preschool project – building a mōkihi Arrowtown Preschool children have spent an exciting time building a Mokihi (traditional Maori woven raft). Teacher June Caples said, ‘It all started with an inquiry about the children’s ecological identity and the history of their community and environment. They learnt that Mokihi were used to navigate our waterways and this sparked an interest in creating their own.’ After much discussion and planning with the children, the Mokihi began to take shape. ‘The project was very much led by the childrens’ curiosity and questions,’ commented June. ‘They learn so much more when they are hands on.’ Traditionally Mokihi were built from raupo (bullrushes) lashed together with herekeke (flax). However Maori generally built them with whatever materials were available and so it was with the young waka builders; they used cabbage tree leaves, flax and jute string. Local artist, Jasmine Clarke offered expertise in weaving natural materials. From conception to completion, it took a year. The Preschool entered the Mohiki into the Autumn Festival Parade, winning their section, and then went on to win the Supreme Art Award at the Central Lakes Polyfest. February the 9th was launch day, but would it float? Photos taken on the day prove it did. The children were well equipped with life jackets and adults stood in the water keeping control of the raft. As the project had taken a year to complete, some of the original builders had turned five and gone to school. On the day of the launch they were brought to the river to cheer on the Preschool. ’You could see by the childrens’ faces… how excited they were,’ said June Caples. ‘This project has deepened the children's’ knowledge around iwi and tangata whenua history in the area.’ The Mokihi is now moored near the Chinese Village for the community to appreciate. 3

arrowtown village association news What’s the hurry Arrowtown?

Speed has become a hot topic in Arrowtown, and many locals feel serious action needs to be taken in a bid to change some driver behaviour. It’s a compact little town, full of narrow streets and laneways that make Arrowtown, well…Arrowtown. Many streets in the historic zone were built for horse and cart, not the constant stream of oversized SUVs we see today. Take the west end of Buckingham Street leading down to Dudley’s Cottage. There’s not enough room for 2 vehicles to pass, let alone 3 cyclists, a group of hikers heading for Sawpit, and

a couple walking their dog. Throw speed into the mix and we have a problem. Residents of McDonnell Road and Centennial Avenue have often voiced serious concern. With footpaths quaintly non-existent in many parts of town, streets are often rightly used as a shared space. A future Arrowtown might have less cars in the CBD, and pedestrianised streets where people can walk and ride without worrying about speeding vehicles. We all know life can be hectic and when we’re running late the 40km speed limit can feel like a hindrance, but we also know how hard it is to stop when speed is involved. Think about the kids walking and riding to school, elderly crossing the road, or visitors spellbound by the natural landscape so not paying attention to traffic. We’re so lucky. We live in one of the most beautiful and peaceful places on earth. It’s not like we’re having to flee a war-torn country, so really Arrowtown, what is the hurry?! Daniel Sim, Committee Member

read to a dog at the library on tuesdays 3.30–4.30! Reading to Dogs is a free programme featured at several of the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes libraries by Outreach Therapy Pets, supported by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and St John New Zealand. Our popular Reading to Dogs program provides emerging readers the opportunity to practice their skills with a gentle and non-judgemental therapy dog. Reading to a friendly canine has been shown to help young readers improve their oral literacy and reading comprehension skills. In addition to literacy benefits, reading to a dog also helps increase kids’ overall self-esteem and confidence. Less confident readers find that the dogs provide an atmosphere of safety and acceptance, reducing their anxiety about reading aloud. Practicing reading in this relaxed environment is fun and rewarding, with the added benefit of furry cuddles and doggy kisses. Although we wish the pups lived with us at the library, they are only here on Tuesday afternoons. The Reading to Dogs programme is made possible by our generous community volunteers. Both human and canine volunteers are vetted by St John to ensure safety and suitability.

new art gallery There’s an exciting new gallery in town. Seasonally offering exhibitions of leading-edge painting, we see modern mediums combined with traditional oil painting techniques. Specialising in realism as well as large scale abstract painting, local artist Eric Nauta creates these exhibitions intent on evoking a sense of enchantment and allure. Windows to worlds of wonder, worlds that we recognise both physical and emotional. The Gallery by Eric Nauta located at 21 Ramshaw Lane in Arrowtown is open 7 days a week with late evenings Wednesday to Saturday where you will likely find Eric working on the current exhibition work-in-progress. Opening exhibition on through till 04/04/22. Autumn 22 exhibition opens on 14/04/22. www.ericnauta.com The Stephenson Fund

let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local – TODD WEEKS Todd Weeks, his wife Michelle, and son Grant first discovered Arrowtown when they came for a ski holiday in 2014. Natives of New South Wales, they were happy to give up a tropical climate for one with four distinct seasons. Both Todd and Michelle have a hospitality background, so they easily found work here. Todd worked for Millbrook for two and a half years as Chief Concierge. In 2016 he took on the extra challenge of working as a real estate agent. For a year he did both jobs. He knew he was onto

something when he got a house listing on his first day at a local real estate agency. Within two weeks he had sold the house. “It’s all about contacts…” Todd is a real ‘people person.’ Todd now works for Bayleys Real Estate and you will often see him driving the company vehicle Billy, a comical little blue van. “It’s actually good to drive,” says Todd. Todd is also a valued member of the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade. He has been a member of the brigade for eight years. “You get a sense of reward facilitating a better outcome than when you first arrived at the scene. Sometimes it is emotional and confronting. When we get back to the station, we check in on each other, it’s a great team.” Todd is also well known for his outstanding landscape photography. His work can be found in local art galleries. nominate a local – email thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 11
