A chemical laboratory, Institute of Chemistry, Katowice

Chemistry During the Vinci Summer School chemistry workshops, students will learn, among others: to characterise aromatic compounds, explain phase changes occurring in nature and everyday life, learn the most important issues of materials thermodynamics as well as recognise the role of chemometrics and its methods in effective product quality testing. They will also learn the importance of photochemical and photophysical properties of vitamin B12 derivatives. Then they will carry out individual research projects under the supervision of tutors specialising in the research topic chosen by the student. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the specifics of research work and the latest scientific research conducted by research teams at the Institute of Chemistry. FIND OUT MORE

Students during the workshop in the Computer Graphics Lab; Institue of Computer Science, Sosnowiec

Computer Science School participants will explore issues related to the broadly understood artificial intelligence (including artificial intelligence with biometrics) and machine learning as well as data visualisation and creation of artistic patterns. Workshops in research teams will take the form of individual work under the supervision of a scientist specialising in the area chosen by the student. Such cooperation will be experimental in nature. It will allow for the implementation of scientific research with the use of specialised software and give the student the opportunity to propose and implement new algorithms and verify their accuracy on real data sets from different domains. A scientist in the Laboratory of Transmission Electron Microscopy, Institute of Materials Engineering, Chorzów

Materials Science and Engineering The participants will have the opportunity to dive into the world of materials. They will find out where and why and how materials work. The students will be provided with basic knowledge about materials (metals, polymers, liquid crystals), their structures, properties, and materials testing methods. They will also learn how the properties of materials can be tailored by selecting the phase and chemical composition or through heat and plastic treatment They will learn how to obtain modern porous materials for implantology and make such material with one of the research groups. Some students, during their workshops, will produce a high-entropy alloy using arc melting methods. Most importantly, the basic and advanced techniques of testing materials will be demonstrated, such as electron microscopy, X-ray, and spectroscopic methods. What is more, participants will be able to conduct research themselves using the high-tech equipment available at our University. FIND OUT MORE 13

Physics During introductory lectures and workshops, participants of the Vinci Summer School in Physics will learn the fundamental issues of the structure of matter, condensed matter physics, magnetism and nanophysics, analogue and digital electronics, and the application of physics in medicine, pharmacology, and environmental research. They will also become acquainted with good practices in teaching physics, i.e. how to perform physics demonstrations effectively. During workshops conducted in the form of individual experimental projects within the Institute of Physics research teams, the students will have the opportunity to learn about the specificity of research work and the latest scientific research conducted by the teams. The students will get to know the laboratories of the Institute, and under the supervision of a research tutor, they will learn how to use the theoretical knowledge acquired during the lectures in practice. The students will actively participate in research conducted by institute research teams. FIND OUT MORE 15
