Is it Really

the Devil? BY SHARON E. LOCKLEAR, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF I grew up hearing about the devil, the power of the devil/Satan, the devil this, Satan that – the Devil sounded powerful and fearsome. I’m sure you’ve heard innumerable gospel songs lamenting what the devil has done.

power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. God has given us authority to overcome the power of the enemy and nothing will harm us. Do we exercise our God given authority in all areas of our lives? Are we lacking and/or slacking?

Is it really the devil that causes us to behave in an unacceptable manner, make decisions that are inappropriate, responsible for our relationships failing or our children running amuck and out of control?

We are preparing for 2023, as a Christian, I urge you and me to go deeper spiritually, align our lives more fully with God intent and purpose for our lives. We must be about God’s business without succumbing to fears and imaginings about the devil. We must become examples for our families, spiritual mentors for younger Christians or open to being mentored by senior Christians in our houses of worship and spiritual communities.

The power of the devil is not to be discounted; however, are we Christians overly ready to blame the devil for all the adverse conditions/ circumstances in our lives? Could we be doing less than we should regarding the devil? James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Are we submitting ourselves to God and resisting? Or are we fighting on our own, with our human skills, rather that submitting and allowing God to imbue us with the spiritual skills and mindedness that is required? Romans 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. God will crush the devil under your feet – sounds like God is all powerful and God’s power will allow us (Christians) to crush the devil under our feet. God is Powerful and allows us to crush the devil like ants who are unwelcome at a picnic. Luke 10: 19 I have given you authority to trample snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the

The time of Ephesians 6: 10-13 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done it all, to stand. Now is time, 2023 will require each Christian to put on the full armor of the Lord and we must be able to stand. Prepare yourself, the world has changed and we must meet it, armed with spiritual knowledge, clothed in God’s world and ready to do God’s will on Earth. Sharon Locklear

BE E N C OUR AGED BY MINISTER JEANETTE CHESTNUT CHESTER I have often heard people say “Revelations” when mentioning the Book of Revelation. However, it is not many revelations, but one. It is what was revealed to the Apostle John in the Spirit by the Lord. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 1 describes a vision of the Lord Jesus Christ, unveiling aspects of the Savior’s power and eternal mission, including the reassuring truth that the Lord labors among and with His faithful servants. John was the recipient on this vision. He refers to himself as a brother and companion In Chapter 1:1-3 we read: The revelation of Jesus in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants Jesus Christ while he was exiled on the isle of the things that must soon take place. He made it Patmos. According to most biblical historians, he known by sending his angel to his servant John, was exiled as a result of anti-Christian persecution 2.who bore witness to the word of God and to the under the Roman emperor Domitian. forecasting the ultimate destiny of the world. Verse 10-11 of Chapter 1 says this: I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11. saying, “Write what you see in a Interestingly, the Book of Revelation is the open book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus version of Daniel which was a closed book. Both and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira are prophetic books. The Book of Daniel Chapter and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” 12:1-4 is referred to as The Prophecy of the End Early Christians understood this phrase “on the Times. This is what Lord’s Day” meant it says “At that time he was worshiping on shall arise Michael, Sunday, resurrection “Our Lord Jesus is the great prince who day. The whole Bible is; for all revelation in which Daniel, is shown his people’s future. It is a revelation which God gave to Christ. Though Christ is himself God, and as such has light and life in himself, yet, as he sustains the office of Mediator between God and man, he receives his instructions from the Father. The human nature of Christ, though endowed with the greatest sagacity, (acuteness of mental discernment and soundness of judgment) and penetration, could not, in a way of reason, discover these great events, which not being produced by natural causes, but wholly depending upon the will of God, could be the object only of divine prescience, and must come to a created mind only by revelation. Our Lord Jesus is the great trustee of divine revelation; it is to Him that we owe the knowledge we have of what we are to expect from God and what He expects from us. Simply put, we can do nothing on our own, we owe all we are and all we receive to the Lord. Any revelation that we get, comes from the Lord. We know that in the book of Timothy 3:16-17 we are reminded that “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work”. This is what we receive as we get more revelation of Who Jesus is. We become complete, equipped and trained in the righteousness of Christ. He would have it no other way. We remember that the Lord does nothing unless He reveals it to His prophets. Amos 3:7. This means that God reveals to His people what is to come. It is also mentioned in Daniel 2:47- The king said to Daniel, “Your God is truly the God of gods and the Lord of kings, the Revealer of Mysteries, since you were able to reveal these mysteries. The Lord reveals what will happen so that repentance can take place. Just as He unveiled and disclosed to the Apostle John the things that were to take place in the Book of Revelation. This revelation Christ sent and signified by his angel. Observe here the admirable order of divine revelation. God gave it to Christ, and Christ employed an angel to communicate it to the churches. And the churches are obligated to respond. The angels are God’s messengers; they are ministering spirits to

16 | December 2022

the heirs of salvation. They are Christ’s servants: principalities and powers are subject to Him; all the angels of God are obliged to worship Him. The angels signified it to the Apostle John. As the angels are the messengers of Christ, the ministers are the messengers of the churches; what they receive from heaven, they are to communicate to the churches. John was the Apostle chosen for this service. Some think he was the only one surviving, the rest having sealed their testimony with their blood. This was to be the last book of divine revelation; and therefore, notified to the church by the last of the Apostles. John was the beloved disciple. He was, under the New Testament, as the prophet Daniel under the Old, a man greatly beloved. He was the servant of Christ; he was an apostle, an evangelist, and a prophet; he served Christ in all the three extraordinary offices of the church. The seven churches are named for their locations. The Book of Revelation provides descriptions of each Church. Ephesus (Revelation 2:1–7): known for having labored hard and not fainted, and separating themselves from the wicked; admonished for having forsaken its first love.

Smyrna (Revelation 2:8–11): admired for its tribulation and poverty; forecast to suffer persecution. Pergamum (Revelation 2:12–17): located where ‘Satan’s seat’ is; needs to repent of allowing false teachers. Thyatira (Revelation 2:18–29): known for its charity, whose “latter works are greater than the former”; tolerates the teachings of a false prophetess. Sardis (Revelation 3:1–6): admonished for – in contrast to its good reputation – being dead; cautioned to fortify itself and return to God through repentance. Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7–13): known as steadfast in faith, keeping God’s word and enduring patiently. Laodicea, (Revelation 3:14–22): called lukewarm and insipid. These letters follow a common theme. The Lord first addresses each church and identifies Himself, then defines things that He knows about the church in question. He is after all, the All -Seeing, All-Knowing God!

After this, a challenge or reproach is given, followed by a promise. In all seven cases the admonition is included, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches”, although sometimes this comes before the promise and sometimes after. The summation of all this is that the Church has ceased “hearing.” The sound has been muted and the ears have become dull. We are in a time now, a very crucial time where we need to be very sensitive to the voice of the Lord. We need to ask for His revelation and what He wants to unveil to us. We have to be aware of His timing and not move before He say so. We can remind ourselves of the promise of the Lord which tells us “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” Psalm 37:23. Whenever we feel as if our walk is not lining up with our talk or our confession is a little questionable, we would do well to get in the Spirit, and listen for the voice of Truth. Psalm 119:130 gives us this promise; The entrance of the Lord’s Word gives light. Be encouraged in this; we as the church have a “must need” to encounter the voice of the Lord. Just as the Apostle John did while he was worshipping. When we do this, we come face to face with truth, holiness and purity, which reveals, or uncovers our need to repent. The Spirit desires to sanctify the church that she might be pure and blameless as the Bride of Christ. He is giving us revelation daily and unveiling Himself daily so that we may turn from our wicked ways and seek His face. The prophetic voice is the revelation of Jesus Christ, it speaks what the Lord reveals. When Jesus revealed His revelation to John on the island of Patmos, John was alone having been exiled for even talking about Christ. Let me encourage you to get alone with Christ, separate from all distractions, turn off all gadgets and get in the Spirit and let the Lord minister to you. Grace and peace be multiplied unto you.

For Your Health

B e c omi ng Aware of t he He a lt h Ri sk Factors th at ar e S p e c i f i c to Us .

BY PAOLA TENNON, RN, BSN, MBA/HCA, CCM It is imperative that we put forth an effort to increase our awareness and take a stand regarding our health risk factors which can impact our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. There is a strong association between metabolic diseases and certain health risk factors, which can lead to devastating outcomes if not addressed. Many of the commonalities that exist between these disease processes and illnesses over an extended period can lead to what is considered chronic disease. These commonalities are typically precipitated by certain risk factors. Therefore, it is important that we not only identify but understand our health risk factors and take control by making the necessary lifestyle changes which can not only improve our quality of life, but potentially save our lives. Although different resources may define

30 | December 2022

risk in different ways, they all amount to the same thing. Risk is defined in the Webster New World College Dictionary as the chance of injury, damage, or the degree of probability of loss. Dictionary. com defines risk as a condition, behavior, or other factor that increases risk. They give the following examples: Smoking is a major risk factor for cancer; and depression is a risk factor in suicide. In addition, the medical definition for Risk factors states that it is: Something that increases a person’s chances of developing a disease and uses obesity as an example, which is a risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Risk factors can be either modifiable or non-modifiable. Modifiable risk factors are those in which we can take certain measures to change or control with changes in our lifestyle, thereby decreasing the probability

of developing serious health conditions. There are also non-modifiable risk factors which are inherent, meaning that they are not within our ability to change. Non-modifiable risk factors include, aging, family history (genetics), gender, and ethnicity. Modifiable risk factors on the other hand include hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, physical inactivity, overweight/ obesity, unhealthy diet, increased blood glucose, and some medications, such as, contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which may increase the risk of coronary heart diseases (12). A post on November 22, 2022, by Schome Health Org; names 4 modifiable risk factors in adults as being smoking, diet, physical activity, and alcohol consumption; and they also gave recommendations on how to address these issues. They further suggest that smoking is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for various chronic diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory diseases, all of which are considered leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States (4).

Another reference is given by The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study which highlights NCD risk factors. They state that: A worldwide crisis of chronic diseases and failure of public health to stem the rise in preventable risk factors have left populations vulnerable to acute health emergencies such as COVID-19. The study reveals that the rise in exposure to key risk factors - including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high body-mass index, and elevated cholesterol - combined with rising deaths from cardiovascular disease, suggest that the world might be approaching a turning point in life expectancy gains (14). Looking even further back we find a 2010 World Health Report that identified other modifiable risk factors as: social and economic conditions including: poverty, employment, and family composition; Environment, such as climate or air pollution; Culture, such as practices, norms, and values; and urbanization, which influences housing, access to products and services (15). More recently, a July 2022 posting by the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention

and Health Promotion states that six in ten adults in the U.S. have a chronic disease and four in ten adults have two or more. They further state that chronic diseases are defined as conditions which last for one or more years and require ongoing medical attention. In addition, one may experience limited activity due to their condition.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV. Our reference text for this article is from the book of Revelations which is a foreshadowing of things to come. Attention is given to the 7 churches in chapters 2 and 3 because of the emphasis given on their strengths and weaknesses. By bringing awareness to these seven churches, we can see that they had the opportunity to make the appropriate changes before it was This group of chronic diseases include chronic lung too late. Just as these scriptures were apropos in disease, chronic kidney disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, Biblical times, they remain relevant to the church of with heart disease, cancer and diabetes being the today and to us. The illustrations of these churches leading causes of death and disability in the U.S. given in scripture, can be used to help to forewarn (1). Statistics and the associated cost of these last us of potential dangers and this thought process three conditions are staggering and amount to 90% can also be applied to every aspect of our lives of the nation’s $4.1 trillion annual healthcare cost including our health (9). Therefore, honor God with your bodies,” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV.” (2). of heaven for these Christians. Laodicea, The Lukewarm Church: They were neither hot nor cold as we read in Revelation. Their reliance on riches and things of this world resulted in a lukewarm, halfway-in type of Christianity.

The takeaway for these churches is that if they did not conform to what the Lord had told them, their would-be dire consequences; however, if they did, there would be benefits. As we utilize this scenario to apply it to our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing, we will find that our overall health including our emotional and mental status, physical health, and spiritual welfare will all be safeguarded. Research has identified a clear link between lifestyle and disease. Increasing awareness is the first step we are to take to reducing our health risks with the goal of changing unhealthy behaviors. During this process we can begin by changing the way we think about health, it is not a challenge that we must give up everything to overcome, but rather a goal in which to strive for in order that we may obtain optimal health, remove blocks to healing, break free of mental strongholds, and get in control of self. The in results is improved health, increase longevity and an increased quality of life. According to the Merk Manual of Health and Aging, the general goal of prevention is to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill, disabled, or dying prematurely. Risk factors, such as, lifestyle and physical and social environment can be altered thereby reducing these risks through preventive medical care and strategies when the focus is placed on preventing disease or slowing decline in function and avoiding weakness. In addition, for those who are experiencing chronic disease conditions, the focus should be on preventing accidents and complications (16). Strategies for establishing goals for maintaining or improving health will depend on the risk factors identified. The following factors may be considered when establishing prevention goals: whether you or your loved one: is sedentary, smokes cigarettes or use other tobacco products, drinks alcohol or engages in other substance abuse activities, gets increased sun exposure, or eats well balanced meals; just to name a few. When we consider these types of factors and share them with the health care

practitioners, goals can be developed that will help in making the needed changes in one’s lifestyle practices thereby improving their quality of life. The National Institute on Aging offers the following information on health risk prevention strategies as a plan for healthy living. However, these strategies can be applied to all ages. Lastly, from a spiritual perspective, God does not desire for any of His children to suffer, therefore we have the responsibility of taking care of these bodies that we have been given. Proverbs 3:1-6. Less we forget that there is also a direct connection between our overall health and spirituality. In this article we have already discussed the tenets of good health such as nutrition, exercise, quality sleep, etc. However, we must not forget that it also includes spirituality. According to an array of research, health benefits resulting from the practice of spirituality include a stronger immune system, lower risk of depression, stress reduction, lower blood pressure, and better sleep. Incorporating all these strategies in our lifestyle will enable us not just to become more aware of our health risk but will empower us to push forward with fortitude with a goal to optimize our health and the health of those we love (17).

My oldest son, Rasheed Terrell, called me tonight to tell me that he loved me and that he appreciated me for the work that I am doing with the family business. Dollar General. I mentioned all of this because I owe it all to Jesus and my mother. God used my mother to teach us and to take care of us. She did that well. I can not say enough about how she selflessly took care of us. She suffered abuse at the hands of our father. She braved the cold winters with hardly any heat of any kind in the house. She suffered through the sweltering heat during the summers with only one fan to keep us cool. Mother kept the homes that we lived in exceptionally clean. However, we were poor and could not afford the normal amenities that most families had. We did not have adequate windows and had to nail boards where the windows should have been. Sometimes we would find a snake in the house. We would fan the flies out during the day and mother would spray the rooms with black flag during the night to keep the mosquitoes from biting us. We slept six to a bed. Three of us would sleep at the head of the bed and three at the foot of the bed. There were two beds for me and my siblings. That is how we kept warm during the winter months. We had a pot belly wooden heater but, the pipes were busted most of the time. At one house, we had a fireplace. It could only head one room, however. God gave us a beautiful and wonderfully made mother. If it were not for the Lord on our side, we would not have made it through those rough times. Mother is the glue that held us together. Daddy was so abusive that he suffered mother to lose three children. Two were still born and one died shortly after birth. He would beat mother until blood would flow from her face. She would fight back because she had something to fight for, the welfare of her children. Even after he was killed, mother remained faithful to her vows to him. She never remarried. She told us that she wanted to keep the name Lewis. She wanted all of us to have the same name. That was her way of keeping unity in the family. All her children were by the same man. She never had another. She was faithful to the Lord and to her husband until the day she died. I was called to the

hospital in 2010 by my sister Vera. Vera told me to rush because the doctors could not revive mother. When I arrived at the Greenwood Leflore Hospital, she was gone. The night before, I had visited her at the hospital. The last words she spoke to me as I was leaving was, “continue to pray, always pray.” I turned around, as I had already made it to the door, and went back and gave her a hug. I saw her no more………………………

It happened one morning at our elementary school. It was probably somewhere around late November, and we kids had just returned to school following the Thanksgiving holiday celebration break the week before. The incident happened between young Samuel and me. Both Samuel and I were third graders, and Samuel was a pretty tough kid and a little taller than me, but not at all mean-spirited. “Guys…this is Missile Morgan” Seeking to overcome the scars from her abusive, alcoholic father, Jesse Cartwright, Anthony’s best friend from childhood, is determined to make something of her life. Tomboyish in every way, at times her stubbornness puts her in direct conflict with Anthony’s other friends. A born fighter, she ultimately proves to be tougher than every boy in the neighborhood and the only friend Anthony can really count on. As Anthony battles his inner demons in his march toward glory, and Jesse struggles through her own personal tragedies and loss, their paths grow apart. Eventually the two dis- cover their lives are somehow intertwined and neither will truly realize his or her dreams without the other. Surpassing the expectations his father had for him, Anthony Morgan is poised to be the biggest phenomenon baseball has seen in years. Anthony’s future is set. He has worked hard for it, dreamed about it all his life, and can practically taste it! However, what Anthony could not foresee was the untimely death of his father—his mentor and hero. This tragedy started a downward spiral of bad decisions, which ultimately threaten Anthony’s life and future in baseball. Beyond the Lies is as captivating as The Natural, as compelling as Love Comes Softly, and at times as humorous as Diary of a Mad Black Woman. It’s a coming of age story that will appeal to the young and old, the sports enthusiast, the romantic, those gripped by human tragedy, and those who celebrate the triumph of the human spirit. P SALMS 100 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankfull unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

FROM WITHIN... BY VERNA V. NICKELBERRY What a year it has been! We started the year off with introducing our Travel Totes and Tote bags at the “Atlanta Women Expo” which was a very rewarding experience with in itself. What I learned , that large expo/trade shows are a lot of hard work! Completed two certifications, attended a conference, traveled for business and personal, not to mentioned that, life happened along to way. Through all the ups and down we/I kept moving forward. The Bible tell us that “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose” Rome 8:28 We ended 2022 with our biggest event of the year (each year) OPM 8th Annual Servant Awards! And each year is gets better! This year we added our first keynote speaker, Mrs. Karen Harrell, and she was awesome! A huge thank you to everyone who played a part, those who come out to support all of the honorees, those who helped behind the scene, those who stepped in at the last minute, I appreciate you more than you know. Shout out to the best engineer ever, RENEGADE EL REY, thank you for showing up each year! Congratulation to all of the 2022 honorees! Until next year! And as always, Love, Peace, and Increase… Verna V. Nickelberry
