Happy New Year Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet? I have. Only one - not to make anymore New Year’s resolutions. They just get broken, right? Right. Had a nice quiet Christmas and actually got a chance to just sit around and rest with my dog, Annie. First time that’s happened in years. Just returned from Missouri for a visit with family. The sister bought me a plane ticket, but don’t really think I’ll do that again because I had to leave Annie behind. Would rather just drive so I can take her with me. She travels well, even on long trips. I think dogs can suffer from separation anxiety as well has humans can. I’m told Annie sits and stares at the door - waiting for me to return the whole time I’m gone. Don’t want to put her through that again. Don’t really want to go through it myself. Think I suffer from it too. Yep, I changed my mind about the New Year’s resolution think. I hereby make the resolution not to leave my dog behind when traveling to Missouri for a family visit. After all, she’s family too. Starting with this issue, you will find that a brand new “feature article” has been added. Another interesting new trend in bridal wear is short gowns, especially for brides choosing destination and beach weddings. While they may be short in length, these dresses are not short on style. Designers have debuted soft, romantic sleeves, including traditional cap sleeves in florals and tulle, modern silhouettes using vintage elements, sequin fringe and flutter sleeves, and romantic off-the-shoulder versions. "The softness and elegance of the sleeves in bridal wear mirrors today's general fashion trends, where designers are highlighting the elegance and beauty of the female form in very soft ways," says Charlene Parsons, who heads the fashion programs at Miami International University of Art & Design. Eco-friendly options have also increased in popularity. "There are

now numerous eco-friendly designers whose sole business is to create wedding dresses made with earth-friendly fabrics and materials, using techniques that are in harmony with the earth," says Crystal Shamblee, department chair of Fashion Design for The Art Institute of Philadelphia. Secondhand and vintage wedding dresses are another eco-friendly choice. Whatever fashion trends a bride chooses, one that will never go out of style is a gown that fits well, is figure flattering and makes the bride feel like she's the most beautiful woman in the world on her big day. Places to Go: Annual Pow Wow! LANCASTER - The public is invited to this 6th Annual Eastern Woodland Native American Celebration January 22-23 at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds. The theme is “Honoring Traditions.� Times are: Saturday 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Sunday:11 a.m. - 5 p.m.. Grand Entry Will Be At noon both days. Native American drumming, dancing, singing along with some of the best Native American Artist in the country. Traditional Native American food will also be available for your enjoyment. Pow Wows are social gatherings of hundreds of Native Americans who follow dances started centuries ago by their ancestors and that continually evolve to include contemporary aspects. These events of feasting, drum music and dance are attended by Natives and non-Natives, all of whom join in the dancing and take advantage of the opportunity to see old friends and teach the traditional ways to a younger generation. Pow Wows have deep historical roots, going back to the early to mid-19th century when huge summer gatherings of tribes were held on the plains, according to Richard West, Director of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) . The Heluska society of the Omaha in Nebraska had a certain dance with a lively step that it would perform, and other tribes began to notice it. As the concept spread, tribes embraced the tradition of dancing and singing in different ways, adding their own variaJanuary, 2012
tions. The roots of modern Pow Wows date back 50 to 70 years. From the small gatherings held on college campuses to large urban areas, today's powwows are contemporary intertribal versions of those 19th-century Pow Wows. They also serve to unite Indians. "One of the things the federal government did in the dog days of adverse Indian policy was to separate us Indian communities from one another," says West, Director of the NMAI. "Pow Wows are a powerful contemporary device for getting together as Indians; and, in that respect, they are a potent cultural and social connector among contemporary Indian communities." Things to Do: Paranormal Activity WILMINGTON - Due to the overwhelming demand to attend Paranormal Academy, a weekend where you embark on your own personal ghost hunting experience, additional opportunities to attend have been added. Effie's Place Bed & Breakfast in historic and haunted downtown Wilmington will offer this "ghostly" weekend January 20-21, February 17-18, March 16-17, April 20-21, May 18-19 and June 15-16. The "Academy" is all about participants learning the ropes of a paranormal investigation from an experienced group of investigators, taking guests through the ropes, from equipment to analysis. The weekend kicks off on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., with a review on technique, tools and safety (personal and spiritual), as well as an informal discussion on past investigations.
