Recipe For Life

Special Needs Groups N Like so many people, I have numerous responsibilities. I have a family to care for and a home to maintain plus a fulltime job. I even find time for extra-curricular activities and volunteer work. Still, there are people who wonder why I’m such a list maker. Approximately a year ago, I was asked for some suggestions regarding travel with people who have special needs, especially handicapped children. The list for this one is lengthy. For starters, carry any necessary paperwork with you. This includes phone numbers of parents, permission slips with secondary contact information, medications with instructions and information regarding personal care needs. If any medications need to be dispensed during your trip, have them handy and yet secure in their original packaging so the instructions and dosages are clearly written. Trying to rely on memory can be potentially dangerous. On day trips, prescriptions can be given pretty close to regular times, but don’t forget about -8- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ October, 2023

over the counter items which might be needed. Have the patient’s name clearly visible on the package to prevent a mix up. If parents/ guardians have given oral instructions, write them down clearly and keep with the specific product. Insulin, inhalers and epi pens are items which are used in a time-critical fashion, so be familiar with the process before leaving. In a crisis, there might not be time to look for, find, read and carry out instructions. In other words, be ready! I might also suggest an insulated tote bag for carrying some of these items. If anyone requires a medic alert bracelet or call button, be familiar with the specific issue requiring the usage of each. In addition to all the usual items you need, there is also mobility gear. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, strollers, scooters, and crutches are indispensable to a percentage of the population. If you don’t have specialized license plates for the disabled, make

Need Getaways Too sure you at least have a hanging handicapped tag. Service animals are being used more and more these days. The training has expanded from seeing eye dogs to include hearing impairment, seizure anticipation, low blood sugar prevention, emotional support during panic attacks or to prevent self-harm or stress. This is a good thing, but it will require a couple of additions to your lists. The animals will need their harness and/or leash, food, water, possibly treats and pitstops in a grassy area. After all that, it may seem like we’re ready to go. Not quite. We need to think about all the additional things we need to take along with us. Let’s discuss the most critical items first. For starters, if any of your travelers are non-verbal, remember to have their Nova Chat available and fully charged so they can express their needs. If needed, a wearable ID tag will help in the event of a lost person. We all know there are some who like to wander off on their own. As a precaution, make sure everyone knows what to do if they get separated from the group. Meet at the flagpole, a specific statue, the main gate or some other easily recognizable location. Remind them also to reach out to police, sheriff or security guards. Don’t forget to snap a

quick photo of your group at the beginning of the day. This way, you will know exactly what color clothes they are wearing and can describe them to authorities in the event someone gets lost. Besides, it makes a great memento for afterwards. I’ve seen groups who wear matching t-shirts on field trip day so it is easy to identify who belongs together. This is a great idea which is useful for children, families and senior citizens also. Just don’t select black shirts in the summer because it is way too HOT! While we’re on the subject of shirts, let’s discuss other clothing. We all know how to pack a diaper bag for babies. However, for children, teens and adults who are incontinent, most any form of bladder protection can become bulky. A backpack is a discreet way to always be prepared. This is always good advice along with a full change of clothes. This is especially handy for those with reduced motor skills. Spills, ripped seams, malfunctioning zippers, missing buttons and other accidents can be reduced from tragedy status to minor inconvenience. As an aside, spare dry socks and shoes are always October, 2023 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -9-

good if you plan to be anywhere near water. Remember, an umbrella is for the head and shoulders. Feet still get wet, especially if you have a puddle splasher in your group. Speaking of umbrellas, let’s discuss weather. It is always wise to check the weather in advance so you know if you will need a light jacket, windbreaker, sweater, rain poncho, a coat or full-fledged parka. The above-mentioned umbrella is not only good for protection from rain, it is also instant shade, especially if you forgot to pack sunscreen. For outdoor trips, add bug spray also. If you think this list includes all the bells and whistles, it doesn’t. At least, not yet. This list is constantly evolving. At a concert, a small cowbell is much easier than constant applause. Anyone with arthritic joints in their hands or someone with only one functional hand will like being able to express their pleasure with a performance without the pain usually associated with clapping.

-10- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ October, 2023

If you watched the movie Titanic, you may remember the whistle which was used to get the attention of the rescuers. One year for Christmas, I received just such a whistle as a gag gift. The joke was on the giver because I like having it and I use it. Granted, in most cases it is used to gain attention while coaching sports. But it works just as well on a bus to get the attention of a group of noisy excited chatterboxes. In a crowd at an amusement park, it works better than waving or yelling to find the rest of your group. Here’s an idea worth remembering: when traveling in large groups requiring a bus for transportation, have a chaser vehicle. It can be used for sending home someone who is not critical, but net feeling well. Or I have heard of teachers who use if to send home a misbehaving student. It’s amazing how well behaved everyone else is after something like that happens. In fact, I was asked to drive an escort car once because it is easier to put an injured person in a car and go get help than

it is to round up the whole crew and take a bus to the ER. If you are anything like my family, you travel with snacks. We try to avoid empty calories and select healthy options since most of the munching is from boredom rather than actual hunger. This limits the options a bit as does the weather. We all know chocolate in any form is likely to melt and make a huge mess in the process. Finding healthy choices which are easily portable, yet tasty and not messy to eat are rare indeed. Therefore, frequent stops for snacks or a light meal is something we must consider when planning our travel schedule. Otherwise, it might be easier to ask everyone to bring their own snack. Recently, I agreed to go along on a school field trip to be a caregiver for one special needs child. What was I thinking? With a bit of prep time and a good complete list, field trips can be fun and educational. However, the list is two pages long just for a trip to Walmart. But wait; there’s more! We are stopping for lunch while out and about. This begins a whole new chapter of all the things to remember about dietary restrictions. We have students who cannot eat one or more of the following items: sugar, salt, gluten, dairy, seafood, nuts, red dye, berries or citrus. And this does not even include preservatives such as monosodium glutamate which can wreak havoc on sensitive digestive systems. Imagine the headache involved to get food ordered for a group when each one has allergies, food preferences, and special preparation requests. In addition, there is the issue of knowing the amount of money available for each since most don’t understand the value of currency. In many cases, fast food isn’t fast for this group. Plus, these students require a bit of extra time to actually finish eating. Whew! No wonder most stay home a lot. But they are people too and need occasional shopping trips and fun. So be appreciative of the ones who do this job of helping special needs

students navigate through new experiences. This is not a field trip for these volunteers; it is a job involving constant diligence and work. Rest assured they have done their prep work to make your loved one’s trip a pleasant experience. It allows parents and caregivers a few hours of peace, quiet, rest and a much need breather. Speaking of a break, depending on the activity, it might be wise to plan a midday rest period. If the students don’t need it, the caregivers sure do. A couple of other things which might come in handy are earplugs, sunglasses, visors, hair ties, sun hats and baseball caps. So, there you have it: the complete list . . . almost. It may seem like you have everything except the kitchen sink. You guessed it. Take that too in the form of wet wipes or a wet washcloth in a zipper bag. Now, I wonder what I should pack for myself. Perhaps I’ll start with a pillow for a quick snooze on the trip home, a blanket and earplugs. Hmmm, I think I need to make a list!

ops Patrick Mahomes’ soared by over 12 times the average volume compared to the last seven days, an unprecedented increase in fans looking to purchase the jersey as worn by Kelce, according to Google search data analysis. Further analysis reveals demand for Kelce’s jerseys is at the highest point since the Super Bowl LVII, which reached the highest point of all time. For the first time in history, search demand has overtaken star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who led the Chiefs to victory at the Super Bowl LVII in February. At the height of search interest, demand for Travis Kelce jerseys dwarfed Mahomes’ by over 2,000% over the last seven days. After winning against the Chicago Bears, demand for Patrick Mahomes jerseys has also seen an 819% rise compared to average levels over the last seven days. Searches for Kanas City Chiefs jerseys and tickets also surged by 1,974% and 1,853%, respectively. A spokesperson from Replay Poker commented on

the findings: “Taylor Swift and Kelce’s dating rumors have drawn intense public attention, causing interest in the Chiefs’ tickets and jerseys to skyrocket. It’s fascinating to see that demand for Kelce’s jersey overtook Mahomes’ only after Taylor Swift was pictured. This shows just how influential the star and her legions of followers are.

Swift has over 273 million followers on Instagram alone, around 88 times that of Kelce, demonstrating just how powerful her fandom is and how it can cause record-breaking search increases. This could result in ticket prices for Chiefs’ games skyrocketing as fans clamor to catch a glimpse of the budding couple together, and could well raise the profile of Kelce and his teammates to new heights.” October, 2023 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -13-

A perennial national championship contender, watching a University of North Dakota ice hockey game is like watching an exhibition of future pro hockey players. Nearly every player on the Fighting Hawks roster is a National Hockey League draft pick or a coveted free agent. The concourse showcases the school’s hockey history, with trophies, photos, sweaters, and sculptures on display.

With eight national titles in 22 trips to college hockey’s Frozen Four, the Hawks also annually compete for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference championship trophy. With the pep band belting out a variety of songs - including “In Heaven There is no Beer” polka - fans cheer loud and often as Hawk players make big hits on the ice or take impressive shots, with the puck sneaking past the opposing goaltender for a score. Delicious Delights

At Haunted House “The only thing Scary...is How Good the Food is!”

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS - The Haunted House Restaurant in Cleveland Heights is an absolute gem! From the moment I walked in, I was transported to the thrilling world of 80s horror movies. The decor is incredibly detailed and perfectly captures that spooky, nostalgic vibe. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the exceptional service. The staff is not only attentive and friendly but also fully committed to enhancing your dining experience. They go above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and ensure that you’re having a great time. As for the food, it’s simply delicious. The menu offers a wide range of options to satisfy every palate, and the quality is topnotch. For breakfast, let’s start with “The Haunted Waffle.” You have a choice of colorred, green, black; or if you aren’t that brave, you can simply order regular. The best part? It’s only $5.99. For a heftier appetite, choose Rosemary’s

Platter with three eggs any style, hash browns, bacon or sausage and Texas Toast. If you are really, really brave and want to explore something completely different, I suggest the “Texas Chainsaw Burger. You will just have to try it on your own to learn what the “massacre” sauce is. The brunch menu is available from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on weekends from Fri. - Sun. Dinner is served 4-10 p.m. Tues. - Thur., 5-11 Fri. & Sat. and 5-10 p.m. Sun. Starting with an appetizer you have the choices of items like “Nightmare on Elm Street Corn (Choose from “Stranger Things,” to “Chucky Rolls,” or “Frankenfish Tacos (5 *s). Next comes a Lurch burger or Creepy Seafood Pasta or Jerk Silence of the Lamb Chops. There is also a children’s menu. Whether you’re a horror enthusiast or just looking for a unique dining experience, The Haunted House Restaurant is a must-visit. I can’t wait to return for another thrilling meal! tragically killed on her wedding night wandering through a downtown hotel, and of the ghost of a Santa Fe socialite grieving the loss of a child still roaming the mansion where she lived. • La Fonda on the Plaza itself where several ghost encounters have been reported. These include a judge and frequent visitor to La Fonda (then the Exchange Hotel) who was murdered and still visits his old haunts.

• The Santa Fe Plaza, where ghosts of a Spanish soldier killed in battle and a notorious Wild West outlaw have purportedly been seen roaming the streets at night. • The Barrio de Analco, where a headless horseman is believed to ride the streets. • The Santa Fe River, where a wailing woman is said to snatch away children who unwittingly get too

Going Global: Cruising

The Best Choice For A A cruise is one of the best possible vacation options for group travel. Travel is one of the most wonderful and enriching experiences, and traveling with friends can make your trip even more enjoyable. My husband and I have taken multiple trips with groups of friends, and we’ve found cruising to be the best choice and most enjoyable for all. Here are nine reasons why cruising is the best choice for a group trip:

Less Planning is Needed

The logistics of a group trip can be a nightmare and very time-consuming. Cruising takes a lot of the planning and overwhelm out of the pictures. Our last cruise was with some of my high school friends. We knew we wanted to visit Europe to celebrate a friend’s birthday. He lives in Belgium, and the rest of the group lives in the U.S. When we started thinking about logistics, it all seemed overwhelming. After we decided on a cruise, much of the planning was done for us.

Finances - Get More For Your Money

One person’s budget could be much larger than another’s. Cruising is a great deal whether you are on a fixed income or have money to splurge. You have choices in cabin options, drink options, and excursions. Everyone can control how much or how little they spend while still spending time with the group. And in most cases, cruising is a bargain. You get three restaurant meals, snacks, and your room, plus your transportation from port to port for $75 to $200 per day

-20- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ October, 2023

on average during a cruise. Where else can you find that kind of bargain?

By Robin O’Neal Smith Freelance Travel Writer ExpertContentCreation.com

A Group Trip

ing cards, shopping, spas, saunas, exercise rooms, shows, swimming, and so much more. You can do as much or as little as you desire. Everyone in your group can be entertained in the way they choose.

Everyone Can Do What They Enjoy

It can be nerve-racking when everyone has a different opinion of what to do each day or goes at a different pace. You don’t have to worry about that on a cruise because, during the day, everyone can pick what they like to do. Whether going on excursions in port or on the ship during a sea day, no one has to do the same thing. There is a lot of variety and something to suit just about everyone.

Boredom Doesn’t Happen

It is challenging to be bored on a cruise ship. There is always something to do if you wish to do it. There is plenty to do for anyone of any age on a cruise ship. Think movies, bowling, bingo, gambling, dancing, dance lessons, art galleries, listening to music, reading, play-

Lots of Food Choices and No Cooking

There are multiple items on the menu for every meal, and if you want something other than a sit-down meal, you can go to a casual buffet or fast food options. All can have whatever they desire, and no one has to cook. You are on complete vacation. Every meal, snacks, coffee, and tea are prepared for you. You don’t even have to meal plan. Everything is done for you regarding food during your entire cruise.

No Chance of Getting Hangry

Allowing parties to become hungry and stressed is a recipe for a group trip disaster. When cruising, you don’t have to worry about it. Everyone will enjoy three full meals daily, and snacks are available anytime if desired. October, 2023 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -21-

There is very little chance friends in your group will become hangry and ruin the fun.

Group Time vs. Individual Time

Too much togetherness can sometimes cause people to become grumpy and difficult. When cruising with a group, you can have as much group time doing things together as you want and then go your separate ways when desired. We enjoyed having breakfast and dinner together in the main dining area on the group cruises. During the day, we each did our own thing. Sometimes, a couple of us would be together; other times, we went different ways for an excursion or activity. It was fun getting back together for dinner to discuss what everyone did that day. After dinner, some would see a show, others might gamble. Then, we would reconvene and find a place to chat or listen

-22- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ October, 2023

to music. Some in the group would turn in early, and others would dance the night away. Cruising makes it easy to have a mix of group versus individual or couple time.

Night Owls and Early Birds Can Easily Co-exist

When everyone stays in a house or condo for a group trip, those who stay up late often disrupt the sleep of those who turn in early, and the early birds are up making coffee and banging pans to cook, waking the night owls. You don’t have to worry about that on a cruise. Everyone in the group can adhere to their own schedule. My husband and I are night owls. We sometimes skipped breakfast on the cruise to sleep in. While others in the group hit the sack early, we might be up dancing till the music ended. We could all have the sleep schedule we desired without disrupting others.

Lalibela, in Ethiopia, is one such place. It is literally fabulous, “reminiscent of the fables”, and is a site of religious pilgrimage for all “the people of the book,” the Jews, Christians and Muslims. To better comprehend the Lalibala’s historic significance

you can access the story of the Queen of Sheba’s visit to King Solomon as related in the Bible, the Koran and the Kebra Nagast, Ethiopia’s national epic. Each book’s account differs slightly but generally they agree that the Queen of Sheba, Makeda, visited King Solomon after hearing of his wisdom. As a learned woman she is captivated by Solomon and he with her. Her visit extends to six months before she departs, pregnant with the king’s child.

By Renée S. Gordon History & Travel Writer

Once home she bears a son and names him Menelik, “son of the wise.” When Menelik is twenty he makes a trip to Jerusalem where his father acknowledges him and makes him King of Ethiopia and upon the death of Makeda in 950 B.C. Menelik I becomes the first Solomonic Ethiopian Emperor. The empire lasted in an unbroken line until the rule of Haile Selassie ended in a military coup in 1974.

Currently there is no archeological proof that the Queen of Sheba ever existed. There is debate about where Sheba was located and some scholars now claim it was in Yemen not Africa. Because of Ethiopian documentary evidence we know that Christianity was practiced in Ethiopia by 300 A.D. and the country was the second in the world, after Armenia, to become a Christian country and the Coptic Church is still the country’s national church. The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela owe their existence to the country’s extensive Christian history. Ethiopian King Lalibela was born of a governor and a maid in the village of Roha where his mother was exiled. At his birth in 1162 he is swarmed with bees and this was taken as a sign by his mother. She named him Lalibela, “the bees recognize his sovereignty.” It is said that he was always a devout and religious young man. Because he was a perceived threat to the throne he went into a 1,600-mile exile in Jerusalem in the 1100s. Upon his return to his country he learned that Jerusalem had fallen to the Muslims, led by Saladin, in 1187 A.D. Lalibela decided that he would build a new Jerusa-

lem in Africa as a home for Christian veneration and pilgrimage. The center was to be created in north-central Ethiopia on an 8,000-ft. escarpment in the region of the Zagwe Dynasty. He deemed that each structure should be created from a single block of stone, with no mortar, and as a result the structures are carved out of a single piece of soft volcanic rock including doors, ritual passages, windows and pillars.

There are a total of eleven churches carved in the hy-

pogean, rock-hewn, architectural style of the country. Workers began by drawing the contours of the church on the stone. They then proceeded to excavate the building using hand tools. Once the church was carved out they began to remove the stone from the interior. The construction took place from 1200-1224. Local lore tells us that the churches were constructed by angels. The 11 churches are situated in three zones and connected by hand-carved passageways. Six churches are in the northern zone, four in the southeastern zone and one church, Beta Giyorgis, the Church of St. George, that stands alone. A 5-day ticket for the 11 churches costs approximately $50 (US). I suggest hiring a guide in order to learn as much as possible about the decorations, history and archeology.

Beta Giyorgis is situated on a 72-by-72-foot dais with a 36-ft. deep plaza. The church is in the shape of a cross and is adorned with rooftop Greek crosses. Other architectural highlights include three doors and twelve windows. Beta Maryam, the Church of Mary, is an absolute must see. In the interior of the church there is a pillar that is inscribed with information on the construction of the church and has a replica of Christ’s tomb. Only priests are allowed to touch and read the pillars. Biete Medhani Alem, Church of the Savior of the World, has five aisles and is considered the world’s largest monolithic church. Beta Golgotha, Church of Golgotha, has large paintings of saints on the walls and is

believed to contain the tomb of Lalibela. Lalibela ended his life as a hermit after renouncing his title and is an Ethiopia saint. The remaining churches are Beta Masqal (Church of the Cross), Beta Danagel (Church of the Virgins), Beta Mika’el (Church of Michael), Beta Emmanuel (Church of Emmanuel), Beta Abba Libanos (Church of Father Libanos), Beta Merkurios (Church of Mercurius) and Beta Gabriel and Beta Rafa’el (the twin churches of Gabriel and Raphael). The various churches are decorated with symbols and paintings. The churches were inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in

1978. #unesco.org/en Tourists need a visa to enter Ethiopia. Once in Addis Ababa Lalibela is approximately 475miles from Addis Ababa and airplanes fly to its regional airport. From there it is 17-miles from the town. Short haul buses are outside the airport to take you into Lalibela. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Addis but the ride is minimally 9 hours. Once in town you will have access to accommodations at all price levels and restaurants. Remember this is an international tourist destination. Highlights of a visit are attendance at a Sunday morning mass. Grab your golden bucket and go. #visitethiopia.

She says her grandkids were the ones to choose international trips, but with her encouragement. “I would have taken them on any of the trips,” says Jean,” but I encouraged them to dream big so that there would be big adventures to be remembered that only we would share.” Road Scholar has been offering programs for grandparents and grandkids (often referred to in the travel industry as “skip-gen”) since 1985.

Jurassic Park D SPRING GROVE — Get set for a Jurassic-sized adventure when you visit Richardson Adventure Farm this season. With 2023 marking the 30th anniversary of “Jurassic Park,” the Richardson family landed on an intricate dino design for this fall’s corn maze. Just don’t tarry too long in the T. rex; there’s so much more to explore in this 28-acre maze! From a waterfall and Jeep to a braided adventurer and brachiosaurus, the fun meter is set for epic this year. “We always look for the anniversary of something spectacular, and dinosaurs are forever popular,” said George Richardson, who operates the farm along with his wife, Wendy, brother, Robert, Robert’s wife, Carol, George’s son, Ryan, and Ryan’s wife, Kristen. Shawn Stolworthy of MazePlay.com again designed the maze, which was planted in late June. The “World’s Largest Corn Maze” opens Saturday, Sept. 9, and will be open Thursdays through Sundays through Oct. 29, plus Monday, Oct. 9, for Columbus Day. The farm is located at 909 English Prairie Road, Spring Grove. -30- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ October, 2023

The maze features five maze games and everything from 10-minute trail options for parents with younger children to hour-and-a-half treks for intrepid corn crawlers. “There’s a left-turns-only route and a right-turns-only route,” Wendy Richardson said. “There are bridges to climb to get a view of where you are. Parents with little kids can walk in without worrying

about getting lost.” While the maze is amazing, it’s far from the only reason to check out the adventure farm. Giant slides, pedal karts, a recently upgraded train ride, a carousel, 50-foot viewing tower, pig races, large gift shop with a wine sampling bar, indoor restrooms, and, while in season, an additional sunflower maze all await. There are food trucks, a craft beer tent featuring 9th Hour Brew-

Add to that jumping pillows, air cannons, live music on weekends, Zorbing, a zip line — it’s an unparalleled day of fun in the fresh air.

“We have people come in who have never been here before who tell us ‘I thought I was coming to a little pumpkin patch, but holy cow!’” said Ryan Richardson. “We love seeing the smiles on families’ faces.”

Admission is $20 for ages 3-12, $24 for ages 13 and up

Dogs that are friendly and leashed are allowed — but watch out for that hungry velociraptor near the main corn maze entrance!

Speaking of pumpkins, those wanting to pick up a few will find 20 varieties of pumpkins and about a dozen varieties of gourds from which to choose. Sunflower lovers will find about 13 acres to explore, with 10 varieties of the popular fall flower in brilliant yellows, oranges and reds. Witnesses have reported hearing phantom footsteps, witnessing unexplained flickering lights, and even encountering a spectral presence in the dressing rooms. One of the most famous stories involves the spirit of a former stagehand who is said to still linger in the building. Whether you’re attending a live performance or exploring the theatre’s history, keep an eye out for the unexplained, as you may just encounter a ghostly guest.

Mantorville, a small historic town in southeastern Minnesota, is often dubbed “The Hub of Hauntings.” This reputation is well-earned, as the town boasts a multitude of haunted locations. The Mantorville Opera House, built in 1918, is said to be inhabited by the ghost of a former actress who continues to perform from beyond the grave. The nearby Hubbell House, a charming restaurant dating back to 1854, has a resident ghost known as “Lottie.” Lottie is said to be a playful spirit who occasionally rearranges silverware and causes light fixtures to flicker. Mantorville offers ghost tours that take you through these haunted sites and share the chilling stories that have made this town a paranormal hotspot. Whether you’re a seasoned ghost hunter or simply curious about the supernatural, these haunted destinations are not to be missed this season. Fishing & Hunting For A Guys Getaway Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of lakes, rivers and streams, where anglers can reel in a variety of freshwater species. Arkansas’ Lower Delta offers some of the best fishing you’ll find in The Natural State. Here are some great spots for anglers to try their luck. Bayou Bartholomew is the longest bayou in the world and it begins its journey northwest of Pine Bluff. The bayou flows over 350 miles before joining the Ouachita River in Louisiana. Over 100 species of fish have been documented in Bayou Bartholomew, making it one of the most diverse streams in North America. According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, “the bayou offers fishing for crappie, bream and catfish. Minnows,

jigs, spinners and light line are recommended for crappie and bream; fish for catfish on the bottom with worms, minnows and stink baits.” Outside Marianna is Mississippi River State Park and the St. Francis National Forest. Visitors find a variety of fishing options, including the St. Francis River and Hornor Neck Lake (also a great kayaking spot). Bear Creek and Storm Creek recreation areas both offer a handicap-accessible fishing pier. Bass, bream and catfish can be found in the lakes and rivers within the forest/park. Experience the thrill of hunting for small and large game in the numerous public hunting lands, national forests, wildlife management areas, and federal wildlife

refuges. Squirrel hunting is an exhilarating experience that can help hunters sharpen their skills for larger game, or simply provide a thrilling chase after these scurrying creatures. Either way, hunting these small game animals is an absolute blast for all ages. If you’re looking for a good hunt, going after squirrel can be a pretty productive choice for several reasons. Squirrel hunting is also less competitive than hunting for more popular species like deer and duck. Experience the natural beauty of Arkansas by staying in a cozy cabin. Whether you’re tucked away in the woods, atop a mountain or beside a rushing river, you’ll love the peace and serenity a cabin affords for a group getaway. Legend of Blood Mou

Legends of Blood Mountain Once Blood Mountain and the rest of the Appalachians in Northeast Georgia were part of the land of the Cherokees. They roamed at will in its green valley and brought forth abundant crops from its red clay. In spring, they watched the white dogwood flower in its bridal splendor. In summer, they shared the multitude of wild fruit and nuts: blackberries, wild strawberries, black walnuts-with the black bear and the raccoons. When the leaves on the mountains turned every shade from vivid yellow to flaming orange to scarlet red, they knew winter was approaching. That was a time of stark beauty and bone chilling cold. White snow would lie on the ground. The leafless trees would cast a sharp shadow on the earth. The crystal -74- | ExtendedWeekendGetaways ~ October, 2023

columns of ice would climb the steep cliffs. Always there was music; the babble of a rushing stream, the moan of the wind, and the song of the people blessed this beauty. Settlers Came The early European settlers arrived mostly after 1828, spurred by the gold found nearby; they stayed to farm the land. They brought their dulcimers, fiddles, and banjos, and sang of their mountain life. Sadly, the beginning of a way of life for the settlers chronicled the end for the Cherokees. Most were exiled to Oklahoma via the infamous Trail of Tears. Fortunately, a few remained behind and many more returned when they were able. History The Cherokee lifestyle has been wiped from their old

mountain home, but traces of their heritage have been indelibly stamped on the land. Legends say that many spirits of the early people remain. You will find many unexplained phenomena around Blood Mountain. Located on the outskirts of Blairsville near the Union/ Lumpkin county line, it is the highest point on the Georgia Appalachian Trail at 4,458 feet and Georgia’s second highest peak. It was revered by the Cherokee as the home of the Nunne’hi, or Immortals, the Spirit People, who lived in the highlands of Cherokee Country. Perhaps more than the legendary spirit people still linger atop Blood Mountain. The Cherokee say Blood Mountain earned its name from a famous battle they fought to

untain get the land from the Creeks. The battle they fought near here at Slaughter Gap on the mountain was so ferocious that the creeks ran red with blood of the many warriors who died here. Another persistent legend is that when the Cherokee were forced on the Trail of Tears, Blood Mountain was where they buried the gold they could not carry with them. Did they believe the spirits of the slain warriors and the Nunne’hi would guard it until they could return? The Cherokee have never returned to these mountains and the treasure has never been found. Are the Nunne’hi still guarding the treasure? One piece of evidence says they might. On the upper branch of Nottely River, which flows out of Blood Mountain, there is a hole in the ground, like a small well which emits an unexplained warm vapor that heats the air all around. It makes a nice warm place for hikers and wanderers, but don’t stay near it too long, because the Nunne’hi are said to still linger there. It is also called Walasi-Yi Interpretive Center and is a stop for hikers on the Appalachian Trail and popular with visitors as a place to find unique mountain gifts. There is a hostel for a night’s stopover. Since the trail begins at Springer Mountain, just 30 miles away, this is the first major stop. This

is the only place where the trail crosses through the building, so hikers must pass through it enroute to the Appalachian Trail’s end in Maine. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Along with the ghostly legends, a weird tradition has grown here. Hikers who have hiked the complete trail return and throw their hiking boots over a tree in front. Even the original name evokes a Cherokee legend. This is an excerpt from the 1977 National Register of Historic Places form. “Until the highway was built, the gap was known as Frogtown Gap, a name which had been used since the Cherokee inhabited the area. In fact, one historian says that Walasi was a great mythical frog in Cherokee lore who was the chieftain of the animal council and made his home high in the gap. Frogtown Gap was changed to Neel’s Gap about 1924 in honor of the engineer in charge of the highway construction.” For more on Georgia

MANIFESTING AND CASTING SPELLS

Voodoo isn’t a joke here. It’s a part of life, brought to Louisiana by enslaved West Africans whose religious traditions and rituals were mixed with ubiquitous Catholicism. A religion that embraces ancestors, nature, spirits, and lore, voodoo uses dance, chanting, music, incantations, and gris gris dolls — among other elements. Visit a traditional shop for a cultural immersion, reading, prayer

session, ceremony, or products from candles to elixirs. One that locals recommend is The Voodoo Spiritual Temple on North Rampart.

Dinner Cruise Along the River As the sun dipped below the horizon, I found myself aboard the BB River Boats, embarking on a truly unforgettable journey. Nestled in Newport, KY, across the river from Cincinnati, this evening promised a delightful blend of exquisite dining and stunning riverside views. I had the pleasure of experiencing the Admirals Dinner Cruise with my better half, which left me with memories to cherish. As I stepped onto the beautifully decorated BB River Boat, I was greeted by a friendly crew that made me feel right at home. The vessel was a picture of elegance, with its polished wooden interiors and charming décor. The boat offered both indoor and outdoor seating, and I opted for a seat on the open-air deck to fully immerse myself in the scenic beauty of the Ohio River. Our voyage began just as the Cincinnati skyline was starting to illuminate, creating a stunning backdrop for our adventure. The gentle hum of the boat’s engines and the rhythmic sound of water lapping against

the hull set the stage for a peaceful and relaxing journey. As we glided along the Ohio River, I couldn’t help but marvel at the picturesque views. To my right, the twinkling lights of Cincinnati’s skyline danced on the water’s surface. To my left, the Kentucky shoreline provided a serene contrast. The boat’s expert narration highlighted historical tidbits and local trivia, adding depth to the experience. The knowledgeable crew shared tales of the river’s storied past, making this cruise not only a feast for the senses but also a journey through time. One of the main attractions of the evening was the sumptuous Admirals Dinner. Awaiting us in the boat’s elegant dining room was a menu that promised culinary delights. I began my meal with a fresh salad, followed by a choice of entrée. I chose the succulent short ribs, which was cooked to perfection and accompanied by delectable sides. The wine selection was impeccable, with options to suit every palate.

By Norm Reed Co-Editor The attentive waitstaff ensured that every guest’s dining experience was seamless and enjoyable. It was evident that BB River Boats took great pride in offering exceptional cuisine AND top-notch service. As our cruise continued, we had the unique opportunity to witness the dazzling sight of the Cincinnati Reds’ Great American Ball Park from the water. The stadium’s illuminated façade, with its unmistakable Reds signage, was a sight to behold. As a baseball fan, this was an unexpected treat and added an extra layer of excitement to the evening. For anyone seeking a memorable evening filled with gourmet cuisine, scenic beauty, and a touch of local history, I wholeheartedly recommend the Admirals Dinner Cruise with BB River Boats. It’s an experience that leaves you with a warm heart, a satisfied palate, and cherished memories of the Ohio River’s splendor. I can’t wait to return and create more unforgettable moments on the water. October, 2023 ~ ExtendedWeekendGetaways | -87-

Painted Lady Bed & Brew ALBUQUERQUE - A twist on the traditional B&B concept, Painted Lady Bed & Brew is a 19th century former brothel and saloon and the first of its kind in New Mexico, adding to only a handful of unique bed and brew establishments in the country. Completely overhauled in 2015 with the hopes of bringing people together over a beer, the property is also said to be haunted. From an unknown female spirit to a beer-drinking spirit, the bed and brew seems to be a hot spot for paranormal CHAPEL OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE The Lady in Black is said to haunt the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Historic Old Town, and some believe her to be the scariest ghost in Albuquerque. the chapel from nowhere and sits on a bench, dressed all in black. Those who have seen her say that she prays, meditates and sometimes sobs. The allure of The Painted Lady Bed & Brew was multifaceted. Its illustrious history as a brothel and saloon intrigued me, and the promise of refreshments added to its appeal. For my mother, a different draw existed. She had a penchant for overloading the DVR with marathons of “The Dead Files” and relished the potential to stay somewhere haunted. Nowhere on the website did the property claim to host any ghosts, but with such a macabre past, she insisted there had to be a spirit or two floating around. The Painted Lady is a short walk from the adobe buildings of Old Town, making it an ideal base

for exploring the city. The hotel comprises only a handful of apartment-style suites, each adorned with a modern Southwestern aesthetic that enhances the sense of neighborhood intimacy. As you step out of your room, you’re greeted by a covered porch with hanging ristras of hatch chilies, desert flora, and inviting Adirondack chairs. Above the walkway, red string lights criss-cross, creating an enchanting ambiance. The patio is peppered with games for a relaxed evening. There’s a swing set and a cushioned fire pit for those looking to unwind under the starry New Mexico sky. A vintage, bright-red Albuquerque trolley car adds to the hotel’s unique charm. In 1809 A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty was published by Washington Irving and purportedly penned by Diedrich Knickerbocker, a New Yorker of Dutch descent, to remind people of the state’s Dutch heritage. He related tales of idyllic villages and peaceful people and achieved his goal when the people embraced the character of Knickerbocker as a stereotypical NY personality. In 1820 Washington Irving took on the task of recounting a mystical tale based on local lore and Dutch society of the era. The story takes place in Sleepy Hollow, an incorporated village about 32-miles from Manhattan, adjacent to Tarrytown. It was published in Irving’s collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., and said to have been found among Knickerbocker’s papers. Valley is documented as having been first inhabited by the Native American Weckquaesgeek and Sintsinct tribes. Legend has it that you may feel drowsy if you take a path along the river because a Native American shaman had placed a spell on the area to thwart enemy attacks. This may be the origin of the name. Hudson Valley inhabitants, from the native population on, felt there was something mystical about the land. Early Dutch settlers were superstitous and did not frequent places believed to be haunted. They also shared tales and it is the shiver-inducing tale of the decapitated horseman that was often recounted. Irving’s story revolves around a Connecticut schoolteacher who attends a local landowner’s a party, courts his daughter and makes his way home on a lonely road. The story takes place circa 1790. Ichabod Crane’s trail is well marked, easy to follow and includes all the significant sites from the legend. Crane’s one-room schoolhouse is an 1850 building in Kinderhook in use until the

Katrina Van Tassel’s home, scene of the party, was torn down in the 1800s and was replaced by the local high school. The Headless Horseman was a Hessian mercenary hired by the British during the American Revolution. He was beheaded in a battle about 8-miles from Sleepy Hollow and rises each night to search for his head. Crane first encounters the headless spirit, while riding home in what is now Patriot’s Park. The park was also the scene of the capture of revolutionary spy John André. He was hung and the event is remembered by the Captor’s Monument. The brook where Crane met the apparition still runs through the park. At this location Ichabod quickens his pace and misses the turn that will take him home. The Old Dutch Church and 3-acre Burial Ground date from 1685. The Dutch Coloni-

al Revival church was where Crane was choirmaster and the place where the horseman spends his days. Many famous individuals are buried here including Washington Irving, Elizabeth Arden and Andrew Carnegie. Maps of the burial plots are available on-site.

Washington Irving’s 1835 home, Sunnyside, is in Tarrytown. The house was designed in a mixture of architectural styles by the author and built around an existing 17th-century, 2-room, Dutch farmhouse. The house exhibits many original furnishings including his desk and books. The property has magnificent Hudson River views and is believed to be haunted by Irving himself. Hudson Valley’s Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze sets fire to the night at the Van Cortland Manor. The event is internationally recognized for its more than 4,000 awe-inspiring hand-carved pumpkins, 7,000 illuminated jack o’ lanterns, synchronized music and lights and thematic displays. In 1626 the Dutch West India Company brought 11 African male slaves, documented as “proud and treacherous,” into New Amsterdam. As the Dutch divided up the land into patents slaves were needed as workers and by 1664 their numbers had risen to 800. By 1710 New York was the site of the 2 largest slave sale sites in the nation. One of the patents, Philipsburg Mill mentioned by Irving in his book, was part of a farm with an enslaved staff of 23. Frederick Philipse migrated to the Hudson Valley in 1653 and quickly became the owner of 50,000-acres. In the late 1600s Frederick built a lucrative grist mill on the Pocantico River. The Philipses became one of the largest slaveholding families in the north. They engaged in the slave trade and established a trading post on the coast of Africa. Philipsburg Manor is now a Tarrytown museum that features the daily life of the enslaved on a farm through the researched lives of the slaves who actually lived there and interprets a holistic history of the slaves and landowners during that era. On September 2, 1609 the Halve Maen (Half Moon), captained by Henry Hudson, moored in New York Harbor and for 35days he and his 16-man crew explored the region. He was seeking a northern passageway to Asia for the Dutch East India Company. During his New York explorations he claimed the area for the Dutch and sailed up the 315-mile Hudson River (Muhhekunnetuk) noting its fertility, beauty and natural resources. Hudson’s explorations did lead to the founding of a series of settlements from what is now Lower Manhattan, native Manna Hatta, to sites in the Hudson Valley along the river. New Netherland was basically a free-trading colony and was initially established to trade with the indigenous people. It had a tacit policy of tolerance and was open to any immigrant hoping to become upwardly mobile. The population quickly became multi-ethnic and by 1643 eighteen languages were spoken in the colony. The character of early New York was shaped by the huge influence of Dutch colonists, culture and heritage and is still visible throughout the region in names, signature architectural styles, art and early history. The Wickquasgeck Trail was a northsouth native trade route prior to European contact. The Dutch called it Gentleman’s Way (Heeren Wegh) and used it to travel the entire 14-mile length of Manhattan and beyond to Albany. The 150-mile street is the longest in the country. When the British took over they renamed it Broadway. The mansion has its original furnishings and the views of the Catskills and Hudson River will take your breath away. parks.ny.gov/ historic-sites/staatsburgh.com The Van Wyck Homestead Museum is located on its original site, a native trading

route. The homestead served as Washington’s supply depot headquarters from 1776-83 and was the scene of visits by figures such as Sam and John Adams, Hamilton and Lafayette. There are 15 marked sites on the tour including the Bicentennial Monument and an ¼ scale outdoor bread oven. The house was built in 1732 with an addition in the 1750s on 959-acres. The interior of the home features Revolutionary artifacts including early portraits and original household items. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Contact fishkillhistoricalsociety.org for tours. Fishkill Dutch Reformed Church of Fishkill dates from 1716 when the congregation requested a closer church. Construction began in 1725. The small sanctuary, with a central cupola and hip roof, was built by residents and their enslaved workers. The cemetery is of interest because of the Dutch headstones. In 1890 Frederick Vanderbilt, grandson of Cornelius, purchased land in Hyde Park and built a 174-ft. long and 122-ft. wide mansion and gardens as a “country retreat” for $2,250,000 for construction and furnishings. The 4-floor mansion has 74 rooms with some 17.5-foot ceilings on the first floor, imported

marble, French tapestries and striking wood paneling. The mansion’s furnishings are all original including the European architectural element of a rail around Mrs. Vanderbilt’s bed. Tours should be booked in advance. Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum is a highlight of any Dutchess County visit. The sites connected with his life include Springwood, Val-Kill, monuments and his burial site. Tours are offered. Springwood was FDR’s only home. Built in 1793 it was renovated in a Colonial Revival style in 1850. A highlight of the house tour is the room where FDR was born. The stone house reflects its 1941 appearance. Eleanor Roosevelt did not get along well with her mother-in-law and as a result when FDR was away from the estate she had a retreat of her own, Val-Kill, from 1945-1962. Everything is as it was and every item reflects her interests, personality, civil rights advocacy and pursuit of international peace. Here she met world leaders and engaged in the world of diplomacy. The lives of both Franklin and Eleanor are presented chronologically in the museum with $6-million in exhibits. The galleries are filled with artifacts, photographs, short videos and interactive exhibits. A creative display gives visitors an opportunity to lift the weight of FDR’s braces and view a video about his paralysis and a file cabinet filled with examples of Eleanor’s FBI file and the contents of her handbag are compelling. On the lower-level visitors see the highlight of the museum, Franklin’s

personal car, a hand-controlled Ford Phaeton that even dispensed cigarettes. While exiting you walk through the archives for glimpses of stored artifacts. BLACK AMERICANS, CIVIL RIGHTS, AND THE ROOSEVELTS, 1932-1962, a comprehensive overview of the topic is on view until December 31, 2024. It is not to be missed. Hyde Park’s Cranberry’s at Tilley Hall is an ideal location to dine on delicious dishes in a historic, and haunted setting and immerse yourself in Dutchess County ambiance. The restaurant has stamped tin ceilings, NY tenement building tiles and oak floors and a bonus includes 3 resident spirits. The food is outstanding and I highly recommend the pancakes and their justifiably renowned scones. Don’t leave the county without an amble across the longest elevated pedestrian bridge, 1.28-miles long with a 212-ft. elevation above the Hudson River. This creates a very special photo op. @walkwayoverthehudson Dutchess County is rife with additional experiences, farm tours, outdoor activities, contemporary arts and craft beverages. Pick your pleasure and make Dutchess County your destination.
