mcentyre family reunion Over a hundred family members descended on Arrowtown last weekend for a celebration of the 150th wedding anniversary of pioneering Arrowtown settlers Thomas McEntyre and Mary Curtin. Thomas and his brother Owen arrived in Arrowtown in 1863 to prospect for gold, before taking up Pleasant View farm at Lake Hayes. Beside the lake they started to build a homestead. On a trip to Australia to buy farm equipment in 1866, Thomas married Mary Curtin, whom he had met on the boat from Ireland. The newlyweds sailed immediately for Port Chalmers and travelled on horseback to Arrowtown. Mary was not best pleased to find her home only half built and a keg of whiskey in the kitchen. It turned out the housekeeper employed by the brothers had spent her time drinking with them in the kitchen instead of cleaning. Thomas and Mary had seven daughters and one son. Some of their descendants remain in Arrowtown, but many family members came from far afield – as far as the US – to join the reunion. Over three days the group gathered together to reconnect, learn about their family history, tour the garden created by Janet Blair at the old homestead and visit the grave of Tom and Mary at the Arrowtown cemetery.

toys for deserving kids Children unlucky enough to be in Southland Hospital will have their stay brightened just a bit by the generosity of Arrowtown’s Four Square store. Faced with a Christmas overstock of thousands of dollars’ worth of toys, Four Square co-owner Amanda Colmore-Williams set about finding a good home for them. She wanted the toys to bring a smile to the faces of children in need and after much thought and discussion decided to donate them to Ronald McDonald House in Invercargill. They will be distributed there and at the hospital’s children’s ward. ‘The only stipulation I had was that the children were given the toys to keep,’ says Amanda. ‘It’s tough enough getting treatment, I imagine, then to fall in love with a toy you are only allowed to borrow.’
