Up Close: From the Editor

When a “Luxurious Weekend Getaway” is suggested, what flashes through your mind? Is it the destination first or the experience? Many have responded to this question with being pampered to their hearts content. But again, I ask, “what flashes through your mind on HOW do you wish to be treated? When I first chose the editorial topic for this month, “All inclusive Resorts You’ll LOVE,” I was personally thinking of safe destinations for travelers to visit and have lodging, dining, shopping, and adventure or special activity all in one convenient place. After so many months of staying at home due to the pandemic, it only seemed fitting to help promote the resorts that have reopened and are ready to safely welcome the return of their guests. It’s been a tough year for all of us. To help find the right icon for our first-time Valentine’s Scavenger Hunt, I asked all my staff members what their idea of a luxurious getaway meant to them. Little did I realize there would be as many “different” opinions as there are recipes for apple pie. A warmer climate, the beach, and new destination never visited before were the top answers. Go anywhere without a bloomin’ mask, escape from work, and a romantic evening were also mentioned. After studying all my answers, I realized it was the cherished memories of the experience that we have in common. A desire to escape reality for just a little while and refresh your mind and renew lost energy is important to all of us. So take a peak at our suggestions throughout this issue and look for those scavenger hunt clues listed on P. 2 to try your luck at winning your next extended weekend getaway! Soak in a heart-shaped hot tub, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, toast one another at a romantic restaurant or snuggle by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate. Whatever the adventure, have a

Romantic Road Trips Recommended by the American Coach® Brand

This February, consider hitting the open road with your Valentine to explore the country’s unique and romantic road stops. For luxury RV enthusiasts and those who love travel, this time of year is ideal for exploring the warmer climates of the U.S. and savoring time with your significant others. The following 10 destinations have been selected due to their scenic drives, sensual allure, and idyllic scenery. American Coach is an ultra-luxury brand of recreational vehicles that’s celebrating its 30th anniversary. American Coach motorhomes are known for their exquisite design, lavish touches, and innovative engineering that make a road trip a relaxing and indulgent experience. New models feature such amenities as highend kitchens with black stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops with waterfall edges and hand-crafted kitchen cabinets; spacious and luxurious master bedrooms and baths with articulating mattresses, spa showers and his and her sinks; and superior technology components such as 50” exterior TVs. American Coach is part of the REV Recreation Group (RRG), a subsidiary of REV Group, Inc. American Coach models have earned numerous industry awards, including “Top RV De-

but” and “Must See RV.” For more information, visit americancoach.com. Each ‘Romantic Stop’ has been researched but, due to COVID-19, be sure to call ahead to confirm hours of operation for parks, restaurants and other attractions and activities. (1) St. Augustine, FL Located on Florida’s Historic Coast, St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565 and is known as the oldest city in the U.S. St. Augustine became a vacation destination after several luxury resorts were built at the direction of Henry Flagler, a founder of Standard Oil, who wanted to create a new American

Riviera. The city’s Historic District is steeped with Gilded Age romance -- cobblestone streets, centuries-old Spanish-influenced buildings, hidden courtyards, ornate fountains, and grand monuments. Explore the grounds of Flagler College, a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, and stop for a couples’ picture in front of the fountain at the main entrance. The college was originally the Hotel Ponce de León, a decadent hotel commissioned by Flagler. Next to the college, visit the Lightner Museum, an architectural masterpiece built in 1888 as the Alcazar Hotel. Romantic elements of the museum

By Sheeree Oney Places to Go Editor include exquisite Victorian art glass, stained glass works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Oriental art. A couples’ carriage ride through the streets or a self-guided tour of the town’s collection of magnificent churches simply adds to the European allure of St. Augustine. RVers can spend the night at Compass RV Resort that offers full hookup, patio, and buddy sites. There’s also a spacious dog park, swimming pool, fitness center, and nature trail. (2) Amelia Island, FL A 90-minute drive south of St. Augustine is laid-back Amelia Island with its 13 miles of rolling dunes and pristine seashore. Its picturesque beaches are a perfect backdrop for togetherness. Start the day with a sunrise horseback ride on the white sand beach that ribbons the Atlantic Ocean (assistance is provided to make the ride accessible to all ages). Afterwards, walk arm-inarm and discover seashell treasures like great heart cockles, sand dollars, and olives. For couples’ pampering, visit the Omni Resort. Try a Swedish massage or cleansing facial. Make a reservation at Salt at the Ritz-Carlton, one of the only five-diamond restaurants in Florida, and consider booking the chef’s table in the kitchen. At the end of the day, take a sunset cruise to catch the spectacular oranges, pinks, and reds as the sun dips behind the horizon. (3) Savannah, GA With its 22 historic squares, Italianate mansions, cobblestone alleyways, and stately oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, Savannah is a romantic must. Pack a picnic lunch or order one from

a local shop and spend a leisurely afternoon in Forsyth Park. Be sure to take a picture in front of the park’s grand, ninth-century castiron fountain, which was modeled after the fountains at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Holding hands while taking a carriage ride or joining a historic walking tour are two more ways to soak up the charm of this beautiful Southern gem. Just 20 minutes from Savannah is quaint Tybee Island with five miles of beautiful beaches. Climb the state’s tallest and oldest lighthouse (built in 1736) for seemingly never-ending views of the Atlantic Ocean. Take a guided kayak tour of the salt marshes, lounge on the beach, watch for dolphins as they frolic in the waves, go bird watching at North Beach as seabirds and shorebirds migrate from the Arctic, and then enjoy a seafood dinner at a cozy waterside restaurant. RVers can spend the night at CreekFire RV Resort that’s just 20 minutes west of Savannah. (4) Gadsden, AL Start a romantic exploration of Northern Alabama in Gadsden. Visit Noccalula Falls Park and take in Noccalula Falls as water cascades 90 feet into Black Creek ravine. To experience the falls from a different perspective, follow the Gorge Trail under-

neath the waterfall for a kiss and incredible pics. Just a few steps from the falls are a quaint wedding chapel and access to The Black Creek Trail - a peaceful, scenic walk where couples can enjoy the beauty of nature. Next, take a breathtaking drive along the North Alabama Wine Trail to discover a handful of local wineries nestled in the Appalachian Mountains and its lush valleys. Every Saturday in February, participating wineries are offering wine and chocolate pairings. Other stops along the way include Cathedral Caverns State Park with its immense stalagmites, “frozen” waterfall, and stalagmite forest. The cave is a cool 60 degrees yearround, making it an ideal place to snuggle close to each other. For more couples’ activities, visit Lake Guntersville Resort State Park located along the banks of the Tennessee River. The park features an 18-hole championship golf course plus excellent fishing in Alabama’s largest lake. After a round of golf or fishing, RVers can spend the night at Guntersville State Park.

Column Feature-Things to Do:

Cooking With a Purpose “Let’s have a Party!” I said. “Okay, let’s do,” answered a colleague. “What are we celebrating?” asked another coworker. Silence. Blank stares. More silence. Then . . .crickets.

We laughed it off and resumed working, but I continued to think about it until wandering thoughts drifted to my happy place: a location where face masks are not required. “AHA! I’ve got it!” I cried. “A bonfire!” I received some pretty strange looks until I clarified, “We can celebrate our freedom from masks - by burning the masks.” Once the requirement is lifted, one person is still going to keep theirs for use during cold weather. One lady said she has thought about painting a mouth on hers so she won’t need to

buy lipstick ever again. Another plans to hang his on a tree and use it for target practice (he didn’t specify what caliber.) It’s not hard to figure out which method I prefer. However, I still like my original idea better. If sales are good for raffle tickets to see who gets to light the ceremonial flame, I could make a fortune.

SONOMA– Here’s a new twist on an old game -- Treasure Hunt. The hunt happens this winter in the West where starry skies, wide open spaces and fresh air prevail. The treasures are ranches that open their doors to visitors. Some ranches are in shirtsleeve climes; others regale guests with blankets of snow. “In lieu of traveling outside the country for a winter vacation this year, guests who embrace the relaxing routine of life on a ranch may well wonder why they waited so long to discover the joys of ranch vacations,” says Gene Kilgore. He is the world’s leading authority on vacations ranging from cattle wrangling to fly fishing to spa. The common denominator in all of Kilgore’s recommendations is one word – ranch. Following are his recommendations for sourcing winter treasures. His ranch-driven websites also thoughtfully assist travelers by offering free concierge services. With 600 miles of groomed trails and 2 million acres of untrammeled backcountry terrain, the lodge is a favorite with “sled heads,” including being a called a “dynamo destination” on the sledding “bucket list” by American Snowmobiler and “a cut above” by SnoWest. This year the lodge boasts -30- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ February, 2021

10 new snow machines, and the always sought-after company of Brooks Lake’s resident snowmobile experts including famed pro rider Skinner Bell. But with all the technical riding potential for skilled sled jockeys, the experience is totally tailored to guest abilities, ensuring memorable fun in the snow for novices and families as well. While snowmobiling is often a guest favorite, the lodge offers a variety of cold-weather activities, including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing with the necessary equipment supplied and guides available. Guests also can enjoy a Rocky Mountain Safari through the surrounding countryside with a guide explaining the unique Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem habitat and pointing out such local wildlife as moose and bighorn sheep. And because relaxation is just as important as adventuring, the lodge has guests covered with the on-site Rocky Mountain Spa offering a variety of massages, facials and scrubs. For just kicking back, the spa’s enormous 11-by-17-foot hot tub overlook-

ing the Pinnacle Mountains is the perfect spot for an après-snow-day soak. All this activity works up an appetite, but getting a good meal is never a concern at Brooks Lake Lodge, where the talented culinary team offers guests three thoughtfully prepared Western gourmet meals each day, all included in an overnight stay. Called “the best meal in the middle of nowhere” by Food and Beverage Magazine, and hailed by the Travel Channel, the LA Times and Big Sky Journal, the dining scene at the lodge is well fit for the inner foodie. We’re talking entrees such as Tenderloin of Beef Roulade stuffed with fresh spinach, red bell peppers and toasted pine nuts; Cajun Diver Scallops; and Ganache-covered Golden Vanilla Cake with Fresh Berry Compote for dessert. Yep, no one leaves the Great Hall hungry or unsatisfied. And the Great Hall will be open to the public for a limited number of reservation-only daytime lunch guests during the winter season as well, for snowmobilers, skiers or snowshoers enjoying the wintry backcountry. As for accommodations, guests at the lodge can kick back in their private cabin or in the lodge’s Sheep Suite, each space equipped with a wood burning stove, comfy lodgepole pine beds and

views of the remarkable surroundings. Brooks Lake Lodge will accommodate a maximum of 18 overnight guests at a time this winter, as the safety of staff and guests is the lodge’s number one priority. Overnight winter rates at Brooks Lake Lodge start at $450 per person per night and include all meals and all activities and guides (with the exception of separate fees associated with snowmobile rentals). The lodge opens on December 20, 2020, and remains open for the winter season through March 15, 2021. Yawgoo Valley, R.I.

Like the Nashoba Valley Ski Area, Yawgoo Valley offers winter fun for houses divided on the skiing front. Skiers can devour 36 acres of the only skiable terrain in Rhode Island while the non-skiers in the family sail down the snow tubing runs. Spend long mornings on separate slopes but come together for a shared lunch at the Max Restaurant. Plus, since Yawgoo Valley is located a mere 20 minutes from Newport and Warwick, non-skiers have any easy escape from the mountain. Admittedly, there’s plenty to love about the Champlain Valley in any season, so it comes as no surprise that our Facebook fans would advocate its non-ski related charms. One fan in particular raved about Burlington, Vt.: “Winter is my favorite time to just wander along Church Street, and I think the icy lake and snowy Adirondacks make for some of the best views of the year at the waterfront.” It’s true that whether you’re shopping in Burlington, snowshoeing across farmland, or exploring the vast number of towns that make up the Champlain Valley, you’ll always have a beautiful, snowy backdrop to enjoy. Head south and explore the charming town of Vergennes, and grab a cappuccino at the Vergennes Laundry before hiking at Button Bay State Park. Far and away, the most popular winter destination for non skiers was the White Mountains of New Hampshire. While skiing may be their claim to fame, these sublime peaks host a universe of surprises for non skiers to explore. In fact, our fans couldn’t help but rave about the diversity of options, touting everything from snowmobiling to ice skating to shopping. You can even join up with the International Ice Climbing School to ascend Mount Washington. Once you’ve conquered the mountains, descend to nearby Lincoln, N.H. to marvel at the famous Lincoln Ice Castles. If you crave the hustle and bustle of a ski town, make North Conway your home base for your outdoor excursions so you can spend your evenings in this hamlet’s hopping downtown. Whether you want to summit a mountain or just explore a nearby town, there’s no shortage of winter destinations in New England for non-skiers. Don’t see your favorite spot on the list? Martin Brudnizki is in charge of interior design while art advisor Elizabeth Marguiles is tasked with sourcing contemporary works of art, while views of the Empire State Building and proximity to the city’s best shopping will certainly make it a prime destination for luxury seekers in the city. Fifth Avenue Hotel is expected to open in spring 2021 with rates starting at $495 per night.

Developer Flaneur Hospitality recently revealed renderings and a new name for 250 Fifth Avenue. Now known as “The Fifth Avenue Hotel,” the NoMad project is being designed by Perkins Eastman, PBDW Architects, and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and involves the restoration of a 115-year-old former bank designed by McKim, Mead & White, and the construction of an adjacent 230-foottall, 24-story ground-up building. Photos of the site show the new, reinforced concrete superstructure topped out and beginning to be enclosed with metal stud frames and walls.

PERRYSBUGH - There are actually two locations where Belamere Suites are featured: Cumming, Georgia and Perrysburg, Ohio. We chose the one closest to home for a getaway weekend. The website features the experience as “A Romantic Oasis with Private heated Pools. For my luxury taste, however, it was early check in and late check out to hide in our clean, comfortable room in privacy where we didn’t have to get up early. The expansive, meticulously detailed rooms have vaulted ceilings, warm inviting fireplaces, large whirlpool tubs, and two-person walkin showers complete with body massaging jets. There were lush robes and ample pillows for comfort. The exceptional part about the pools is there are pool suites allowing us to have our own private, 92 degree pool all to ourselves. Very romantic spot indeed! Belamere Suites Hotel was recognized as the overall winner in the Romance category in 2019 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice® awards for Hotels, ranking #1 in America. Lake Geneva, WI – Ski season is here and one of the Midwest’s favorite mountain tops is ready with safety guidelines and new protocols in place to enhance guests’ safety and experience.

The Mountain Top at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is open and welcomes your visit. With most individuals working remotely and children participating in virtual learning experiences, now is a good time to learn how to ski or snowboard or take that family winter trip that’s always on hold due to busy schedules. Both already naturally social-distanced sports and recreational activities, ski and snowboarding, offers guests a great opportunity to get outdoors in wide open spaces and enjoy movement or learn something new in the fresh winter air. The Mountain Top at Grand Geneva has also aligned itself with the National Ski Areas Association’s “Ski Well, Be Well” campaign. Developed by an advisory group of ski industry leaders, this new campaign promotes the benefits of outdoor winter sports while providing suggested safety guidelines and best practices for low risk recreation to ensure another successful season. The Mountain Top, a “no-judgement ski and snowboarding zone” located in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, offers over 30 acres with 21 runs, a six-acre terrain park with dedicated lift, 211’ vertical, plus trails and experiences for beginners and those who never had the time to enjoy a ski trip. The award-winning year-round resort also offers a terrain park, trolley transportation to the Mountain Top from resort locations, ski and snowboarding lessons, three chairlifts, two carpet lifts, excellent group rates, food and drinks at Leinenkugel’s Mountain Top Lodge, and night skiing. The Mountain Top also offers the Burton Riglet Park, built with young -76- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ February, 2021

As the resort continues its CleanCare Pledge and best practices, social distancing requirements must be observed at all times at The Mountain Top, unless skiers reside in the same living unit. Masks or face coverings are also required outdoors at the ski hill whenever physical distancing cannot be achieved. Guests are also encouraged to get ready in their car upon arrival and indoor access is reserved for those utilizing rental equipment, using the restrooms and dining in our restaurants. 3 Presidents MOUNT VERNON

Just a short drive from Washington, D.C., is Mount Vernon -- an American landmark and the historic home of America’s first president, George Washington, and his wife, Martha. The Washingtons lived in a two-story Georgian mansion overlooking the Potomac River on an estate that was originally 8,000 acres. Step back into history and tour the Washingtons’ plantation home, a blacksmith shop, stable, smokehouse, slave quarters and other outbuildings that supported daily life. An extensive museum shares background on Washington’s life prior to becoming president and the legacy he left behind. The site also includes a memorial to the hundreds of enslaved men, women, and children who worked the plantation. A unique way to visit Mount Vernon is by boat. Families can travel down the Potomac River and see the Washington Monument, United States Capitol, and other historic sites from a completely different vantage point. The boat trip is narrated and takes approximately three hours round trip. Families disembark at Mount Vernon and have four hours to explore the estate. Mount Vernon can also be reached by bike via the scenic Mount Vernon Trail. The ride takes approximately one hour, and bikes can be rented in Alexandria.

MONTICELLO, CHARLOTTESVILLE

Thomas Jefferson’s accomplishments before, during, and after his time as president are nearly unparalleled. He was the author of the Declaration of Independence, founder of the University of Virginia and architect of the Virginia State Capitol building. As the third president of the United States, he doubled the size of the country with the Louisiana Purchase and established the United States Military Academy at West Point. The 5,000-acre Monticello plantation is an amazing piece of history from the country’s early days. Built atop a moun-

tain, it was home to both the Jefferson family and an extended community of workers that included up to 130 enslaved individuals. Jefferson was a student of the world with a keen interest in architecture and botany and his estate reflects that. He spent 40 years from 1769-1809 designing, redesigning, building, and rebuilding his home. Monticello has 43 rooms, 13 skylights and eight fireplaces and is completely furnished. In fact, 60% of the pieces on display are original to the home. Due to his interest in botany, the estate has extensive flower, vegetable, and fruit gardens. In addition, Jefferson’s tomb and the African American Burial Ground are both located at Monticello. Jefferson died on July 4, 1826 -- 50 years after signing the Declaration of Independence and on the same day as John Adams, another American revolutionary and the second president of the United States who served from 1797-1801. Before visiting Monticello, dig deeper into Jefferson’s life by listening to a podcast found on the Monticello website. RVers can spend the night at Misty Mountain Camp Resort, located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and near historic Charlottesville, VA.

MONTPELIER, ORANGE

Close to Mount Vernon and Monticello, visit the plantation mansion and grounds of James Madison, the country’s fourth president who is also known as the Father of the Constitution. Visitors can explore the lives of James and Dolley Madison through guided tours that take place indoors and out. Montpelier also includes a groundbreaking exhibition on slavery that explores how the legacy of slavery impacts today’s conversations about race, identity, and human rights.
