There are so many great substitutes we can use to say “I Love You.” We just have to be tuned in to hear and understand them. It took me a long time to recognize the best ones, like “Call when you get home safe” and “headed to the store, anything you need?” Our love is shown every time we say “drive careful” or “sweet dreams” or even “Let me help you with that.” Yes, on Valentine’s Day we are reminded to say those three simple words accompanied by chocolates, roses, or cards. And that’s perfectly ok. Dinner and a movie have become a very common choices. Then there are the extravagant gifts like a diamond ring or necklace, an exclusive piece of art, or even new car. But what about all the other days? Do we really have to wait until Valentine’s Day to say or show our love? I, for one, vote for the ultimate gift of all and it can be chosen, planned, and scheduled in several different ways. You guessed it...An Extended Weekend Getaway! It doesn’t have to be an out-of-the-ordinary destination or have an expensive price tag. The key is simply taking time away from the normal rush and busyness of life that keeps us so occupied and out of reach with our loved ones. This issue has several ideas for places to go, things to do, and people to see for a special weekend “out and away.” So have fun and remember. . . whatever you do and wherever you go, make memories to last ahiles and take the time to say it: I LOVE YOU! And until next time...

Happy Valentine’s Day!

For luxury RV enthusiasts and those who love travel, this time of year is ideal for exploring the warmer climates of the U.S. and savoring time with your significant other. The following 10 romantic destinations have been selected due to their scenic drives, sensual allure, and idyllic scenery. Each ‘Romantic Stop’ has been researched but do call ahead to confirm hours of operation for parks, restaurants and other attractions and activities. Lightner Museum, an architecturSt. Augustine, FL

Located on Florida’s Historic Coast, St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565 and is known as the oldest city in the U.S. St. Augustine became a vacation destination after several luxury resorts were built at the direction of Henry Flagler, a founder of Standard Oil, who wanted to create a new American Riviera. The city’s Historic District is steeped with Gilded Age romance -- cobblestone streets, centuries-old Spanish-influenced buildings, hidden courtyards, ornate fountains, and grand monuments. Explore the grounds of Flagler College, a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, and stop for a couples’ picture in front of the fountain at the main entrance. The college was originally the Hotel Ponce de León, a decadent hotel commissioned by Flagler. Next to the college, visit the

al masterpiece built in 1888 as the Alcazar Hotel. Romantic elements of the museum include exquisite Victorian art glass, stained glass works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Oriental art. A couples’ carriage ride through the streets or a self-guided tour of the town’s collection of magnificent churches simply adds to the European allure of St. Augustine. RVers can spend the night at Compass RV Resort that offers full hookup, patio, and buddy sites. There’s also a spacious dog park, swimming pool, fitness center, and nature trail.

horseback ride on the white sand beach that ribbons the Atlantic Ocean (assistance is provided to make the ride accessible to all ages). Afterwards, walk arm-inarm and discover seashell treasures like great heart cockles, sand dollars, and olives. For couples’ pampering, visit the Omni Resort. Try a Swedish massage or cleansing facial. Make a reservation at Salt at the Ritz-Carlton, one of the only five-diamond restaurants in Florida, and consider booking the chef’s table in the kitchen. At the end of the day, take a sunset cruise to catch the spectacular oranges, pinks, and reds as the sun dips behind the horizon. RVers continuing their drive will find numerous RV resort options.

Savannah, GA

Amelia Island, FL

A 90-minute drive from St. Augustine is laid-back Amelia Island with its 13 miles of rolling dunes and pristine seashore. Its picturesque beaches are a perfect backdrop for togetherness. Start the day with a sunrise

With its 22 historic squares, Italianate mansions, cobblestone alleyways, and stately oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, Savannah is a romantic must. Pack a picnic lunch or order one from a local shop and spend a leisurely afternoon in Forsyth Park. Be sure to take a picture in front of the park’s grand, ninth-century castiron fountain, which was modeled after the fountains at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Take a guided kayak tour of the salt marshes, lounge on the beach, watch for dolphins, go bird watching at North Beach, and then enjoy a seafood dinner at a cozy waterside restaurant. RVers can spend the night at CreekFire RV Resort that’s just 20 minutes west of Savannah.

Trail to discover a handful of local wineries nestled in the Appalachian Mountains and its lush valleys. Every Saturday in February, participating wineries are offering wine and chocolate pairings. Other stops along the way include Cathedral Caverns State Park with its immense stalagmites, “frozen” waterfall, and stalagmite forest. The cave is a cool 60 degrees yearround, making it an ideal place to snuggle close to each other. For more couples’ activities, visit Lake Guntersville Resort State Park located along the banks of the Tennessee River. The park features an 18-hole championship golf course plus excellent fishing in Alabama’s largest lake. After a round of golf or fishing, RVers can spend the night at Guntersville State Park.

Cumberland Gap, TN & Middlesboro, KY

Start a romantic exploration of Northern Alabama in Gadsden. Visit Noccalula Falls Park and take in Noccalula Falls as water cascades 90 feet into Black Creek ravine. To experience the falls from a different perspective, follow the Gorge Trail underneath the waterfall for a kiss and incredible pics. Just a few steps from the falls are a quaint wedding chapel and access to The Black Creek Trail - a peaceful, scenic walk where couples can enjoy the beauty of nature. Next, take a breathtaking drive along the North Alabama Wine

For those who get a romantic spark from nature, add Cumberland Gap to the itinerary. The town is nestled at the foot of the towering Cumberland Mountains and is a majestic passageway through the mountains between Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. which delivers panoramic views of the three surrounding states. To reach the overlook, start at the park’s Visitor Center and take the four-mile-winding Skyland Road up the mountain (the road is closed to vehicles longer than 20’ but a shuttle ride can be arranged). Decades ago, Cumberland Gap was known as “The Wedding Place” of the Tri-State area. Passenger trains arrived daily with thousands of couples who wanted to tie the knot in the historic hamlet. Today, the town still has a quaint Wedding Chapel plus a small downtown with a collection of cute shops, restaurants, and the Little Congress Bicycle Museum. The museum is free and it’s a perfect place for couples to head inside to take in a museum that’s unique to the area. RVers can choose to stay overnight in one of the many state parks that dot the area.

Hot Springs, AR

ROAD TRIPS . . . Cont. Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs is a southern gem. For couples, it offers a mixture of relaxation and exploration set against a backdrop of history. Hot Springs National Park, which was established in 1921 to preserve the 47 hot springs that flow out of Hot Springs Mountain, is celebrating its centennial this year. While Hot Springs National Park is the second smallest urban park in the country, it still offers 26 miles of trails. Trails begin in downtown Hot Springs and vary in length. Those who are adventurous can make their way to the top of Hot Springs Mountain or West Mountain either by foot or a scenic drive. The park includes historic Bathhouse Row with eight grand bathhouses that were constructed between 1892 and 1923 and built over the naturally occurring hot springs. Today, enjoy a private soak in the mineral-rich, thermal waters at two of the original bathhouses -- the Buckstaff Bathhouse or Quapaw Baths & Spa. Buckstaff offers the Traditional Bathing Package, which recreates the bathhouse experience from the early 1900s. Each location also offers a menu of modern-day spa services. Another don’t-miss item is the Grand Promenade. Located directly behind Bathhouse Row, the half-mile red-brick walking path is perfect for a romantic stroll. The walk delivers views of historic downtown Hot Springs. Along the way, there’s an open hot spring and plenty of benches, ideal for enjoying quiet time together. Approximately one hour from

RVers can spend the night at Blazing Star RV Resort that combines modern luxury with picturesque countryside. Amenities include an exercise facility, lagoon pool, bocce ball courts, and horseshoes.

Albuquerque, NM Slow down and get in touch with each other and nature at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. Within Albuquerque, stroll through Old Town’s narrow streets, weave through century-old adobe buildings and houses and peruse artisan shops and galleries. Finish the day with a visit to Apothecary Lounge’s rooftop bar with views of the Sandia Mountains and downtown skyline.

Sedona, AZ

and book first-class passage on the Verde Canyon Railroad to take in the “love birds.” According to the railroad, in February, “The bald and golden eagle populations are at their peak and the clear waters of the Verde River are a perfect respite for a variety of migrating raptors … looking for romance.” Enjoy an intimate table for two in front of a picture window that delivers sweeping views of the amazing red rock formations and native flora and fauna. During Valentine’s weekend, there’s a special Chocolate Lovers package with a curated selection of artisan pastries and chocolates plus a champagne toast. RVers can spend the night at Verde Ranch RV Resort, ranked as a top RV park and just 30 minutes from Sedona.

Ouray, CO

If red and pink are the colors of love, Sedona is the epicenter. Take the Red Rock Scenic Byway and keep an eye out for romantic stops along the way like Cathedral Rock Vortex. The vortex energy is said to be feminine and delivers feelings of softness, receptiveness, and compassion. For couples who connect with golf, along the Byway are three golf courses that are open to the public. Don’t miss the Sedona-Oak Creek Airport, one of the most scenic airports in the country. The airport is located on top of a high mesa overlooking the city. Sit outside at Mesa Grill and watch as helicopters and Cessna and Beechcraft planes take off for new adventures. Travel 25 minutes to Clarkdale

Often called the Switzerland of America, Ouray is an old mining town with abundant southwest charm and winter alpine beauty. Its setting in a box canyon surrounded by the San Juan Mountains makes it a true jewel. For steamy romance, couples can book a soaking in the mineral-rich, sulfur-free waters of Wiesbaden Hot Springs or Ouray Hot Springs Pool, surrounded by 13,000-foot snow-capped mountain peaks. Other Ouray adventures include the Box Canyon Waterfall and

Park. The park is just a 5-10 minute walk from Main Street and is a rare opportunity to see climbers from around the world scale dramatic and towering walls of ice. Lessons are available for first-timers who’d like to give the sport a shot. For couples who enjoy the vitality crisp winter air brings, local outfitters provide snowshoes, cross-country ski equipment and snowmobile rides that lead to pristine, snow-covered meadows and forests. In many ways, the town of Ouray is a magical step back in time to a quieter way of living. Most of the businesses on Main Street are family-owned by local townspeople. There’s also a preponderance of painters, stained glass craftsmen, woodworkers, silversmiths, and photographers who create magnificent and unique works of art, inspired by the majestic mountains and unparalleled scenery of the area. RVers can spend the night at Ouray Riverside Resort and enjoy 10 acres along the Uncompaghre River, surrounded by mountains and waterfalls. With a multi-faceted background that includes running a theatre company, mastering the fine art of interior design and forging a successful career in real estate entailing several properties in California and elsewhere, Sarah Salvatore in 2018 set her sights on converting three optimally-located Big Bear cabins into idyllic bastions of romance, family together-

ness and natural splendor. According to Sarah, a mother of two who’s married to film composer, noted musician and Midnight Moon Cabins partner Troy MacCubbin, “Given the importance of tourism to Big Bear and the explosive growth of vacation rentals in the community, we found three years ago that many of the available cabins in the area were dated and old-fashioned. Our goal was to bring the Big Bear cabin experience into modern times while fully preserving the outdoorsy, all-natural mountain resort ambiance that defines the area.” “Today, our original dream has come true beyond our wildest expectations thanks to our cherished friends and neighbors in Big Bear as well as the wonderfully supportive guests we’ve welcomed over the past three years who make running Midnight Moon Cabins a genuine labor of love each and every day.”

People to See

Romantic Extended Weekend Ge Walla Walla is so nice, they named it twice. Honored for the second consecutive year as America’s Best Wine Region, and boasting a flourishing farm-to-table culinary scene, this rural-chic town in central Washington has earned a reputation for continually building upon its successes as opposed to resting on its laurels. With its sweeping landscape of wheat fields, vineyards, and farmland, not to mention its health and safety-minded Peace of Mind Pledge, Walla Walla continues to delight and entice visitors with no fewer than 11 new businesses opening their doors in recent months. Among the most notable, a new luxury winery resort, three new restaurants, three new tasting rooms, and four other businesses, including a curated grocery store, an elevated general store, an artisan showroom, and an educational hops tour. “It gives me great joy to see these new businesses opening their doors,” Says Robert Hansen, Executive Director of Visit Walla Walla and Walla Walla Valley Wine. “The common theme running through these new businesses is a unified connection to place and community supporting the local landscape, artisans, and history that makes Walla Walla so genuinely unique.” Following is a list of some of the notable businesses that have opened their doors in Walla Walla in recent months: THINGS TO DO Showroom at Colville: The Showroom on Colville was built in the 1930s as a showroom for auto sales in the center of downtown Walla Walla. In October of 2019, the Showroom on Colville underwent extensive renovations which unveiled the beautiful bones of the structure, and from there the story began to blossom. A corner of downtown Walla Walla honors local history to gather and celebrate the community with local-centric artisans and purveyors. Shops include TMACS, The Market by Andy’s, Wildlings Co. kids boutique, and many more. -26- | EXTENDEDWEEKENDGETAWAYS.COM ~ February, 2022

Walla Walla General Store: A new home, kitchen & gift store founded by Jean Bender and Peggy Frasse. The store opened to locals & visitors alike on May 6, 2021. From small delights, such as penny cent candy to homewares from makers such as Simon Pierce, Walter G textiles, Riedel and Staub - there is something for everyone at the Walla Walla General Store. Much more than just a retail space, co-founders Jean & Peggy envision the store as a space for community. Following a successful summer Art Series, resident Allison Palmer will host a continuation of “Make for Joy” there this fall. Weekly Monday-Wednesday classes will begin in September, and

etaway at Walla Walla

continue through December. Walla Walla Brews Cruise: Walla Walla is known for wine, but it’s also home to plentiful craft beer and cider. Alongside thousands of acres of vineyards are century-old wheat fields and orchards stretching across the valley. Generations of wheat farmers have made their home in Walla Walla and now support a growing community of brewers. Walla Walla Brews Cruise tours are knowledge-based tours where you will learn about the process of brewing beers and crafting cider, with a guided discussion of varying styles of alcohol. Foodscape Walla Walla: Foodscape could techni-

cally be described as an online grocer, but it’s so much more. It’s a place to acquire food, talk about food, or gather meaning from food. It was started by Hannah MacDonald, a longtime chef, local, and significant influencer on the Walla Walla food scene over the past decade. Foodscape highlights the area’s bounty, from food to all the agriculture offerings: produce, meat, and seafood. They also directly import hundreds of spices from all over the world, as well as other specialty products like olive oil, seafood, and vinegar. Foodscapes give locals and visitors alike the tools that they need to cook any cuisine under the sun. As the unofficial capital of Washington wine country, Walla Walla is home to more than 120 wineries, a nationally recognized culinary scene, access to an abundance of outdoor recreation, and an arts & entertainment scene that rivals cities many times its size. This community of just over 30,000 residents is known for many things, including its friendliness and hospitality, the quality of its wine, and of course the famous Walla Walla Sweet Onion. An easy and scenic four-hour drive from Seattle, Portland, or Boise, Walla Walla can also be accessed via Alaska Airlines’ daily nonstop flights from Seattle. For more information and to begin planning a trip to Walla Walla, visit www.wallawalla.org. DINING & RESTAURANTS AK’s Mercado: One of Walla Walla’s top eateries, Andrae’s Kitchen, which Food & Wine magazine’s Ray Isle once described as “hands down the best restaurant inside a working gas station in America,” recently relocated to its own space on Main St. in the heart of downtown Walla Walla. Focusing on tacos, smoked meats, and other street food, Mercado is inspired by Chef Andrae Bopp’s love for the cuisines of Oaxaca and New Orleans, among other places, with a craft cocktail program curated by local February, 2022 ~ EXTENDEDWEEKENDGETAWAYS.COM | -27-

mixology legend Jim German. The venue also features various popups from Secret Squirrel wine, Daylight Plant Co, Walla Walla Cheese Co. and others. The Kitchen at Abeja: Those with a taste for wine country living have yet another reason to visit Abeja, a 38-acre historic Walla Walla farmstead and home to the acclaimed Abeja winery and bucolic Inn at Abeja. The Kitchen at Abeja, which opened July 13, offers a fine dining experience showcasing innovative wine country cuisine and celebrating the Pacific Northwest’s seasonal bounty. Dinner guests choose from a five or seven-course prix fixe menu, as well as an optional wine pairing menu. Executive Chef Elodie Li, who returns to her home state after two years of cooking in Michelin two-star restaurants in Provence, France, collaborates with Abeja winemakers Dan Wampfler and Amy Alvarez-Wampfler on the menus,

updated weekly. Surrounded by the winery’s vineyards and gardens, The Kitchen at Abeja is a rich, refined wine country experience. The Kinglet at Whitehouse-Crawford (opening early 2022): Farther on the horizon is The Kinglet at Whitehouse-Crawford, a new bistro eatery in the historic Whitehouse-Crawford Planing Mill building, from acclaimed Seattle Chef Maximillian Petty. A multiple James Beard semifinalist, Petty’s menu will range from exuberantly curated items, which built his reputation at Eden Hill, to a bar and lounge area that will stay open later with a snack-heavy lineup, including a pizza oven and an extensive cocktail program. TASTING ROOMS Moonbase Cellars: The Blue Mountains and rolling wheat fields of Walla Walla enticed Laine and Drew Pauk to call the valley their home. That, and their desire

-28- | EXTENDEDWEEKENDGETAWAYS.COM ~ February, 2022

to make wine with a straightforward approach amidst an ideal viticulture climate. Moonbase Cellars’ philosophy is to find fantastic vineyards suited for a specific grape variety, sourcing excellent fruit from premier vineyard sites in the Walla Walla Valley, including multiple locations within the coveted The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA. As for the name, Drew has always been fascinated with space. Though his dream of becoming an astronaut didn’t work out, he managed to combine his love for wine and space with Moonbase Cellars. Kinhaven Winery: This new family-owned small lot winery and vineyard is perched atop a picturesque knoll in the Southside winery district of Walla Walla. The property, with 8 acres of Merlot, Cabernet, Carmenere and Malbec, enjoys unobstructed views of the Blue Mountains and is the perfect setting for family and friends to connect while enjoying

their thoughtfully crafted wines. Purchased in 2019 by Terry and Lisa Davenport, who also own the recently renovated Boyer House. From dining in the vines to weddings, the combination of Kinhaven Winery and Boyer House sets up for the perfect family and friend gathering. 5 Dollar Ranch Brewing: Self-proclaimed as “Walla Walla’s best new brewery in 2021,” this newcomer opened in June 2021. Located on the south side of town along the Oregon border on twelve acres of farm property, with sweeping views of the Blue Mountains. An evolving menu of hop offerings is fit to appease the novice to beer connoisseur. The location is both dog and kid-friendly. According to brewer and owner Josh Hulett, while he loves all of his beers, the Hazy’s are not to be missed. Hoquetas Wine Company: Located at the Port of Walla Walla wine incubator facility in the

Walla Walla Airport District, Hoquetas Wine Co. opened its doors in September of 2021. Started by musician turned winemaker Robert Gomez and his family, the winery focuses on producing wines that are both expressive and representative of the region’s terroir. Hoquetus, a musical method where vocal parts alternate to create a single melody, speaks to Gomez’s musical approach to winemaking, where the ingredients are carefully composed to create a melodious pour. Runway Market: Located in the airport district of Walla Walla’s wine region, Runway Market is a sparkling wine bar serving up local bubbles. The Market serves an assortment of food options, including picnic boxes, paninis, flatbread pizza, and various other grab-and-go options. All tastings include complimentary gourmet popcorn. Cathy Bay and her husband opened Runway Market

in 2021 with the hopes of being a stop for not only bubbles and food, but laughter and celebration. LODGING Yellowhawk Resort (formerly Basel Cellars): Yellowhawk Resort is an 84-acre hillside retreat on Walla Walla’s south side. The resort features a sparkling winery and tasting room with farm-totable dining, a swimming pool and cabanas, lodging, and event space for weddings, reunions, and corporate retreats. As you enter the gate and wind up the hill to the estate house, the elevated setting provides a sweeping outlook on the fields of wheat, lush vineyards below, and the Blue Mountains in the distance. The property was purchased in December 2020 by Pacific Northwest hospitality leaders Dan Thiessen, Chad Mackay, Scott Clark, Philip Christofides, and Paul Mackay, and is part of the Revelers Club loyalty program.

A Romantic Newport Cliffwalk

The Newport Cliffwalk is a perfect stroll along the New England coast. This is a popular “top pick” for a first date in New England. The walk itself is about 3.5 miles long, but you don’t have to walk the whole thing to take in the ocean views. And depending on how the conversation goes, a snack may be in order as there are nearby restaurants readily available for service. Others may prefer to sit and simply enjoy the beautiful view. The Cliff Walk along the eastern shore of Newport is world famous as a public access

walk that combines the natural beauty of the Newport shoreline with the architectural history of Newport’s gilded age. What makes Cliff Walk unique is that it is a National Recreation Trail in a National Historic District. It was designated as a Natl. Recreation Trail in 1975, the first one in New England. If you’re wary of “Cliff” being in the name, don’t stress. The Cliffwalk has some high points, but all dangerous areas have a gate or are in some way contained. It’s perfectly safe to walk, and there are plenty of picturesque opportunities!

The New Frenchmen Hotel

NEW ORLEANS - In time to welcome guests making the pilgrimage to New Orleans for the return of Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest, the fully renovated and reimagined The Frenchmen Hotel will open in February. There is nowhere better than iconic Frenchmen Street to celebrate the rebirth of New Orleans’ favorite season. Award-winning entrepreneur and restaurateur, Robert Thompson, has thoughtfully reimagined and breathed new life into the historic, boutique hotel situated at the doorstep of the treasured Marigny neighborhood, just one block off Esplanade and the French Quarter. “It’s an incredible privilege to reopen one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in NOLA,” said Thompson, founder and CEO of Angevin & Co., which purchased The Frenchmen Hotel in June 2021. “I’ve been in love with New Orleans for a long time and moved my family here full-time last year. It’s a dream come true to dedicate the revival of The Frenchmen Hotel to the people and the place that’s meant so much to me.” Each of the 27 guest rooms of The Frenchmen Hotel has been entirely renovated using Leonor Fini, a painter who embodied the creative, eccentric and avant-garde characteristics of the French surrealist movement, as the muse. and washed with energetic, rebellious Fini hues. Guests will find in each room colorful vintage rugs, the original ceiling medallions and different pieces of curated art works that celebrate femininity and a bohemian lifestyle. In addition to enticing rooms, the refreshed and refined aesthetic is sophis-

ticated but not intimidating, centered around an intimate, lush pool courtyard. Thompson and team are leaning into his deep expertise in food and beverage service to revitalize two on-property bar spaces, including an outdoor mezzanine bar reserved for guests of the hotel. cocktails at the new hotel bar, Midnight Revival, which also will celebrate its grand opening on February 1, 2022. The atmosphere at Midnight Revival will complement Frenchmen Street with live music and a cocktail menu that features both classic and tropical libations. Visitors and long-time locals can step into Midnight Revival and immediately feel the energy of New Orleans. “The spirit of this city makes you feel like the night is always young, and we want everyone - from first-time visitors to seasoned revelers - to manifest that magic each time they raise a glass in Midnight Revival,” said Thompson. The Frenchmen Hotel is the first hotel from Robert Thompson’s Angevin & Co. hospitality portfolio. Earlier this month, Thompson announced the purchase of another historic New Orleans hotel, The Whitney Hotel, planned to re-open following a top-to-bottom renovation and the addition of a restaurant, bar and flower shop, in early 2023. Natchitoches Main Street

Older than New Orleans, Natchitoches (pronounced Nack-atish) in north central Louisiana was founded as a French outpost in 1715. A passion for architectural conservancy has earned the city a designation as a “Most Romantic Main Street” community by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Two National Historic Districts–downtown Natchitoches and the campus of Northwestern State University–have preserved the early charm of the city. Downtown shops and restaurants with wrought iron balconies face the beautiful Cane River Lake. The brick-paved streets along the banks of the Cane are familiar on-screen scenes from “Steel Magnolias” and others featured on the Natchitoches Film Trail. Natchitoches is easy to access via I-49 which connects to I-20 to the north in Shreveport and to I-10 in Lafayette, to the south. Commercial air service is an hour away at the Alexandria International Airport and the Shreveport Regional

Airport. Proposal spots and romantic vistas are everywhere. Enjoy a free, guided Historic District Walking Tour or a carriage ride with the Cane River Carriage Company. Nestled at the north end of the downtown riverbank area, Beau Jardin features a waterfall flowing into Cane River Lake surrounded by greenery and flowers. Drive a leisurely four miles north of Natchitoches to the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Grand Ecore Visitor Center on an 80-foot bluff high above the Red River and gaze at panoramic views of the river and miles of landscape. A little less than 1.5 hours south, Longleaf Vista in Kisatchie National Forest is the second highest elevation in Louisiana. Take in views of the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness Area from a stone gazebo, or hike on the 1.5-mile interpretive loop trail. Part of the appeal of a Natchitoches visit is its unique lodging options. Stay in one of more than 30 bed and breakfasts ranging

from Creole style cottages to a lakeside oasis. Some are tucked away, others are part of the charm of downtown. Some have private entrances and balconies overlooking the lazy flow of Cane River or the Lake. A full slate of hotels, motels and inns, from nationally known brands to local gems make this a city of hospitality. End the day with dinner and one of the most breathtaking sunsets in Louisiana at Mariner’s Restaurant overlooking Sibley Lake. The menu features seafood specialties along with casual favorites in an outstanding setting. www.Natchitoches.com Journalists: For more Natchitoches story ideas and downloadable photos, go to https://www. travelmediapressroom.com/louisiana/natchitoches-louisiana/

Bliss on the Bay

Renée S. Gordon Galveston, Texas is a 46-mile long, 3-mile wide barrier island in the enviable position of being a destination that offers equal measures of outdoor activities, exceptional architecture, unique dining, entertainment and accommodation options and a nationally significant history. The city boasts 32 miles of gulf beaches and a 17-foot high seawall, 10.3 miles long, the longest continuous sidewalk in the country. Situated on the main trans-Gulf migration route the island is one of the country’s premier birding destinations. At East End Lagoon Nature Preserve birders can see birds in the wetlands and tidal pools from their vehicles. Juan de Grijalva first sighted Galveston in 1519 but it was Cabeza de Vaca’s whose party arrived on western Galveston Island, inhabited by the Karankawa, and named it “Malhado” or “Isle of Misfortune” in the 1520s. De Vaca’s journal is one of the earliest accounts of European contact in Texas. In the 1780s Spanish navigator, José de Evia, surveyed the Gulf Coast and named the bay Galvezton for Bernardo de Gálvez the Spanish Viceroy. Americans arrived in 1815 when Henry Perry landed 3 ships, commissioned to disrupt Spanish trade. By 1808

the Atlantic slave trade had been abolished in the US but the trade thrived around the Texas Gulf. The notorious pirate Jean Lafitte entered the trade in the region in 1817 with his base, Campeche, in Galveston. There is evidence that Lafitte’s

men kidnapped a Karankawa female and this act led to a raid on his compound. The natives were defeated by use of superior weapons. The bulk of Lafitte’s business was in African slavery. He sold to middlemen, most notably Jim Bowie, who purchased them by weight. Lafitte would also claim he “found” them, turn them over to customs and repurchase them at US government sales. This made it legal to sell them in the US. It is estimated he sold approximately 2000 slaves. The remains of Lafitte’s home, the Maison Rouge or Red House, can still be seen. A captured ship

yielded the red paint used on the façade and it is documented to have had 12 gables, 10-ft. arches, a cannon in the cupola and a substantial exterior staircase, the only remaining portion of the house. After firing on an American ship Lafitte was given 60 days to vacate. He left on March 3, 1821 after burning everything to the ground. The remains of the staircase are on Harborside. The Maison Rouge is one of the most haunted island locations. People claim to have seen lights, apparitions and have heard sounds. The

property’s most ghoulish spirits are said to be a pack of 12 black hellhounds supplied by a voodoo priestess. They were trained to hunt and capture men. The 1911 Hotel Galvez is believed the most haunted site. It has a number of ghosts and has

y, Galveston, Texas been featured on television. The 9,328-ft. hotel has 226 rooms and was constructed in a combination Mission and Spanish Revival styles. Once known as the “Vegas of the South,” the hotel played host to presidents and celebrities as well as spirits. Sister Katherine, a resident spirit, drowned in 1900. She served in an orphanage and when a storm came she and the other Sisters of Charity tied the children to their bodies in hopes of saving them. The nuns and more than 80 children died

bound together. It is theorized that she may be buried on the grounds of the hotel. In 1900 the Great Storm, this was prior to naming storms, was the deadliest natural disaster in our history. The storm killed between 9-12,000 people. The large

death toll and diminished population led the people to inter people where they fell, making the island a large burial ground. Many of structures are built on gravesites. Ghost tours are numerous and thematic. Downtown Galveston encompasses the longest row of historic buildings and one of the largest concentrations of Victorian architecture in America. The Moody and Bishop’s Mansion, both Texas Historic Landmarks, are open for tours and are outstanding architectural examples. The Bishop’s Palace has been listed as one of the most significant buildings in the US. The Texas Heroes Monument is located near Bishop’s Palace. It was gifted by Henry Rosenberg to commemorate those who participated in the 1836 Texas Revolution. Bronze figures adorn the 72-feet tall monument. Moody Gardens opened in 1986 with the goal of combining education with enduring lessons on conservation and wildlife. There are three pyramids, the Aquarium, the Rainforest and Discovery, showcasing marine animals, plants, animals, reptiles and science exhibits. The complex also

includes a water park, zipline, a 3D theater, golf course, paddlewheel boat and hotel. It is one of the premier destinations in the country. Bay Tours are offered at Pier 22 along with The Texas Seaport Museum and 1877 Tall Ship Elissa. The 2-story museum relates Texas’ maritime history through photographs and documents. More than 133,000 immigrants entered the country through the Port of Galveston and much of their information is computerized and available in the museum. The port was also one of 48 entry ports for the transatlantic slave trade. In June 19, 1865 Maj. Gen. Granger issued General Order No. 3 calling for “absolute equality” for the enslaved. This act is commemorated and has been celebrated as Juneteenth from that time. The word is not the deed and troops were sent, 75% were black, to assist in enforcing the order for the 250,000 enslaved in the state. A history trail traces their path in Galveston. The showpiece of the trail is the 5,000-sq, ft. “Absolute Equality” mural. The mural depicts a series of scenes of historical significance. Galveston is a great destination. eady to head outdoors and find joy in winter? Main Street Vermilion’s Ice A Fair returns on Saturday, February 5th throughout walkable

downtown Vermilion. “We’re excited to bring this event back to Vermilion with the support of Shores and Islands Ohio and our business community,” said organizer Jeanette Schaefer. “We’re inviting everyone to join us for winter fun in our summertime town.” Celebrating its 13th year, Ice A Fair kicks off at 11AM and features 50 ice sculptures created by Elegant Ice Creations (Brecksville), narrated trolley tours of Vermilion’s historic district, shopping, dining, ice craving demonstrations and more. “This year, through a generous grant from the Erie County Community Foundation, we have a Frozen Play Space for the kids,” said Schaefer. The space features an 8’ sculpture of a dragon, an ice slide and a corn hole game. Stop by the Main Street Welcome Tent at Exchange Park in the middle of town and check out a collection of themed raffle baskets and items like Indians tickets, 6 months of car washes from Liberty Auto Wash and chances to win $1000 in Cold Hard Cash, ten $100 bills frozen in a block of ice. When the sun goes down, the sky lights up at 6PM with Fire and Ice in the center of downtown. A giant, skillfully carved chimney of ice stands in the center of downtown. Will the fire that burns inside topple the ice or will the melting ice douse the flames? Enjoy the suspense, beauty, and spectacular fire dancing performance all set to music for this traditional final to the day’s events you won’t want to miss. “We like to say, ‘you’ll be chillin’ in Vermilion’ at Ice a Fair,” said Schaefer, “with just the right amount of snow and a little sunshine.” Complete information and schedules can be found at mainstreetvermilion.org or follow Main Street Vermilion on Facebook or Instagram for updates as well. Wisconsin Dells Winter Mode

Consider the reverse snow globe experiences at the indoor waterparks, outdoor hot springs, cozy supper clubs, snow tubing and snowboarding, and cozy cabins. If you need a nudge to step outside during the winter months, we bring you the ultimate Wisconsin Dells winter checklist: Tan at an indoor waterpark. Yes, you read that right, you can tan in the middle of winter when you stay and play at the Wilderness Resort, where a massive see-through dome covers their indoor wave pool for a feeling of the tropics. Or visit one of the numerous other indoor waterparks in the area where it’s always 84 degrees. Swim outside with snow falling all around. There may not be natural hot springs in Wisconsin, but the next best thing is outdoor pools and hot soaks that are heated year-round. At Sundara Inn & Spa, take a dip in the infinity pool, steam rising, snow falling, the scent of fresh pine setting the perfect winter hot springs scene. At Chula Vista Resort, patrons of their Spa Del Sol can relax poolside, where heated waters and outdoor fireplace bring warmth to any winter day. Barrel down a snow tube chute. This is a version of old-fashioned sledding, just amped up. The added benefit, no experience needed; just hop in your tube and enjoy the ride. At Cascade Mountain, woosh down the 900-foot long chutes, then ride the “magic carpet” lift back to the top. Christmas Mountain is another terrific spot for snow tubing, with snow-covered chutes delivering heart-racing speeds. If skiing or snowboarding is more your thing, both locations offer great runs for those too. Go the silent sports route with snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Outdoor recreation continues to be a big draw for travelers to Wisconsin, even as temperatures -66- | EXTENDEDWEEKENDGETAWAYS.COM ~ February, 2022

drop. Silent sports, including snowshoeing, winter hiking, and cross-country skiing provide a breath of fresh air, inspiring scenery, and a good cardio workout. There are four state parks nearby– Devil’s Lake, Mirror Lake, Rocky Arbor, and Roche-A-Cri – and each has a mix of silent sport options. Added tip: Warm up after with a specialty espresso drink and made-from-scratch waffles at Bella Goose Café, a pretty little bistro perched above the Wisconsin River. Try unexpected Wisconsin Dells attractions in the winter. We’re talking ziplining and animal experiences with this entry. Vertical Illusions has a snowshoe zip line eco-experience, while Bigfoot Zipline Tours takes you over red pines resplendent against a backdrop of sparkly white snow. At Timbavati Wildlife Park, you can reserve a behind-the-scenes VIP tour and instantly feel continents away. Or go horseback riding at Woodside Ranch Riding Stables or Red Ridge Ranch Riding Stables. Don’t forget that Wisconsin classic, bowling. Go oldschool when you bowl a few games at Chalet Lanes & Lounge or try cosmic bowling at Knuckleheads Trampoline Park Rides Bowling or Tom Foolerys. For grown-ups, another activity to consider is axe throwing – we kid you not! The coaches at Asgard Axe Throwing will teach you different techniques, games, and safety. Give it a try. Stroll the Scenic River Walk for a snowy view of the Wisconsin River. Every season brings its own spectacular views of the river, but we’re partial to the wintry view, unobstructed by foliage, shining bright for all to see. Pick up the entrance to the River Walk right downtown.

Weekend Getaway Wit

If you are considering a weekend getaway, consider heading to historic Berkeley Springs, WV. Located less than a two-hour drive from DC and Baltimore, it is an easy weekend getaway for many. Known as America’s first spa, Berkeley Springs is a mountain town that combines the spa atmosphere with tidbits of history and a presidential connection, making the town unique.

The History

Long before our country had a president, people were visiting the small town of Bath, Virginia, to enjoy soaking in the mineral waters. The waters were thought to provide healing and therapeutic effects. George Washington first visited and soaked in the water when working as a surveyor for Lord Fairfax. He was just 16 at the time. Soaking areas were holes dug in the sand, lined with rocks, and the fresh mineral spring water flowed through each of the “tubs.” George was enamored by the experience and eventually purchased ground and helped build America’s first spa in 1776. George visited and brought his family and friends to enjoy the mineral springs even after becoming president. A bathhouse built in 1784 was rustic but a better alternative than the holes in the ground. When the postal service set up a mail delivery station in 1801,

the town’s name was changed to Berkeley Springs. After the Civil War, Virginia split into two states, and Berkeley Springs was in West Virginia. In 1815, the original bathhouse was replaced and still stands today. It has been renovated, but visitors can still enjoy a Roman Bath.

Things To Do In Berkeley Springs

There are various things to enjoy including sightseeing, antique shopping, outdoor activities, and festivals in Berkeley Springs. It is a great place to enjoy a romantic

weekend or celebrate President’s Day. Let’s look at some of the things to do and see.

Berkeley Springs State Park

The smallest state park in West Virginia, Berkeley Springs State Park, is in the middle of the town and is only one block in size. There are two bathhouses, a variety of springs, George Washington’s bathtub, a gazebo, swimming pool, public drinking spring, museum, and a few other structures within the park. The mineral springs constantly flow at 74°F at a rate of

Visit the Spas

When visiting America’s First Spa, make time to enjoy the therapeutic effects of the mineral waters either in a Roman or whirlpool bath. Berkeley Springs State Park has two bathhouse facilities operated by the state and are a part of the park. The historic Roman Bathhouse has nine private rooms with walk-in tubs, each holding 750 gallons of water. The second bathhouse is a full-service spa offering saunas Roman and whirlpool baths, massages, and other services. We enjoyed a Roman Bath in the historic bathhouse when we ar-

rived, and it was a great way to relax and start the weekend. Next door to the State Park is the Renaissance Spa at the Country Inn of Berkeley Springs. We enjoyed not only the whirlpool bath but a couples massage at the Renaissance Spa on our second day in Berkeley Springs. The Atasia Spa is just one block from the park. It is a full-service spa with a eucalyptus steam room and whirlpool baths that include Berkeley Springs’ therapeutic waters. What could be more romantic than a long soak in the warm mineral water and then a couple’s massage?

George Washington’s Bathtub

The famed outdoor monument to presidential bathing, George Washington’s Bathtub, is located within the State Park. It is not the exact tub used by George, but a replica of the one he used. The Old Bathhouse stands where George’s actual tub was located. A sign identifies George’s tub. The so-called bathtub is a hole in the ground about two feet wide and five or six feet long and lined with stones. Please turn to next page... February, 2022 ~ EXTENDEDWEEKENDGETAWAYS.COM | -75-

Berkeley Springs - Continued The Museum Of the Berkeley Springs

The Museum of the Berkeley Springs was built in 1815 and is above the Roman Bath House within the Berkeley Springs State Park. It is the oldest public building in the town. The museum is free and has activities, exhibits, and publications highlighting the story of the famous mineral springs and the town.

Antique Shops in Berkeley Springs

The spring water inside the tub is about a foot deep and 74 degrees year-round. I doubt sitting in it was very comfortable, but legend has it that many people came to the springs for the therapeutic effects. The Smithsonian Magazine ranked the tub as one of the world’s six most breathtaking baths in 2016.

Antique shops and unique stores line the streets of Berkeley Springs. Many people visit to shop. You might find the perfect treasure in the stores. Old Time STAR Movie Theatre The STAR Theatre shows a first-run movie on the weekends at 8 pm. A true historic, momand-pop theater, they offer hot-oil

Lord Fairfax’s Spring

Lord Fairfax sent George Washington to survey the area. The largest spring in the park bears his name. There are several running springs, and during summer months, visitors dangle their feet and wade through the waters.

popcorn with real butter. Even the prices are nostalgic.

Walking Tours

Take a stroll around the town with a self-guided tour. Focus on the State Park and its history with the Treasure Tour of Berkeley Springs State Park, or take the Walking Tour of Berkeley Springs for a walk all over town to all unique places of interest and the historical spots. Public Drinking Spring Don’t go home empty-handed. Bring or purchase a jug at the Bathhouse and fill it with the special mineral water at the public drinking spring. The free public tap is located under the Gentlemen’s Spring Building. Several people stopped by to fill gallon jugs when we visited, and one man pulled a wagon full of five-gallon jugs to fill.

Yearly Celebration

America’s first spa town showcases the nation’s one and only

tial bathing with George Washington’s Bathtub Celebration on the weekend nearest March 18. The weekend event is devoted to live theater, local history, and dollar sales.

Where To Stay In Berkeley Springs

When George Washington visited the area, he complained there were no good places to spend the night. Well, that has changed. There are several places to stay, and here are a few of our favorites. The Country Inn of Berkeley Springs If you are visiting the State Park or any of the spas, this is the perfect place to stay. It is right next door to the Berkeley Springs State Park in the center of town, and everything is walkable. The Country Inn of Berkeley Springs is a hotel rich in history with a touch of elegance. The historic inn offers rooms and suites with a touch of charm. Our suite had a separate sitting area, a king-size bed, and a large bath with a stand-up shower and a separate tub. The West Inn provides modern accommodations in their spacious rooms. There are restaurants and a spa on-site. During the summer and early fal, you can enjoy the English Country Gardens and the twinkling lights during the evening. Cacapon State Park Resort A lodge and rustic cabins are available at the Cacapon State Park Resort. Hiking, water activities, golfing, plus horseback riding are available.

Highlawn Inn A beautiful restored Victorian B&B offers ten rooms plus a carriage house, each with delicious gourmet breakfasts. The Highlawn Inn offers specials that include spa discounts. Be sure to check their website. Whether you come to Berkeley Springs, WV, for a romantic weekend getaway, take in the waters, or explore the historic town, you will understand why readers voted it as one of USA Today’s

Top 10 Best Small Historic Towns in 2020. Come and see America’s First Spa that George Washington helped create for yourself. Miles of beautiful mountains, valleys, and rivers, you will find it’s a place to get away from it all and relax.
