Day. For the first time, the exterior of The Breakers and its landscape will be awash in festive lights, including 28 spruce trees strung with holiday lights along the two driveways; The Breakers façade bathed in colored light; and illumination of the historic paths, shrubbery and trees in varied color schemes as visitors stroll the grounds. The Children’s Cottage will be outlined in lights and visitors will be able to peek through the windows at Santa’s Workshop inside as Holiday music fills. Interior tours of The Breakers and The Elms are self-guided using the

free Newport Mansions audio tour app. Guests are encouraged to download the audio tour prior to arrival and bring their own earbuds. Walk off holiday excess at the 170-acre Riverbanks Zoo & Garden featuring two distinct parks with historic ruins along the scenic Lower Saluda River. The nationally recognized zoo houses more than 2,000 animals in natural habitats. Lights Before Christmas runs on plenty of evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. in November and December. Adams Homestead MCCOOK LAKE - Take a step back in time and get into the holiday spirit by touring through the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve site buildings decorated for the holiday season. The various buildings will be decorated in a more subtle earlier Christmas decor. Join in the fun from 12-4 p.m. November14and do a little shopping by visiting our vendors in the visitor center. Homemade goodies and Santa Clause will be there, too. This event is suree to be great fun for the whole family. Located near McCook Lake west of North Sioux City, the park entrance license iscnot required. Admission is Free. Spanning 1,500 acres along the Missouri River, this area was donated to the people of South Dakota in 1984 by Mary and Maud Adams, granddaughters of original homesteader Stephen Searls Adams. They envisioned the area as a place where people, particularly youth, could enjoy the land and learn more about the natural world surrounding them. Mary and Maud wanted to give others a “place for inner renewal.� Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve features close to 10 miles of limestone trails that wind through prairie, forest and along the riverbank. With over 100 species of birds, a variety of native plants and a number of different animals, visitors are immersed in nature. Restored historical buildings include: Lamont Country School, Sha/Adams House, Stavenger Lutheran Church and Brusseau Cabin. Tours of the buildings are available through reservation. Winter Lightfest
ABILENE - Winter Lightfest returns to Abilene even bigger and brighter in 2020, from Nov. 27 – Dec. 26. During its inaugural year in 2019, the colorful, festive holiday display attracted more than 42,000 visitors and raised more than $150,000 in support of United Way of Abilene and its 27 non-profit partner agencies. This year’s Winter Lightfest is presented by Christmas Décor and sponsored by the Dian Graves Owen Foundation. It will feature an outdoor, half-mile walking trail bedazzled with animated displays and a million twinkling lights. (See scenes from last year’s event here.) Along the tree-lined paths, visitors will find a mix of popular scenes from 2019 as well as new vignettes, and plenty of photo opportunities. Local choirs and
ensembles will provide festive, musical accompaniment. In the Christmas Village, there will be refreshments for purchase and Santa will be on hand for socially distanced visits and photos with children in his new two-row sleigh (kids will sit in front with Santa in back behind a Plexiglass divider.) Masks and hand sanitizer will be available at the event. Parking attendants and trail guides stationed along the walk will monitor grounds capacity and proper social distancing. Sturdy, comfortable, closedtoed shoes are recommended for the stroll along the surfaced walkways. For those who need assistance navigating the trail, chauffeured, 30-minute golf cart rides are available on Sunday evenings from 6 – 7 p.m., by advance res-
