SO many places to choose from, specials galore...

Up Close: From the Editor “Pack up the pooches and load the van. We need to leave by eight! There’s so much to bring. Do we have everything? Come on, we can’t be late! ...“ The classic Thanksgiving song has gotten a fresh new twist by author, Linda Ashman. Let’s face it. There aren’t that many families anymore who load a sleigh for a long winter’s drive “over the river and through the woods.” It’s more like a quick jaunt over the hills and through the clouds on a plane because our schedules are so busy. And we can’t get away too far from the shopping malls and department stores for the big Black Friday that comes right afterward. Many are opting to gather at a nearby restaurant to let someone else do the cooking. Clean up time must be eliminated so

there’s more time to plan for the shopping trip. Every year, around this time, there’s a sudden shift in moods. Halloween decorations and candy have already disappeared and given way to Christmas displays. Shoppers are already humming Christmas carols as they shop for earlybird gift specials or make mental lists for a return on Black Friday. Rehearsals for programs are quickly filling the calendar and the annual sorting of tree ornaments and lights have begun. However, any advice offered to relieve stress at this time of year usually includes an order to take some time off for yourself. It’s the one thing many of us do not include in our agenda. So along with our first Holiday Gift Guide, comes several ideas for places to get away for

that much needed weekend of pampering. If going with girlfriends, see page 14 for a new twist on Bing, Watch, and Chill. Also, there’s a fun game in our gift guide (see page 19) to take along called “3 Jewels.” Guys, we haven’t left you out of this issue. While the girls are shopping, how about a hunting getaway in Coshocton? See page 30. Got kids? They probably need a break, too. Throughout, there are so many activities where Santa will be makiing early sneek-peek appearances. If the classic “over the River” is your destination, see page 28 for options of cruising right down the Mississippi River! There is just so much we gotta see and gotta do. So I “gotta” go get busy ... Until next month...

Places to Go

Capon Springs Hampshire County settlers and Native Americans didn’t gather to celebrate with a feast. Instead they opposed one another during the French and Indian War. It was only after that war ended in 1763, that settlers arrived in any numbers in the county. In 1765 when a man named Henry Frye was hunting bear and he came upon the spring. He came to believe that the spring, which was then called Frye Springs, had cured his sickly wife. There is a Native Americans connection here as the Native Americans had long used this area as hunting grounds and knew of the spring’s healing power. Today’s name, Capon Springs, is derived from the Shawnee word “cape-capepe-hon” meaning “medicinal water.” Hampshire County, then Virginia, was considered the Wild West then. In the early 1800s the spa resort became popular. People wanted to get out of the city and enjoy mountain air. 1849 when a Baltimore compa-

ny, Ricard, Buck, and Blakemore, built a hotel, Mountain House, calling it the largest spa hotel in the country. It was dedicated the following year by Daniel Webster who announced his candidacy for the presidency at the event. The resort struggled mainly due to its remote location. Then came the Civil War and Hampshire County

including Capon Springs became part of West Virginia in 1863. During the war the resort was shut down. The spring passed through several hands after the war. At one time, there was even a physician in residence who would meet with guests discover their ailments and then write a prescription for Capon Springs water. In 1911, Moun-

down the drain and he went into receivership. Louis L. Austin was next to acquire the spring in 1932. He and his wife Virginia tried unsuccessfully to continue the production of the bottled water. The resort did take off and is still in his family corporation today. A visit to Capon Springs and Farms Resort is a cross between going to camp and stepping back in time to a more leisurely era. Of course, that medicinal water is still there. It flows through every faucet in the resort and fills the 65 degree pool. However, there is so much more here to enjoy. That’s why so many visitors return year after year. I arrived on a press trip escorted by Jonathan Bellingham, one of Louis Austin’s grandsons and a third generation family owner at Capon Springs and Farms. After traversing a winding back road not all of which was paved, we arrived at the scenic mountain retreat filled with delicious smells. We were just in time to experience the traditional dinner served three times a week at Sunset Lodge overlooking the golf course. Did tain House burned. I mention those scenic mountains In 1917, Capon Springs experiin the background at sunset? We enced a small revival. Will Atkinall know food smells best when son, bought the resort and began cooked outdoors but nothing riselling bottled Capon Spring vals this giant cookout. Steak and water. He built a bottling plant pork on a giant grill combined in a portion of the bath house with home-style veggies like lima and distributors throughout the beans, real tomatoes and comcountry marketed the product. bined with homemade mac and Atkinson’s grandiose scheme went cheese.

The Dunlap Brothers created a timeless mood with their Bluegrass fiddles, mandolins and guitars and “took me back to the place where I belong, West Virginia, Mountain Mamma.” Maybe that’s the magic of this place, once there you feel like it is where you belong. You take as much or little of each food as you wish and wander back to a communal table under the softly lighted pavilion. If it’s chilly, you can pick a spot near the blazing fireplace. Everyone stands at attention for the daily flag raising and lowering ceremonies. The rooms are basic but comfortable. Who needs TV when you have a gorgeous view just out your door? Have trouble sleeping, just open you back door and listen to the babbling brook. Your phone won’t work here. That means that nuisance telemarketer can’t call you. Internet? Who needs Facebook when you can sit on your front porch and chat with a new found friend? If you really experience internet withdrawal symptoms, you can pick it up (somewhat) over in the meeting room. It’s a lot more relaxing to visit the Hygeia Bath House and Spa. We enjoyed a bath soak in the special healing waters and the spa offers a host of other body treatments. First order of the day was Polar Bear Dip in the spring fed pool. WOW! What a way to wake up. That 65 degree water works like a energy drink.

Capon Springs _Cont.

Next after a hearty communal breakfast in the dining room of the main house, we went out exploring. Golf is a big favorite there. I’m not much of a fan but the new rage, Fling Golf, was fun. They feature Hickory Golf using traditional wood shafts and have a regulation 9-hole golf course and a par-3 course here as well as lessons from the local pro, Mike Rogers. Mike is patient with golf newbies like me who ask silly questions. We got to ride back to our rooms in the electric golf carts and hijacked it to do a little more touring. Our patient driver, Chris, tasked with returning the cart after we got to our rooms just hung on back and let us roam. We passed a Disk Golf course, played with Frisbees and discovered the Cabin. It’s an authentic log cabin that was originally the home of a night watchman for the Mountain House. Lou Austin had it renovated to use for storage. Then in the early 1980s, it was restored and a bath room added to use as a guest cabin. We went in and discovered a virtual museum of early mountain life. Another fun discovery was the Ping Pong House set up with two tables. There are also horseshoes, croquet, tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, -12- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ November 2017

shuffleboard, cornhole, and pickleball. Not being a sports writer, I’m not even sure what the last two are. There’s a neat fishing lake onsite with a pretty white gazebo and a kids playground. The meeting room offers a cozy fireplace and lots of games and comfortable sofas and easy chairs for relaxing. There’s a library upstairs. Notice there is a “Farms” in the resort name. Part of that revolves abound Farmer Sam Brill. Sam is a fourth generation family member. Among other sustainable farm productions he raises 66 longhaired and long-horned Scottish Cattle. We didn’t make it to see the cattle but we did get to Hog Heaven to meet his pigs. The fact that the pigs have names impressed me. One, Randy, couldn’t get enough petting from Farmer Sam. He tries to let them enjoy their lives here until they have to go to the other Hog Heaven. Hard to believe but when you are at Capon Springs and Farms Resort, you are only 2 ½ hours from D.C. and a hundred years back in time.

Food Fun

By Kandy Derden, Places to Go Editor I tried this last year at a carry-in luncheon and it instantly became my new favorite pumpkin dessert. The pairing of a creamy texture like pie topped with a crunchier layer from the cake makes this a perfect combination.

During the month of November, our thoughts turn to all things pumpkin. It is easy to find fresh pumpkins, pumpkin pie, pumpkin pie ingredients, pumpkin carving kits, pumpkin decorations in the form of fabric, glassware and candles, pumpkin seed granola, pumpkin spice creamer, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin cereal, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin latte, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, and pumpkin cake. That just begins to scratch the surface of possibilities. For more options, visit your local grocer which will have an abundance of . . . well, pumpkin everything. Some people are totally unimpressed by such seasonal delights, but for those of you who look forward to autumn especially for all the culinary specialties, it might be difficult to decide which pumpkin treat you want. I’m guessing that was the case with this recipe. Is it a pie or is it a cake? Square or round? Cake or pie? Hmm, tough call. That is, until now. Enjoy them both with a Pumpkin Pie Cake.

PUMPKIN PIE CAKE 1 can easy pumpkin pie mix 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 box French vanilla pudding mix 1 cup evaporated milk 4 eggs 1 cake mix (white or yellow) 1 stick butter Cool Whip Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine pumpkin, sugars, pudding mix, milk and eggs. Pour into a greased 9 X 13 inch pan. Pour cake mix into a separate bowl. Use a pastry blender or two table knives to cut butter into mix until coarse crumbs. Sprinkle this on top of pumpkin mixture in pan. Bake for 50-60 minutes. Cool. Top with Cool Whip. So as we approach the time of year when we focus on all manner of pumpkin, keep the needed ingredients on hand. Impress your friends and family with this easy, yummy, seasonal pumpkin creation. Better yet, make it for a potluck dinner or the family Thanksgiving gathering. Just be sure to let me know where and when so I won’t miss out. November, 2017~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -13-

Things to Do: Hunters across the United States are recognizing Coshocton County as the place for game. It’s often ranked as the top county in Ohio for deer kills and it’s open season year-round for a variety of prey. Today, man still has an incentive to hunt that dates back over two million years – for food. “In my family, we don’t kill it unless we are going to eat it,” said Scott Hosier, an avid hunter and fisherman. Some hunters donate the extra meat that they hunt to area food banks and pantries. Hunters in the county have donated as much as 20,000 pounds of venison (deer meat) per year to feed the hungry, explained Dewey Thompson, Coshocton Chapter Coordinator for Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry. Deer damage to property within Coshocton city limits was so problematic, a committee was formed to resolve it. Thompson, an avid hunter, helped lead the effort. Together, the committee convinced the city council to lift a ban on bow hunting. Soon bow hunters donated more than 500 pounds of meat to the local Salvation Army. Thompson learned about the Farmers & Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) mission and got involved. This mission enables hunters to feed the hungry when more deer and other big game are harvested beyond their use. Before long, Thompson was ap-

proached by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. They needed help culling the burgeoning deer population which was wreaking havoc on area farmlands and elsewhere. The Coshocton FHFH supplied 12,000 pounds of drop tagged deer to participating butchers that year for donations to the hungry. Before deer bag limits were dropped, Coshocton’s FHFH chapter was donating upward of 20,000 pounds of meat annually. Coshocton wasn’t always burgeoning with wildlife. “Decades ago, deer weren’t here like they are now,” Thompson said. “At the beginning of the 20th Century, deer were practically gone from these parts. And turkeys were totally gone!” Turkeys were re-introduced to Coshocton County in 1954. In the 1960s, businesses closed for the first day of squirrel and rabbit season. Thompson was seven years old when he learned how to hunt squirrel with his dad in Coshocton County. He used a 22 rifle. But when Thompson’s kids turned seven, they were hunting deer and turkey. One of the reasons why hunting went from famine to feast in Coshocton County is because of the repurposing of land. Old farms and mining properties have had nature reclaim them. Strip-mined land reclamation projects have transformed the terrain into extensive grassy brush lands. After plenty of brush, woods and water

-30- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ November 2017

sources took hold, bigger game returned to the area. The terrain in places can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the hunters. Past surface mining has left a rugged landscape so access can be a little more difficult. Serious hunters love this because they know that they can get deeper back and away from others who may be deterred by it. A unique combination of the landscape and Electric Powered All Purpose Vehicles (EPAPV) allows disabled hunters to obtain access to places where just several years ago they would not have thought possible. A permit is required and there are periodically organized hunts where others help out the disabled hunting parties. First, you need to scout the area before the season starts. Scouting is a huge part of the process. You need to track where the deer are eating, drinking and sleeping by following their signs through the woods. Next, you’ll need gear. This includes things like a tree stand and climbers to get up a tree until you find a clear shot range. “But the work really starts after you kill something,” Hosier said. “No doubt the deer will run 200 yards in the opposite direction of your truck.” You need to find the deer, field dress it and haul it to the truck. After you tag game, you can

y; Aim; Coshocton! By Rocco Satullo

now check it by phone instead of a check station. This allows you to “bone it” on the spot and load game bags. Keep in mind, you not only have to drag the deer back but you need to haul all of your gear with you, too. If it’s dark, you can easily become disoriented and have trouble knowing where to go. Once you leave the woods, you still have work to do. If you don’t go to a meat processor, you’ll have to skin and butcher the deer yourself. Then, you pack the freezer! Hosier learned to hunt pheas-

ant and rabbit from his dad and grandpa when he was a kid. He used a double barreled shotgun side-by-side 20 gauge when he was about nine years old. It was his grandpa’s gun. “One of my sons got his first deer when he was seven years old using a 20 gauge shotgun,” Hosier said. “When he was nine years old, he got his first deer using a crossbow. But I’ll never forget his first turkey. I called it in but my son accidentally wiggled his fingers. These birds see everything!

The turkey took a wide path around. Twenty or thirty yards is an ideal distance but this one went a good forty yards away and stopped. I used the turkey call again. When it looked around a tree, my son got it! Forty yards out at eight years old and he got it! I didn’t even warn him that we use three-inch shells for turkey hunting. It’s a bigger load than the shotgun shells he was used to using at that time.” Another reason that Coshocton County has become a destination

November, 2017~ WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM | -31-

for hunters near and far is the vast public lands made available through the years. “Handshake permissions on private properties aren’t what they used to be 10 or so years ago,” Thompson explained. What’s left of the private lands has largely become a pay to play arrangement. Prime properties are leased by out of state hunters who primarily hunt for themselves. It’s rumored that a famous racecar driver bought 5,000 acres here just to use during deer season. Hunting property has become a competitive business. “I used to pay a land owner with a block of cheese but those days are gone,” Thompson laughed. Nowadays a lease may cost about $50 per acre so if you want to lease 100 acres, that’s $5,000 for one year or in a lot of cases, just one week in the fall for deer gun season. There’s even a web site, HuntDeerInOhio.com, offering to sublease acres for hunting. In addition, there are serious consequences for trespassing and poaching. Ohio has a hotline to turn in a poacher. Simply call 1-800-POACHER. What used to be a $50 fine is now up to $1,000 plus three days in jail. So hunters don’t even want to risk it with laws with such teeth. As a result, outfitter groups have sprung up to specialize in recreational hunting. So, you can lease property, seek an outfitter for a guided hunt or explore the large sects of public lands. Elsaan Outfitting is becoming one of Ohio’s premier upland gamebird hunting preserves offering sportsmen of all ages an ultimate experience in hunting upland game, as well as sporting clays. “The opportunities to hunt public land is spectacular in this area,”

Thompson said. “I’d say that east of the Mississippi, this is as good as it gets.” There is an abundance of public lands to hunt in Coshocton County totaling approximately 40,000 acres. These include Woodbury Wildlife Area, Muskingum Watershed Conservation District (Wills Creek and Mohawk Damn areas), American Electric Power Conesville Coal lands, and some smaller Division of Wildlife lands (Simco Wildlife Area and Mohican River Wildlife Area). Print and carry hunting permits are available online at wildlife. ohiodnr.gov. “Coshocton County is great for deer hunting because of the amount of public land,” said James “Andy” Hershner, Wildlife Area Supervisor at Woodbury Wildlife Area, managed by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. “You simply don’t have to worry about knocking on doors to get great hunting opportunities here.” Hershner oversees the management of Woodbury Wildlife Area plus Tri-Valley Wildlife Area, Dillon State Park, Powelson Wildlife Area and other public lands. Woodbury Wildlife Area grew considerably to nearly 20,000 acres with the purchase of land formerly owned by the Peabody Coal Company. There is a diverse mixture of habitats at Woodbury Wildlife Area. It ranges from expanses of legumes and grasses to virtually undisturbed woodlands. The area is made up of 35% open land, 8% brush land, and 57% woodlands. In addition, you’ll find 42

-32- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ November 2017

wetlands and 116 ponds. Wildlife includes whitetail deer, wild turkey, squirrel, cottontail rabbits, and managed dove fields. Waterfowl and small game are mostly hunted by local hunters. Deer and turkey attract many non-resident hunters. There has been a significant increase in non-Ohio resident hunters in the past 5-10 years for whitetail deer due to the number

concentrated in this area. Culling the herds is needed to prevent overpopulation. This provides for healthier deer remaining and a healthier habitat all around. “Coshocton County has been listed as having the leading population of deer in the state and is consistently ranked in the top-3 counties for deer kills annually,” Hershner said. There is hunting for all seasons here. Archery hunting has grown a lot due to the longer season which

allows more selectivity. “You get to hunt the rut (breeding season) when bucks get a little careless and make themselves more visible,” explained Hershner. Deer archery season runs from the end of September through the beginning of February. Deer gun season is from the Monday after Thanksgiving to the following

Sunday. Muzzle-loading season spans several days in early January. It is a primitive weapons season so firearms must be loaded from the muzzle as was typical of early settlers when they hunted for deer. Squirrel season is from early September to the end of January. Rabbit season runs from early November until the end of February. Spring turkey season (Gobblers/ males-only) spans the end of April to Mid-May. Fall season is for either sex and runs from early Octo-

ber until the end of November. Woodbury Wildlife Area also has a Class-A shooting range. This public shooting range allows hunters to site-in their firearms. It is staffed and requires a permit to use it. There are approximately 50 shooting benches. The ranges are 25, 50, 100 and 200 yards. Trap and skeet shooting is available for shotgun hunters. There is also an archery course. Maps of the Woodbury Wildlife Area are available at wildlife. ohiodnr.gov/woodbury. There are a variety of lodging accommodations in Coshocton County. These feature hunting cabins, lodges, hotels, bed and breakfasts, and campgrounds. Some are for hunter’s-only. Campgrounds provide primitive sites for hunters-only and require a hunting license to stay there from the second Friday in October through the second Sunday after Thanksgiving. Hershner started hunting with his dad when he was about eight years old. He began using firearms after he turned ten years old. There is an apprenticeship program that allows minors to hunt with a licensed adult hunter. The apprenticeship license lasts up to three years. Then they have to pass the hunter safety course. Hunters must pass a hunter safety course. “Being licensed is part of what you need. You should also have a knowledge of the animal you are pursuing and the effort needed to pursue it.” Hershner said. He also emphasizes further safe-

ty by becoming familiar with laws and regulations and knowing how to handle the firearm or weapon you use. “Hunting teaches patience and discipline,” Hershner said. “It certainly teaches ethics because there is typically not someone watching over your shoulder to do the right thing.” “It is enjoyable to watch the natural world come alive in the morning and shut down at the end of the day,” smiled Hershner. “Hunting is my escape. Eighty percent of hunting is by myself. It’s nice just to take time out to go your own pace and absorb something.” One of the most important things to prepare for hunting is to make sure you are adequately equipped and clothed. You need to be prepared to stay outside in different weather and environments long enough for something to happen. “The three biggest things that’ll work against you is to be cold, wet and hungry,” warned Hershner. Hunters don’t have to worry about getting basic supplies and ammunition in the Coshocton area. Most hardware stores in the area carry shotgun shells. In Coshocton, there’s Woodbury Outfitters which is a local retail store that will meet your hunting needs. One thing you can’t buy is good luck. Sometimes hunters feel a touch of humility when they tell their stories about the one that got away. “Whenever I part with my kids in the woods, it’s my tradition to say, ‘Good luck, shoot a buck. Oh no, not a doe,’” concluded Hosier. That said, Coshocton County, Ohio abounds with good luck for hunters. After all, there are plenty of bucks – and other game – to go around.

People to See:

Comedian Tom Green LAS VEGAS – Multi-talented comedian, actor and television host Tom Green will bring his unique brand of onstage hilarity to Las Vegas with “The Tom Green Show” opening in the Back Room at Bally’s in Las Vegas. Tickets are now on sale. Tom is well-known as the hilarious TV talk-show trickster, “anything goes” film actor, and interactive internet pioneer, but his roots as a thoroughly unique stand-up comedian run wild and deep. In the past few years, the innovative, willfully off-the-wall performer has reinvented and reinvigorated himself with live comedy gigs across the globe as the lunatic sage of the digital era. Now, he brings his show to Las Vegas, where he will incorporate video, music and special guests. Let the party begin! Sharp, funny, and provocative in concert, Tom reels off a stream of hilarious insights about the ways technology has changed us all since the turn of the century -- a wealth of observational humor that could never have existed before the rise of computers, the web and social media. With his cynical, finely-tuned rants about the etiquette and evolutionary dangers of texting, the pitfalls of Facebook, the death of privacy and the slippery slope of digital camera convenience, Tom picks up the satirical, profane torch once borne by Bill Hicks and updates the cynically nutty view of society that fueled George Carlin’s classic routines. The subjects can be raw -- drugs, suicide, war and pornography -- and they can be topical -- the economy, politics, and the strange ascent of his former employer on TV’s “The Celebrity Apprentice,” Donald Trump. Tom also deals with the pitfalls of celebrity, a

topic he knows all too well, as well as his battle with cancer and the reality of being in his mid-40s without having had children. He finds the laughs in all of the above.

If Tom’s occasional explosions of righteous anger recall the howl of Sam Kinison, they are leavened by his sometimes wistful recollections of a simpler time when he was growing up suburban in the last days of the Cold War. As frenetic as Tom can get, his genial, impish side continues to pop in and out during his set, insuring that the crowd is on his side. And, of course, he delights in occasional, absurd interaction with his audience. As Tom has honed his material on national and international tours of theaters and comedy clubs, his fans have come to see someone who has gone beyond his movie roles and video persona while still staying true to the hilarity and anarchy that first brought him fame. And those fans have been right in tune with their trailblazing hero as he wins new admirers with his wit, energy and range. The show is produced by UD Factory in conjunction with Tadross Media Group, who are also jointly producing another show in the Back Room at Bally’s Las Vegas, The Miss Behave Gameshow, performing Wednesday through Sunday at 8 p.m. “The Tom Green Show” performs Sunday through Wednesday at 10 p.m. beginning Sunday, Oct. 29, with an additional midnight show on Sundays. Tickets are $39, $59 and $79, with a meet-and-greet package available for $99, plus applicable tax and fees, and go on sale Saturday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. PST. In Burban

BURBANK - Warner Bros. was born from a gamble. A gamble four ambitious brothers made with the world that audiences would gravitate to the talkies motion pictures that synced speech with sound. As with most landmark innovations, early attempts proved wildly unsuccessful. But on October 6th 1927, Warner Bros. released The Jazz Singer and changed entertainment forever. The Brothers Warner, Albert, Sam, Jack and Harry often risked everything they had for what they believed in. It’s a trait that Cass Warner Sperling, Harry Warner’s granddaughter, feels is responsible for all success the studio has enjoyed since that historic premiere. They were pioneers. They were big risk takers and innovators and many times gambled everything on their goals and dreams. On Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, guests will journey up close and personal to the sets and -40- | WEEKENDEREXTENDED.COM ~ November 2017

soundstages where that pioneering spirit lives on. From Casablanca to The Music Man, Friends to ER, Ellen to Conan, guests will see what happens behind the camera of a working entertainment studio. The tours focus on how production happens and that will inspire people to not only understand what goes on in the making of a film, but to experiment themselves. Most people have no clue what is involved. But the tour can be a tool for people to learn and really express themselves. To learn more about Harry Warner and the studio’s founding family, upgrade now to our Deluxe Tour where you can enjoy an exclusive luncheon with Cass Warner Sperling in the official Warner Bros. commissary, the restaurant where actors, directors and producers discuss present and future projects. Studio Tours depart at set times from 8:15am to 4:00pm (subject to change) (Closed Christmas Day)

ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME EXHIBIT Comes To Museum GRAND RAPIDS – The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum and Foundation will be bringing a glimpse of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to the Ford Presidential Museum this November with an exhibit that explores how rock music can change attitudes about patriotism, peace, equality and freedom. “Louder Than Words: Rock, Power and Politics” opens to the public during a Ford After Five evening event, November 7 and runs through February 11. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Newseum in Washington, D.C., partnered to create this one-of-kind exhibit. The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum’s presentation of “Louder Than Words: Rock, Power and Politics,” marks its first stop outside of the two iconic partnering museums. The exhibit first premiered on May 20, 2017, at the Rock Hall and was on display at the Newseum during the 2017 presidential inauguration through July 31. Video, multimedia, photographs, periodicals and artifacts, such as Bono’s 2002 Super Bowl jacket will be displayed. Performing at the Super Bowl in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, U2 paid tribute to the victims by projecting their names on a massive backdrop as it played “Where the Streets Have No Name.” Bono wore the jacket during the performance; the jacket’s stars-and-stripes lining serves as an additional homage to the victims.

“‘Louder Than Words’ highlights how artists have used their craft as a platform to express their views and shape public opinion,” said Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The exhibit explores how artists exercise their First Amendment rights, challenge assumptions and beliefs, stimulate thought and effect change. Beyond music’s influence on the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and gender equality, the exhibit also features other significant moments and figures. “We are honored to have the opportunity to partner with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to bring this exhibition to the region,” said Elaine Didier, director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum. From ex-Beatle George Harrison’s visit to the White House, to stories of Steve Ford playing Led Zeppelin music from the White House roof, rock music had a definite history during the Ford presidency. The November 7, opening event begins at 6 p.m. Membership to the Friends of Ford is available online at geraldrfordfoundation.org/donate, or by calling 616-2540396. This exhibit will be included as part of the Museum’s regular admission fees.
