ABOUT THE COVER: Let’s celebrate our nation’s FREEDOM all year long - not just on July 4th.

24 THINGS TO DO: Visit the old Swimming Hold

PEOPLE TO SEE: Toby Keith

Up Close: From the Editor Where will you be when the light goes out? The sun light, that is. On Aug. 21st, for the first time in 99 years, a complete full total eclipse will occur across the United States. The dark part of the Moon’s shadow first touches land in Oregon, crosses 13 more states, and ends in South Carolina before heading into the Atlantic Ocean. (See the map). Keep in mind, if you do not live in the yellow marked path, you will not be in the path of totality and you simply MUST choose to travel to a destination included so you can witness one of the most spectacular sights you will ever see in your lifetime. The task is difficult, because it is natural to believe that if you happen to be close to the path, youwill be able to see something that is “pretty good”. But just like the person who can smell the meal

outside of the steakhouse and not enter remains hungry, so do those who observe the eclipse from outside the path of totality. Then at the end of the day they are wondering what, indeed, all the fuss was about. Partial eclipses are nice to view, like a shooting star or finding the big dipper on a clear night. Remembering to use the proper eye protection, one can see the moon moving slowly across the face of the sun. But there is no climax, no culmination of the event, no exhilarating moment of true beauty in the sky above them. The event is not memorable, not life-changing, not anything to inspire one to join the ranks of “WOW”! I want to be wowed!

So I will be traveling to South Carolina. There are so many choices and we have highlighted a western, eastern and central location in this issue. (See page 28). So again, where will you be? We want to hear about your travel plans. Email to the editor@weekenderextended. com and automatically be entered in our next FREE weekend getaway sweepstakes for the whole family. But hurry. The deadline to enter is July 28!

ild Rice Festival

J

Deer River, MN

uly 7-9 For more than 65 years the Deer River area has celebrated the World’s Largest Wild Rice Festival. Originally, the festival was established to bring the community together to celebrate the abundance of one of the area’s natural staples, wild rice. Though wild rice still grows abundantly in some of the area lakes and rivers, the advent of “paddy rice” which is grown commercially and harvested mechanically, has made the once regional product a national available commodity. Like the rice itself, the Wild Rice Festival has evolved as well. Today’s wild rice festivals sponsored by the Deer River Lions Club feature a full schedule of activities designed to bring the whole Deer River Area Community together for a weekend of fun, food, entertainment, and fellowship. Whether you are young or old, there is always something to see and do at the festival. http:// www.wildricefestival.com/

Food Fun

I

I am a writer. Therefore, I write: whole books! No, better make that chapters. Um, pages and pages. Well, sometimes a paragraph or two. Let’s say, a sentence at a time. Sometimes I just scribble down notes with snippets of ideas. And on occasion, it is nothing more than thoughts to be organized and used later. I have lots of these.

Writer’s block is very real: those days when the words just won’t come. Years ago, I read about an idea used by a writer who was ‘stuck.’ Their character ran into a building and up the stairs to . . . to what? Instead, the author made a change by writing the character running down the stairs, out the exit and into the great outdoors. That was all it took to get those creative juices flowing which provided an abundance of possible scenarios for the end of the story. It worked for that author, but as I have mentioned before, I am an indoor person. When I get stumped, going outside isn’t the answer. And yet, here we are: smack dab in the middle of summer where there is always a plethora of activities specifically designed to get you outside. The possibilities are endless. Let’s start with sports, both for participants and spectators. Then there are concerts, fairs and festivals everywhere. For shoppers, flea markets and rummage sales abound. One big difference about this year is the eclipse on August 21. When it comes to a ‘once in a lifetime event’ this is it! So what can I write about that goes along with that? How about the Milky Way, the galaxy in which we live? Or, at least, my version of it. This is a recipe handed down from my husband’s grandmother. I took the liberty of updating it a bit. The original recipe says -14- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ July 2017

to use the 10 cent size candy bars. As much as it pains me to admit it, I am old enough to remember when candy bars were that price. For those of you who don’t, it is just the regular size. The instructions say to use a double boiler, but keep in mind, this was before there was a microwave in every home. I questioned the oven temperature and the length of baking time. I don’t know why it is so different from other recipes, but it is correct and it produces a good cake. MILKY-WAY CAKE 6 Milky-Way bars (regular size) 2 sticks margarine 2 cups sugar 1 cup buttermilk 4 eggs 2 1/2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped nuts (optional) Melt together 1 stick margarine and candy bars. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, cream sugar and other stick of melted margarine together. Add vanilla and cooled candy mixture. Add eggs 1 at a time, mixing well after each. Sift flour and baking soda together. Add alternately with buttermilk. Fold in nuts. Spray a tube pan or 2 loaf pans. Bake at 275 degrees for 2 hours or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. No icing is necessary, but a light glaze or chocolate drizzle is optional. One of the things I like about this cake is that it is great without icing which makes it easy to transport and eat anytime, anywhere . . . even during an eclipse.

Summer Fun is Synonymous with Swimming - Western River Expeditions Offers Its Top Picks for Swimming Holes, Pools and Hot Springs on Rivers in the West SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Getting wet under the hot summer sun and thoroughly enjoying it is an experience that participants of a whitewater rafting trip anticipate with youthful exuberance. It might be a giant wave from a rapid, a friendly water fight between rafts or a swim in a side stream or river eddy. The aim is to get drenched. However, knowing where to soak in a fun and safe environment is important. Western River Expeditions, providing Grand Canyon rafting, Utah and Idaho rafting, and international multi-sport trips, was founded in 1961 by Colorado River rafting pioneer Jack Currey. It has been named one of the “Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth” by the editors of National Geographic Adventure magazine. River and Canyon Swimming Safety Tips from the Experts • Always wear your lifejacket or PFD (personal flotation device). A PFD is required while swimming with a guide’s permission off the bank or in the main river channel. Ask your guides whether it should be worn off-river while swimming in side canyon creeks and hot springs. It should be fastened and adjusted to a snug fit. It must always be worn while in the raft. Wearing a pair of floatable footwear (Teva sandals for example) is also a good idea when swimming. • Swim only when and where your guides instruct. • Always be sure to let your guides or another adult know where you are, especially when you plan to enter the water. • Never jump into the river or pool unless your guide says it’s ok to do so. Always jump feet first. • Watch for signs of chill or the onset of hyperthermia. The water in the river can be cold, especially on early season trips or on rivers that are dam controlled. • Never swim alone! Use the Buddy System. • Try not to swallow the water. It may look clear and clean but you never know what has gotten into it upstream. • Get out before you are tired. Exhaustion comes on quick and can lead to slips and accidents. • Protect yourself from the sun. Exposure can be intense. Be sure to wear a waterproof, broad spectrum SPF 40+ applied at minimum 30 minutes before entering the water. Be sure to reapply immediately after you dry off. • Know where the kids are at all times! Kids love water but they can easily get in over their head. Watch the To ST JOSEPH - Mark your calendars for Aug. 21, 2017! You don’t want to miss this celestial event! On that day the United States will see its first total solar eclipse since 1979. The last time Northwest Missouri saw a total solar eclipse was in 1806, the same year Lewis and Clark returned from their expedition. The next opportunity to see totality will be in 2672. For two minutes and 39 seconds, the sun directly over St. Joseph will be completely covered by the moon. It will be the longest and fullest eclipse anywhere in the nation. Michael Bakich, senior editor of Astronomy Magazine, already knows where he will be on Aug. 21, 2017 — at Rosecrans Memorial Airport. “When I saw long ago — more than a decade ago

— that a total solar eclipse would sweep across the United States, I started looking at where I would like to be to observe this,” he said. “I saw it was going directly over St. Joseph. “It’s one of the ideal locations in the country for this.” Mr. Bakich, whose wife is a St. Joseph native, thought first of hosting a backyard barbecue at his in-laws. But his enthusiasm intensified and he decided to contact the airport manager. He found it’s at Rosecrans Memorial Airport where the center line of the eclipse will occur. Or as Mr. Bakich says, “the best possible location, where the event is the longest.” If it’s observed 60 miles south in Kansas City, it won’t last as long or be considered a full eclipse even at 99 percent coverage. His idea? Host a total solar eclipse watch party on the main runway, complete with solar-ready telescopes, educational opportunities and, yes, a barbecue. Other events will included teacher workshops, illistrated lectures by experts in astronomy. And what about the weather? Mr. Bakich has consulted the meteorological record, which indicates St. Joseph has never been overcast on that particular date, making visibility an almost guarantee. “You will never, ever see anything more spectacular than this,” Mr. Bakich said. “There’s no way I can over-hype this. Here’s some possibly bad news. The folks in charge at the airport are limiting the number of cars they will allow to park there for the eclipse to 5,000. This means the overall number of people at the event will be massively reduced. Also, they’re cutting off reservations August 11. So, if you don’t already have a parking spot reserved, do that now. The Linda Hall Library and the LHL Foundation are also taking a road trip to view the eclipse from a reserved location at East Hills Shopping Center in St. Joseph. Seating is limited. Schedule of events: 7:45 a.m. – Check-in at Linda Hall Library 8:00 a.m. – Depart for St. Joseph 9:30 a.m. – Arrive at East Hills Shopping Center in

St. Joseph 11:40 a.m. – Eclipse begins 1:06 p.m. – Maximum eclipse (totality) 1:08 p.m. – End of totality 2:00 p.m. – Depart East Hills for Linda Hall Library 3:30 p.m. – Arrive at Linda Hall Library Lunch will be on-your-own. Many dining options are available in and around East Hills Shopping Center. Except for sunflower seeds, food and non-alcoholic drinks are allowed on the busses. The Library will provide water and light snacks. People will travel from all over the world to see “totality.” The difference between a partial eclipse of 98% (which will happen in Kansas City) and a complete eclipse is significant. Only totality reveals the Sun’s corona, strange colors in the sky, and stars in the daytime. A large crowd is expected in St. Joseph to view the eclipse. Traffic delays could alter our schedule. We plan to arrive in St. Joseph well in advance of the eclipse start time. Plan for a hot and humid August day. Widebrimmed hats and sunscreen are advised. The Library will provide a tent for shade. The shopping center will have food vendors and restrooms available on site. There will also be a planetarium display

inside the mall. Registration: Seating capacity for the busses as already been reached. If you would like to be put on the wait list, please email events@lindahall.org with you name and the number of people in your party. You will be notified if space becomes available. Registration includes round-trip motor coach ride to and from St. Joseph, eclipse viewing glasses, and light refreshments. Please let us know if you require an ADA accessible motor coach. No refunds. We will depart Kansas City rain or shine. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. If you’re unable to travel to St. Joseph, you can still view the total eclipse. St. Joe is in the centerline of the eclipse path where you will see two minutes and 38 seconds of totality. But the path extends to just north of downtown Kansas City. Weston, Liberty, Smithville, Kearney, and Excelsior Springs will experience two or more minutes of totality. Even the Wheeler Downtown Airport in North Kansas City will have 47 seconds of totality. Check out the interactive Google eclipse map for locations along the path. Questions? Contact Eric Ward, Vice President for Public Programs, at 816.926.8753 or warde@lindahall.org.
