Places to Go: Arizona On the outskirts of town sits the remains of a once thriving circus before the city went broke and forced the closure of the show. Grief stricken, a few die-hard clowns refused to leave, and over time with nothing and no one to help with their despair, fell deeper into their chilling comedic insanity. Only the most desperate souls will pass through this ghost town for fear of falling victim to the stars of this now bloody show is very real. You’re not afraid…are you? Rumors swirl around one family living in what was once Phoenix, Arizona, with locals claiming that they have made a deal with a madman, who some call the devil himself. In exchange for sparing their lives, the Slidell family has agreed to herd and slaughter fellow humans to supply this nameless soul reaper, with the flesh he craves. Word has it that the screams and gurgling

heard amidst the roars of chainsaws at Slidell Family Slaughterhouse are actually from human livestock. Sitting atop a mass grave of badly decomposing “leftovers,” an unanticipated side effect has made matters worse, the Slaughterhouse has become a feeding ground each night as the local Undead are drawn to the thick stench of rotting flesh.

It all started with a flash in the sky and a loud crash. What looked like a comet was, in fact, an alien aircraft crash-landing in the cemetery. The aliens slowly emerged from the wreckage, only to be killed by the soldiers who came to investigate. What the soldiers didn’t know, as they dragged the bodies away to their barracks, was that the blood from the aliens would seep through the ground and disturb the corpses -- waking them from their peaceful resting place. Now the Undead walk among us, terrorizing anyone and everyone in their path.

Under the light of the Harvest Moon, the veil between our world and the dark world thins and haunting creatures appear to torment those sensitive to the psychic realm. Every year, devout worshipers of the dark occult descend, seeking the guidance of The Witch, paying her with offerings and sacrifices of inno-

cent souls. Long believed to be descendants of Lilith, the first demon to walk the earth, coven members search for new blood to open a portal to the other side and set their master free to walk the Earth. The witch only needs a few more souls to open the door... will you escape their murderous clutches?

Enter into the post-apocalyptic, wartorn settlement of few survivors. Those who remain here have turned on one another to fight for what little remaining resources are left. Radiation has poisoned the minds of some and mutated others to the point of madness and deformity. Attempt to make your way through the place where the last of humanity calls home...and where the deranged prey on the weak.

See More on Arizona Here!

The terror that ensued from 1997’s alien arrival in Phoenix continues as hundreds have disappeared without a trace of evidence leading to their whereabouts…or so we thought…after discovering that victims are being held in an old bunker and subject to inhumane testing, no one dares to attempt a rescue mission. But as the alien beasts continue to hunt down new test subjects, it becomes imminent for the government to intervene. Can you handle the nightmarish results of these once normal human beings? Places to Go: I The Haunted attraction in Gentry, Arkansas that’s inside an actual mortuary.

In 1929, Eunice “Mother” Carpenter, chose to erect a structure for a department store and death parlor under one roof. She hired a big-shot architect to design it, and it was the weirdest, topsy-turviest monster he ever created. It was a place where you could buy everything from carnival glass to moustache wax, and then have grandpa’s autopsy and funeral performed, all under one roof. During the depression, her undertakers stayed busy (poverty and malnutrition), but nobody could afford to shop in her store. But she thrived anyway. The ghosts claim she made a secret deal with the State to house children from its overcrowded orphanage in the vacant parts of her building, that she embezzled the money meant for their care and let them starve and freeze. They accuse her morticians of torture, experimentation, murder. In 1950, Eunice disappeared. Today, tickets are an unlucky $13 each. Open 7-11 p.m. Weekends Oct. 5 - 31

The State’s Most Original Ghost Town Places to Go:

If you’re into ghost-hunting and traveling Colorado in the name of all things scary, the Ghost Town of St. Elmo in Chaffee County is a must-see destination. Officially founded in 1880, the once-flourishing town of St. Elmo was an active gold- and silver-mining hot spot, with a population of nearly 2,000 people. At its peak, Mary Murphy Mine, the area’s largest mine, recovered $60 million worth of gold. St. Elmo was a hub for supplies arriving by train, and The Denver, South Park, and Pacific Railroad tracks

went through the town, continuing on through the historic Alpine Tunnel. But in the early 1920s, when the mining industry began to dwindle, the railroad discontinued service to St. Elmo, resulting in a mass exodus… except for two eccentric residents, a brother and sister duo named Tony and Annabelle, who toughed out the abandoned location and harsh winters through the 1950s—after even the postal service discontinued. They were eventually sent to a mental institution, leaving St. Elmo’s pop

ulation at zero since. Now open seven days per week from Mother’s Day weekend through September and into October, depending on the weather, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in October. Enjoy our warm and dry semi rustic cabin in St. Elmo! Cabin is one room and sleeps 3 people comfortably for $79 per night with a two-night stay. For more information, visit www.st-elmo.com. ELGIN - The largest Halloween party of the year in Illinois is so big, it takes the whole city to put it together for one night. This year, the date is Oct. 20. The town of Elgin has a top rated haunt, a horror fest, and a Krampus event, plus a very rich and somewhat “spooky” history. Nightmare on Chicago Street is a multifaceted gathering starting with Elgin’s Special Events and Community Manager who helps provide entertainment with staff zombies, performing freakshows and live music on stage. With three stages of live music, graffiti artists provide live performance art, a freak show and a DJ in the center of town. Much of the entertainment are returning artists, selected to fit the current theme. It’s eight city blocks of food and product vendors, celebrity appearances, music, bars, and a costume contest. And there assuredly will be ZOMBIES!!! “It may seem in those first 2 hours, that the elements are mere movement in the street, but once a visitor detects infected High School Marching Band musicians de-boarding a burning school bus; or tribal warriors invading Mad Max territory; or sexy Silent Hill nurses intimidating or capturing guests for the morgue ~ the guests understand this is indeed a unique outdoor city evening.” -Judi Brownfield, Street Theatre Coordinator Comprised of over 270 volunteer staff members, they work

The Haunted House is quite unique in that it has been organized by volunteers for over 50 years. The first Haunted House, built in 1964, was a tremendous success with 26,000 visitors. The Guild has continued this rich tradition and in 2010 the Haunted House was cited as one of the Top 10 in the nation by Rand McNally. This seasonal Haunted House attraction spreads out over an exhibit space of approximately 7,000 square feet. For the last six years, the Guild has gifted over $500,000 to The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. This funding supports several museum programs including (but not limited to) infoZone, free admission days, and out-ofschool programming for local youth.

It’s a Mystery

Why does the phrase, “You can’t miss it,” just about guarantees you will? How come the person in the far back of the elevator needs off first? Have you ever noticed that your hotel room is always right by the elevator, next to the ice machine? And on that subject, why is the closest ice machine also the one which is broken? When you go grocery shopping, how can you come home and still not have anything to make for dinner? Is it Karma that caused the TV network to show the very one episode you’ve already seen? Has anyone else observed how you only hit all red lights and traffic jams on the days you are running late? Why does hubby answer, “Yes,” to any and all either/or questions? Is it truly possible to look right at something and not see it? Yes, it is a mystery. Why? WHY? WHY? The world may never know. One of our family mysteries was that ‘secret’ ingredient in grandma’s spice cake. I asked. I really did. The answer? “Oh, there is no recipe. I just put in a little of this and some of that.” Yet, it was consistently delicious, so she must have had a recipe somewhere. We never found a written copy anywhere in her house. And this from the woman who lived through the Depression and therefore saved everything! She was honest, it wasn’t written down anywhere; she

must have had it memorized. A few years ago, I found a recipe that tasted suspiciously close to hers. The result? Now I know that secret spice and since I know I can duplicate it anytime, there is no longer any need to do so. Go figure. Instead I have begun a new quest to improve my gingerbread recipe. Gingerbread? In this season of all things pumpkin? Yes. Gingerbread is great in the autumn and on into the Christmas season. This recipe is a combination of the tried and true version found in the Better Homes and Garden cook book (you know the one, it comes in a five ring binder with the red and white checked table cloth patterned cover) and an English version found on Pinterest. Both are good, but as any great cook knows, after a little tweaking to suit your taste, it can be transformed from delicious to downright scrumptious! As an added bonus, it contains my favorite secret ingredient.

-44- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ October, 2018

MY FAVORITE GINGERBREAD 1 ½ tsp. ginger 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. cardamom (optional) 2 c. all-purpose flour 2 ¼ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt 1 ¼ c. boiling water ¾ c. light/mild molasses ¾ tsp. baking soda 6 tbsp. butter, softened ¾ c. packed light brown sugar 1 large egg, room temperature, beaten Preheat oven to 350 degrees. With cooking spray, mist the bottom only of a 9x9” pan. Sprinkle with sugar (not flour), shaking the pan to cover the bottom; invert pan and tap to remove excess. Add molasses to boiling water along with baking soda; set aside and let cool to room temperature. Cream together butter and brown sugar. Add beaten egg. Sift together dry ingredients. Add alternately with water/molasses mixture. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Serve with apple butter or a dollop of whipped cream. So, do you know which item is the secret ingredient? For the sake of space, I won’t tease by just giving a hint. I’ll simply tell you: boiling water. That’s right. Simple water. The mystery ingredient is solved. Now, all you have to do is figure out exactly which of my favorite recipes (other than above) is so popular because it can claim this secret ingredient. Ahh, and now that’s the mystery!

Haunted B By Kathleen Walls Contributing Editor / Publisher - American Roads and Global Highways

utler County has more than its share of ghost stories. Tiny Harmony, a National Historic Landmark District, was founded as a religious commune by George Rapp, a German Lutheran Separatist in 1804. Father Rapp had some strange beliefs to start things off. He felt that the “end time” was coming and demanded his flock to be celibate. Eventually, they died out. But they occupied Harmony until 1814 when they sold the town to a Mennonite group led by Abraham Ziegler. The Mennonites obviously respected the Harmonists because after they left, the Mennonites built a wall and installed a stone gate weighing about a ton that can be opened with one hand around the Harmonists cemetery. But maybe there was another reason; perhaps they wanted to keep something strange inside that wall. While visiting there, I happened to meet a

friendly older couple, the Meyers. On learning I was a visiting travel writer, they told of a strange happening at that cemetery. The Harmonists did not believe in tombstones, so they buried their dead without markers. Except for one. There is a tombstone for Johannes Rapp, George Rapp’s natural son and assistant, who died July, 27, 1812. The Myers saw a dark figure seem to arise from this stone. Shortly afterward, three of their friends died in rapid succession. Was the form trying to tell them something? Perhaps. Then perhaps it was just coincidence. But they know they saw that figure. Ironically, the ending of the transcription over the gates is from Corinthians and reads, “The trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be transfigured.” Another Harmony building that has been documented by paranormal groups is a well known German restaurant, The Harmony Inn. Built in 1856 as a home, it serves delicious German food. But the owner, Bob, won’t stay after the restaurant is closed by himself any more. He has had several interesting experiences as have his co-owner and some of the staff. One of the strangest experiences was when Bob had painted one room, left for a few minutes and returned to

Butler County,PA see someone had scrawled “Roy” in the wet paint. No one was in the place but him. He would hear all kind s of footstep on the stairs and laughter. Things would be moved around while the restaurant was closed. At one time people were quarantined in the attic. Then there is “Granny’s Room” where an elderly woman hanged herself. Kids in the restaurant often will talk to people others cannot see in the restaurant. People believe that there is a man and a little girl whose spirits inhabits the place. The nearby community of Saxonburg was founded by another German, John Roebling, the inventor of wire rope and designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, and his brother in 1832. Saxonburg Museum and park tell town history and have many of Roblings’ inventions including a replica of the Brooklyn Bridge. Their Main Street is filled with

homes and building dating back to the 1800s. There is a haunted hotel with the room where

President Woodrow Wilson stayed. The register from that time show he did not pay his bill. Steel Town Paranormal group investigated the Saxonburg Hotel. Supposedly there is a male sprit in the Woodrow Wilson room that is believed to be somewhat flirtatious. One of the women started to remove her shirt and the electronic meter spiked. In other parts of the hotel investigators heard footsteps and shuffling noises. Just down the street, there is a bed and breakfast, The Mainstay. It has a spirit as well. The Owner, Jim, said he doesn’t know the history but the ghost is named John. Both towns are a treasure even without the ghost stories. The Harmony Inn and the Saxonburg Hotel have some fabulous German food.

Top 3 Haunts

3. WYOMING TERRITORIAL PRISON LARAMIE - It was built in 1872 and stated out as a small facility with 42 cells spread across 3 floors. Each cell was tiny, but in times of overcrowding there were often 2 inmates per cell in rooms barely large enough for one. The prison housed a variety of criminals, but no capitol offenders and there were no executions staged here. In 1889, the prison was expanded to double the number of cells and additional facilities including a chapel and a dining room. In 1903 the prison was closed and converted into a n Agricultural experiment station. It is now a museum and state park, not to mention one of the most haunted places in Wyoming. One of the most prevalent spirits haunting the prison is said to be the ghost of Julius Greenwelch, a convicted mur-

derer who ran a cigar making operation from the prison! He seems to be a mischievous, but harmless spirit who likes to hide workmen’s tools – especially if they are making too much noise. He has also appeared to people who are napping when they should be working. His appearance is almost always accompanied by the scent of cigar smoke. 2. IRMA HOTEL CODY - The thing that Irma Hotel in Cody is best known for is that it was actually built by none other than Buffalo

Bill. However, what most people do not know is that it is also one of the most haunted hotels in Wyoming and is said to be haunted by Buffalo Bill himself along with a host of other restless spirits. Guests of the hotel have reported a wide range of paranormal activity including phantom footsteps and unexplained noises, but perhaps the most disconcerting of all is seeing a ghost that appears to be missing the lower half of his body! The hotel was named for Buffalo Bill’s youngest daughter Irma Cody and it is said that she is also haunting the property. An apparition matching her description has been seen in Room 16 which used to be her room. Guests who have seen her say she appears in the rocking chair in the corner of the room. 1. THE HISTORIC PLAINS HOTEL CHEYENNE - Another Wyoming hotel which is known for its haunted

reputation is Cheyenne’s Historic Plains Hotel. It is said to be haunted by not one, but three ghosts all of which passed over at the same time in a double murder suicide situation. It is believed that the three of them were involved in a love triangle which came to a tragic and deadly conclusion. The legend states that a newly married couple were having their honeymoon at the Plains when they got into a fight. The man left and when his bride went looking for him she discovered him in the arms of another woman. She shot both before turning her gun on herself. All three have been seen in various parts of the hotel and guest often report seeing doors and windows open or close by themselves!
