lost and found In the early evening on Monday police were alerted about a woman lost in the bush in Arrowtown. The woman, believed to be an American tourist, called police to say she was lost and unable to find her way out of the bush on the Big Hill Trail. While a search and rescue operation was being organised, the woman’s friends walked in themselves, found her and walked her out. She was reported to be cold but otherwise unharmed.

design guidelines 2016 This week Queenstown Lakes District Council notified its intention to incorporate the Arrowtown Design Guidelines 2016 into the Proposed District Plan, to replace the current guidelines, which are now over 10 years old. The proposal would mean the new guidelines would be given more weight when resource consent applications are being considered for development in specific zones within Arrowtown. Any proposed developments in Arrowtown’s residential zones would need to reflect the town’s special character. Now’s your chance to tell the council whether you think the Arrowtown Design Guidelines 2016 should be incorporated into the District Plan, and whether the content of the Guidelines is appropriate to guide resource consent applications for future development. The Council will be holding a public meeting for anyone interested in getting more detail: 26 July, 7–9 pm, St John’s Church Community Hall, cnr Durham and Berkshire Streets, Arrowtown. Full details of the proposal and information on how to make a submission can be found at www.qldc. govt.nz. Submissions close on 17 August 2016.

councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goingson from Councillor Scott Stevens: Arrowtown’s air quality has been hitting new lows this winter despite the warm temperatures. Every log burner is contributing to the problem even the modern low-emission ones. However the biggest polluters are those burning coal or wet green wood in old burners that are allowed to smoke and smoulder all night. Otago Regional Council are charged with ensuring our air quality meets health standards and in my opinion they have been failing us. But we are also failing ourselves by thumbing our noses at the clean air regulations. Walk around the village at 5.30 pm on a cold still night and you can see smoke billowing from some chimneys. Those residents could do with joining the Arrowtown Scouts for a night and learn how to light a fire. The faster you get it blazing the warmer you will be and the cleaner the emissions. If the ORC don’t know about repeat offenders, there is nothing they can do. If a friendly neighbourly chat does not spark an improvement, then call the ORC air pollution hotline on 0800 800 033. In other council news, if you are 4

interested in getting first-hand information from QLDC staff and related experts on the proposal to update the Arrowtown Design Guidelines then come along to the St John’s Church Community Hall on Tuesday 26 July at 7 pm. The proposed update is open for public submissions and we would like to hear your views and answer any questions you may have. New additions to the rigger station –

new life for old objects Gibbston artist Isabel Garrido grew up in a farmhouse in Curico, Chile, surrounded by art, music, good food and wine, and all the freedom a child could hope for. It was here that her mother instilled in Isabel two passions that would define her life: gastronomy and art. When Isabel finished school, she set off to experience the world’s flavours and learn how to recreate the cuisines. After two decades travelling the globe as a professional chef, she settled in New Zealand and turned her attention to another calling: art. She turned a backyard shed in Gibbston into a studio and started creating. Isabel’s work transforms worn and used objects: she feels those discarded items have a history that can come alive again in her hands. For her upcoming solo show, she has gathered together more than 20 pieces that use found elements, including a number of major new mixed-media pieces. The works use materials such as wood, wire, foil, papier-mâché, metal springs, spotlights, cables, clay, acrylics, varnish and glaze. Isabel’s exhibition, which she describes as a sustainable art and light show, is at the Nugget Point hotel in Arthurs Point for two evenings only: Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 July from 4.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Don’t miss this limited opportunity to see an exciting artist’s work. 8

rippa rugby sensation At the recent Otago champs at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, Arrowtown Primary School continued their domination of Rippa Rugby, the non-contact version of rugby played by mixed teams of boys and girls. The school won the Year 5–6 competition for the sixth year in a row, and for the first time ever won the Year 7–8 competition. It was nearly a clean sweep of the three titles up for grabs, with the

Year 3–4 team finishing runners-up to Queenstown Primary. This success means the school will once again represent Otago at the national championships in Wellington next month. Coach Paul Winders is expecting tough competition, particularly from the North Island schools, but is hoping that the school can improve on its previous best results of fourth and second. 11
