sounds success Jeannie, from the Fork & Tap, has reported that with the incredibly positive feedback from the whole town, Arrow Sounds 2021 can definitely be classed as a success. The sun shone at all the right times and the sounds of music up and down the street gave a great festive feel. Arrowtown is full of incredibly talented musicians. From Primary & Wakatipu High School kids, through to our fulltime muse’s. We plan to do it all again next year on the 25,26 and 27 March 2022. A big thank you to all the venues & the APBA who made it happen. It is so great to see a community of businesses collaborating to make events like this happen. Also, a massive thanks to the team who worked behind the scenes–Tracy, Marion, Kev, Paul, Dave, Melissa, Alison

may 2021 concert series In 2019 world-acclaimed organist Kemp English and his partner, virtuoso violinist and Assistant Concert Master of the NZSO, Yuka Eguchi, stunned audiences with their superb performances. Now the Central Otago Regional Choir is delighted to announce that Kemp and Yuka are returning at the beginning of May to Arrowtown. Yuka will be leading the String Ensemble accompanying the choir. Also joining them will be the choir’s outstanding concert accompanist Sandra Crawshaw and Guest Artists, violinists Victoria Williamson and Skyla Murray. This Concert features the New Zealand Premiere of four of renowned British composer Will Todd's works, whose 2020 appearance at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Auckland, was cancelled due to Covid. Audiences loved the choir’s past performances of the music of Ola Gjeilo and like him, Will Todd combines voices and instruments to create mystical sounds of incredible beauty. The second half of the concert is devoted to the music of Joseph Haydn, including the “Little Organ Mass” with its famous virtuosic Benedictus for organ and soprano (Sally Davies). Also, the ever popular “The Heavens are Telling” from “The Creation”. As the performers take us on a journey through a range of emotions, from deep sadness to exuberant joy, join with them to celebrate the power of music at its best. Arrowtown Friday, 7 May 2021, 7:30 pm, Athenaeum Hall, tickets $25 (School children free). Tickets available for purchase at Lakes District Museum, with door sales on Friday from 7 pm, subject to availability. 3

arrowtown village association news arrowtown’s winter air pollution problem

We all know that Arrowtown has a persistent air pollution problem during the winter months. AVA has partnered with NIWA to both research and find some possible solutions. Known causes include:

• Wood burning, cooking and smoking inside houses • Calm winds preventing smoke from dispersing • Polluted air from outside entering and getting trapped inside homes How does this affect you?

• This is the air you breathe during winter months • Our children and vulnerable adults are most at risk for respiratory illnesses • The responsibility for action is not only for those with wood burners, we need everyone’s help What’s happening at the moment?

• NIWA scientists are trialling new ways to help our community assess air quality issues and find a solution • NIWA needs Arrowtowners to host indoor and outdoor monitors, and also to trial new initiatives

What can you do now?

• Attend the Community meeting 7 pm Monday 19 April at the Supper Room, Athenaeum Hall • Register your interest to host a monitor and/or be part of a committee to take action • Ensure your firewood is dry before burning • Report smoky chimneys to Otago Regional Council 0800 800 033 or email pollution@ orc.govt.nz Learn more and sign up as a community volunteer at: www. niwa.co.nz/arrowtown All welcome. It’s time to come together as a community to make warmer and healthier homes in Arrowtown

it's time to party A fabulous committee of Arrowtown Preschool mums have got together to organise a good old-fashioned PreWinter Party for their next fundraising event. It’s time to dust off your glad rags and get together for a good old fashion knees up. Time to party like its '1999' and dance the night away to one of Queenstown's favourite bands, MOJO. This party is to bring everyone in the wider Queenstown Community together and wash away those post Covid blues. Dress to impress! Amazing platters provided on the night and some of Queenstown's favourite wines and beers served at a cash bar. (Eftpos also available on the night) A complementary glass of bubbles on arrival, included in ticket price. Bring along some cash for some good old raffles and there will also be auctions on the night. (All proceeds will be donated to our amazing Arrowtown Preschool) Don't delay in getting your tickets as it is sure to be a cracker of a night and a sell out for sure. So gather your friends, purchase your tickets, organise the sitter and we will see you there. A Pre Winter Party – 8 May at the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall.

Wendy Clarke is originally from Invercargill and it was while holidayed in Arrowtown from an early age that she fell in love with the town. Wendy is now the second longest serving teacher at the Arrowtown Primary School where she started in 1996. For many years Wendy taught creative writing at the school, gaining several National Awards with her students. She herself is a published writer and poet, and her works have been included in the National Anthologies. Wendy has also written guidebooks for teaching poetry in schools that have been sold internationally. She wrote the extraordinarily successful children’s book, “Mango”, about the school cat. Funds raised from the sale of this book have gone to the School PTA. Wendy also works as one of the educators at The Lakes Museum, where most of Arrowtown will know, her husband David is the Museum Director. It is here that Wendy helps by hosting walking tours of the museum for visiting tour groups. Wendy is also very busy in the community, having been involved

in the Arrowtown Horticultural Society for 25 years, including several years as President. The Society organises the Annual Spring Flower Show and generates money for community planting initiatives. She has served on the Arrowtown Autumn Festival Committee, organised the RSA children’s speeches, helped organise the Post Office Market day and for many years served on the Arrowtown Pre-School Committee. Wendy is passionate about Arrowtown’s history and helping to preserve it. Her favourite T-shirt has the words JOMO on it. The meaning is…” Joy of Missing Out”. It is therefore no surprise that reading, writing, supporting the arts and gardening are her greatest pleasures.
