arts festival bookings open After a successful inaugural year, the Arrowtown Arts Festival in association with Sign it Signs is gathering steam already for this year’s event on 15 to 18 September 2016, with a wide range of workshops opening for booking. ‘We have a new selection of workshops available for everyone to try out,’ says organiser Julie Hughes, ‘with amazing local and national tutors to help get you creative.’ Subjects covered include learn to paint in a day, classical drawing with life drawing, sculpture with wire or Paverpol, needlework, furniture restoration, flax or willow weaving classes, photography, upcycling of preloved garments plus a variety of kids’ classes. The workshops are geared towards beginners but tutors will also be ready and willing to pass on new techniques to intermediate students. ‘On the Saturday we’ll have a community concert with loads of entertainment plus a very special mask parade with Arrowtown School,’ says Julie. ‘And Sunday 18th will see the return of our popular artists’ market.’ Check out arrowevents.co.nz for all the workshop details and easy booking and payment options. Email julie@arrowevents.co.nz or phone Kerry Andrews on 021 537798 if you have any questions.

councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goingson from Councillor Scott Stevens: Winter in Arrowtown brings its own unique problems and top of the list is ice. QLDC contractors are out in the mornings monitoring the situation, spreading grit when and where needed. We get a few complaints each winter about overuse of grit in Arrowtown, but we make no apology for putting safety first. Grit can be clearly seen on the road and you can adjust your speed accordingly, but ice is invisible in many cases. We will do our best to avoid overuse and sweep it up when conditions have improved. QLDC offers an excellent morning road report and you can get it automatically by email or TXT. See www.qldc.govt.nz to sign up. Now let’s talk rubbish. At the moment there is a problem with overflowing public bins around the village. QLDC accepts the level of service needs to be increased, particularly over peak periods. However, locals are not helping by dumping household rubbish in these bins. Public bins like the ones on Buckingham Street and Adamson Drive are there for lolly wrappers and drink bottles, not your household food scraps, junk mail and empties from the 4

weekend party. Please do the right thing like 99 per cent of your neighbours and put it in a blue council bag or your household wheelie bin. On a more positive note, the ski season is about to begin and I hope the keen ones have a fantastic few months and make the most of the mountains that surround us!

rugby stars The Arrowtown Bulls were well represented at the recent Topp Cup festival of rugby at Cromwell. The team had eight players named for Central Otago’s premier or development teams. Despite a strong start, including a brilliant try-scoring 50 m gather and run by Arrowtown winger Steve Morris, the premiers lost 24-37 to South Otago. The development team were more successful, with Isireli Nayaloga’s two tries and Laurence Wadham’s 12 kicking points making valuable contributions to Central’s 32-21 victory over South Otago.

shaping arrowtown’s future The volunteer Shaping our Future Arrowtown Task Force is busy thinking about the future of Arrowtown and working on a long term strategic report following the community forum in August 2015. The task force are examining and expanding on the key issues, desired outcomes and potential solutions for a successful future town. Shaping our Future Inc is a process developed in 2011 to provide a framework for people to drive the future of their own community. It focuses on long term visioning, with recommendations and steps to take now and in the medium term to achieve the vision. So far the task force has met six times at the Lakes District Museum. Chairperson Amanda Woolridge is positive about the work done so far: ‘Our intention is to develop a strategic plan to present back to the community – ideally towards the end of the year – and so far we are making great progress.’ The group has crafted a 30- to 50-year draft vision statement and identified what they perceive to be Arrowtown’s key strengths, weaknesses, future opportunities and threats. They are working on key priorities identified at the forum, such as managing growth, elderly care, clean air and water, housing affordability and development boundaries. They are currently dividing into four sub-groups to delve into the practical detail. ‘The Shaping our Future executive 8

have provided us with a raft of resources, reports, processes and strategic models to use,’ says Amanda. ‘The Arrowtown Promotion & Business Association and the Charette Report have covered some of this ground, so we feel we can develop some robust strategic recommendations.’ The task force draft report will be presented back to the community for feedback and agreement. Shaping our Future will then present the final report to the appropriate agencies, individual or community groups for action.

your flop-free recipe mulled wine Winter is here now and you just can’t beat something warm in winter. We have run this recipe back in 2013 but it is so good at this time of year we thought you might like to use it again. 3 litres boxed red wine 3 cinnamon sticks 12 cloves 1 lemon, sliced thickly 1 orange, sliced thickly 9 cardamom pods – crush to release 3–4 grates of fresh nutmeg 550–600 g sugar – to taste 120 ml brandy – optional Heat all the ingredients gently, do not boil. If you want it stronger, make the day before and soak with fruit overnight. Strain, add a few chopped pieces of fresh lemon and orange back in for garnish.
