anzac service Due to Covid restrictions, this year’s Anzac service will not be held at the Atheneum Hall. The service will be held at the Memorial on Soldiers Hill, Durham Street Arrowtown – Monday 25th April 2022 at 10.30 am. There will be a speech from a student from Whakatipu High School Anzac Speech Competition, but the winner has yet to be decided. Patrick Edwards, a Year 8 student from Arrowtown Primary School will be sharing a reading. Arrowtowners may have noticed the removal of the old pine trees from Soldiers Hill. It Is hoped that with the help of volunteers this area will be replanted in the near future.

beech party The Arrowtown Choppers would like to thank all the volunteers who turned out for the third instalment of the ‘Arrowtown Beech Party’. With over 130 volunteers we managed to plant 2056 trees in three hours. This adds to the 4000 that have been planted last year, the band of Beech, Totora and Ribbonwood now stretches almost all the way up the first hill on the Sawpit Gully track (Bush Creek side). This program is committed to planting a further 10,500 trees over the next two years and with the great community support, it looks on target. We will continue to make this part of the Arrowtown event calendar, with two planting days each year in April and October. Also, a big thank you to the generous group sponsors who support this event, without these sponsors this couldn’t be the success it is. In addition to this work, the Arrowtown Choppers would like to thank the Arrowtown Scout Group and Arrowtown Primary School for planting an additional 1500 trees behind the Police Hut. The Arrowtown Choppers will continue to work closely with these groups to expand on these plantings and promote the principles of Kaitiakitanga. If you would like to be more involved or have any questions, then please message us on Facebook: @arrowtownchoppers or email us: arrowtownchoppers@gmail.com. 3

arrowtown village association news your community needs you!

Our recent AVA Community Feedback survey generated 98 responses, thank you to all who contributed. We asked you to rank issues of importance to Arrowtown and “representation at the QLDC table” ranked highest with 42% considering it the most important issue and 73% placing in their top 5. The Arrowtown Borough Council was established in 1874 and was eventually absorbed by the QLDC in 1989. Following the ward review process in 2021 after 32 years with a dedicated Councillor, the Arrowtown ward was disestablished. The new Arrowtown-Kawarau Ward will have three councillors representing the communities from Gibbston Valley to Arthurs Point and Arrowtown to Shotover Country. This is a great opportunity to be of significant influence across the wider district alongside the other larger Queenstown & Wanaka wards, each with four councillors. To ensure the interests of Arrowtown and Kawarau communities remain at the heart of QLDC decision making,

“Continued representation at the council table is imperative in order to retain the character and heritage long established in Arrowtown” – comment from AVA Survey

the AVA strongly advocates for candidates to step forward to be considered for election to this new ward in October 2022. The other top issues of importance highlighted in our survey, which our new councillors will be instrumental in supporting were: heritage preservation, infrastructure quality, urban development and changes to the use of Buckingham Street. If you are passionate about these matters, as well as many others and would like your voice heard, then you should consider running for election. The AVA can put you in touch with past councillors to learn more about what’s involved and the positive impact you can have on our community!

Nick Fifield – Deputy Chair, AVA

tewa banks community housing development In 2007, the Queenstown Lakes District Council recognised an issue in the lack of affordable housing and acted upon it by initiating the formation of the Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT). This trust is an independent, not for profit, community owned organisation. The Trust’s mission is to help committed residents of the Queenstown Lakes District into decent affordable housing with secure tenure. The Trust has obtained a resource consent for a 68 lot subdivision in Arrowtown. The site is between Jopp St and the Arrowtown Golf Course. QLCHT is currently working on implementing a number of amendments which will improve sustainability and energy efficiency outcomes for individual homes and the overall development. A space has been set aside in the reserve area for a tree nursery which will be owned and managed by the Arrowtown Choppers. There are nearly 800 households on QLCHT’s waiting list so there is plenty of demand. The civil works are currently expected to commence in the Spring of this year and building construction will begin in mid-2023. The QLCHT will be going to tender on both civil and build works in due course. Visit the QLCHT website for more details. admin@qlcht.org.nz The D’or team is excited to introduce LISA SHARP Lisa has been creating beautiful hair for more than 10 years. She has lived in the area for about 18 months, enjoys the outdoors, spending time with family but most of all her biggest passion is creating gorgeous hair and making others feel beautiful.

preschool extention now open After more than four years in the planning we have much needed new sleep areas to cater for younger children and we have also extended our learning areas. Last Friday we were excited to open our doors to our past and present families and the Board of Governance members. Fundraising through Covid is a true testament to the generous local community, however we do still need to fundraise another $50,000 to repay the Preschool contingency fund. Some community members have really stood out:

• Lisa Burroughs who has done an incredible job overseeing and liaising with Cook Brothers Contractors. • Jo Goddard, Scope Interior Design. Jo donated her time putting together the interior design- it looks great! • Tom and Tess Kelly, Welco Heating. Tom's donated contribution to our project has been immense. • The Thursday Club

let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local – THE POST OFFICE LADIES If you haven’t been into the Arrowtown Post Office then go in and say hello to Shalagh Madigan and Joan Sutton, you are sure to get a warm welcome. Both women are long-time locals, Shalagh has lived in Arrowtown for 22 years and Joan for 37. They both holidayed in Arrowtown as children. Shalagh recalls swimming in the Arrowtown pool which in those days didn’t have a fence between it and the bowling club. “My brothers would annoy the bowlers by wandering over the green in their togs. I love Arrowtown and the surroundings, especially if you are the outdoorsy type.” Joan’s fondest memories of Arrowtown are of the very first Autumn Festival, you may have seen her in the parade dressed to the nines sitting in a classic car driven by her husband Alan. No doubt she made her outfit, Joan once owned a wedding dress making business. “The village life is magical, picnics at the Arrow River and Macetown. But what I like best is working at the Post Office and keeping in touch with all of the locals.” As well as postal services the Post Office sells gifts and stationary. Also for sale are Shalagh’s seeds. “I enjoy my vegetable garden and learning about regenerative techniques and growing my collection of heritage NZ seeds. In spring I put together seeds, vegetable and flower plants as a Post Office fundraiser.” The Post Office is owned by the Lakes District Museum and is run as a community facility. nominate a local – email thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 15
