closure delayed The Athenaeum Hall will close for two months over winter for strengthening and an upgrade. QLDC had already scheduled earthquake strengthening and is taking the opportunity to carry out other upgrade work at the same time, to reduce the length of time the hall will be out of action. The extra work has led to additional preconstruction reports and consultation with heritage groups, which has delayed the start of the renovations, originally scheduled to be done in May. The work is now expected to begin in early July and be completed in late August. QLDC Chief Executive Mike Theelen said that the Council apologised for the inconvenience that the change in dates caused users, but said the outcome would be an improved facility for the community.

pop-up shop

After 10 years working in some of the country’s top art galleries, Leah Seifert decided she had become more interested in objects – more specifically objects from the past that tell stories. And she has found a unique way to share that interest. With a new business called Found, Leah has started hosting pop-up stores in historic buildings. The first was in the Old School House in Gibbston and she is currently at Granny Jones Cottage in Arrowtown, sub-letting the front room of Maarten Hofmans’ architectural practice. Pieces from Leah’s collection include Whites Aviation Photography, New Zealand and international pottery, vintage glass ware, Sovereignware, New Zealand colonial pieces and all sorts of quirky hand-crafted historical objects. The Arrowtown pop-up store is open Tuesday to Thursday 10 am to 3 pm until June 16 at 59 Buckingham Street. 3

the annie experience Arrowtown’s Hannah Coombe is still on a high after her involvement in Annie at the Queenstown Memorial Centre. The 15-yearold played the role of July, one of the orphans, in half of the performances. It was the first Showbiz Queenstown production for Hannah, but she’s not short of experience after appearing in the last three Wakatipu High School musicals. Hannah has this to say: It was such an amazing show to be a part of because of the talented, dedicated, hardworking cast and crew. It was heaps of fun because you get to meet heaps of remarkable people and all the hard

Hannah (top right) with the orphans

work pays off in the end. It honestly was super exciting to see the show come together from start to finish from the sometimes chaotic rehearsals to the spectacular creation we were all so proud of at the end. Thank you to anybody who watched the show, your energy, claps and laughter make the show what it is. Being an orphan on stage was an absolute joy!

Coordinator Pip Norton reflects on this year’s Autumn Festival: It’s a month since the Akarua Autumn Festival, we were so lucky with the weather, I look outside now and watch the hills disappear as the snow starts gently falling. Thinking back for me, it’s all a bit of a whirl, each day and event merging into the next. Besides the huge numbers of people enjoying themselves at the festival, what stands out for me is the help I received from local people and local business. We had an incredible group of volunteers, thank you, and received amazing support from local business. I just want to thank personally a few people who were just there when I needed help. Tony Lynch, Flash Gordon (Downers), Brian Rob, Louise and Alfred from Party Plus, Alan from Night ’n Day, Rosemary from D’Or and Graeme from Print Central, and not forgetting Jane from Provisions who supplied excellent bacon butties for a very cold group of chair committee men who were setting up early morning on Pie and Pint Day. Thank you.

film society opens up Queenstown Film Society is giving non-members an opportunity to find out what film society is all about at three public movie screenings. Usually screenings are for members only, but thanks to the support of the Goethe-Institut the society is able open its doors to anyone with an interest in quality German cinema three times this winter season. The first public screening is Stations of the Cross on 7 June. In this provocatively ambiguous 2014 drama, a 14-year-old girl from an ultra-conservative Catholic family resolves on a life of selfdenial. There will be further public

screenings on 26 July (The Cabinet of Dr Caligari) and 20 September (Solo Sunny). Stations of the Cross screens Tuesday 7 June, 8.30 pm, at Dorothy Browns Cinema. Nonmembers are invited to attend, with entry by donation, but get there early to be sure of a seat. More info at www.queenstownfilmsociety.co.nz.

bulls bounce back The Arrowtown Bulls have made it to the top of the Central Otago premier rugby championship table after a comprehensive 24-0 victory over Upper Clutha. The performance was a huge step up from the week before, when on a very wet field at the Events Centre the Matakanui Combined team showed why they are nicknamed the Mudfish and delivered Arrowtown’s first ‘home’ defeat of the season. The Bulls learned a few lessons from that disaster, and against Upper Clutha stuck to their game plan in drizzle, sun and wind from all over the park. They were particularly happy to keep Upper Clutha, an attacking side, scoreless considering the conditions. 9

your flop-free recipe apple sponge

4 eggs 1 cup self-raising flour 1 tsp vanilla essence 1½ cups milk oil for frying 2 tsp butter icing sugar maple syrup & roasted plums to serve Mix eggs, self-raising flour, vanilla essence and milk together in a bowl. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and pour mixture in so it covers bottom of pan and is about 5 mm thick. Cook pancake on one side until you see bubbles coming through to surface and then turn the pancake over. At this stage it doesn’t matter if it falls apart as you are going to start chomping it up into bite-size pieces anyway! Cook pancake on second side for a couple of minutes and then start breaking the cake up into pieces in the pan. Add butter and sprinkle with icing sugar whilst in the pan and fry off a little more until a wee bit crispy! Serve with maple syrup or traditionally in Austria with roasted plums...errr...yuuuuum!
