now here’s a good idea! The Fork and Tap Ale House and Restaurant, Arrowtown teams up with Smiths Craft Beer house Queenstown to bring 10 days of IPA madness over the Queenstown Winter Festival! From Friday 24th June continuously through to Saturday 2nd July, beer swilling aficionados from far and wide will be flocking in to sample the best IPA that 21 craft breweries from around NZ can offer. A very excited Joe Public will not only be able to sample the goods but also vote for the best brew. Some of the brewers will be in town and plan to visit the two bars on a regular basis. The Fork & Tap have confirmed the Yeastie Boys on Saturday 25th June, Funk Estate on Wednesday 29th & Behemoth on Thursday 30th. If the brews live up to their names then it’s satisfaction all round! The Fork & Tap is also offering a beer tasting platter of four beers for $14 for those who just can’t cope with one beer at a time. There will also be special IPA Wild Vension Burgers, served with porcini jus, parmesan, pickled cherries & red currant aioli for a mere $22 - Yum! a touch of Italy Welcome Terra Mia, an exciting new Italian Restaurant with century old Italian recipes in the heart of Arrowtown. Husband and wife restauranteurs Alberto and Lucia Calabrese bring an authentic Italian dining experience to Central Otago. Hailing from Naples, Alberto comes from a family of esteemed restaurant owners and cultivated his love for cooking as a child. He grew up with his mum and nonna, who taught him countless family recipes and inspired his passion for tradition and Mediterranean lifestyle. “Our passion is to share our love and knowledge of Italian flavours with our guests, said Lucia. Fresh pasta prepared in house with special Italian flour and free range eggs; cured meats from Zamora; fresh Italian cheeses from II Casaro in Auckland; breads from the European Bakery and fresh meat from Neat Meats are just some of the mouth watering highlights. Homemade pastries and brioche; speciality organic teas from Pomperoy’s and a must try thick-and-rich Italian hot chocolate. The list goes on. While the venue is transitioning to a new concept, Terra Mia will continue to be home to a tasting room, operated by Gibbston Valley Winery. Terra Mia will also continue to offer the option for purchasing food to takeaway for visitors who might want to create a gourmet and authentic Italian dining experience at home. The restaurant will feature an Italian Salumeria corner stocked with products used in their antipasto, homemade pasta and sauces. Initially open for breakfast and lunch, there will also be an evening menu on Saturdays where advance booking is highly recommended. Alberto and Lucia are hoping to increase the evening options soon after the patrons have sampled the goods!

dudley’s cottage reopens Dudley’s Cottage, down on Butler Green, will be opening again after a short break on Monday 27 June. ‘If you haven’t been down to check us out then you are missing out,’ says manager Allie Blair-Hourston. ‘Not only do we have amazing coffee, we also offer fresh date and savoury scones, slices, baked potatoes, our famous steamed dumpling and much more.’

Dudley’s is a great spot for winter, with plenty of indoor seating and a roaring fire. In addition to the café, there is an extensive range of gifts, including babyware jewellery, homewares, skincare and art. ‘All our products are New Zealand made, and we stock products from some of New Zealand’s top designers,’ says Allie. ‘We also have our goldpanning operation here on site, so bring the kids down for a goldpanning lesson and relax in one of Arrowtown’s best hideaways. Our friendly local staff look forward to seeing you .’ 4

Tucked away by the historic Chinese settlement, Dudley’s Cottage is actually two cottages. The first was built in about 1880 by William Butler, an Irishman who was one of the first to arrive at the Arrow for the 1862 gold rush. It is one of the oldest stone cottages in Arrowtown and possibly in the Wakatipu. The site was strategic – it was the last building on Buckingham Street before miners headed up the Arrow River to Macetown, the perfect location for a supplies store.

fire brigade expands its role For over 80 years Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade has served the local community and during that time the role the brigade plays has changed and grown. The initial focus was, of course, on fighting fires but in recent decades the brigade has been attending fewer and fewer CFO Murray Forward receiving fires and more and more motor vehicle collisions. the keys to the water tanker from Mayor Vanessa van Uden In the last year the members have made the choice to broaden their commitment even further. This month the brigade stepped up to medical first responder status in support of St John. ‘Don’t be surprised if you call for an ambulance and a few minutes later there’s a crew of firefighters knocking at your door,’ says Chief Fire Officer Murray Forward. ‘We’ll look after you until the ambulance gets there.’ Brigade members, many of whom already have Pre-Hospital Emergency Care qualifications, have been working with St John to upgrade their skills even further and are well equipped with first aid bag, oxygen and defibrillators. With more training, they will also be able to administer some drugs, including painkillers, in the future. The brigade has also extended its responsibilities to include rural fire cover for the Wakatipu Basin and beyond. They have formed the Wakatipu Voluntary Rural Fire Force and an Otago Rural Fire Authority appliance and a water tanker paid for by QLDC have been added to the brigade’s fleet, bringing the total number of vehicles to four. And with eight members having undergone Level 2 Line Rescue training, Arrowtown will 0-3yrs & 3-6yrs Hours 8 am-5.30 pm be on call throughout the basin for (optional sessions available) rescues requiring abseil access. ‘All of these new responsibilities will require a huge time commitment from our volunteers, both for training and turnouts,’ says Murray. This extra work will be over and above the regular training nights and time put into smoke alarms (they have installed over 150 free long-life smoke alarms in the homes of elderly residents), school visits and other community events. generous donation When Ian and Irene Branthwaite sold their Arrowtown holiday home, they decided to share the benefits of the booming real estate market around a bit. ‘We made a bob or two out of the house,’ says Ian, ‘and we wanted to donate some of it to charity.’ And one of the beneficiaries was the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Invercargill retirees bought their historic cottage in 1971 and for more than 40 years used it once a month or so over the summer months. Irene says that they were fortunate enough to only cross paths with the fire brigade once - when a passerby heard the smoke alarm beeping in the empty house and dialled 111. ‘The fire brigade had to break in to investigate,’ she says. ‘They only did a little bit of damage to the front door and there was no fire!’ The Branthwaites’ generous donation has allowed the brigade to buy an expensive thermal imaging camera (TIC), which they’ll use to find hotspots in both rural and urban fires, and a marquee to take to community Irene and Ian Branthwaite with the TIC events such as fairs. 9
