Olive Leaf building declined To all those who involved themselves in any way with the Olive Leaf Project, the decision to turn down the resource consent application has come as a tremendous relief or a great disappointment. The idea that we need to protect the historic nature of Arrowtown was used as an argument against the Olive Leaf Centre Trust and the 150 objections were enough to sway the Commissioners to oppose the application. And so, for now, The Olive Leaf Centre remains on the planning papers and in the archives of the Queenstown District Council. There may come a time, when in architect Fred van Brandenburg’s words, “the project will ultimately proceed”, but for now why don’t we all enjoy Arrowtown the waywe like it while we can.

gypsy jazz duo Fiona Pears is a violinist and composer from Christchurch. She received her first violin at the age of six years old and it was at that age she had her first public appearance, where she won first prize. By the time she was twelve years old she was performing with local orchestras. At fourteen Fiona joined the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. In her early twenties Fiona started to write her own music. From that point on Fiona has developed into an international artist and composer. Conner Hartley-Hall has been a professional music teacher for several years. He has performed in many settings and is considered a virtuoso on the guitar. Together, Fiona and Conner form the Gypsy Jazz Duo, and they will be performing live on the Buckingham Green on Sunday February the 7th, for free. Included in their show will be a mix of Gypsy Jazz, ballads and well-known classics. A rare chance to listen to two of New Zealand’s greatest talents. Their tour takes them all around the South Island and finishes on March the 11th in Oamaru. Their tour is organised by AOTNZ (Arts on Tour NZ). An amazing organisation that with the help of local South Island Trusts and in conjunction with arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups, bring the best of musical and theatrical talent to country districts. Their 2021 programme can be found at www.aotnz.co.nz 3

history gives way to fresh & new The Dishery only opened last November as a fresh new bistro in our dining scene, but it sits in a part of Arrowtown steeped in history. Since the 1860s, the Dudley’s Cottage Precinct has been a hive of social activity. Hungry and thirsty gold miners came down from the Arrow Gorge goldfields to the edge of Arrowtown to trade their gold finds for basic human comforts. Food, drink, shelter, warmth, companionship. Back in those days, the pan you worked the goldfields with was also the dish you ate from. The most valued of possessions. The modern day Dishery is owned and operated by Arrowtown locals Scott and Emily Stevens. It might just be the utopia those early adventurers were seeking. It certainly is eye catching sitting adjacent to the Arrow River Reserve in a beautifully crafted building that celebrates the stunning surrounding scenery and serving breakfast, lunch through to early evening dining.

show success This year’s Lake Hayes A&P Show was held at the Lake Hayes Showgrounds on Saturday the 9th of January. With good weather and free entry leading to a great day out for the record numbers that turned up. It is a massive thankyou to our sponsors and an even bigger thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success. Phillip Bunn, show President, said the show’s theme of “Celebrating Local Heroes”, was a way of acknowledging all the people who had contributed their time and money to support the community during and since the Covid-19 lockdown. Because of the free entry, the show will be making a loss this year after paying for all costs. Those that came and enjoyed the show are encouraged, only if they wish to, to go to www.lakehayesshow.com to make a small donation to help us through, this would be greatly appreciated. One of the many features of the show were the record numbers competing in the showjumping PET SITTING competition, included two of the Thinking of heading away for a break top local riders, Olivia Robertson now we’re in Level One.... and Grace Perry. market update The Arrowtown Farmers market has been trading since October 2017 and like every Farmers Market, there are challenges. It is the way you approach these challenges that determines your success. Our 2020 year ended a little earlier than expected for reasons that we all know. As we approached the start of season 2020/2021, a small group of stall holders got together and decided that even amongst the uncertainty of alert levels around the country, we would be able to have a regular Farmers Market. To date (except for one rain event) we have been set up on the Library Green in Arrowtown, every Sunday from 10am until 2pm. As a market we extremely fortunate having the food and coffee vendors that have come along each week. The regular offerings mean that the locals can come to the market, enjoy a coffee while they wander around picking up pastries for lunch, farm fresh free-range eggs for those yummy holiday breakfasts, a fantastic range of salamis for afternoon snacks and a casual catch up chat with friends. Contact us if you have a community project or a school fundraiser that you want to promote, as we can help with that. If you have any questions, you can contact us at info@arrowtownfarmersmarket.co.nz

let’s help let’s eat! update arrowtown choppers Happy new year. With 2021 upon us, the Arrowtown Choppers have a number of plans for this year. First, is that with the extensive wilding clearance work undertaken in 2020, the plan is to have a planting event rather than an annual chop up towards Eichardt’s Flat. The ‘Beech Party’ is planned for Sunday 18th of April and will be a family friendly event. The main focus area will be from the bottom of Bush Creek up the Sawpit Track towards Eichardt’s Flat along the trail. We’ve got approximately 1,500 trees to plant, mainly mountain beech. Everyone welcome, and we’ll have more information closer to the day. We are also progressing our nursery idea at Jopp Street, with it becoming incorporated into the affordable housing development at Jopp Street. Again, we will let you know when things start happening on the ground. The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust has four planting days planned through April, including one at Whitechapel on the 10th of April, and near the Chinese Village on the 17th. These are family friendly events with lots of plants to get in the ground before winter.

Are you thinking of selling? Call one of our experienced, local sales consultants, who will assist you through the selling process and give you the updated information on what’s happening now, in the Arrowtown property market 03 442 1616 Newman Real Estate Limited Licensed (REAA 2008)
