Winterstellar 2022 An exhibition of astrophotography and videography 23 July–31 August It’s about space, the stars, and what we see from our place among them. Clear nights and low light pollution makes Central Otago the perfect place for astrophotographers and astronomy enthusiasts. The Southern Hemisphere is the best place to see into the heart of the Milky Way and we are close enough to the pole to see the Aurora Australis. Winterstellar 2022 is a collection of stunning images of space that are a compression of time and show much more than be seen with the naked eye. More stars, more colour. Thanks to Ray White Arrowtown, QLDC and Creative Communities New Zealand.

#22hardthings2022 Embracing #22hardthings2022 Lisa Guy’s call to action. Standing for councillor, many massive learning curves, overcoming threats to life, tackling sustainability, climate change, challenging regenerative tourism. So much to learn so little time. July 16th, Guy crosses a finish line in India to start her local government adventure. Team Hello Kiwi must complete their 6th Rickshaw Run – 19 international teams, from 13 countries – Leh Ladakh to Jaisalmer Rajasthan, surviving high altitude Himalaya, risk of militancy in Kashmir Jammu. Sadly for some even 40,000 Indian troops guarding the Amarnath Yatra’s 250,000 Hindu devotees were not enough to stop carnage. A cloudburst near Batal Zolji La pass took 16 lives this week, 40 people are still missing, just hours after Lisa and husband Edward went through the area. In Srinagar, a simple trip to the post office turned into interrogation with machine guns. Make it count folks Team Hello Kiwi are fund raising for Cool Earth. What hits home hard is witnessing first hand, the big melt and heat wave in the Himalaya, a verse in earths cry for us all to step up and do the mahi. Please donate – www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ hellokiwi – time, money, consideration each of us MUST do something. 3

arrowtown village association news volunteering - keep arrowtown a vibrant community

We’re sure most people would agree that Arrowtown has a strong community feel with a great network of clubs and volunteer run projects. From the rugby club to the autumn festival there are many opportunities to get involved and make some new friendships along the way. Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience and many annual cultural and sporting events need an extra pair of hands to make sure everything runs smoothly. The Arrowtown Scouts Group is on the hunt for new volunteers to help run their amazing programmes. There is something for everyone from fundraisers to leaders; plus, flexibility around how much of your time is required. It's great to see our local

tamariki immersed in "old school" style play like climbing trees, building dams, and night walks. Scouts also teaches important skills to enjoy the great outdoors which we're lucky enough to have on our doorstep. Leaders get to participate in many new experiences including overnight camps, enjoying a unique opportunity to become role models for our future generations. For more information, please contact Arrowtown Scouts via Facebook or email: arrowtown@group.scouts.nz -Daniel Sim AVA Committee.

burn dry, breathe easy

Reducing air pollution and improving the quality of the air we breathe is something that we can help with in Arrowtown. Try these tips – only burn dry seasoned wood, use firelighters, keep the air control open as the hotter it burns the less it smokes. If you are dissatisfied with your old outdated fire, consider upgrading to an ultra-low emission burner. Report persistent smoky chimneys to ORC Pollution Hotline 0800 800 033 or pollution@orc.govt.nz web arrowtownvillage.nz email chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz FB @arrowtownvillage 4

arrowtown lit up Preschool were delighted with the way Matariki went this year with it happening on the first national Matariki public holiday and also the first Matariki Arrowtown Lights inaugural event This made it more special and we are Photo credit – Think Loud Collective very grateful for the collaborative and supportive way the Arrowtown Business Promotion Board worked with us and for marketing and managing the event so well. Huge thanks to all of our amazing Preschool & School kaiako and whanau who once again went out of their way to support the Matariki event on the day! The Preschool and the Arrowtown School Kapa Haka group once again provided a popular and stunning performance in very chilly conditions - they are so committed, passionate and inspiring! It always makes me so proud to be part of this community when you see the number of locals who turn up to support events like this there was such a great vibe. Arrowtown Preschool also managed to raise approx $8000 to go towards our ongoing building and outside area upgrades, which is very exciting. arrowtown business news bush creek reserve & mahu whenua gateway

Over the last 2 ½ years members of the APBA have been working on improvements to the Bush Creek area adjacent to the CBD in Arrowtown. This has included the removal of logs & debris, the trial placement of rock steps (summer only), the restoration of the creek to a single channel, encouraging 4WD away from the river reserve and creek banks to prevent damage, the creation & tidy up of main ‘beach’ area adjacent to skatepark & more recently trial riparian planting. Some of this work has been done voluntarily using wheelbarrows, trailers & plants donated by the APBA, while the major works have been done by earthmoving contractors funded through ORC. This forms part of a wider vision to improve this area & subsequently work is underway (with support from the AVA, QLDC, Queenstown Trails Trust, QEII/Mahu Whenua, ORC) to create a masterplan for a gateway to the backcountry which includes the potential addition of a new bridge across the creek & small shelter housing information on tracks etc. This vision also ties in with the APBA’s CBD plan, Mahu Whenua Gateway plans (underway) and the longer term vision of native and non-invasive exotic planting in the area. As we work towards a concept plan to share for public consultation, we look forward to providing further updates in the near future.

let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local – AMANDA VIANA Arrowtown has been a part of Amanda’s life (and heart) since she was born- it is home! Growing up in Invercargill, she was lucky to spend nearly every childhood summer at the family crib with the Arrow River as her playground. Then, as a teenager, winter holidays were spent learning to ski up at the Remarkables. After gaining a degree in Japanese at Canterbury Uni and a couple of short stints in the Whakatipu working in tourism, she spent close to a decade travelling and working overseas (Japan, Greece, Egypt, the UK, Thailand and Mexico.) This is when she discovered her love of scuba diving and the ocean. Family bought her back and in 2002 she found herself teaching scuba diving in Lake Whakatipu, ice diving under Lake Alta and drift diving down the Kawarau! After a season as a hiking guide, she decided it was time for a change and became an English Language teacher teaching at a private language school in Queenstown. She stayed in this position for the next 15 years. A chance meeting in a sports store led her to marrying her husband Claudio and their two children Josh and Holly (and Rocco the dog) followed. In 2020, she was lucky enough to get a job in her dream workplace – the Lakes District Museum! Here she can combine her other passions of Education and History. As the Museum Educator, she teaches children of all ages from pre-school right up to year 13 students. She says, ‘If I can spark an interest in history and a love of museums, then I’ve done my job.’ Recently she has been awarded a 3.5-year contract to deliver the MoE funded Education Programme. This has has been a big win. When she’s not supporting her kids on the side lines or being their taxi driver, she is studying Te Reo Māori at levels 3 and 4. She also volunteers for Victim Support. nominate a local – email thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 11
