Up Close: From the Editor

I admit it. I’m not much of a sports fan. I guess you could say I’m in the minority here. I can’t mentally get into rooting for a certain team until final championship games are played. Being from Missouri, I did find myself cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs when they competed at the Super Bowl for two years in a row. Then there was the Interstate 70 Series when the St. Louis Cardinals played against the Kansas City Royals in the 1985 World Series. (I’m admitting old age here, aren’t I.) At the time, the family owned a rental store and the walls were lined with various TVs. Sofas sat in the middle of the showroom. As the store was closed on Sunday, we invited friends over after church on Sunday night for popcorn and a watch party. Some were Royals fans while others liked the Cardinals. By the end of the evening, the sofas were facing the TVs and chosen sides were back-to-back against each other. It was quite loud at times. Sometimes one half of the store - then the other side. So when I started gathering article information for this month’s issue, I felt way out of my league. Some things I “thought” were sports activities were actually considered a hobby. So what is the difference between a sport and a hobby, anyway? I googled Wikipedia and the dictionary to distinguish the two. A sport is defined as a physical activity, generally involving some kind of physical skill and exertion. Competition between two or more individuals or two or more teams is involved. Whereas a hobby is defined as a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation. It’s something you do for fun, rather than a possible primary vocation. Anyone who has played any type of sport – whether it is an individual or a team sport – knows that the goal of sports is to win. Whether it is to win a game, match, race, etc., it doesn’t matter. Winning is how the players or participants (especially professionals) know and feel like they are successful and accomplished when they win. With these definitions, I claim this summer’s festivals as sports because we have competed against all the odds of COVID-19 and won. Festivals are returning to the calendar. Schedules are filling fast. So we win! Let’s Go to a Ball Game AND a couple festivals listed in this issue!

Cooking With a Purpose It’s time. Let’s go!

But first, please allow me to give you a word of advice: make your reservations early. It seems everyone is planning a trip this summer. And by everybody, I do mean every single one. As a result, hotels, resorts and campsites are filling up quickly. Yes I can honestly say, during the past few weeks, I have not spoken with anyone who is not planning a summer trip. For me, the summer begins with a response to the historical command stating, “Go west, young man!” My reasons for this trip are a bit different than theirs, but I am heading west nonetheless. I am going with a Disaster Relief Recovery Team to an area affected by the forest fire last fall. The details have not been finalized yet, but I do know I will be cooking for our team of volunteers. This creates a new problem for me. You see, we will be in a high altitude area which requires some adjustments to cooking methods, particularly baking. I’ve done my research and the availability of high altitude recipes is limited. However, I did find a few which I plan to try. If you live at sea level, this might not interest you, but it is good to know such things exist. PERFECT HIGH ALTITUDE BISCUITS 4 c. flour scant 2 tablespoons baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt 1 c. (2 sticks) cold, unsalted butter cut into pieces 1 & 1/2 c. buttermilk, cold Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add butter and use a pastry blender until crumbs are the size of peas, using care not to overmix. Pour in buttermilk. With a wooden spoon or hard spatula, incorporate just until mixed. Again, don’t overmix. Lightly flour a flat surface. Transfer dough onto flour. The dough will look like it is falling apart, but that is normal. Shape the dough and lightly roll it into a ball. Roll out to about 1/2”thick. Fold and roll again to about 3/4” thick. Fold again and roll to about 1” thick. Cut into biscuits. Tip: use a pizza

cutter to cut into squares in order to prevent overworking the scraps of dough created by cutting them in circles. Bake 1” apart on parchment-lined cookie sheet for 10-12 minutes or until done. Brush tops with melted butter if desired. Enjoy with gravy or jam. At this point, you may be thinking this is somewhat out of the norm for the type of recipe I generally discuss this time of year. You would be correct. However, rather than telling you about another picnic recipe, I figured you will be needing a hearty breakfast food to fuel your family for all the wonderful adventures which await your upcoming visit.

Tightwad Troubadours

For a great evening of live entertainment, this house band of country artists are featured on a weekly basis from April to November at the Truman Lake Opry in midcentral Missouri. Featured musicians are Jonathan Koch, lead singer who also plays rhythm guitar and piano. Terry Vick is the talented drummer and also sings. Andrew Beeman plays steel guitar and lead guitar while Mark Conly plays the bass guitar, harmonizing with their partners. Among all her other duties, founder and owner D.D. Snider is a regular star vocalist. You can even join in the fun on stage by singing Karaoke in The Torchwood Saloon, open every Friday night with no cover charge after the Opry Show is over. Also open every Saturday night for special music and Karaoke, there is a delicious food menu, opening at 5:50 p.m. It all started three years ago when DD drove by the vacant building located on State Highway 7. It was for sale and the vision and inspiration began. A lot of hard work and money was invested to remodel and refurbish the facility before placing it on the map as “hometo the Truman Lake Opry.” When asked why settling near Tightwad, Mo. instead of Branson where country music fans

swarm, DD answered, “I’ve already been there done that.” After spending several years in the entertainment world, she decided less competition and a high-traffic area would be a more attractive draw to customers. Periodic Wild West Dinner Shows are planned for August. For only $20 per person ($10 ages under 10), The menu includes your choice of chicken or pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, cheesy noodles, green beans, dinner roll, dessert and drink. Go, Do, See

4 Extreme Sports Extreme sports aren’t for everyone, at least the participation part. But if you’re into them, Alaska is definitely the place to be. After all, Alaska is extreme! Here are the top 5 extreme sports of The Last Frontier:

Heli-Skiing

I can’t wait to share these moments with you on this very special Christian cruise. We hope you’ll come along for a spectacular week in one of our favorite places on earth! Imagine soaring high into the Alaska’s endless snow-draped peaks, then being dropped off on one of them, maybe with a few of your best friends. Then you ski down a nearly vertical slope of fresh, untouched powder into the vast Alaskan backcountry. Several professional heli-skiing outfits operate over vast areas of the Chugach Mountains, including Valdez and the Girdwood areas. You can also find heli-skiing in Haines and Juneau.

Ice climbing

Ice climbing is the sport of climbing glaciers and other inclined ice formations. Unlike rock climbing, ice climbing involves more swinging and pounding (of ice picks) to get your stance. As you might imagine, Alaska is full of ice climbing areas. Some climbs are roped and protected icefalls, frozen waterfalls, and cliffs covered with ice refrozen from flows of water -12- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2021

Bore Tide Surfing . A bore tide is a wave of seawater that forms when the tide shifts as it returns to a shallow and narrowing inlet from a broad bay. It occurs after extreme minus low tides created by the full or new moon. There are more than 60 bore tides around the world, but only a few are known as extreme. Alaska has one of them in the Turnagain Arm on the Cook Inlet south of Anchorage. The best times for surfing the bore tide (or at least watching it) is near the spring and fall equinoxes in March and September, respectively. Caution: the biggest hazard to surfing a bore tide is getting stuck in the mud flats and drowning on the incoming tide. Mountain Climbing Alaska has all ten of the top ten tallest mountain peaks in the USA! Denali, of course, is the big one, towering at 20,310 feet. About 1,000 people per year attempt the summit Denali, with an average of 3 resulting in death (often from descent and/or falls). There’s still snow-kiting, snow-biking, skijoring, snow biking, dry-suit scuba diving, winter surfing and more.

Wai Kai

Ewa Beach — Everything people love about Hawaii will be at one new destination in West Oahu— with a major twist. Wai Kai, located within Hoakalei Resort in Ewa Beach, will capitalize on surfing’s growing popularity by coupling the world’s largest deep-water standing surf wave with dining, entertainment, and events focused on wellness, families, arts and culture, and celebrations for every season. “Wai Kai is destined to become a year-round active destination where residents and visitors will enjoy first-of-its-kind attractions, signature events and the natural beauty of the nearby Pacific Ocean,” said Larry Caster, director of retail development for Wai Kai Commercial Development, the company building Wai Kai. “Wai Kai will have interactive and engaging experiences all in one place, along with great food, that you won’t find anywhere else.” Wai Kai is part of Hoakalei Resort, where every day feels like a vacation with access to adjacent beaches and ancient shoreline trail, gracious residences and seven major golf courses nearby, including Hoakalei Country Club designed by Ernie Els, his first Hawaii signature golf course. One of the truly unique experiences at Wai Kai will be The LineUp, a dynamic social and

recreational hub of authentic waterman experiences headlined by the Wai Kai Wave, the world’s largest deep-water standing surf wave at 100-feet wide. Powered by citywave®, the technology creates authentic surfing conditions with perfect endless and adjustable waves from two-feet to head-high for all skill levels allowing the use of standard surfboards with fins for big carving turns and top-to-bottom surfing on its glassy wave face. The Wai Kai Wave was created in collaboration with Oahu’s-own Shane Beschen (a partner in The LineUp at Wai Kai’s operating company), X Games Gold Medalist and a former world #2 ranked surfer, and his young gun surfing son Noah. “The surfing will be similar to Oahu’s Waimea Bay river wave that flows periodically when the sand bar opens up after heavy

rainfall periods – but on steroids,” said Shane. “Everything from high speed carving turns to sections for attacking the lip or doing airs are all possible here. It creates the perfect on-demand setup.” The Wai Kai Wave overlooks the 52-acre Wai Kai Lagoon, which will offer a sheltered area for stand up paddling, kayaks, guided outrigger canoes, and piloted electric boat cruises. Major surf and waterman competitions are being planned for the Wai Kai Wave and Wai Kai Lagoon. Along a portion of the Lagoon waterfront will be restaurants and areas for pop-up retail, events and recreation to appeal to visitors and residents alike interested in wellness, arts and culture.

Built on a strong commitment to the fans, Chesney’s No Shoes Radio serves as a connector for the man The Los Angeles Times deemed “The People’s Superstar” and The Wall Street Journal hailed “The King of the Road.” “I love playing for No Shoes Nation any time, anywhere,” said Kenny Chesney, “but these stadium shows are always something so powerful, I can’t tell you how much anticipation goes into each one. Not to mention, we’re always wanting to top what’s come before – and I think this lineup might just pack the most fun of them all.” Recently singled out by Variety as “Country’s only long-term stadium act,” Chillaxification 2020 builds on the enduring rite of summer that Chesney’s stadium shows have become. With the multiple-week No. 1 “Get Along” from his deeply personal Songs for the Saints, benefiting -20- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2021

the Love for Love City Fund, and the steamy “Tip of My Tongue” hovering just outside the Top 10 at Country radio, there’s a lot of new music, old favorites, and surprises on tap for what will be the summer’s biggest tour.

Chillaxification 2020 promises to be everything No Shoes Nation has come to expect from the man who gave them “American Kids,” “Beer In Mexico,” “Out Last Night,” “Noise,” “When the Sun Goes Down” and more.

Having defined the country music stadium experience over the last decade and a half, Chesney spent this year’s Songs for the Saints Tour taking his music to the cities that have been overlooked on his massive million-tickets-a-summer treks. Having played 159 stadium shows – rocking over a million people at Gillette Stadium alone –

Tickets cost from $37.50-$165.50. Previously purchased tickets are valid for the new date. For more information including refund options, visit http://BrickBreeden.com.

vantage of the ideal sky gliding conditions? Similar to hang gliding, a glider ride means experiencing the thrill of being pulled into the air by a tow plane, before cutting loose and soaring in an engineless plane—with only the sound of the wind under your wings— over Emerald Bay, the mighty Sierra Nevada mountains, and beyond.

SKYDIVE LAKE TAHOE

From tip to sail, from leisurely hot air balloons and helicopter tours to heart-pounding air races and full-on land sailing all dialed and ready for your flight plan. Better yet, Nevada’s legendary bright blue skies make the perfect backdrop for any air sports adventures you’re looking to get into. Jump in the cockpit, tighten down that harness, and let’s fly. Skydiving Nevada is a definite frontrunner as one of the most thrilling, adventurous air sports under the sun and places like Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe couldn’t be better places to jump out of a plane and tick this one off the list. Get that adrenaline pumping at Skydive Las Vegas—where visitors can freefall at 120+ miles per hour over the only drop zone in the country with views of Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Las Vegas Strip, Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston and the Mighty Colorado. Or climb 12,000 feet above magnificent Lake Tahoe for unmatched views of Big Blue and out-of-this-world excitement while tandem skydiving with the pros. If skydiving isn’t quite your speed, check out other extreme air sports in Nevada

HANG GLIDING

Whether you’re after big excitement or a peaceful ride, we’ve got a big ol’ sky with your name on it. Piloted by true thrill seekers who usually fly light, non-motorized aircraft, jump from mountain ranges, gliding down and landing into valleys below, hang gliding is one of the closest things to feeling like flying. Since Nevada is the most mountainous state in the continental U.S., that means hang gliding air sports in this part of the country are unrivaled. Fly with the Desert Skywalkers—a local hang gliding and paragliding pilots club in Vegas, or book your air adventure with Sierra Adventures—a motorized hang gliding experience over Tahoe, and surrounding mountainscapes. Hang gliding is one way to get a dose of solid adventure, but did you know pilots from all over the world travel to Nevada’s Carson Valley to practice, get certified, and take ad-

PARASAILING

What better way to take in Lake Tahoe’s stunning clarity than from above? Slightly more controlled than some of the other thrill-seeking air sports in Nevada, visitors and locals can hover over one of the largest and clearest alpine lakes in the world by parasailing Lake Tahoe. Departing from north and south Lake Tahoe, experienced captains and crew float visitors up above crystal-clear blue waters by parasail.

Air Sports -

This dry and gentle takeoff and landing means this air sport is perfect for photographers, so be sure to have your camera ready. All parasailing in Nevada can be found at Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, and the Colorado River, where visitors can embark on single or tandem rides that vary in height from 400 to 1,200 feet above Big Blue. Back on (very) dry land, Nevada is the premier landsailing destination in the U.S., where “sailors” from all over the globe flock to our hard, flat, dry lake beds (playas) to race dirt boats that scream up to 90 miles per hour. America’s Land Sailing Cup, the Land Sailling World Championship, and other top landsailing events covet Nevada’s ideal combo of hard packed ground and wind. It’s basically the holy gale of wind sports.

A Most Perfect Village

COOPERSTOWN - The small village of Cooperstown, located in the foothills of New York’s Northern Catskill Mountains, is a total charmer. A walk down Main Street makes you feel like you’re taking a stroll back through time, and after a weekend visit, you’ll feel like a local ... and probably want to be one, too. You most likely identify Cooperstown as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum, but you’ll also find the legendary Otesaga Resort Hotel here, along with the Fenimore Art Museum and The Farmers’ Museum. But let’s get back to that Hall of Fame for a minute. A visit is guaranteed to stir up those nostalgic feelings. You’ll recall the first time you took a swing at a ball in your back yard, the first time your parents took you to a Major League game ... and maybe even the day your

mom accidentally threw away all your baseball cards when she cleaned out the attic. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is the place where memories and stories are preserved and through a full lineup of unique experience offerings, where new memories are created. “Take Me Out to the Ball Game is the third most played in American culture, behind “Happy Birthday” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Jack Norworth wrote the lyrics in 1908 and first sung by his then-wife, Nora Bayes, a popular vaudevillian. It’s since been sung by more than 500 recording artists and used in the movies and on television at least 1,200 times. Cooperstown’s National Baseball Hall of Fame is home to Norworth’s original lyrics, which he scrawled on an envelope.

Water Sports in Gulf

GULF COUNTY–There are bays and inland waters. There are places like the Stump Hole and the Dead Lakes. Places for fishing and places for floating. From any spot in the county, it’s never more than a five-minute trip to one of these waterways and the means to enjoy them are as varied as the landscape.

Located on the central Gulf coast, Gulf County is just two hours southwest of Tallahassee

-36- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ June, 2021

and an hour east of Panama City Beach. It has a laid-back beach town vibe and is known as a prime coastal getaway for those who prefer low-rise lodging, local eateries and home-grown businesses. The water-related activities here are diverse and, of course, visitors are encouraged to find their own way to enjoy them. Here are some tips for the best ways to experience some of Gulf County’s best spots. Eco-tours–The most unexpected experience in the county may be an outing on the Dead Lakes, located in the inland community of Wewahitchka. The freshwater

lakes are named for the thousands of hollow cypress stumps that remain after sand bars formed in the Chipola River. The stumps are joined by beautiful cypress and White Tupelo trees, along with a host of fish and wildlife. Shelling and snorkeling–Gulf County is well-known as a great shelling and snorkeling location and the calm, shallow waters here are the best around for these pursuits. Exploring near the Gulf shoreline for shells at low tide and discovering the wildlife while gently swimming amid the grass beds of St. Joseph Bay are invitations to learn more about the creatures that inhabit these waters.

DINING DESTINATIONS Of course, a day on the water can conjure up an appetite! These local favorites offer delicious dining options, and they don’t mind if you wear your beach attire. Weber’s Little Donut Shop (4975 Cape San Blas Road, Port Saint Joe, Fl. 32456; 850-340-3552) Many start the day ordering at the window of this little jewel, famous for cake donuts and deep-fried croissants. Tiki Grill (2531 FL-71, Wewahitchka, Fl. 32465; 850-639-6888) This popular lunch spot has limited seating but features daily specials as well as a grab-n-go deli counter. Shipwreck Raw Bar (7008 West Highway 98, Port Saint Joe, Fl. 32456; 850-647-5050) This spot serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The extensive menu features oysters, seafood and steaks.

Fishing–The variety of options, whether inshore, offshore or inland, makes this an angler’s dream location. To the north, there are Largemouth Bass and Crappie to be found in the Dead Lakes, Apalachicola River or Lake Wimico. St. Joseph Bay, Indian Pass Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway are popular spots for Speckled Trout, Redfish and more. A favorite surf fishing spot for locals is the Stump Hole on Cape San Blas. And of course, the Gulf of Mexico is easily accessible for offshore species like grouper, Amberjack and snapper. Paddling–The pristine waters

of St. Joseph Bay are a favorite among paddlers, who know dolphin and sea turtle sightings are bound to add to the excitement of a fun day on the water. But whether gliding on St. Joseph Bay, taking an outing from St. Joe Beach or exploring amid the wild beauty of the Dead Lakes, adventure abounds for paddlers. Taking in the sunset–There may be no more relaxing way to enjoy the waters than to watch one of Gulf County’s amazing sunsets. Charter cruises are available, but many choose to just enjoy the beauty with their toes in the sand at one of the many local beach access points.

Indian Pass Raw Bar (8391 County Road 30A, Port Saint Joe, Fl. 32456; 850-227-1670) Oysters are the star of this menu and they are served raw, baked and steamed. Steamed or stuffed shrimp and seafood gumbo are popular, too. Longbill’s (7650 Cape San Blas Road, Port Saint Joe, Fl.; 850-2504310) Pizza and tacos highlight the fare, along with the fresh seafood featured in the appetizers, sandwiches and entrees.

Start at the Crossroads CLARKSDALE - The crossroads, home of the Blues and heart of the Delta is ground zero, the real deal with stories of real people, past and present, living the Delta life. It offers the perfect foundation on which to build a Mississippi Delta road trip for an extended weekend. Seventy miles south of Memphis, Clarksdale sits where old U.S. Highways 61 and 49 intersect. From here, the flat Delta landscape and its wealth of unique experiences call out for visitors to explore. Downtown Clarksdale is the obvious place to start. The streets of Clarksdale are filled with a mixture of today’s opportunities and yesterday’s experiences. The mix of the two create a vibrant community with unique retail shops, locally-owned eateries, museums filled with regional art and culture and one-of-a-kind lodging options. And of course, there is music. A downtown walking tour offers a great way to explore. Clarksdale’s Audio Walking Tour is filled with stories and perspec-

tives of over a dozen locals and resident experts. Known for its place in music history, Clarksdale is keeping that music playing with live music venues like no other. There are more live performances here than anywhere else in the Delta. And here, the stories of the Blues are brought to life.. The Delta Blues Museum is internationally acclaimed as a showcase of the history and significance of the Blues in this region. It is filled with memorabilia, photographs, recordings and more, telling the stories of Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Charlie Musselwhite and other legends.

Clarksdale and Coahoma County were pivotal during the U.S. Civil Rights era, as well. Aaron Henry, a Clarksdale pharmacist, was an early grassroots activist in the Civil Rights movement. As local NAACP president, he led the early 1960s Clarksdale boycott campaign. At his side was Vera Pigee, who led the young African American members of the Youth Council to enter the white-only section of the Clarksdale bus station in protest. She was known for holding meetings, classes, literacy drives, voter registration and other Civil Rights gatherings in her beauty parlor. Clarksdale is home to one-ofa-kind lodging options that will add to any Delta experience. Boutique downtown hotels, historic motels and rural farm shacks are all options here.

Build a Sandcastle M

ore and more families discover this charming, Gulf-side village on the outskirts of Port Aransas. In fact, during March 2021, vacation rental guests booked 1,351 properties, an impressive 414% increase over March 2020. By the end of April, total year-over-year bookings at Cinnamon Shore for 2021 were already up 320%, pacing at three times the revenue of 2020. “Once people discover Cinnamon Shore, so many want to come back,” says Jeff Lamkin, developer. “We see it time and time again, as families make our community part of their beach traditions.” Testimonials from Cinnamon Shore photo contests show how eager guests are to return: Introducing New Urbanism to Texas beachgoers at its inception, Cinnamon Shore combines top-tier architecture, building technology, and interior design with a family-friendly vibe and resort amenities. New Urban living promises a return to a classic neighborhood layout, with walkable streets, front-porch charm and shared public spaces―where everything a resident could want is close at hand. On the coast, the No. 1 draw, is, of course, the beach, and Cinnamon Shore maintains a manicured beachfront that is accessible via graceful dune crossovers. All the other amenities, including three resort pools, on-site restaurants, a coffee shop, market, fitness center and dog park, are also within an easy stroll. Families socialize on the Town Center green,

where a concert series jazzes up weekends and outdoor movie nights delight the kids. On the Great Lawn, kids play games and make s’mores around a fire pit. With scenic vistas at every turn, the community attracts families looking for an upscale beach destination with character and style—a place that understands the heart of beach lovers. This original community―now known as Cinnamon Shore North―has fulfilled its original promise of a traditional seaside village. Now, the Cinnamon Shore lifestyle extends to a quickly rising expansion called Cinnamon Shore South, just about 1.5 miles away. “There’s such a demand for the type of beachfront community we’re creating,” Lamkin says. “And we’re gearing up to offer a full slate of events for summer’s high season.” Until Labor Day, a weekly roster of events provides countless options for family-friendly fun, including: • Sandcastle Building Lessons • Trivia Night at Dylan’s Coal Oven Pizzeria • S’mores on the Great Lawn • Yoga on the Beach • Swim Fitness • Surf Lessons • Paint & Sip (arts night) • Pilates • Paddle Board Yoga • DJ at Kiera’s Pool For more, see cinnamonshore. com.

Field of Dreams This baseball field and pop-culture tourist attraction was originally built for the movie of the same name. It is in Dubuque County, near Dyersville. Universal Pictures built the baseball diamond on two farms, a few miles outside Dyersville for the 1989 film Field of Dreams. When production completed, the baseball diamond created for the movie was left behind. Most of the baseball field, including the diamond and the adjacent house, was on a farm owned by the Lansing family, but the left and center field were on an adjacent property owned by the Ameskamp family. The field was built across the two properties because the producers wanted to place the field in a location where sunset shots would have a clear line-of-sight. After filming completed, the Lansing family kept their portion of the field intact, and sold souvenirs. The Ameskamp family returned their land to farming for a year, but then restored the remainder of the field and opened up their own souvenir stand. The two owners had operated separate tourist facilities, at odds regarding commercialization of the site. In 1990, Keith Rahe, a neighboring farmer, put together a baseball team dubbed the “Ghost Players” to entertain the visitors at the field. The team’s presence at the field on Sunday afternoons once a month attracted thousands of additional fans to the field. In 1991 and 1992, the Upper Deck Company sponsored a celebrity game at the field. Hall of Famers like Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson and Bob Feller competed against Hollywood stars like Kelsey Grammer and Meat Loaf in a charity game. The two games raised over $100,000 for charities. Step back in time and place while touring the inside the Field of Dreams farm house. During this live, guided 30-minute tour, you will hear stories about the home

from its early days as the Lansing family homestead in the early 20th century to its rebirth as the set for the Kinsella family in the 1989 fantasy classic. Fans can spend the night in the newly remodeled three-bedroom farm house and enjoy the “Kinsella Experience.” Guests will be greeted personally by the Movie Site staff and will receive a complimentary gift basket. The house is available for rent year round and can accommodate groups of up to seven. Construction began on a Major League Baseball regulation field and stadium in 2019 with a maximum capacity of 8,000 to host the first-ever regular-season Major League Baseball game in Iowa originally set to feature the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the MLB at Field of Dreams was postponed to 2021, with an official date of Thursday, August 12. It has been confirmed that the original matchup for the game will be honored between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. The White Sox will be the home in the matchup because of their role in the 1989 Field of Dreams movie, in which the ghosts of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and other members of the 1919 Black Sox play on the diamond in the Iowa cornfield. a solid point. Some seasons Kansas has the largest bobwhite harvest in the nation! Pheasant hunting is legendary and almost always some of the best in America. In some fields you may have a cluster-flush of a dozen roosters rising at once in a mass of colors and cackles. Waterfowl hunting can be spectacular with flocks of mallards or geese numbering in the hundreds or thousands. The sight of a world-class whitetail with antler tines like a candelabra, haq sent many veteran hunters into a serious case of buck fever. There’s no a shortage of places or ways to pursue any of the above. Kansas’ one-million-plus acre Walk-in Hunting Access Program, one of the best in the nation, leases private lands for hunters to enjoy for free. There are another 500,000 or so acres of public hunting scattered across the state. That includes much of Cheyenne Bottoms, America’s largest natural wetland, and parts of four national wildlife refuges. Small game or big, on your own or guided, Kansas is the place to be. Memories are just waiting to be made.

Humble Hometown Hero

The Roger Maris Museum is a 70-foot (21m) display case museum in West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo, North Dakota. It is dedicated as a permanent shrine to Major League Baseball player and local alumni Roger Maris, centering on his life and baseball career, most notably for the New York Yankees during the 1961 season in which Maris hit a then-record 61 home runs. The museum is open during mall hours and is free to the public. When approached with the idea of creating a museum in his honor, Roger Eugene Maris (September 10, 1934 – December 14, 1985) – who hit a Major League Baseball record 61 home runs during the 1961 season for the New York Yankees, breaking Babe Ruth’s single-season record of 60 home runs in 1927 – declined. An incredibly humble man, he eventually relented but requested that the museum be “put where people will see it.” He also requested that the museum be open to the public free of charge.

The Roger Maris Museum opened in Fargo, North Dakota – Roger’s hometown – in 1984, and true to Roger’s wishes, it is visible, accessible, and free. Located in the Roger Maris Wing near the Aquarium Court at West Acres Shopping Center, the glass-en-

closed museum enables visitors to re-live Roger’s legendary life. More than 7,000,000 people visit West Acres every year, and while museum officials don’t track museum attendees, there is almost always someone viewing the memorabilia. The museum, which was originally created by Bob Smith, Jim McLaughlin and American Legion Post No. 2, was fully renovated by West Acres in 2003. Notable museum features include: A video room for watching historic footage while sitting on actual Yankee Stadium seats from the Maris era. A replica of Roger’s Yankee Stadium monument. A replica of Roger’s 1961 locker. Displays and artifacts from Roger’s youth and Major League playing days. Mall hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Lilyfest

Gardeners of all levels can learn something at Lilyfest. Reserve time to celebrate 30 years of outdoor education

ROCKBRIDGE – It’s been three decades since Bobbi Bishop and her late husband Bruce started an art festival on their property with the intent of giving local artists an outlet to sell their work. In the time that has eclipsed since 1992, Lilyfest has grown along with generations of musicians, artists, master gardeners, naturalists, and horticulturalists. Book release and signings have been held there, garden artwork purchased at Lilyfest dots the gardens of landscaped homes throughout the Midwest, and thousands of tourists fill cabins and hotels to the brim every July. Billed as the premier art and garden destination within the Hocking Hills region, the 30th anniversary celebration is extra special this year because last year’s event was disrupted by the pandemic. COVID-19 shifted the festival to become virtual in 2020,

which made it accessible to everyone. Yet the grounds were much quieter, explained Bishop. “We missed everyone so much last year, and we want everyone to come back so we can see them,” she said, noting there are regulars and new faces she appreciates seeing each year. “Please come back. We missed you so much,” she continued with a jovial laugh. It’s the kind of laugh and sense of humor that has helped create a sense of community among newbie gardeners and green thumbs alike. New gardeners can volunteer at Lilyfest’s home, Bishop Educational Gardens, to learn tips and tricks from those with more experience, including Bishop herself. “If you want blue hydrangeas, add an acidic to the soil,” she explained while walking along a row of them in a flower bed near the main stage. “If you want red ones, add lime.” Its tips and tricks like these that make Lilyfest so special. If there’s a problem area in someone’s yard where trees won’t grow, there’s

a reason and someone at Lilyfest probably knows the answer. It’s also possible they’ll take your name and number and call you with the answer if they don’t immediately know. According to Bishop, the most important tip and trick for newbie gardeners should be not to go big to start with. “Don’t overwhelm yourself. It should be fun and relaxing to care for a garden, and not a struggle,” she said. Reservations must be made in advance at Lilyfest’s website this year, www.lilyfest.com in an effort to stay at a reduced capacity because of health concerns related to COVID-19. All health guidelines will be followed and organizers are working closely with the Hocking County Health Department and monitoring new guidelines as they emerge. “We’re working hard to create a safe and fun atmosphere for everyone,” Bishop said The online reservation system is now available.
