famous names at arts festival Participants in this year’s Arrowtown Arts Festival (15–18 September 2016) will have a rare chance to peek inside the minds of two of New Zealand’s leading creative artists. Grahame Sydney, one of our foremost painters, will explore the life of his close friend, poet Brian Turner. As both men’s best known work is rooted in Otago, Arrowtowners will enjoy the pair’s insights into our land and our lives. The Origin Consultants Inside the Minds speaker series continues the following day with cartoonist Garrick Tremain talking with writers Lisa Scott and Arrowtown’s own John Lapsley. Festival organiser Julie Hughes says the Arrowtown Arts Festival was designed to help people follow their passion. ‘We have an amazing arts culture in the Wakatipu and this festival brings together a wide variety of local and national artists that can help inspire others in a variety of ways.’ Workshops will cover a range of arts from painting, drawing, singing, sculpture, needlepoint, willow and flax weaving to furniture restoration, clothes remodelling, and even taking perfect photos on a smart phone. Naming sponsor Sign it Signs will also be in action with a special open event showcasing the creative design process involved in wrapping a car.’ ‘Taking up an art form is great for the mind, body and soul,’ says Julie. ‘It can help in so many ways and you are never too young or too old to be creative.’ Further details on p 7. rugby wrap-up Last Saturday Jack Reid Park hosted its first – and last – premier rugby match of the season as Arrowtown took on Cromwell in the semifinal of the Otago championship. Sadly the Bulls fell short, losing 11-14. Club president Simon Spark is disappointed the team lost a close game that was a good spectacle for the crowd of 200 to 300, the biggest turnout of the season. ‘The team would be the first to admit they didn’t play as well as they’d like.’ He says the Bulls had a consistent season. They achieved their usual goal of finishing in the top four, something they’ve managed to do for at least a decade. ‘We maintained standards but just couldn’t push on to the final.’ His personal picks for players of the season are Ben Carr in the forwards and Isireli Nayaloga in the backs. New coach Richie Anderson ‘put his heart and soul’ into the job, says Simon, but had to manage a large number of new faces. A bad run of injuries meant that 38 players represented the club over the season, and a number of former players had to dust off their boots to help out. POD John Morrison Next year will see more change for the club, with Richie moving on to new projects and, as is always the way at Arrowtown, a new crop of players. But on the upside, Simon is hopeful that they’ll be back at Jack Reid Park, with the construction of the new community building going out to tender shortly. 5

public notices Sadly the PTA has made the difficult decision NOT to run the annual Arrowtown School Quiz Series this year. We have no doubt it will be sadly missed amongst the regulars who support us every year. Instead we shall be focusing our energies on the Arrowtown School Fair which will take place in November where we’ll be inviting the whole community to join in on all the festivities. We are also looking at alternative venues for hosting a quiz series in the new year. Thank you to our wonderful Arrowtown/ Queenstown businesses who have always donated very generously to the quiz nights in the past. Fundraisers like these would not be possible without your donations. - Arrowtown School PTA

jack reid RIP Last Saturday Arrowtown lost a very distinguished community member when John David Reid, better known as Jack, died peacefully at the Lakes District Hospital after having a stroke. At the age of 95, he was the oldest born-and-bred Arrowtowner. Jack’s grandparents came from the Orkney Islands, arriving at the Arrow River with their two children in 1864. By 1866 the family had made enough from goldmining to move from their riverside camp to the stone house in Villiers St, Reidhaven, where Jack lived. Jack went to the primary school on Anglesea St but in the 1930s there was no high school in town so his secondary schooling was by correspondence. When he wasn’t studying he worked on the family farm. He went away to Dunedin for an engineering apprenticeship but that was interrupted by the Second World War. He served in the RAF, and after training in Canada flew as gunner in Britain. On his return to Arrowtown he worked in the Post Office & Exchange for nearly 19 years. When the exchange was automated, Jack bought Mrs Parsons’s shop and his wife, Margaret, worked there with him. Many in Arrowtown will remember buying sweets at Reid’s Cash Store, which is now the Night ’n Day. Jack was a Justice of the Peace and was the last mayor of Arrowtown – following in the footsteps of his father John and grandfather James. Jack Reid Park was named after him, and he was one of the few people in New Zealand who could claim to have met Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Nelson Mandela and John Major as well as other Commonwealth heads of state. There are many in Arrowtown who will miss him. 8
