blackadder–the golden age

A cunning plan is underway at Remarkable Theatre to bring to the stage the much loved story of Blackadder. Based on series two of the BBC television show, Blackadder- The Golden Age, the action sees Blackadder and his cronies navigate the trials and tribulations of the Elizabethan era. Veteran thespian Marty Newell (Jesus Christ Superstar, Cosi) plays Lord Edmond Blackadder and is joined on the stage by 16 other actors, some playing a variety of roles. Arrowtown locals Danny Duckinfield and Justin Abbiss (One Man, Two Guvnors, Mamma Mia) will capture the essence of Baldrick and Percy respectively. Of rehearsals so far Danny has said the hardest thing about playing Baldrick is that his demeanour and posture are completely at odds with Danny’s own style. Danny is loving the opportunity to be in a main production having recently been in Remarkable Theatre’s Pint-Sized Plays and Space Oddities. Justin jumped at the chance to be in Blackadder, remembering it fondly. ‘It was the only thing that could clear out the pubs. You had to be home on Sundays to watch Blackadder.’ He also believes a good laugh is exactly what everyone needs.

So what can we expect from this production? A great story, fantastic lines we can’t reveal but they involve a weasel and some wonderful performances. Audiences will be blown away by Lady Whiteadder (played by Ali Board) and Queenie (Nicky Busst). And of course Blackadder will be weaving all the characters together with his sarcastic wit and ego. It’s been 40 years since Blackadder first appeared but it is still as popular as ever. For a jolly good night out make a plan and get tickets today. Blackadder- The Golden Age. 7-16 September, Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. Brought to you by Remarkable Theatre and Arrowtown Lifestyle Village. Tickets from Eventfinda.

arrowtown choppers

The Arrowtown Choppers look forward to seeing you on Sunday 8th October for the Beech Party. Come down to the Chinese Village in Arrowtown from 9am with the aim to plant another 3000 native trees on the slopes above Bush Creek, adding to the existing 11,000 trees already planted by the community. The long-term goal of the Arrowtown Choppers is to see natural forest regeneration behind Arrowtown. This includes the introduction of key missing native forest species that were once present. This in turn will help increase the habitat for a range of native birds, lizards, and insects, enriching our biodiversity. The hills behind Arrowtown have some of the highest densities of falcon in the country due to our mosaic of shrubland, tussock grassland, and beech forest. Small bird species like miromiro/ tomtits, piwakawaka/fantails, and korimako/bellbirds help provide a food source for karearea/ falcon parents and chicks. In combination with Predator Free Arrowtown, we hope to eventually establish enough forest so that other birds like kea, kaka, and robin can eventually be reintroduced to the area.

The Arrowtown Choppers also work closely with the Arrowtown Scout Group and Arrowtown Primary School to plant trees on council land at Bush Creek. The Arrowtown Choppers will continue to work closely with these groups to expand on these plantings and promote the principles of Kaitiakitanga.

Future projects include the Arrowtown Community Nursery where has recently received ORC Ecofund and APBA funding, and an evolving concept of an Arrowtown Conservation Corridor. For further information please contact us on: info@ arrowtownchoppers.co.nz

douglas firs

QLDC are currently consulting with local groups including AVA, APBA and The Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group (APAG) on the removal of 7 Douglas Firs on the bank at the Berkshire Street entrance to Arrowtown. These trees risk seeding onto Feeley Hill and their cover increases the ice risk in winter. If they are removed, deciduous non-invasive exotics are being proposed in their place.

arrowtown local representing NZ

Josh Bonnar decided as early as 2020 (during COVID) that he wanted to ride in Europe and jumped at the chance when he was invited to join the 'KiwiDH' team, days before Christmas 2022. It's been a lot of training and travel to competitions up and down the length of Aotearoa since 2020, gradually building his race craft and experience, with many podium spots and top 10 placings in top-tier races for his age group at a national level. He is now well recognised in the NZ racing network alongside others coming through the ranks. Josh has had many nasty crashes and mental barriers to push through, and he has had to put in time as he trained alone in the last few weeks preparing for Europe. Joining the KiwiDH team has seen him race, this season, in Lenzerheide (Switzerland), Leogang (Austria) and Val Di Sole (Italy) all whilst waiting nervously for selection to represent his country based on those results. This week saw him rewarded, given a spot to race in his country's colours at the UCI World Cup by Cycling NZ in the successful junior downhill team (which has seen the girls finish with a 'kiwi lockout' taking all three podium spots). Josh himself qualified for the final in the highly competitive 'Junior Men' category, finishing 30th overall whilst helping the NZ junior male team rank as 5th overall in the teams medal.

Josh still has a race in Andorra and two in France to go... and if he can find a sponsor to get him to America and Canada there's opportunity there too, he's keen to hear from any interested benefactors! joshbonnar_
