had a need for others which God commands, I just didn’t realize it. Here’s what scripture says: Hebrews 10:24 (ESV) And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near The word for stir up literally means to incite or to push to. We are to push each other to what, sin? No! Love and good works!! We are to meet together, and encourage one another. Listen, I’m not against Facebook. I enjoy my social media, but encouragement online pales in comparison to encouragement in person. That’s the kind I need daily. I have some really scary looking dudes in my church. When I mean scary, I don’t mean they levitate, I mean that they are big, strong, tattooed dudes that look like they can kill you. That kind of scary. When I share the Gospel

with them, I let them know that as big and strong as they are, I can bring 30 5th graders in and take them down. They always laugh when I say this. Why? Because they know it’s true. Numbers matter. In fact, most of the time, numbers win. There is safety in numbers, right? This means you and I need to be a part of the local church, not just attenders. We must be accountable to others, not just facebook friends. We must be a part of a local community that is rich, poor, older, younger, married, single, crazy, conservative, Republican, Democrat, home school, public school, no school kind of a community! Why? Because Jesus was. And real community, brings real change. So now, I’m in real community, because I want to be more like Jesus, and I want to obey Him. I need to be surrounded by men that are committed to the same things I am (Godly living) and worship the same God I do (King Jesus). They hold me accountable. They love me, and the push me to love and good works. You know what? That’s your call as well. What’s keeping you from being in accountability? What’s keeping you from real community? It’s my prayer for you. It’s God’s command for all of His children. Don’t make me send the 5th graders. :) Want more verses on community? the life I desperately wanted. Boy, do I wish I could go sit in that car beside my single self and tell her some life-giving truths I now know. the hardest day of the week for me when I was single was Sunday. Specifically Sunday right after church.

I remember

Many of my other single friends would have plans with their families that day, but not me. My family lived 9 hours away. So, I’d walk through the parking lot watching young moms ooh and ahh over Sunday school artwork and I’d think, “Their lives seem so blissfully full.” I’d walk past an older couple holding hands and think, “They are so lucky to have such an easy, breezy life.” I’d walk past a gal walking arm in arm with her boyfriend and think, “She is so fortunate to feel loved.” And then I’d get in my car and decide happiness, fulfillment, and contentment were something to hope for in the future, when I found

1. Loneliness isn’t fixed by surrounding yourself with more people. Sure, having people to go grab lunch with after church is great. And having the built-in companionship of your own family is wonderful. But it hasn’t fixed my struggles with loneliness like I thought it would. Some of the loneliest women I know wear wedding rings.

2. Learn from the pitfalls in friendships. If only I would have dared to really look, I could have seen patterns of pitfalls in my relationships. Some of the same relationship struggles I had in my single friendships quickly popped up in my marriage. Being a little more self-aware of how I contributed to frustrations in friendships would have helped me work on having a healthier marriage even before I met my husband.

“What are those things you truly love spending time doing, creating, or researching? Invest your lonely moments there.”

I had to learn to enjoy life without being dependent on someone else to create the fun for me. That way I could bring the fun. I could bring the interesting conversation starters. And I could start to better discern the kinds of people who would get me.

What are those things you truly love spending time doing, creating, or researching? Invest your lonely moments there. Create life-giving experiences around your unique passions. After all, people are attracted to others who are full of life.

I could have learned valuable self-improvements like taming my spontaneity a tad, remembering that not everyone likes to talk before the sun comes up, and working to not interpret everything with way more emotion than necessary. Just to name a few.

I absolutely would have encouraged my single self to make good use of those hard friendship moments by learning — really learning — from them. 3. Stop expecting perfection. All those people I was watching those Sunday afternoons weren’t living perfect lives. They were having a moment of perfection in the midst of very imperfect relationships. None of those moms were perfect moms. None of those couples were perfect couples. None of those families were perfect families. I obviously know this with my head. But sometimes my heart gets tripped up looking for perfection and missing what’s really good. Single self, realize perfection doesn’t exist on this side of eternity, and it’s exhausting to

chase something that doesn’t exist. So, look at relationships through the lens of grace. Instead of asking, “Is this the perfect relationship I’ve dreamed about?” ask, “Is this a person with whom I can both give and receive grace?”

Sundays are no longer the hardest days of the week for me. But it wasn’t because I got married and had kids. It’s because I finally learned how to bring the joy I wanted to experience, became a healthier version of me, and stopped chasing perfection.

Worship & Mission: Building God’s Throne Room on Earth By Darlene Zschech

“Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.” James 4:17 (NLT)

I’ve been really praying about this topic: worship and mission. These two words are like fire in my belly; they daily give me my purpose and reason. They are not entirely separate from each other; they are almost like a bride and groom—hard to have a wedding with just one of them. Yet mission will always be trumped by worship for worship abides forever. As we continue to create God’s throne room here among us, building his glorious throne of praise and going deeper in our understanding and experience, we will realize the passion God has for the lost and broken, that everyone needs to hear, see, and know the goodness of the gospel. Revelation I continually find myself in John 4, seeing and hearing the scene where “true worship” is discussed by Jesus and the Samaritan woman. Seeing once more that when Christ’s Lordship

is established, living waters are our promise, our inheritance, our radical need, and God’s even more radical provision. As we continue to reveal Jesus in every area of our lives, I see God’s throne being established among us in our churches, in our communities, in our families, in our new experiences and in our traditions. For wherever He is enthroned, there you’ll find hearts that are open and thirsty for the one thing none of us can acquire elsewhere, only from relationship with Jesus: Living Water.

always announcing freedom, always dependent on the Holy Spirit to fill us, change us, lead us, and turn our sorrows into joy, our mourning into dancing. More Than a Song To worship with our life means that it is not just in the singing of songs that we find our hearts emblazoned with mission, but it is the result of a worshipful life where mission finds its expression in the going, the sending, and the daily expression of our faith in the ordinary. As Christ followers, all that we are should be somehow resulting in bringing the love and light of Christ to our world. Is this mission? Yes. Is this worship? Yes.

What if I get up there and I’m too scared to get back down?

How can truthful and authentic worship be anything but missional? In genuine worship we are constantly declaring God’s goodness, always announcing and declaring that he is with us, always being filled with joy in his presence,

derly in his hands. This little boy’s heart was opened to the love of Jesus, and he experienced what it was like to draw from a well that could never be taken from him, and certainly never run dry. I may not have been leading lots of worship through music over the last 12 months, but the mission of my life, as a worshiper, has not changed one bit. As I’ve sat in doctors’ waiting rooms and laid in bed for many months, that call to take Jesus to every sacred place burns in me just like leading people to his glorious courts

Love you dearly, Darlene Taken from her bi-monthly column in Worship Leader magazine, Darlene Zschech is a regular contributor to Worship Leader magazine and will be a general session speaker at National Worship Leader Conference in Kansas City, KS June 23-25.

Limitless Connection I’ll never forget sitting in the South African dirt with a beautiful four-year-old boy in an orphanage in Johannesburg. It seemed nothing could reach his lonely little heart, no toys or games, not even the crazy young musicians traveling along with us could find a way to connect with him. His eyes were glazed over; I cannot bear to think about what he had endured at such a young age. So in the dirt, into his gorgeous, perfectly formed little ears, I started to sing, “Jesus loves me.” It only took moments for his stunning tear-filled eyes to look up, and it was like our hearts connected right there and then. Building Jesus a throne in the middle of the dirt. As we drew near, he drew near to us (Jas 4:8). That’s the promise. There is no other name like the name of Jesus to heal our wounds, calm our fears, walk with us through suffering, and to even hold an aching four-year-old heart ten-

What is FCA – Fellowship of Christian Athletes? Valley Christian Magazine sat down with Paul Parsons – the New Fellowship of Christian Athletes Area Representative for RGV West.

VCM: Where were you before?

Third is by giving. FCA is a non-profit organization. Ministry takes money…this is a big lesson I’ve learned coming on as Area Rep. There’s so much more than what I had just has viewed as “some resources here….some resources there.”

PAUL: I was finishing school in Florida.

VCM: How can a student get involved?

VCM: Big transition from Florida to The Valley?

PAUL: Get involved with their campus huddle. If there isn’t one, I would love connect and help them get one started.

VCM: When did you become our Area Representative? PAUL: I joined FCA back in June 2014…about 9 months ago.

PAUL: Weather No….Culture Yes Really more of going from the school mentality and atmosphere where I had been for a few years. I had a great group of friends and community. I came here and I only knew Nathan Jones. He’s the Multi-Area Representative for FCA in our region. Building brand new relationships…brand new area. It’s been a lot of fun. VCM: How long has FCA been in the Valley? PAUL: FCA has been in the Rio Grande Valley for 40 years, well before I came here. There are already well-established campus huddles through out the Valley. There are tons of volunteers that are currently leading their campus huddles in Bible studies, character studies, leadership traits and investing in their kids. VCM: As Area Representative, what do you do? PAUL: I oversee the West end of the Valley from Donna to Roma and then Edinburg to the Border. My main goal is to develop Campus Ministry on the Jr. High and High School level. I come along all the established coaches, teachers, volunteers and see what I can do for them. Pray for them. Connect them to resources. Invest in them personally and spiritually so that they’re equipped. Once I minister to them…I can minister through them to all the kids in the huddles. VCM: How many huddles are there?

VCM: What are some upcoming events for FCA? PAUL: We have a camp coming up at the end of April – Weekend of Champions. This is South Texas only camp; we get as many kids from across the valley and from Corpus Christi to Laredo. We get together at Camp Zephyr. We have some fun games and events. The camp is about INSPIRATION AND PERSPIRATION! They’re gonna sweat, work, have fun then hear some inspiration! Great speakers and worship is lined up for them. We are also excited to have our Victory Gala coming up on March 19th at the McAllen Convention Center Ballroom. Colt McCoy will be our headline speaker. South Texas is excited and buzzed about him speaking! We have sponsorship opportunities, tables for purchase and individual tickets as well. Money raised at the Gala all go to student camps & transportation, ministries, bibles, and huddle resources. It all directly goes to our kids in our area. Colt McCoy is fantastic football player in the NFL. He’s a man of Faith…he knows Jesus. On top of being really good at football, he’s also humble at what he does. I believe he is going to be a great example to our coaches and student athletes to see. VCM: Where can we get information for the Victory Gala?

PAUL: In our West District, there are about 40 in our high schools and junior highs.

PAUL: Contact me at 956-358-0690 or Robin at our office at 956-279-1121 or email us at rmartinez@fca.org.

VCM: How can an Adult get involved with FCA?

VCM: Why is FCA important to Valley families and student athletes?

PAUL: First Pray for us. The more and more I get involved the more I’ve come to realize is this is more than I’m capable of doing on my own! Second, volunteer is a great way to get involved…whether you’re a teacher, coach or business professional. FCA is only successful is when people in the community come together and get involved. If there’s an already established huddle near you, you can come alongside them and get involved. It can be as simple as bringing donuts when they meet or help get speakers for the group.

12  valleychristianmagazine.com

PAUL: I believe the statistic is 80% of people that make a decision about their faith, make that decision before college. Once they graduate college a lot already formulate who they will be and what they will believe. FCA plays a pivotal role in reaching these kids during this crucial time. And now more than ever when there is so much negativity and pressure in school, FCA comes along side them and shares that there is an answer….there is hope. They can be a part of a positive group that will not only influence them but their friends too. FCA will help them with the opportunity to make a choice that will affect their life.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is touching millions of lives… one heart at a time. Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ. The FCA Vision To see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. The FCA Mission To present to coaches and athletes, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. The Four C’s of Ministry: Coaches Ministry The Coaches Ministry vision is to redeem sports through transformed coaches. FCA ministers to coaches through Bible studies, prayer support, discipleship and mentoring, resources, outreach events and retreats. Campus Ministry The Campus Ministry is initiated and led by student-athletes and coaches on junior high, high school and college campuses. It has four ministry types: Huddles, Team Bible Studies, Chaplain Programs and Coaches Bible Studies. Additionally, outreach events take place on the campus such as One Way 2 Play — Drug Free programs, school assemblies and the annual Fields of Faith event. Camp Ministry Camps are a time of “inspirations and perspiration” for coaches and athletes to reach their potential by offering comprehensive athletic, spiritual and leadership training. These types of camps are Sports Camp, Leadership Camp, Coaches Camp, Power Camp, Partnership Camp, Team Camp and International Camp. Community Ministry The “win” of Community Ministry is to see the community reached for Jesus Christ through adult involvement. FCA partners with local churches, businesses, parents and volunteers to invest in coaches and athletes participating in club, recreational and youth sports teams. FCA Teams have also been created to impact the sports community. Other areas of Community Ministry include adult ministries, professional athlete ministries, resources and clinics.

E

ver since the Lord stated the words, “It is not good for the man to be alone…” the human race has had the opportunity and privilege of interacting with each other in the form of relationships. For every one of us, relationships are an everyday part of our human existence. We have relationships with family, friends, co-workers, and even marriage. Personally, I have been married going on seven years! Seven amazing years! (Hopefully my wife is reading this article.) I do not claim to be an expert on relationships, but I have learned a thing or two on the subject. I want to give you some of my “RELATIONTIPS” to hopefully encourage you and help shed some light on any relationship in your life. One of my first tips that I would suggest is to NEVER STOP CONSTRUCTION. Did you know that God is continually at work in your life? In the Bible, Philippians 1:6 gives us a great hope because it states, “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it…” So, if we believe that God is at work in our personal lives, could we also agree that He is at work in our relationships? Our marriages? I have arrived at the conclusion that any type of relationship takes work and that there is always room for improvement. For example, a great

marriage is not an accident. It is the result of two people who are fully invested in making it better. Many people will give attention to their careers and even physical bodies, but will neglect their relationships. Understand that relationships are generally under construction, require attention, and can continually get better than yesterday. Your “honeymoon” years do not have to be your best years! A second suggestion would be to STAY AWAY

“The grass is not greener on the other side, but the grass is greener where you water it.”

FROM COMPARISON. Let me add first that there is nothing wrong with being inspired by others. My wife and I are consistently challenged and inspired by other godly couples. However, in today’s social context of Facebook and Twitter, it is easy to see other couples or relationships that seem to be doing better or worse than you. Comparison can sometimes have negative effects. Often times, it appears that “others” have it together and are living in heaven. Or her “husband” seems to be perfect, or his “wife” does everything yours does not. This can lead to dissatisfaction or discouragement with your relationship or spouse. Reminder: not everything is as it seems, especial-

ly on social media. The grass is not greener on the other side, but the grass is greener where you water it. Real satisfaction comes from doing your best, and not comparing yourself to others. Another thing I have learned is that SOME THINGS SHOULD STAY CONFIDENTIAL. I know that this “tip” may seem too simple and rudimentary, but I think it needs to be stated more times than not. Personally, I believe that you don’t have to share everything on social media. These are great tools for connection and conversation, but not a great place for venting out frustration or problems within the marriage context or other close relationships. Practice the art of discretion. If something is going terribly wrong in your relationship, seek help from trusted friends. Talk to your pastor, or a trusted godly advisor. We are responsible for our own relationship. When you show vulnerability in a public forum such as social media, you just might attract the wrong type of opinions and advice. Use caution and wisdom. Remember, God is still at work in you and I also believe in your relationships. Next month, I will share some other “tips” I have learned in my personal journey. May the Lord richly bless you!

The Exhausting Christian Life by James MacDonald

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good (Romans 7:15–16, ESV).

any Christians are tired; some are very tired. They don’t have the passion for God they once had and feel a vague guilt about it. The sequence follows a predictable pattern: seasons of renewed expectation and energetic pursuit, followed by disappointment, and finally, utter exhaustion.

My Father, forgive me for trying to live for you in my own strength. No matter how hard I try, I come away feeling exhausted and defeated. Forgive me for thinking I only need You to save me, but not to empower me. I am at the end of myself, and I need You. Will You live Your life through me? following Jesus. There are times when we have to confront one another, and it is never pleasant. But if you enjoy confrontation, then something is wrong. Some people just want to fight. They are always upset with someone or something. The problem with people like this is they can’t keep it to themselves. They are always stirring up others. That is not the way to live as a Christian. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 13 that “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” We can choose to believe the best of others. Of course, we can’t see another person’s heart. But what a difference it would make if we started blessing others instead of blasting them.

La Emoción

Más Grande Luis Palau

C

Praying by Hand by Jerrell Jobe

he Book of Psalms, which takes up a large portion of the Old Testament in the Bible, is a fascinating collection of writings. They are not merely sonnets, songs or poetic expressions. Rather, they are the authentic outflow of human hearts laid bare before God. In the Psalms we find thoughts, feelings, events, circumstances and situations that the writers actually experienced. The psalmists took these experiences, along with all the mental, emotional, spiritual churching that they provoked on the inside of their being and put them to words. They took that which was going on deep inside and turned it into an outward expression of writing. Writings that were actually laments, confessions, reflections, observations, and prayers. The Book of Psalms, we could say, is a collection of ancient journals penned by men of God. In them, we see their internal struggles of fear, faith, doubt; the very grim of their own souls and the grit of their lives. All is exposed to God. Throughout history many have found this practice of writing out prayers helpful. The following are a few personal observations and benefits I’ve discovered as it relates to writing out my prayers through the spiritual practice of journaling. Journaling brings clarity. “Thoughts disentangle themselves,” writes Dawson Trotman “when they pass through the lips and the fingertips.” In the Old Testament, God gave King David instructions regarding the construction of the temple. There’s an interesting verse in 1 Chronicles 28:19. David writes, “the Lord made me understand in writing, by His hand upon me, all the works of these plans.” It seems that there was something about the process of writing out that which God had instructed that increased David’s understanding of what was being communicated by God. Journaling helps us to pay attention and recognize God’s activity in our lives. Journaling is a way of paying attention to our lives. A fundamental principle of Christian Spirituality is the truth that God is at work in our lives. The Apostle Paul declared, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” God is at work, however, often we may not be aware of where or how He is at work within our lives. Journaling helps us to pay attention and begin to recognize God’s divine activity, even in the mundane moments of life. “Journaling” writes Richard Peace in his book Spiritual Journaling “focuses mind and heart on the issues of growth with the aim of discerning what God is doing in one’s life. By using a journal, we come in touch with our cutting edges of growth, those areas where questions exist or where there is need or longing. These are areas where the Holy Spirit seems most active.”

I’ve found it helpful to periodically get alone, pull out my journal and prayerfully reflect and listen to God as I ask the following questions. Where is God currently at work in my life? What has He been trying to teach me through Scripture, Church, as well as through my present circumstances? The very act of writing out these type of questions or other prayers in general causes my mind to slow down and be more focused on the present moment with God. Journaling helps slow down the mind to the pace of the hand, so the heart can catch up with the speed of life. Journaling cultivates openness and honesty. The Psalmist, vividly demonstrate what it looks like to come before God with openness and honesty. As the Psalmist wrote out his own prayers, he said things like: “I pour out before him my complaint; before him I tell my trouble (Psalm 142:2)” And, “My longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. (Psalm 38:9). Journaling is a place to be un- “There’s an expectancy. A masked and meet God. So we watchfulness. An anticipation lay ourselves out on the page. that God is speaking. To this We lay who we really are beposture, God responds” fore Jesus, hiding nothing. We are an open book. “A journal can become a sacred place,” writes Margaret Feinberg in her book God Whispers. She continues we are “blank pages are transformed into a site where you can record the most intimate parts of your soul. A place where you can travel with your deepest thoughts and confessions. A place where you can slip off the mask of who you are supposed to be and slip into something more comfortable: who you really are.”

Journal reminds me of God’s character. Often, as we process our experiences with God, like the Psalmists, we gain a fresh perspective on the nature and character of God. We see our perspective has been skewed or misguided. Journaling documents a personal history with God. I have journals that chronicle the past twenty-years of my journey with God. In them are all sorts of prayers. Sins I’ve confessed. Transitions of life, relationships, jobs, geography, just to name a few. These simple notebooks, in a way, very much document my personal history with God. As I review them, I can observe repetitive themes like cycles of sins, patterns of growth. The ongoing nature of a journal catalogs the journey of a soul with God. These journals remind me of the many expressions of God’s faithfulness to me throughout the years. They illustrate God’s commitment to journey with me as I’m progressively transformed into the image of Christ. Getting Started You don’t need to journal every day or even every week. A good place to start is simply to grab a notebook and engage the two exercises outline above. As you read and meditate on Scripture, take a meaningful verse, write it out and allow it to become a launching point for a conversation with God. Take a difficult relationship or circumstance and begin processing it with God through writing. Once you’ve written for a while, turn to God, listen and see what He may want to say to you. JERRELL JOBE

Jerrell is a teaching pastor at Palm Valley Church in Mission. He is married to Charissa and has three children.

Journaling enables us to listen to God’s voice. There are times when God is communicating to us, yet we are unaware. In the Bible, God called out to Samuel, but Samuel didn’t realize it was God. Jacob had a pretty dramatic supernatural experience, only to comment the next morning, “God was here and I was unaware.” God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. -Job 33:14 “We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade, the presence of God,” penned C.S. Lewis, “The world is crowded with Him. He walks everywhere incognito. And the incognito is not always hard to penetrate. The real labour is to remember, to attend. In fact, to come awake. Still more, to remain awake.” Journaling postures us to listen expectantly to what God may be saying to us. Look at what the prophet Habakkuk said, I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. -Habakkuk 2:1 There’s an expectancy. A watchfulness. An anticipation that God is speaking. To this posture, God responds: Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. -Habakkuk 2:2 Another exercise that I’ve found helpful is to set aside some time, write out the following prayer and allow some time to write…

God, is there anything you want to speak to me in regards to my ...my relationship with you? ...family? ...work? ...life? Journaling these thoughts/words out has another benefit. Journaling helps us to see the next steps. The Lord instructed Habakkuk to write it down and make it plain. Why? So the one who say it could run with it. God’s instructions are intentional. They give direction. They often require a response. As such, journaling can help me to see what I need to do next. Not to mention, the act of writing it down, helps me to keep the vision before me. In other words, it helps me not to forget.

Why Didn’t Jesus Trust People? Artwork by Alyssa Andres, age 9

“Because Jesus knew some people were mean,” says Torie, 7.

remainder of life is waiting for renewing-ofmind transformation.

If you’ve ever watched any old western movies, you know that some people enjoy being mean. They wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Bible is God’s handbook for renewing minds. It presents a worldview where God replaces us as the center of the universe. That takes some rethinking of how we view ourselves, people and the world in which we live.

Early in his ministry, Jesus performed miracles in Jerusalem. The Bible says, “Many believed in his name when they saw the signs which he did. But Jesus did not commit himself to them, because he knew all men, and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for he knew what was in man” (John 2:23b-25).

The Apostle Paul wrote this: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2).

Some people try to parse the word “believe” in this text to mean the people didn’t really believe at all. It was some kind of head belief and not a true heart belief. The Gospel of John knows nothing of this kind of nonsense. People either believe in Jesus or don’t believe in him.

A seminary student once approached the academic dean with a philosophical conundrum. He said that the library at the secular university he attended had a tight security system to prevent students from stealing books. Yet, most professors “And do not be conformed to this taught that people world, but be transformed by the This kind of parsing were basically good. renewing of your mind, that you usually comes from the The seminary library naïve notion that the may prove what is that good and had no security moment one believes acceptable and perfect will of God” system, yet the in Jesus as savior, seminary doctrinal -Romans 12:2 all of life is instantly statement taught that transformed. Jesus people were created should be able to trust those who believe in in God’s image but fallen in the sense that him, right? they inherited Adam’s original sin. Wrong. “Even if people believe in Jesus, their mind, will and emotions still might not be changed until they renew their minds with the Bible,” says Katherine, 9. It’s true that life’s biggest problem instantly disappears at the moment of conversion. All Christians will be raised from the dead to share in Christ’s victory over death. But the

The security system at the secular university tells the real story of how school administrators viewed their students. Policy makers didn’t trust them. They knew that books would disappear without a security system. I suppose seminary administrators hoped that ministerial students had been transformed enough in their walk with Christ to resist the temptation to steal library books. “Jesus was afraid that if people knew about

the miracles he did, some people would get angry and kill him before God’s timing,” says Emma, 10. Jesus knew the difference between new believers and seasoned disciples. He wasn’t about to trust new believers with things that could interrupt God’s timetable for him. Think about this: Before Jesus left this world, he commissioned his disciples to take the gospel to the uttermost parts of the world. He promised to send the Holy Spirit to empower them for this worldwide task. Memorize this truth: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Ask this question: Can God trust you to spread the good news?

Dear Dave,

Serious about getting out of debt?

Should you budget for mad money, or just carrying around cash, when you’re trying to get out of debt? Aurora Dear Aurora, What really matters is the amount of mad money you allow yourself to have. Everyone needs a little pocket money. It’s probably not going to throw you off too much if you put $10 or $20 in there. But $100 or $200? That’s a bit much when you’re scrimping, saving and supposedly working hard to get out of debt. Think of it as a safety valve, Aurora. Everyone needs a break and a little fun now and then. Whether it’s grabbing lunch out, or going to a movie once in a while, you need to relax and let off little steam. Just make it part of your regular monthly budget, and stick to the amount. Little things like this will help keep your total money makeover moving in the right direction without wearing you out! —Dave

On the road again? Dear Dave,

We’ve got our emergency fund in place, and we’re debt-free except for our home. We’d like to have a child soon, but my job requires frequent travel. I don’t want to be away most of the time when there’s a baby in the house, so I’m thinking about opening my own business. That way, I can set my own hours. What do you think of this idea?

Dave Says

Ray Dear Ray, Ask yourself this question: If time and money weren’t considerations, which one would you rather do? You’d be on straight commission as an entrepreneur, so there would be no regular checks to count on as income. You’d have to wake up every single morning, go out and kill something and drag it home. If you don’t, your family won’t eat. An entrepreneur is the only person I know who can go from sheer terror to sheer exhilaration and back every single day. You’ve got to have a strong mind and heart to make things happen, and it will be a rough ride if you don’t have both. Plus, it won’t last long if you don’t absolutely love what you’re doing. Everybody wants to be successful in their job and make lots of money, but personal happiness is just as important. If you wake up jazzed about what you’re going to do every day, chances are you’ll be successful and happy. But if you wake up dreading the day and your job, then I can almost guarantee you won’t be successful financially or happy.

attorney at law Some historians may argue that among the greatest restoration stories of mankind are the European Renaissance or perhaps the post-World War II era. The cultural movement known as the European Renaissance roughly took place during the 14th through 17th centuries. This moment in history saw the face of Europe evolve with respect to its arts, architecture and long held science tenets. It also saw a rediscovery of the Greco-Roman classical knowledge and a rebirth of the study of Latin and vernacular languages. It served as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern Era. Closer to home, America saw its restoration take place in the years that followed World War II. During this era, couples who could not afford families during the Great Depression made up for lost time. The mood in America suddenly became optimistic. At that time, the unemployment rate of the Great Depression dropped dramatically and the economy improved substantially. The G.I. Bill empowered many honorable service members to finish high school and attend college. As their skills were improved, so was the financial well-being of their families. But, without a doubt the greatest restoration that can take place is when a person does as Romans 10:9 instructs us to do. Romans 10:9 says: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” The message is simple: invite Christ into your heart and make him your personal Lord and Savior. At that time, your restoration will be complete. Next He will do as Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” As you seek and strive to honor God with your life, He will reward you by allowing you to take on His characteristics. Hosea 14:4 says, “I will bring my people back to me. I will love them with all my heart; No longer am I angry with them.” I pray that you will invite Christ into your heart and allow Him to restore you! At my office, I also want to be part of your restoration plan, albeit in a different way. I pray that God will use me for His honor and glory in helping me address your needs. If you have been involved in an auto accident and/or other serious injury or if you have lost a loved one as a result of someone’s negligence, I will do my best to restore some sense of normality to your life. I will also help you in matters involving family law, criminal law and real estate and will issues. As always, I bear in mind that in honoring God with the way I handle my business relationships I will be honoring you my esteemed client.
