YÜÉÅ à{x Xw|àÉÜ With a little Luck of the Irish It’s been several years since I planted my own garden. In my opinion, there is nothing better on the supper table than a sliced ripe tomato accompanied by fresh corn on the cob and fresh strawberries shortcake for dessert, all the results of one’s own efforts. When I was a child, our family lived in the city. In the summertime, however, we spent almost every Thursday (my Dad’s day off from work) on the farm in the garden. We canned our own green beans and corn. Strawberries, rhubarb and peas went into the freezer. I can still remember the water dripping down my arms when sitting and cleaning the stems from strawberries. It was worth it once they were transferred to the top of the homemade ice cream or cake with whipped cream. During my teen years, we switched from my grandparents farm to our own and I quickly inherited the priviledge of mowing the front two-acre lawn with the brand new riding lawn mower. Since I wasn’t old enough to drive yet, this was the next best thing for me. Earphones and transister radios were the “in” thing and I could listen to my favorites as I drove round and round. (Why it took me to age 21 and already being a mother before I went to get my driver’s license is still beyond me.) But today, I let the kids mow the lawn, I buy my strawberries at the grocer and I have traded my gardening gloves for all the fun places to go, people to see and things to do in our wonderful U.S. A. This issue is filled with tips for those of you who do enjoy gardening. Me..I’m taking the day off to go to a concert (or two or three.) Ok, Ok. Maybe I will go plant a tomato plant or two in a pot on the back porch. With a little luck from the Irish, maybe they’ll grow this time.

Places to Go: 56th Annual Ind March 8-16 State Fair Grounds Indianapolis INDIANAPOLIS – A long, cold, snowy Hoosier winter will be brought to a welcomed halt on Saturday, March 8, when doors swing open to the 56th annual Indiana Flower & Patio Show. This traditional harbinger of spring celebrates finer outdoor living with a myriad of inspirational features including the return of the Urban Homestead, Grill University, the all new Brew Bracket Backyard Brewfest, small space gardening, the Think Spring education stage, over 400 expert exhibitors, and — of course — the gardens. More than 40 fabulous Showcase and Featured Exhibitor Gardens to replicate at home, or simply to use as creative muse for your own outdoor space, will be the stars of the show again this year. “Personal Spaces” is the theme of the 56th annual event. Landscape designers have been challenged to think outside the proverbial box and develop garden designs that best depict their view of finer outdoor living. The gardens will run the gamut — from warm, cozy, intimate gathering spots to expansive entertaining areas. Each will illustrate the latest in outdoor living: dramatic fire features; soothing ponds, streams and waterfalls; beautifully crafted structures; luxurious outdoor kitchens; trending patio furniture; plantings that engage all of the senses; new designs in hardscapes, and much more! The show runs Saturday, March 8 through Sunday, March 16 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds’ West Pavilion and Expo Hall, 1202 East 38th Street, Indianapolis. Show hours are Saturday 10 am to 9 pm; Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm; Page 10

Last year’s Urban Homestead exhibition in Expo Hall was a big hit with guests, so we’re bringing that back with even more insights into sustainable living. The Canal Center has exciting “kid friendly” interactive exhibits in twelve galleries that depict this 1832-1876 canal era from the beginning through construction, operation and finally its demise. A year after it was completed in 2004, the facility was awarded “the best new volunteer driven museum in the US” by the American Association of State and Local History. Thus ten years after opening and successful operation, efforts now center on creating even more excitement with renovations of three galleries. Additional exhibits are being added to
