roam the valley

Roam the Valley will be held on January 28, at the picturesque Cargo Cellar Door in Gibbston. A ticketed event for up to 3000 people, Roam the Valley promises to be a relaxed, fun festival showcasing dozens of wineries from around the region, alongside food stalls from well-known local eateries and live music playing throughout the day.

Kiwi country-pop music sensation Jackie Bristow and renowned jazz entertainers Nairobi Trio are among a stellar line-up of entertainment confirmed for this month’s inaugural Roam the Valley Wine & Food Festival.

Nashville-based Bristow, who is in New Zealand over the summer period, is an award-winning singer-songwriter who has shared stages with major international names, including Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Chris Isaak and Foreigner.

Nairobi Trio is regarded as New Zealand’s favourite jazz entertainers, having toured internationally and performing at major festivals in the UK, Europe, Australia and Asia.

Roam Central event manager Jo Brown says she’s thrilled to secure a strong line-up of musical talent for the inaugural event.

“Roam the Valley is shaping up to be a fantastic summer festival for locals and visitors alike, and we are thrilled to have some great live music from well-known artists as part of the attraction,” she says.

Tickets to Roam the Valley Wine & Food Festival are $49 (plus booking fee) and include a free wine glass, two complimentary wine tasting vouchers (for ages 18+), delicious food options, more than 35 local wineries, craft beer, cider and seltzer, plus live music and entertainment. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite

arrowtown village association news

a busy 2023 ahead

In December the AVA held a stall at Arrowtown Farmers Market on two occasions. It was great to chat to locals and visitors alike about our village and what’s important to them. We sold calendars on behalf of the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association (APBA) which sold out quickly, despite an extra print run, so make sure you get in quick next December for Christmas presents and your own kitchen calendar!

Preliminary results for our annual community survey are in which closed on Friday 20th January. The top 5 topics of interest from the 20 presented were; Extension of Arrowtown boundaries with 67% of respondents indicating this as a priority, Heritage preservation (48%), Buckingham St. changes and upgrades (46%), Infrastructure quality (44%) and Wilding pine control and reforestation (40%).

We will be sharing more detail on current activities and the AVA stance on these topics via our Facebook Page in the coming months and throughout the year. There will also be many other subjects of interest to keep our committee busy, including new proposals to introduce fluoride into Arrowtown’s water supply, revegetation strategy for the Arrow River as willows reach end of life, a Mahu Whenua gateway and new bridge proposal over Bush Creek, the continued development of Tewa Banks, Butlers Wall restoration and district wide issues which impact our village. There’s always an opportunity to get involved, have your voice heard and make an impact, so please get in touch to participate or let us know your views.

Stunning twilight opera for February 12

The thrilling Twilight Opera returns on Sunday February 12 –blessed by one of the world’s most dramatic concert settings. Six of the country’s finest opera stars sing a “popular selection” against the sweeping backdrop of The Remarkables seen from Shari and Grant Stalker’s Lower Shotover property.

“Our Twilight Opera is made special by the way the amazing voices and venue combine to make one and one equal about six,” says Paul Rea, chair of the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society (ACAS) which co-presents the event with Auckland Opera Studio. “New Zealand singers have become a big part of world opera. The Opera Studio’s clout helps us assemble younger performers who have already ‘made it,’ or are well on their way,” said Mr Rea. This year’s two sopranos are the Maltese born Carla Camilleri, and Amelia Berry who brought the house down at the 2021 Twilight Opera. Mezzo Tayla Alexander’s appearances with SOLE3MIO have sealed her reputation.

Oliver Sewell’s rich tenor has soloed at fabled venues like Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Centre. He’s joined by Shiddarth (Sid) Chand, one of the new talents snapped up by the Opera Studio. The lavish Samoan baritone voice of Samson Setu completes the “fab six”, supported by South Korean born pianist, Somi Kim.

Call this one “Unmissable.”
