biggest festival ever Carole Watts, Festival Co-ordinator for the 36th Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival has reported that this year’s Festival was an amazing success. “We may have had to cancel 2020 but 2021 most certainly made up for it. We were completely blown away by the number of people that came to Arrowtown to enjoy the ASB Market Day and the festival parade on Saturday. All our events were so well supported with most selling out. It was said by many to be the biggest festival ever. The Roaring 20's Prohibition Party was such fun and especially for those who found the Speakeasy Bar. The Pie, Pint and Pinot had the largest number of attendees in recent years despite the few raindrops that fell. The Art Exhibition Opening had to turn people away, the Outdoor Movie became an indoor movie, but Shrek and Fiona were a huge hit and the Great Arrowtown Scarecrow Trail got families out and about exploring our beautiful town. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the businesses who donated a prize for our popular quiz night or other festival events, we were so very humbled by your generosity following a very tough 2020. Thank you also to our loyal sponsors who stood by us and our talented team of volunteers, both of whom we could not run the festival without”.

arrowtown village association news Take your car or jump on a Bus?

Daniel Sim, AVA Committee Member, ponders on our bus system. The sunrise has been extraordinary lately. The seasons are changing and at first light the sky is often ablaze with vibrant colours. It's these moments I'm happy I'm not driving to work. I catch the 7:00am bus from Arrowtown to Frankton every morning and get to sit back with my coffee and take it all in. It's a relaxing way to start the day. My journey takes just 15 minutes, I never have to find (or pay) for a park, the bus fare is a fraction of the cost of running my car, and I'm doing my bit to try and lessen congestion on our roads. You know what's strange though, I often have the entire bus to myself! As the Otago Regional Council looks at ways of improving services in the Wakatipu, AVA hopes more locals see the benefit of supporting our public transport network. Fares remain highly subsidized, with a single trip only $2 with a ‘Bee Card’, but without international visitors using the service bus patronage has dropped by 50% over the last 12 months. AVA seek an increase in services connecting Lake Hayes Estate, Shotover Country, and Arthurs Point directly to Green Waste Arrowtown; later services so visitors We’ve had continuing reports of can enjoy our restaurants and bars green waste being dumped in the without having to drive home river reserve. If you hear or see afterwards; and services to the ski anything suspicious, please use fields. As our district continues to QLDC’s app Snap, Send and Solve. grow, we need to embrace alternative options of travelling to work, school, the airport, or even a night out.

Beech Party

A big thank you to everyone who We need to overcome our obsession came along to the Beech Party on with jumping in our car every time we the 19th of April. 2,000 trees were walk out the front door. Let's support successfully planted by over 150 a public transport system that's people. It was great to see such inclusive, accessible, innovative, and enthusiasm. A similar spring event is contributes positively to our community, being planned, with more details to environment, and economy. come. web arrowtownvillage.nz email chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz FB @arrowtownvillage 4

Lee Nicholson was born and raised in Gore. After she was married in Invercargill, her career path led her to Auckland where she was involved in the travel industry. This was followed by a life changing 20 years building and managing her own international sportswear manufacturing and distribution company. Lee, and her husband Trevor, moved to Arrowtown in 2002 with her two children, Cameron and Alyssia, for a more relaxed lifestyle. It was here in 2013 that her life changed once again. Alyssia, after a nasty ski accident, received a stunning gift basket delivered to their home. The everlasting and uplifting impact of that gift basket has remained with Lee through to this day. It was also at this time that Lee met Tam Schurmann, the founder of the local volunteer-based charity Baskets of Blessings, and Lee has been involved with the Charity ever since. Lee believes that we have a very caring, nurturing community in the Wakatipu - most people love to help others and simply need to know how.

LO C AL.

Recipients of “Baskets of Blessings” are all nominated anonymously. They enjoy nourishing home-cooked meals upon receiving their frozen meal packs, lovingly cooked by volunteers, or they get a positive mental boost when receiving a luxurious gift basket during tough times. The volunteers, whether sorting, cooking, driving or packaging all know and enjoy the feeling that they are contributing to making a difference in someone’s life during a time of need. Lee’s charity work and a new career path, after completing post grad studies in 2019, keep her constantly busy and she loves being proactive and generating positive changes in every project she is involved with. Over and over, Lee kept saying the words “wonderful volunteers”, and that is what Baskets of Blessings is all about.
