This issue is all about Spring Break Whether it is with your significant other, the whole family, or just a friend, take time to relax and rejuvenate!

Up Close: From the Editor

Spring break is the perfect time for a getaway to a sunny destination. Falling between March and May of each year, spring break trips cater to families, college students, couples, and close friends alike. Plenty of cheap flights, exciting vacation offers, hotel packages, and celebration themes are available—and those who book well in advance will save in the long run. But alas, time is here... My first tip is to drive a little extra and save a lot! As you make your reservations, check out airports in major cities within 100 mile radius of home. For example, if you live in Connecticut, you will save hundreds by departing from New York instead of Boston or Hartford. In many cases you can find non-stop flights that will more than make up for the drive and put you on the beach sooner. Once you have found the perfect destination, there are several ways to keep your budget under control. For instance, if you want to get around at your destination after flight, don’t rent a car. Choose public transport – most popular vacation destinations have very good public transport systems that reach all the nightlife and great attractions for a nominal fee. I just returned from Las Vegas where I soon learned driving is nice, but parking is extremely limited if available at all. A one to three day bus pass was the way to go and the driver was more used to handling the busy traffic. We could relax and enjoy the scenery. Make sure you have everything you need – sunscreen products, hats, cameras, sunglasses and clothes may be more expensive where you’re planning to go, so make sure you buy them at home and pack them all, too. Again, I speak from experience. A whole afternoon was wasted searching for much needed walking shoes. Bring a travel mug because most resorts only have small drink cups. Most servers will fill them for refill prices. If it is insulated, then it’s even better. Drinks stay cold (or hot) longer. Book early – Early booking rates are usually much cheaper. Spring Break Party Packages – All Spring Break Party Packages are not the same. Look for packages that allow flexibility, offer the best price, and feature bars and clubs on the popular nights. Make sure you know if the parties listed include open bar. On a 4-Night party package, you can save over $100 in cover charges. One last piece of advice: Make your extended weekend getaway memorable. Whatever you do, relax and have fun. Until next time. . .

Editor’s Pick New Movie for Spring Break!

T

he iconic mystery-solvi n g teenager from the classic Nancy Drew books is back with an all-new movie in theaters March 15 from Warner Bros.! Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase is Co-Produced by Ellen DeGeneres, and the film stars Sophia Lillis (IT and “Sharp Objects”), Sam Trammell (“True Blood” and “This is Us”), and Linda Lavin (“The Good Wife” and Alice), and follows Nancy Drew in her new town, making new friends and on a mission to solve the case! After the death of his wife, Carson Drew decides to leave Chicago behind and make a fresh start with his daughter in River Heights. But for 16-year-old Nancy Drew, life in a small town is mighty dull. She longs for excitement, adventure, and the chance to make a difference. Nancy gets that opportunity when she is asked to help solve the ghostly activity at the Twin Elms mansion. Can she

help explain the creaking footsteps, exploding lightbulbs and the ominous creature? Is it the handiwork of high-school bully Derek Barnes? Or is it possible that the ghost of original owner Malcolm Colfax is back for revenge? Recruiting her best friends George and Bess, along with local “mean girl” Helen, Nancy Drew is on the case! Nancy Drew has been a #1 fe-

male heroine for young girls since the 1930s. There have been over 80 million books sold! The books have been translated in over 45 languages. There have also been other movies, a TV series and Nancy Drew video games. Generation after generation Nancy Drew is re-introduced to new fans – and we think new and old fans alike will love this all-new feature film! Lillis, the breakout star of the blockbuster film It, admirably fills the role of the iconic Nancy Drew, a centerpiece of Americana in literature, film, television and videogames for nearly 90 years. Filming Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase between working noteworthy roles in HBO’s Sharp Objects and the It sequel, Lillis embodies the 16-yearold sleuth in this all-new action-adventure that captures the intrigue and entertainment that have made Nancy Drew an inspiration to readers & viewers since her first appearance in 1930. Food Fun My kitchen has twelve sliding storage receptacles, three of which are reserved for miscellaneous content (AKA junk drawers). We all have at least one: the place where we store a jumble of odds and ends, clutter, castoffs and unwanted items which we can’t throw away because of the fear we may need them someday. Now, as junk drawers go, mine are fairly neat. One contains an assortment of appliance instruction manuals (never used), a set of corn on the cob holders (used once a year), and a hodgepodge of old keys, some with tags too faded to read. Without looking, I can say with confidence the other two drawers contain readily available pencils, pens, markers, note pads, rubber bands, birthday candles, matches, flashlights, batteries, tools which never made their way back to the garage, tape, scissors and twist ties. If I need anything else, some searching might be required. Speaking of twist ties, I saw a post on social media last week that asked the question: without using numbers, how old are you? I am so old, I remember bread in cellophane wrappers held closed with a sticky label on the end. What an improvement the twist tie was and still is because now bread comes in a bag which is re-closable, thanks to something as simple as the twist tie. Too bad, the same is not true

By Kandy Derden, Places to Go Editor So my next question: just how badly do I really want those bran flakes? When I am in the mood for cookies, the craving can be rather intense. Here’s why:

of a cereal package. Why are those boxes so hard to open? They’re not really, unless you plan to reclose it. I think we’ve all done battle with the tab which refuses to stay in that torn slot on the other flap. And here’s another question: what type of glue do they use to seal the inner bag and where can I find some when I need to glue something? I’m sure you know exactly what I mean. Who among us hasn’t tried the grasp and tug method to open cereal, snack crackers or chips? Without asking, I can predict the outcome: the contents exploded all over the room. And another thing, even if it doesn’t tear open and spill, it isn’t reclosable. Something as ingenious as a zip closure could solve this problem, but none of the cereal companies have stepped up to make their packaging user friendly.

1 ¼ c. unsifted flour ¾ tsp. baking soda ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt ½ c. butter, margarine or shortening 1 ¼ c. packed brown sugar 1 egg ¼ c. milk 1 ½ c. raisin bran cereal ¾ c. chopped salted peanuts Combine dry ingredients. Cream butter, gradually add sugar. Add egg and beat well. Add flour mixture alternately with milk. Add cereal and nuts. Drop onto greased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 8 minutes. Cool 2 minutes. Transfer to plate. Enjoy! How is it possible to enjoy these cookies without spending a lot of extra time cleaning up the aftermath of a cereal volcano? My personal solution was scissors – a pair in every drawer! Ditch the box completely, cut the bag open and empty the contents into a sealable container. Yes, Tupperware plus the addition of six pairs of scissors solved my problem. So, what’s in your junk drawer? March, 2019 ~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -7-

addle up for a unique spring break at an old-school dude ranch in Arizona. It’s like sleep-away camp for the entire family, but with better food and cozier accommodations. Rancho de los Caballeros has been giving families an insider’s look at cowboy life since 1947, so it’s no surprise they’ve mastered the art of the family vacation. The children’s club starts at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast before a ride on the trails or around the corral for the mini cowboys and girls. The kids are busy with swimming, crafts, hiking, sports and scavenger hunts while parents can spend some time relaxing or playing golf. After lunch, the family is re-10- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ March, 2019

united for some together time and more horseback riding or just horsing around in the pool. Then come dinner time, the kids are back to the club and a campfire while mom and dad enjoy dinner in the dining room. It’s the best of both worlds and, best of all, most activities in the children’s program are free of charge.

Hot Springs Arkansas For St. Patricks Day

Hot Springs adds a dose of humor to their St. Patrick’s Day events with their First Ever World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In 2019, the parade celebrated its 16th year. First ever? 16th year? Shortest parade? Oh Hot Springs, you’re so funny. The story of the parade begins with the world’s shortest street in everyday use — Hot Springs’ Bridge Street. A Hot Springs resident of Irish ancestry thought the only thing to do on the world’s shortest street is to hold the world’s shortest St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Today, the parade has turned into a multi-day event with a Blarney Stone kissing contest. The Arkansas Blarney Stone, said to have been discovered by a leprechaun in the forests around Hot Springs, sits in front of the Hot Springs Convention Center, and the annual Blarney Stone-kissing contest is known as Romancing the Stone. There’s also live music for the holiday, an appearance by the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, and a pop-up Irish pub, as well as the announcement of the parade King and Queen and a

whole lot more. The festivities draw more than 30,000 people each year. With its fun and quirky twist on the holiday, Hot Springs is definitely home to one of America’s best St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Where to Stay: Prospect Place Bed & Breakfast

Get a head start on making this season a memorable one by exploring some of the fun events happening across the state this month, from outdoor festivals and foodie events to attractions for the whole family. So let’s get started on planning our spring break! Visit the 46th annual Cherry Blossom Festival in New Haven (April 28) or the picturesque Dogwood Festival in Fairfield (May 10-12). Next, take in the sights and smells of the new season at the Hollister House Garden in Washington which is an American interpretation of such classic English gardens as Sissinghurst, Great Dixter and Hidcote, formal in its structure but informal and rather wild in its style of planting. Take your time to walk the grounds that features an abundance of both common and exotic plants in surprising color combinations. Look forward to more fresh spring blooms in early May at the annual opening of the 18th-century Glebe House Museum & Gertrude Jekyll Garden. Located on one of the oldest streets in Woodbury, the antiqued Glebe House is rich in both history and beauty, holding the only remaining garden designed by the renowned botanical designer, Gertrude Jekyll. St. Patrick’s Day

S

avannah is home to not one but two of America’s best St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. First up, their St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the largest in America, and has been running almost non-stop for 188 years. This year, the parade is set for March 16 from 10:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This main event brings everything together – family, friends and fun. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah is the second largest in the U.S., right behind New York. More than 300,000 people are expected to visit and enjoy the city-wide festivities. The parade features Celtic societies and Irish families, as well as Irish dancers and pipe bands from all over the East Coast. Altogether, the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade features 350 marching units and up to 15,000 people. Then the fun continues with Savannah’s 2-day St. Patrick’s Day festival, with live music, a food court, dancing, and a whole lot more. Slated for March 16 - 17 from 10 a.m. to midnight both nights, Vendors line the street with gifts and goodies and bands perform live music on stages all over downtown

Savannah. Events are ongoing at River Street and City Market. There will be live entertainment and activities to partake in, and also interactive artists, photo booths and food and beverage areas. Other St. Paddy’s-themed events happening in Savannah throughout the month of March include Greening the Fountain — when the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal pours green dye into the water of the fountain at Savannah’s Forsyth Park. There’s also the March of Dimes Shamrock Run, an Irish Heritage Dance, and a Shamrock Festival and Oyster Roast. Visit Savannah in March and you’ll agree: This city is definitely home to America’s best St. Patrick’s Day celebration. We give this destinations a big Shamrock Score of a 10!

Spring Break

Acadia National Park

L

ooking for a spring break one-stopshop? Search no further than Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. Bring your hiking boots — Acadia features non-standard hiking excursions that capture the natural beauty of Maine’s landscape. Traverse the ladders and ledges of the Beehive near Sand Beach. Keep in mind: though your kids will ascend the mountain like billy goats, this trail can be a challenge for adults with adult fears. If you’re a sucker for a good sunset, set your alarm and hike (or drive after April 14) Cadillac Mountain, the first place to see the sunrise in the United States. Not all the adventure in Acadia is uphill. The rich history of the region has given way to miles of carriage roads. If you’re visiting in late spring, we recommend the loop around Jordan Pond where you can stop for lunch at the Jordan Pond House Restaurant for tea and delectably buttery popovers. With all this daytime activity, spend your evenings in complete relaxation — the cozy cottages at the Mira Monte Inn & Suites are ideal for families. Plus, with its delicious restaurants and late night activities, Bar Harbor makes a perfect spring break home base for kids of all ages. -30- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ March, 2019

For Spring Break

Glacier National Park is for outdoor enthusiasts

For those who love the outdoors and the fresh air of spring, Montana is a top choice location. From spectacular mountain lakes to friendly towns surrounded by beautiful nature offering a wealth of activities, Montana is ready for Spring Break. Glacier National Park is one of the most popular Montana destinations, even in the spring. A vast national park that rests on the United States-Canada border, encompassing over 1 million acres, two mountain ranges, more than 130 lakes, and thousands of plant and animals species. Because this natural wonderland is at the center of what is often known as the “Crown of the Continent Ecosystem,” it is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise, with a range of recreational activities to enjoy, including hiking, biking, mountain climbing, and wildlife watching. The park’s habitats include rugged mountains, tranquil lakes, alpine forests, and meadows through which 700 miles of trails wind, just waiting to be explored. Spring is a beautiful and quiet time to be in Glacier National Park, however park visitors must be more self sufficient for there are very few services open in the park in the early spring. The park is home to the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road, an engineering marvel that spans 50 miles through the park’s wild interior, winding around mountainsides and boasting some of the most spectacular sights and views in Montana. It is one of the top Montana attractions. However, plwing begins in late March on the east side of the park and don’t focus on the Going-tothe-Sun Road until April. Portions of Going-to-the-Sun Road are open year round, however the entire road will not open prior to certain specified dates -38- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ March, 2019

Other unique destinations to explore in the park include the Goat Haunt, Two Medicine, and Many Glacier, where visitors can discover Native American history and historic homesteading sites and soak up spectacular natural landscapes. Glacier National Park is one of the most famous Montana tourist attractions. Although some services adjacent and inside the park are open year round, most of the concession services and services adjacent to the park reopen for the season in late May to early June. During shoulder seasons, lodging and other guest services are available in gateway communities. During the spring, lower elevations usually melt out by the end of April. As a rule of thumb, hiking trails on the edges of the park tend to be snow free quicker than towards the continental divide or middle of the park. O’neill Nebraska

for St. Patricks Day

Founded by an Irishman, O’Neill is called “Nebraska’s Irish Capital,” and it’s home to the world’s largest shamrock. So naturally, this town goes all in for St. Patrick’s Day. Every year, crowds gather to see that giant shamrock, installed in the town’s main intersection in the year 2000, as it gets a fresh coat of paint before the big party starts. Once the shamrock is all spruced up, O’Neill is taken over by a giant St. Paddy’s parade, passing right through the intersection and over the shamrock. Other St. Paddy’s-themed activities in O’Neill include a Shamrock Fun Run and a dodgeball tournament, as well as Irish-inspired performances by local

dance troupes and musicians. The festivities also include quirky events like an appearance by a hypnotist, a fish fry, and a Children’s Literature Festival featuring the reading of Dr. Seuss’s “Green Eggs and Ham.” For a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with a ton of local flavor, look no further than O’Neill, NE. Things to Do:

on Spring Break When it comes to the sinful deliciousness of a boozy milkshake, it turns out people will travel pretty far! That’s because Turning Stone Resort Casino has taken these dream drinks to a whole new level at their Upstate Tavern in Verona, New York.

Have a Boozy Milkshake

If you’re not familiar with the idea of a boozy milkshake, I promise you haven’t been this excited since you first heard of rosé ice cream. These shakes - which comes in flavors like Candy Bar Crush, Boozy Banana, Mocha Brownie, Sugar Rush and Bourbon Caramel - are spiked and super decadent. One look at that photo and an extended drive from wherever isn’t stopping anyone! More than 200 sold in one week alone (in the dead of winter)! “We have visitors from every region of the country and even Canada! And they come in so excited to try these full-loaded shakes. The hard part is deciding which one!” said Mallory Winters, Turning Stone Assistant Pastry Chef. The ingredients will immediately make your mouth water. For example, the Mocha Brownie includes Death Wish Coffee Vodka, chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, hot fudge, chocolate shavings, a mini coffee cup with St. Lawrence Empire Cream Whisky, brownie pieces and chocolate sprinkles. And the height of the toppings really does seem to defy gravity. You can view all these delish shakes here, and check out the ingredients on the Upstate Tavern dessert menu. Plus, these masterpieces are only $12. Transportation not included. But we promise it’s worth the trip. Or at least that’s the boozy buzz.

If eating is on the top of your list for a successful spring break, then you will love visiting Durham, because this city has been experiencing a food and drink boom lately. It has even been designated as the “tastiest town” in the south. Celebrating it’s 150th anniversary this year, Bull City’s walkable downtown provides easy access to a number of cool galleries. When the sun goes down, locals, college students and visitors can all be found bar-hopping between live music venues, lounges and dive bars. You’ll also want to sample the suds at one of several breweries, including the game-room-like Fullsteam Brewery, or find North Carolina ciders on tap at Black Twig Cider House, the Southeast’s first cider-focused restaurant. The Italian sandwich spot, Toast, should be essential lunching when visiting Durham. For breakfast, try one of two highly rated donut spots, Rise Biscuits & Donuts or Monuts Donuts, which you can work off by paddling the Eno River, located just 10 minutes from downtown. Sports fans can catch a baseball game from the Triple-A Durham Bulls. And while Durham is known as a hub for blues music, -46- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ March, 2019

more than a dozen music venues, including the popular Motorco Music Hall, offer lineups to please any concertgoer. Alpaca Peruvian Charcoal Chicken is best known for its Peruvian rotisserie chicken, cooked over wood charcoal and served from a bright red and yellow storefront. Acclaimed chef Ashley Christensen cited Alpaca (formerly called Mami Nora’s) as one of her favorite restaurants in Saveur because “the sides and sauces are really delicious, and the chicken’s seasoning, smokiness, and texture are just perfect.” If you enjoy horror films, come March 8-10 and watch a brand new genre feature during the Nevermore Horror and Gothic Film Festival taking place at the Carolina Theatre. Maritime Museum, especially if you’re little ones are fans of boats. You’ll look at the river outside differently once you learn how dangerous it actually is to the ships sailing it. Stay at the Cannery Pier Hotel, built on the site of an old cannery, 600 feet over the water. You’ll get views of the real working boats that ply the waters, and you can rent bikes to explore even more. Across the river in Washington, take a day to explore Cape Disappointment, which is much better than it sounds (someone had a bad day there!). Clamber over rocks to scan the waters for whales, who tend to migrate in March. The numerous hik-

Spring Break in Nashville

SHENANIGOATS YOGA As if yoga itself weren’t therapeutic enough, baby goats are at your aid to make practice even more enjoyable (and entertaining!). While you’re in downward dog, don’t be surprised if a friend hops on your back or nibbles on the grass at your feet. We can’t think of a better way to spend a cool spring morning. BELLE MEADE PLANTATION Every horse that has raced in the Kentucky Derby since 2003 has a bloodline leading back to Belle Meade Plantation. Roam the grounds where Secretariat and Seabiscuit were bred and raised. In May, enjoy Iroquois Steeplechase at Percy Warner Park and celebrate Nashville’s horse-racing legacy with a mint julep and wide-brimmed hat.

CENTENNIAL PARK A full-scale replica of the Parthenon sits in the middle of West End’s Centennial Park pays homage to Nashville’s original moniker, “The Athens of the South.” The sprawling park serves as a great location for a picnic lunch. An excellent art museum is located inside the Parthenon; venture inside to see a 42-feet-tall gold sculpture of Athena. CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL In celebration of Japanese culture, more than 1,000 cherry blossom trees are planted around Music City. While you can catch them in bloom for a couple of weeks each spring, the Nashville Cherry Blossom Festival — which is a day full of music, dance, dog parades, sumo suit wrestling, and plenty of good eating — is the highlight of the season.

CHEEKWOOD IN BLOOM The grounds at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens are aflame with pink, yellow, and orange each spring as thousands of tulips, daffodils, and friends are in full bloom. Take part in a tour of the garden or mansion, and on weekends, enjoy the beer garden and food trucks. TIN PAN SOUTH Any country song worth its salt tells a good story. Celebrate the craft of songwriting during Tin Pan South, the world’s largest songwriters festival, which takes place the first week of April. In venues across town, enjoy intimate sets from the likes of Lori McKenna, Carly Pearce, Travis Denning, and Bob DiPiero as audiences have done in years past

Spring Skiing Ski City is Basecamp for a Bountiful Spring Skiing. Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude Have Already Hit 400+ Inches This Year SALT LAKE CITY – Utah’s Wasatch Mountains are enjoying one of their best and snowiest seasons in years, making Ski City, a.k.a. Salt Lake, the ideal basecamp for spectacular spring skiing and urban après in the months ahead. It’s just a 40-minute drive from downtown Ski City to Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude, four of the greatest resorts in the country, each one averaging 500” or more of “The Greatest Snow On Earth” each winter. Thanks to 19,000+ rooms in the valley, a vibrant après ski experience and easy access to the mountains, Ski City is where it’s at. Here’s why:

Après Ski Redefined

After a day on the slopes, downtown is all about restaurants, bars and brewpubs, from tried and true places like Squatters and Desert Edge Brewery to Wasatch Brew Pub in Sugarhouse. Ski City has an amazing lineup of restaurants, diverse in style, taste and price. There are brand new places like George and Stratford Proper, and leading lights such as White Horse Spirits & Kitchen, Lake Effect, Avenues Proper and HSL. Sushi mavens

swear by Takashi while Red Iguana has some of the finest Mexican food north of the border. After dinner, it’s time to head to Beer Bar/Bar X, owned by Ty Burrell of “Modern Family,” for a nightcap, or make the scene at a nightclub like Urban Lounge.

Beyond Brews & Nachos

There’s much more to après ski in Salt Lake than brewpubs and sushi bars, attractions you won’t find in any other U.S. resort town. Check out the dinosaur collection at The Natural History Museum of Utah, take in a Broadway-style show at the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater, get symphonic at Abravanel Hall with the Utah Symphony, get a taste of cutting edge dance at Ballet West or head to Vivint SmartHome Arena and cheer on the Utah Jazz. Skiers and riders can also take an

afternoon off from the slopes and head to the Utah Olympic Park, 20 minutes from Ski City. The host venue of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games’ Nordic ski jumping, bobsled and luge events, as well as the first Olympic skeleton competition since 1948, it continues to be a major training site for current and prospective Olympians. It’s the place to make like an Olympian and book a run on a bobsled. Or take a speedskating lap around the ‘fastest ice on earth,’ skate or learn to curl at the Utah Olympic Oval. The Ski City Super Pass is available and good at all four Ski City resorts. One- and 2-day Super Passes may be part of hotel packages, or sold online. Chincoteague, Virginia Nestled on the coast of Virginia’s Eastern Shore region, surrounded comfortably on either side by the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, lies Chincoteague Island. Whether you circle the island on a pontoon boat or on a guided trip, you’re going to want to pack your binoculars. This island offers an up close and personal view of marshes, bays, and the wild ponies made famous in the Misty of Chincoteague novel. Chincoteague is a magical island, where herds of wild ponies run free, bottlenose dolphins play in quiet coves nearby and eagles soar over marshes teaming with marine critters — and a perfect location for a spring break adventure with your family! Chincoteague has fascinated children for generations, thanks to the island’s most famous resident in history: Misty the wild pony and the main character in a famous children’s book (and movie). Learn

Misty’s story as you and your family visit her home, and get up close to the wild ponies of today. Visit restricted areas of the wildlife refuge on the island. Explore the back trails of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on a leisurely paced bicycle ride. Plus, visit the NASA Visitor Center on Wallops Island to find out about the rockets that launch there! Visit the Beebe Ranch, once home to Misty, the iconic Chincoteague pony, and spend time with a “Saltwater Cowboy” firefighter to learn how the wild ponies have survived. Get close to wild ponies, bald eagles, terrapin, deer, elk and animals as your group leaders brings you to exclusive spots in the wildlife refuge that nobody else gets to see and normally are restricted. Ride the island waters by pontoon boat to watch for porpoises, and hear pirate lore as you sail past Assateague Lighthouse. This is a program for kids 7 and up, accompanied by any family adults.

People to See:

The Famous Leprechaun

Back in the day, students in the University of Wisconsin’s engineering and law schools held their own competing St. Patrick’s Day parades — but those were banned in 1940. Today, Madison’s St. Paddy’s events include the Madison Shamrock Shuffle, a 5K, 10K, and 2-mile walk benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County. There’s also Smilin’ St. Paddy’s Day, a Celtic revue filled with Irish humor and music. When you visit, be sure to check out the St. Patrick’s Day Parade around Madison’s beautiful Capitol Square. The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17 while the annual Shamrock Shuffle will be on

Saturday, March 16. The flag of Ireland is even hoisted in the Capitol Rotunda. Other things to do in Madison for St. Patrick’s Day include the Lucky St. Patrick’s Day Crawl and after party, and a family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day Celebration with face painting and crafting. In addition, there’s a St. Paddy’s cocktail class, the Shamrock & Shenanigans Virtual 4-Mile Run/ Walk with costumes, and traditional Irish food. Meet the famous Leprechaun, Joe Her, shown above . aka, Sean Patrick is a Leprechaun with personality and goodness of immeasurable proportion! His eyes sparkle with mischief, he is wise beyond his years, and his heart

glows with vast goodness. Joe decided 10 years ago to dedicate himself to helping improve the quality of life for families with disabled children. After the grave loss of his son, Logan, Joe started the Logan’s Heart Smiles Foundation and began raising money to construct wheelchair ramps for numerous appreciative families in the Madison area.

Things to Do

On Wyoming Spring Break Spring in Wyoming provides a perfect blend of snow-covered and warm-weather activities for an endless supply of things to do on Spring Break Snow falls through May in Wyoming, making many of the state’s best winter activities possible well into spring. Meanwhile, increasingly warm temperatures support a menu of even more things to do. Here are just a few ideas for springtime fun to help you welcome winter’s end. 1. Fat Biking Fat bikes, mountain bikes with extra-wide tires (usually 3.7 inches or wider), are designed to cruise on unstable terrain like snow. Designed for riders of all skill levels, fat biking is a growing trend, and groomed trails for the sport are popping up all over the state. Curt Gowdy State Park near Cheyenne recently added a 4-mile loop for fat biking, while Grand Targhee Resort in Alta gives fat bikers access to their more than 9 miles of Nordic trails and 2 miles of single-track routes. More places to find fat-biking trails in Wyoming include Nordic Trails Center at Casper Mountain in Casper, Sinks Canyon State Park in Lander and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. 2. Spring Skiing Many of Wyoming’s ski areas and resorts stay open through March and even into early April, which can mean shorter lift lines, great powder and sunny skies. At Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Grand Targhee Resort and other high-altitude ski areas, snowy nights and comfortably warm, sunny days are not uncommon during the spring. Other places to find prime spring skiing include Snow King Resort in Jackson, Snowy Range Ski Resort in Centennial and Hogadon Ski Area in Casper. 3. Snowmobiling Many of the state’s snowmobiling areas receive enough snowfall to keep trails open until midMarch or later. The Wyoming Range, between Alpine and Kemmerer, has about 336 miles of trails

that can have substantial snow for riding through May. The popular Continental Divide Snowmobiling Trail follows the Wind River Range for 829 miles and has a grooming season that typically runs until mid-March. Visit the Wyoming State Trails website for maps and up-to-date trail conditions. Other places to for sled heads to ride include the Snowy Range, Sierra Madre Mountains and Beartooth Mountains. 4. Road Biking & Mountain Biking While roads in Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks don’t open to motorized vehicles until mid- to late April, many are plowed for non-motorized use in late March (exact dates are determined by National Park Service). Depending on road conditions, spring biking in Yellowstone is permitted on roads between the park’s west entrance and Mammoth Hot Springs. In Grand Teton National Park, Moose-Wilson Road and Teton Park Road, running from Taggard Lake parking area to Signal Mountain Lodge, are accessible for spring bikers, hikers and roller bladers. Explore mountain biking trails within Wyoming’s state parks and recreation areas, including Vedauwoo and Happy Jack near Laramie, and Glendo State Park near Glendo. 5. Hot Springs The Cowboy State’s hot springs are open yearround, but are especially heavenly when there’s snow on the ground. Thermopolis’ Hot Springs State Park has free indoor and outdoor soaking pools, while Saratoga is home to the pampering Saratoga Resort & Spa and Hobo Pool, a locals’ favorite. Other soaking locales include Granite Hot Springs in Jackson and Boiling River Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. For more in Wyoming
