EDITOR’S DE SK   BY: SHARON E. LOCKLEAR, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

For the whole law can be summed up in the one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” “I don’t know my neighbor or neighbors and haven’t know them for years.” “Good fences make good neighbors.” “I don’t have anything to do with any of the people who live around here.” There are forty-eight Bible verses about neighbors. Neighbors are significant and necessary to our Christian salvation. We are not going to get very far without honoring, respecting and loving our neighbors. Often, we want to define neighbor as the people in our neighborhood; however, that is a literal interpretation and must be expanded for our spiritual growth. Neighbor is anyone who is around us wherever we may be at any time. A neighbor is the coworker that you do not particularly care for, the ex-spouse that works your last nerve, the sister at church with the big hat and tight suit, the homeless person that always gets you when you leave Starbucks with your hot tea. How do you love those people? It might not be easy if we are trying to love them without the love of Christ Jesus in us. The second commandment and Galatians 5:14 command us to love our neighbors as ourselves. I believe we can love our

neighbors as we love ourselves when we genuinely love ourselves as GOD loves us. I believe we don’t love our neighbors because we see too much of ourselves in our neighbors. We see our failures, shortcomings, mishaps, our woulds-shoulds-coulds-didn’ts and that is why we can often be SO CRITICAL of others. We see ourselves in them and engage in condemning them, because it is easier to heap condemnation on another than to stand in front of the mirror and admit that we fell short. And for some, it makes us feel better – temporarily. To begin selflessly loving ourselves, we must accept ourselves unconditionally where we are, with shortcomings and our baggage. At that point, we must begin to love ourselves as Jesus loves us. Jesus loves us despite our imperfections, challenges, disobedience, limitations, faults, pain and all the garbage that is in us and around us. Christians can be some of the messiest people and Jesus loves us. That is the love that we must have for ourselves and our neighbors. Love and accept ourselves, love and accept our neighbors as Jesus loves and accepts us. Sharon E. skills, learning from the very best. After two decades of pouring into other artists, the worshipper, vocalist, songwriter, musician, producer, arranger and engineer is now realizing her own dreams with the release of her brand new single, “Count It As Done”. A mellow ballad that opens with sparse instrumentation, suddenly soaring to inspiring, orchestral heights, “Count It As Done”, was penned by Williams after coming to her in two dreams. The song’s message encourages listeners to “speak and believe”, to “take the Lord at His word” and then to “count it as done”. Her captivating soprano vocal and powerful delivery leave the listener wanting more of the pop-flavored, Gospel-inspired track. With Williams’ involvement

in everything on the track – including playing, engineering and mixing – the song is truly a representation of a musician finally coming into her own. An industry insider, Andrea has been a Gospel radio personality, a workshop clinician, an interviewer of top artists and a writer of hundreds of articles and reviews on Gospel music. She is also the author of Live The Life You Sing About: How To Live With Integrity In The Gospel Music Industry. The new single, “Count It As Done”, will be featured on her forthcoming debut project, The Believe Album, releasing in spring of 2020.

LIVING IN THE SPIRIT WHILE FACING THE CHALLENGE S OF

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE   BY PAOLA TENNON, RN, BSN, MBA/HCA, CCM                                             In the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes, a mother gives counsel to her son regarding facing the challenges and adversities in life. She begins by saying “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stairs” and admonishes her son to continue to move forward despite the difficulties he may encounter. She compared her journey through life as to ascending a staircase and urged him to keep climbing in order to reach the landing; no matter how many corners he turned, or how dark the path or how unsteady the stair. If he was to overcome, he still needed to press on, regardless of the torn-up boards, or the tattered carpet that lined each step, or the exposed tacks and splinters that threaten to rip his flesh. The intent of this article is to offer encouragement to anyone who is faced with the extraordinary health challenges of autoimmune disease. These diseases are complex in nature, hard to diagnosis and difficult to treat. Autoimmune disease is a conglomeration of between 80 to 100 different diseases that can

24 | Summer 2019

be chronic in nature and potentially life threatening according to a variety of researchers including the American Autoimmune Related Disease Association (AARDA) and the National Institute of Health (NIH), just to name a few. It is my hope to petition anyone impacted by one of these diseases and to call them into action to become advocates for their own health. The goal is to offer insight on Autoimmune Diseases as a whole and to help bring awareness to the increasing prevalence worldwide. The second goal is to emphasis the importance of early detection and the significance of getting the appropriate treatment plan which is paramount. The reference scriptures for this article are taken from the book of Galatians chapter 5:5 (KJV), which allows us to look toward a more positive end despite

challenges that one may be facing. “For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith”. And, verse 25 which submits to us that, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” To walk in the spirit refers to our lifestyle which impact every aspect of our being including physical, emotional or mental and spiritual. Thus, it becomes essential that we find balance among all these facets of our life. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI)

defines Autoimmune Disease as an illness that causes the immune system to produce antibodies that attack normal body tissue. The immune system consists of a network of specialized cells, tissues, vessels and organs that work in concert to protect the body from invading organisms and substances. In comparison, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS); Autoimmune Disease result when immune cells identify and targets the body’s own healthy cells, tissues and organs as foreign and launch an attack against the targeted cells compromising the body’s ability to defend itself. When functioning properly, the immune system identifies foreign invaders such as infectious organisms including bacteria, viruses or toxins and launch a counter defense to kill and eliminate any threat. The National Institute of Health (NIH) estimate 23.5 million Americans as being impacted by these diseases; however, only 24 diseases had epidemiological studies that were considered reliable. Furthermore, The American Autoimmune Related Disease Association (AARDA) estimates that approximately 50 million Americans suffer from these diseases. Overall, the number of autoimmune diseases identified by researchers range from 80 to 100. The AARDA further suggest that autoimmunity is now listed as one of the most common disease categories preceded only by cancer and heart disease. This is also recognized by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and there is an agreed

upon opinion among researchers that suggest that this group of diseases are becoming more prevalent for reasons that have not yet been identified. In addition, they are being diagnosed at such a high rate that some medical experts are considering it as an epidemic. Statistics from The National Institute on Health (NIH) found that the annual direct health care cost for autoimmune disease is in the range of $100 billion (source: NIH, National Institute of Allergy and infectious Disease (NIAID). In comparison, the direct annual health care cost for Cancer is $57 billion, while Heart Attack and Stroke costs is $200 billion (source: NIH, AHA). Although, the etiology of Autoimmune Disease remains obscure; research in various areas of medicine and science agree that genetics and environmental factors are the primary influences for the origin of these diseases. Other contributing risk factors that have been identified include diet, obesity, sustained stress and stress related disorders, exposure to environmental toxins and in some cases certain medications. It has been suggested by the AARDA that it can take up to 5 years and as many as 5 doctors before an autoimmune disease can be properly identified. Symptoms are typically vague in the initial phase of the disease; but become more apparent as the disease progresses to the acute phase. This brings about difficulties associated with early diagnoses. Commonalities among symptoms include fatigue, recurring fever, joint pain and swelling, stiffness, muscle aches, swollen glands, and abdominal or digestive issues.

ordinarypeoplemagazine | 25

Pointers you should know about Autoimmune diseases:

1. Auto immune diseases affect a higher number of women than men and tends to run in families. 2. Research indicates that, overall approximately 75-80 percent of autoimmune patients are women. 3. Women are typically of childbearing age. 4. Some autoimmune diseases (AD) have shared genetic structures and as a result, some people have the propensity to develop a second autoimmune disease. 5. These diseases can affect many parts of the body. 6. There are other autoimmune disease such as Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis that can increase the risk of heart disease. 7. Autoimmune Diseases are difficult to definitively identify because they share similar symptoms with other diseases and may be initially misdiagnoses. 8. Treatment varies and is dependent on the type of disease diagnosis.

online. Use only reputable medical websites, local medical resources, know your family medical history, keep a list of your symptoms and share all information with your healthcare provider and a trusted family member, seek referrals and don’t be afraid to ask for a second or third opinion if there are problems. Partner with physicians that can manage your disease. And, finally, take note of triggers that may cause flareup in the disease process and understand that this list is not conclusive. Recognize that you may have valid concerns which may include; identifying the most effective medical treatment, fears over potential disease associated disabilities and distresses over required lifestyle changes; all of which can be devastating. However, if you can remember to focus on your walk in the Spirit, your journey becomes a little less tremulous. “For, the Lord has promised never to leave or forsake you”, Hebrews 13:5.

Keep a journal about things that may be troubling you, and know that it is ok to release you feelings (talk it out, laugh, cry, express your frustration or anger when needed and with someone you trust).

Physical Aspect: When evaluating your options for proper diagnosis and disease management, talk with your doctor honestly. Share your medical history, signs and symptoms and any other information that is pertinent. Follow your treatment plan and ask questions. Keep a journal and write down questions prior to your doctor’s visit and refer to the list when conferencing with your health care provider. Go back to the basics which includes knowing your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.) and keeping them within a healthy range. Other pointers include; eating a diet that is nutritious, getting regular exercise, controlling your weight, reducing stress, avoiding tobacco products and environmental pollutant exposure. Finally, getting the proper rest which is essential. Any of these factors can serve as a trigger and attribute to flares of your disease. In addition, educate yourself on your specific autoimmune disease and be cautious when doing research

26 | Summer 2019

Mental and Emotional Aspect: From a mental and emotional standpoint, managing stress is an important component in managing autoimmune disease. Stress is defined in an August 2018 Harvard Health Medical School publication as “any experience that causes tension, whether physical, psychological, or emotional, especially if it sets off the fight or flight response”. Researchers theorized that persistent stress can lead to chronic disease including autoimmune disease. Although, tips on how to relieve stress may be different for each person, walking or

regular exercise are ways that you can began. Keep a journal about things that may be troubling you, and know that it is ok to release you feelings (talk it out, laugh, cry, express your frustration or anger when needed and with someone you trust). Additional tips include doing something you like (a hobby, volunteer work, etc.), learn what relaxes you (breathing exercises, massage, aromatherapy, yoga, listening to calming music, meditation, reading, etc. Throughout scripture, we are given words of encouragement during times of trials and tribulation. As we walk in the Spirit stay prayerful, seek guidance through the Holy Spirit and keep your focus of God. “6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 New King James Version (NKJV) Spiritual Aspect: From a spiritual perspective, study God’s Word even though you are being tested and tried. Jesus tells us in John 16:33 that; “...In the world ye shall have tribulations: but be of good cheer…”. God will renew our strength if we stay focused on worshiping and praising Him, rather than becoming fixated on our own conditions especially during times of greatest stress. Even so, scripture still gives us reassurance; “But, they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength…”, Isaiah 40:31. So, don’t allow what is going

on with you to affect your praise; for “we walk by faith and not by sight”, 2 Cor. 5:7. In addition, The Apostle Paul in Romans 12:12 admonishes us to; “Pray, rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, and be constant in prayer”. In the conclusion; “So boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps ‘cause you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now. For it’s still goin’, honey. It’s still climbin’, and life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”. Like the young man in this poem who would face many challenges, so too will you. And, though auto immune diseases can be extremely challenging, don’t you give up and don’t become stagnant in your walk with God. You must stay focused if you are to overcome. One writer expressed it like this; “as you wait on the Lord, be patient, keep believing, keep studying, and keep praying”, for the Lord is with you even in the midst of trials and tribulations. So; “Cast not away, therefore your confidence which hath great recompence of reward”, Hebrew 10:35. AMEN!

Consider This

THE RIGHT MOTIVATION   BY VANDERBILT BRABSON III, AUTHOR                                     One very stormy and rainy night many years ago in the early twentieth century, Timmy, a young boy of 12 years of age, was returning home from his best friend Jerry’s house. Suddenly as Timmy walked along, he remembered his mother’s warning, “Timmy, if you are not home by midnight when I lock all the doors and go to bed, don’t bother coming home at all this evening. Since it was almost 11:45 p.m., Timmy figured he could still easily make it home by midnight running in the heavy downpour by the dim light of the moon as long as he took a short cut through the woods and the cemetery on the other side of the woods. So off he sprinted in the rain through the woods and then afterwards into the cemetery as fast as his feet would take him. That is— until suddenly he stumbled and fell headfirst down into a freshly dug grave. Being short of stature, approximately four feet and seven inches, and standing in the bottom of that grave covered in mud from head to toe, Timmy found himself unable to scale the muddy walls of that grave. After repeatedly trying time and time again, only to slip and fall back down

34 | Summer 2019

into that rain-soaked grave, a very exhausted and frustrated Timmy, standing in three to four inches of water at the bottom of that grave and totally out of breath, stared upwards at that dimly lit moon. Suddenly Timmy began screaming at the top of his lungs in hopes someone would hear his cries for help, but no one came. Before long, not only wet but tired of seeking to free himself time-and-time again to no avail, Timmy gave up and decided he had no other choice but to wait until the morning when the cemetery’s caretaker would arrive. Dog-tired he crept over to the dark side of the grave where the dim light of the moon was not shining and leaned back into the dark shadows and fell asleep. That is, until about twenty minutes later when a loud thud and splash suddenly awoke him. To his surprise, another boy about his age and stature had fallen headfirst down into the grave also. The boy jumped to his feet and immediately began attempting to scale the wall time and time again but to no avail. Timmy decided to keep quiet in his dark corner and observe. He figured if the boy was successful

in getting out of that muddy, rain-soaked grave, then whatever the boy did to do so, he would do as well. But the boy wasn’t successful. No matter how hard and how many times the lad tried to scale the slippery walls of that grave, time after time, as Timmy had done before him, he just kept sliding back down into that muddy grave. Finally, as Timmy had done before, the boy stood to his feet and began screaming and screaming hoping to be heard. But he was no more successful at that than Timmy had been because no one came to his rescue either. Tired and completely exhausted, the boy stood motionless staring up at that dimly lit moon, as Timmy had done earlier before completely giving up. Timmy thought to himself now would be a good time to let this other kid know he was not alone in that grave. So Timmy, covered in mud from head to the soles of his shoes, slowly stood to his feet and quietly walked out of the shadows of that grave, approached the other boy from behind and said, as he laid his hand on the other boy’s shoulder, “You may as well give up because you’re not getting out of this grave tonight.” BUT HE DID! Isn’t it amazing what we can do and accomplish with just the right motivation? Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.” Galatians 5:16-17 Wes McAdams in an article on Christian Living cites the following nine excuses professing Christians give for their failing to regularly attend worship services on Sundays: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Sundays are my only days to sleep in I have to work on Sundays People judge me I don’t have the right clothes to wear I don’t need to I don’t get anything out of it All the songs they sing are old The people aren’t very friendly I have been feeling discouraged lately

McAdams concludes his article by asserting that Christians truly need to make every effort to be in the fellowship of the saints rather than making every excuse to stay away. Often times many of us who are true believers fail to understand that when Jesus called us to a life of Christian service through His shed blood, our flesh [that old sinful nature of ours] did not accept Christ’s invitation as we did. Therefore, when Jesus Christ called us off the curb of life to come to Him and accept His offer of salvation, we jumped up and ran to Him, having now realized He alone could truly fill the spiritual void in our empty lives. However, as we ran forward to our ordinarypeoplemagazine | 35

Lord’s welcoming embrace, we suddenly stopped, looked back, and noticed our old fleshly [sinful] nature was still sitting comfortably on that worldly curb. So, we beckoned to our old sinful fleshly nature, “Come on, Jesus is calling us!” But rather than joining us, our fleshly [sinful] nature sat comfortably on that curb with his/her arms folded in rebellion and replied, “No, He is calling you, not me.” And no matter how much we pleaded with our old sinful nature to join us, it absolutely refused to come. Why? Because God has no plan of redemption for our old sinful nature. Paul wrote: “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:11 In this passage from the book of Romans, Paul is saying once we truly accept Jesus’ invitation of salvation, we immediately have resurrection life and power. And since we do, we need to consider ourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in the person of Jesus Christ. In other words, we are no longer slaves to our old sinful nature. We left it behind when we truly came and surrendered our hearts and lives to Jesus Christ. Therefore, sin is no longer our master and has no power over us. Jesus Christ has now broken sin’s power over us and has become our new master for both time and eternity. And since we are now new creations in Jesus Christ, we have the power to refuse and resist any and all of sin’s commands on our lives. Therefore, as born-again believers in and by the blood of Jesus Christ, two roads lay before us; however, only one of them is the spiritual path forward. Those two roads are: 1. The Obedient Road of the Spiritual: This is the spiritual road of God’s blessings for those of us who earnestly choose to be Spirit led and Spirit filled as we endeavor to walk obediently before our Heavenly Father in the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit who enables us in our walk of faith, obedience, and service. (1 Corinthian 2:15-16), and 2. The Disobedient Road of the Carnal: This is the spiritual road of compromise. As believers, when we commit sin and choose not to confess it before God and seek His forgiveness and restoration, from that point on we are walking in the flesh until we humble ourselves, go to God, and confess our sin and seek

36 | Summer 2019

His forgiveness. The longer we put off confessing our sin, the more severe the discipline will be in our lives. Consider the story of the prodigal son, a parable that does not illustrate salvation because both brothers were already in the family. Rather, the parable of the prodigal son is the story of carnality. As Christians, we can make excuses and rationalize our wrong, our sin, because the chastening hand of God upon our lives does not come swiftly as sometimes our earthly fathers do. And because God’s chastening does not come swiftly, we grow comfortable in our sin and therefore we persist in it. In the parable of the prodigal son we see two specific examples of carnality—one example in the younger son, and one example in the older son. In the younger son, carnality manifest itself by the absence of his body as he left his father’s house to pursue worldly living as do individuals who stop attending the worship services in the church of their membership. In the older brother, rather than being absent in body as the younger brother, he instead remained home but was absent in mind and heart because of a worldly mindset as do individuals who continue to attend worship services at the church of their membership, but are worldly. If you are truly a believer and either of these scriptural examples of carnality describes your life, ask yourself what is it going to take, how long am I willing to live with unconfessed sin and a carnal lifestyle before I force God to seriously get my attention? Please understand that as genuine believers we have three (3) enemies: 1. The worldly system with its enticements of fortune, fame, power, and pleasure by which the younger prodigal son was seduced (1 John 2:15-16). 2. Satan and his demonic soldiers who seek to deceive believers into carnal lifestyles therefore rendering us ineffective in being used of God to impact this world with the gospel message and a holy lifestyle (2 Corinthians 11:14; Ephesians 6:11-12; 1 Peter 5:8) 3. Our flesh (our old sinful nature) Problem is many believers don’t take this enemy serious enough. Our fleshly sin nature, our former master prior to our coming to salvation through Jesus Christ, is continually warring within us to become our master again. We must understand that our fleshly nature is not our enemy some of the time or most of the time.

Our fleshly sinful nature is our enemy 100% of the time, and it is continually warring within us against the Spirit to bring us back into sin’s bondage. (Galatians 5:16-17). If you are truly a believer, God’s child, and have unconfessed sin in your life, let me urge you to go before our loving Heavenly Father and repent of that sin and seek His forgiveness. Failure to do so will ultimately force His chastening hand in your life, and please understand that no one could ever possibly love you and me more than our loving, gracious, and patient Heavenly Father. However, if you want to sincerely confess your sin and seek God’s forgiveness, please consider the words of a broken David before God as he too prayed and confessed his sin (Psalm 51: 1-12) 1. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. 5. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

“If you know that God loves you, you should never question a directive from Him. It will always be right and best. When He gives you a directive, you are not just to observe it, discuss it, or debate it. You are to obey it.” Henry Blackaby Henry Blackaby: Henry T. Let’s not force God’s chastening hand in our lives before we will repent, confess our sin, and seek His forgiveness. Fear should never be our greatest motivator for repentance, confession of sin, and seeking His forgiveness. Love for Him should be our greatest motivator, especially in light of all He has done for us at Calvary and continues to do day by day in our lives. We should love Him because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). ordinarypeoplemagazine | 37

Inspirational Words

P SALMS 91 ( K J V )   BY PARIS DUCKER                                                              He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which

With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

FROM WITHIN...   BY VERNA V. NICKELBERRY

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery”. (NIV) The Apostle Paul caution the Galatians of teaching that they were receiving which could lead them back to the bondage of the law. He ( Apostle Paul) had spoked against these teachers (Judaizing) before and shown “how contrary the principles and spirit of those teaching were to the spirit of the gospel.” (Matthew Henry

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage Galatians 5:1 (KJV)

Commentary) At this time they (Galatians) were no longer under the law, that they in fact could be justified only by faith in Jesus Christ, and not by the righteousness of the law. The law of Moses was no longer in force and Christians was not under any obligation to submit to it. He (Apostle Paul) would rather that they (the Galatians) would stand fast (hold on to) in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free and not be to entangle again with the yoke of bondage. We all long for freedom, and we deserve to be free, God created us to be free. This is the reason that Jesus Christ came and die for us, to bring liberty and freedom. But let us not get it twisted that we can have true liberty and freedom without Jesus Christ, and His Kingdom, and we can-not. Let us “Stand Firm” in the Gospel! And as always Love, Peace, and Increase…
